Silver and Sand kept getting better and better until suddenly every disparate storyline collide until I’ve yelped, wiped away tears, and composed an email to the author in search of book three’s release date.
The first installment carried the burden of building the world of Goetia, guiding us through it alongside Jody and Bobby, but I might argue that this sequel does even more world-building, fleshing out places and people until there’s a rich cast of characters and an expansive enough world that I can feel its geography. The politics of the magical world comes through clearly—I loved the meeting with the Sultara—and there’s a fuller, more textured romance here with characters somewhat grown.
With so much to juggle across palace hiring, villainous plotting, FBI probing, and world-building, there should have been too much to track and keep organized for me, but the author uses each chapter’s real estate to keep tabs on all parties in a way that made reading a chapter or two each day especially rewarding.
I’m not a fantasy buff, but I could feel that old Harry Potter final six chapters itch as the climax hit. I found more emotion in this second entry, which says everything, but the highest compliment I can pay is that I’ve set it down and feel hollow because I want to know what happens next but have to wait for the author to publish.
He strikes again! What an incredible read. Chris Steele sure knows how to write a character. This book had engaging plot, complex characters, and beautiful writing. I absolutely recommend the series!
