I'll keep reading this on Webtoon as the episodes come out.
I'll preface this by saying I've been following the IG account of Anna Miriam Brown and I've been watching bits of her art and work for a long time. The fact that I loved those reels and artwork posts made me so excited for the webtoon.
But something in the actual graphic novel just... lost me...
I think my biggest problem with the webtoon as I kept reading was the huge amount of text. Now, don't get me wrong, I read Dostoyevsky, I read Dickens, I love me some good paragraphs. But there's a certain balance to promise and pay off. When I read graphic novels, comics, webtoons and manga, my brain chemistry alters and I feel the need for a visual experience. So, when AMB gave me pages and pages of text instead of drawings, I just got so turned off. And, now, I understand there are times when exposition needs to be told, not shown. And I don't mind those, but there are so many instances when she could've drawn two panels to SHOW something she instead decided to TELL in 5 paragraphs of dialogue and action. This is what bothered me...
I never thought till now that one can break the SHOW, DON'T TELL rule in a graphic novel, but this is precisely the problem of Young Apostles.
It may be my personal pet peeve but the modern names here and there (Jae, Asher...) threw me off. I needed a bit to get used to those.
No worries there, I'll keep reading, but these are my thoughts so far into reading the webtoon (I think I'm up to date with what's out there).
I was a Beta reader for this book/comic, and it was absolutely PHENOMENAL. This is my first review ever so yes, I am doing this for Anna (Im a little scared). But this book is AMAZING and all of you should check it out, the characters are wonderful, the illustrations are amazing, the story is SPLENDID and Im just giggling while my friend is super into it and tries to get spoilers hehe :3
Once in a while, there’s a book so full of life, love, and truth that it changes the way you look at the world. As powerful as The Chosen, YOUNG APOSTLES isn’t just full of heart and truth but humor, blushing romance, and deep brokenness being healed by the light. I laughed, swooned, and cried as I met afresh the faith heroes I’ve known my whole life—and saw their perfectly imperfect lives transformed by the Savior’s love. BAH. LOVED IT. Bring me 14 (11) more.
The story of Young Apostles Volume 1 was touching and is clearly just the beginning of something great. Rarely have I been so eager to get my hands on a sequel.
The art was beautiful. I really enjoy this particular art style. While I was initially expecting a graphic novel (not sure why I thought that), this format ended up being much better, in my opinion, with the perfect text to image ratio.
The characters were the highlight. Oh my gosh/chef’s kiss/no words. My people who have read books with multiple POVs—we know there’s always THAT ONE CHARACTER whose perspective, at worst, annoys the heck out of you, or at best, makes you sigh and get through it so you can get back to your favorites. That was never the case in this entire book. Each new character intrigued me and I was dying to get to know them all. I still can’t decide who my favorite character or my favorite storyline was.
I myself am a lover of romance as a subplot so I enjoyed the multiple beginnings of love stories. Especially that certain someone being an absolute-disaster-in-love in Chapter 35. That was the most weirdly chaotic but wonderfully sweet flirting…I adore that particular character so much. Also, chapter 39?? Half-conscious Character A softly threatening revenge on Character B who’s actively saving Character A’s life after accidentally putting them in danger in the first place? I’m getting enemies-to-lovers with angst and I am HERE FOR IT.
I thought that the slavery aspects were well done. It was a prominent theme in this book, recurring in multiple storylines. Slavery looked very different between people in that tragic situation, and I appreciated how several of those unique difficulties were represented. From the complicated relationship between a slave and her mistress who are friends (albeit with an unfair power dynamic), to the unregulated physical abuse, to the separation of loved ones, to the fact that children could be sold by family members trying to save themselves from poverty—forcing the child to be their sacrificial lamb…ugh, it hurt.
For the non-Christians: Being a Christian myself, I guess I don’t entirely have the right to say that non-Christians can enjoy this too, but honestly…as character driven this is, I genuinely think that this book can not only be ENJOYED by people of all faiths…this is something y’all can get OBSESSED with. This is the kind of media that can assemble a fandom. It’s fun, y’all. It’s also angsty and heartfelt and painful in all the right ways. If you are into character-driven stories, this book is for you.
For the Christians: I love that while Jesus was not introduced until the very end, you felt the love of God in every loving action of the characters and the little bits of foreshadowing of what was to come. I also liked that one character struggled with…. well, honestly being kind of a jerk, while still consistently having his quiet time with God. He frequently went to God through prayer whenever he was stressed. Yes, this character was kind of mean but he was aware of this and working through it. And this was incredibly refreshing. In Christian fiction, the pious Christian character is usually the kind one who has it all together. In non-Christian fiction, the pious Christian character is usually corrupt with self-righteous judgement or some secret sin. I’m so tired of both. I think this reflects how some Christians idolize their leaders and pretend they are flawless, and also reflects how Church-hurt non-believers demonize an entire institution because of some wicked people within it. People are people, not angels or villains. There’s something amusing and satisfying here in this book with its self-aware fiery thunderstorm character openly admitting that his best friend is God because He’s the only one who likes him. Real faith is messy. Everyone has doubts and wrestles with things, and anyone who pretends otherwise is kidding themselves, because hey, we’re human.
Young Apostles was wonderfully human. A wonderfully human way of expounding on the lives of those who walked with Jesus. It makes them feel real and reminds you that they aren’t just names on a page, but people who lived and breathed and had hopes and dreams and fears and lives before being called. If you can’t already tell by this chaotic review, I utterly adored this book. It touched me in a way I can’t describe, and I 100% recommend to everyone.
I had the wonderful experience of being a beta reader for this book, and IT DOES NOT DISAPPOINT! I honestly stayed up until the late hours of the morning to finish it.
I cried, I giggled, I kicked my feet in joy. I truly felt so much while reading this and was genuinely upset when it finished. I loved every bit of it, every character more than the last. The ending is immaculate and truly leaves you wanting to read on. It leaves you on the edge of your seat, wanting more.
You can honestly tell how much love, care and thought was put into this to make it something truly beautiful and good.
I won't say anything about the story itself, but the way each character was written, felt so perfect. Anna gave her own insight to how each apostle would act, and honestly I felt like she created their personalities very well. Not only that, but the way in which she connected them to future and past Biblical events feels so cool. When you go reading it the references and understand the connections she was trying to make, you truly get blown away.
This was a work of art, and I am so glad to have been able to read it. :)
As an avid fan of Biblical fiction, I am loving Young Apostles! I really appreciate the obvious care and effort the author has put into keeping her story Biblically accurate while also adding her beautiful creative touch. Can’t wait for more of her work! 🫶
This book is so good! The story is beautiful and the art complements it so well! I am already attached to so many of the characters and cannot wait for the next book! If you are considering reading this, go for it! Jesus loves yall!
Words cannot describe the love I have for this. I’m obsessed. I highlighted so much in it. The story is amazing and well thought out. The characters are so loveable and the art work is phenomenal. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!! ❤️
╰┈➤ HOLY CANNOLI… I found these illustrations on Pinterest perhaps a couple of months ago, and in the comments everyone was talking about this cool series called Young Apostles. Naturally, I saved it to a board and forgot about it until I saw another post just a couple of days ago. Well I followed the link and fell hook line and sinker for a series that rejuvenated my soul.
This series is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Stunningly, it weaves creative liberties with historical accuracy to give us a picture of what the lives of the apostles might have looked like as teenagers.
I’ve never been so captivated by so few words (as this was the first ever webtoon I’ve read). But when I saw Anna has talent, it’s an understatement. She cleverly separates POVs so that you’re ALWAYS on the edge of your seat. And the characters are splendidly crafted. Their story ARCs are insanely captivating, and filled with enough charm and a pinch (or more) of realistic flaws and trauma. And as a plus, the friend group aspect reminds me of KOTLC, so this would be a great thing for fans of that!
I cannot wait for the second volume!!

If you’ve ever read the Bible, or don’t even know what it is… I recommend this book for you. As someone who grew up reading the Bible, I’ve found this book giving me a revived passion to search the scriptures earnestly and to see the real humans the stories tell us about.
Disclaimer: While the author’s heart is to show her love of the Bible, this is a work of fiction based upon real life. As such, there are elements of the book that won’t line up necessarily with your previous views of the apostles… and that’s ok. The purpose of this is not to be 100% accurate. So read this with the intention of more fiction than truth 🫶 If you want to know more true facts I recommend you start with the Bible 💕
Growing up, I always saw the apostles portrayed as old men. Then, later on, I watched The Chosen. I began seeing them from a different perspective. I realized we don’t know their exact age, but they were most likely not as old as many people portrayed them to be. I also began to wonder what the their daily lives would have been like and the joy and grief they experienced with their time with Jesus. This book opened my eyes to a whole other perspective. Not only does it make me more eager to go into God’s word but also to get my own perspective of their lives. Anna Miriam Brown has done and continues to do an amazing job capturing the apostles lives, and I can’t wait to read more.
Young apostles By Anna Miriam Brown Young apostles: 1
After reading Of ashes by Anna Miriam Brown, I knew I wanted to read her new series this year.
And my mom gifted the book for my birthday (thanks mom😃❤️) and she even gave me the color version!
So of course I had to read this immediately.
🎶His story (the musical) will come out with a new version + new songs (that match events in this book) in the summer!🎶
If you don't know, Anna Miriam Brown shared her journey of drawing the characters and writing the story (which I followed from the very beginning😊) So I was soooo excited to finally read it.
Even though it wasn't bad, it was just mostly getting to know some of the characters. Which it's important, but I wish there were more biblical miracles and stories happening.
Favorite characters: Andrew and Mary Magdalene❤️
And yes, there are a few easter eggs (which I loved)
Read this on webtoon and absolutely devoured it. The characters are so lovable and unique!! I’m so ready to see more of Jesus in book two though. The art is stunning. The story is captivating. Anna is just so talented!!!
TW: The book handles some heavy topics like abuse and slavery but very tastefully.
Hi everyone! This is my very first book review! I really do recommend this book to everyone! This was a really fun book to read! It was truly an amazing book and I loved it dearly from the start to finish!
The way the book began was really unexpected for me and the cliffhangers although they were heartbreaking to read but it made me want to continue to read non stop! This book really made me think and realize the little things in which I didn’t even know about the disciples which were said and mentioned in the bible!
As a visual person, I truly love the idea of having images throughout the pages to give a visual of what’s going on although it can clearly be read in the book.
This book had me on a roller coaster of feelings with all the cliffhangers, I was filled with joy and tears but every chapter made me just want to continue reading! It was truly so sad having to finish the book but I can’t explain how excited and how much I can’t wait to read the next volume!
