I have to admit, I grabbed my digital review copy through BookSirens mostly because of the insanely beautiful cover! It made me SO curious!

What I loved most about this story is its celebration of kindness. The heroine of this story is softhearted, caring, a healer. And although there are moments throughout the story where she gets into difficult situations, she always chooses kindness whenever it's possible. I therefore can't wait to see what will happen in the sequel. The ending left me a little sad, mostly because I started caring about the heroine so much, but I have faith that eventually, at some point, good will triumph over evil!

Thank you Willow A. McDowell for the opportunity to read this ARC!

I really enjoyed this book. The idea was interesting and the way the author explained the journey was fun. There was some banter along the way which made it enjoyable. I love a dual POV story because it allows readers to understand both sides and experience the push and pull from both main characters. I hope in the next book we continue to see the same banter and that the slow burn finally becomes more. One of my favorite quotes I highlighted was, “She walks as if the world is something to be healed. And I am to follow her as if it might save me.” The way Erindor notices Wyn had me constantly swooning. Willow does a great job at making Wyn feel like a character as soft as a rose petal and Erindor as strong as a current, steady and ever present.

I hope that in the second book we get more of an explanation about who Riven is and where the magic system comes from. It feels like both topics were lightly touched on and I would have enjoyed more.

At points there were some typo errors and sentences that didn’t make sense to me but easy to move past. I can’t wait to read the next book to be apart of Wyn and Erindor’s journey again!

*Please bear in mind all opinions are my own.*

Princess Wynessa is a kind and gentle soul that is forced to leave everything that she love to wed a strange prince. Erindor is assigned to protect her, is a silent full of shadows for his past. But danger seems to follow their away, a unlike bond form betteween them. Erindor will protect her not because of duty but because he will start to like her kindness and luminous aura. Wyness will realise that have strange powers that she is unable do control. Together with her companions will try to survie of the dangers of the forests and understant who she really is.

I really like the magic and world bulding. Magic that is connect with the elements of the nature. A world that not enjoy gentle and empathic people. That demade sacrifices. I hope that Wynessa can controle her power without change her kind soul. Also Erindor deserves hapiness. I want to see more of him with his princess.

The Quiet Flame is the start of an epic fantasy series that feels both classic and fresh. It follows Princess Wynessa, a young woman caught between duty to her kingdom and her own desire for freedom. From the very beginning, Wyn is forced into an arranged marriage meant to protect her people, and what follows is a journey across dangerous lands with her brother Alaric, her loyal friend Jasira, a charming knight named Gideon, and the brooding, silent guard Erindor.

The story blends court intrigue, sibling bonds, and political alliances with the dangers of traveling through haunted forests and forgotten shrines. Wynessa herself is a really relatable heroine—kind, a bit naive at first, but stronger than others give her credit for. Her quiet resilience and compassion make her easy to root for, especially when set against her cold, duty-obsessed mother. The supporting cast is also a highlight: Gideon’s humor, Alaric’s dramatics, and Jasira’s loyalty balance well with Erindor’s stoic presence (and yes, there’s definitely some slow-burn tension there).

The world-building is rich, with forests full of whispers, gods who may or may not still be listening, and kingdoms balanced on fragile treaties. Sometimes the prose gets a little heavy and descriptive, slowing down the action, but it also creates a vivid, atmospheric read that feels like stepping into a myth.

ARC provided by BookSirens | 3.75⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (rounded up to 4 for the world building and writing) | 1 🫑 (very slow burn, no spice)

This romantasy is exactly what its title suggests: a quiet flame — slow, atmospheric, poetic, built on tension, silence, and longing — and maybe too restrained for my taste.

I truly enjoyed Willow A. McDowell’s writing style: fluid, descriptive, and beautifully atmospheric. The double POVs of Wynessa and Erindor worked well, offering glimpses into both hearts — though Erindor remains far too guarded for my taste. His past, hinted to involve a darker role with the powerful Riven before joining the royal guard, adds depth but remains a mystery. I also kept wishing we could see more of his emotions rather than sense them between the lines.

The world-building is where this book shines: enchanted forests, mysterious Old Gods, whispers of light magic… all wrapped in a tone reminiscent of classic fairy tales. Yet beyond its lyrical prose, the story also delivers vivid moments of action and danger — tense fight scenes against mercenaries and fantastical creatures, perilous mountain paths, ravines, magical maze, dark enchanted woods…and the powerful Riven. This constant movement keeps the pacing alive and balances the more introspective moments of Wynessa’s journey.

I only wish a map had been included, as the journey between the kingdoms plays a central role in the story. As for the book cover, it is beautiful and this is what drew me to the book from the start.

Wynessa’s affinity for healing, gardens, and books makes her a gentle, relatable heroine — more scholar than courtier. Her journey toward self-discovery is touching, even if the romance takes a backseat.

And that’s where my frustration lies. I adore the Princess and her Knight trope (one of my absolute favorites 💗), but here the slow burn is so quiet it barely flickers. Despite their shared danger, sleepless nights, and “one horse” moments, their connection never truly ignites. There’s chemistry, but no release. The story ends on a cliffhanger / to be continued, which only heightens the sense of longing and unfinished emotion.

If you enjoy lyrical prose, fairy-tale atmospheres with intense moments of danger, and slow emotional awakenings, this story may enchant you. But if you’re seeking the intensity and payoff typical of romantasy, you may find this debut a bit too restrained.

My rating: 3.75 ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (rounded up to 4 for the world-building and writing quality)
- Emotional Impact: 3
- Character Connection: 3.5
- World-Building: 4.5
- Plot & Pacing: 4
- Writing Style: 4.5
- Romance: 3
- 🫑 very slow burn, no spice

If I could rate this a 4.5 I would.

It was an absolute pleasure to be an ARC reader for this debut. I have taken many notes of my favorite quotes, scenes, and details from this book so that I could reference and reflect on them in this review. There were SO MANY to go through and rule out for the sake of keeping this review spoiler free.

1. If you love books with beautiful descriptions that melt you into the world then this one is for you, I give this aspect of the book a 4.5/5. I took away half a point just because I noticed some repetition through out specific interactions; though this is always personal preference and does not reflect this authors lack of imagination AT ALL. I am a huge fan of Rachel Gillig’s writing style (another writer with unique descriptions); and this author reminds me strongly of her.

Side note: This book will make you feel sunlight on your finger tips and the scent of moss linger under your nose!

2. The former point is somewhat related to this one. This book is written in different P.O.V.s; something I look for among this writing style is the attention to detail in regard to each character. If I am reading from a different characters perspective I expect to actually feel that way.
I noticed this INSTANTLY. Reading in Princess Wynessa’s perspective made the pages feel like rose petals; as soon as I was in Erindor’s perspective the pages turned to lichen covered stone. I imagined their environments very differently even if they were sharing a setting, I love that! There’s two specific quotes referencing the description of a ribbon, each quote from a different perspective, each perspective different. Excellent job here, 5/5 from me in this aspect.

3. I would now like to mention the world building and the pacing of this story. The story moves quickly without feeling rushed, I enjoyed getting right into the plot of the book without having a bunch of information dumped on me through filler. You learn about the world around you as you read, you do not need to study the lore beforehand because Wynessa has done this for you!
My only criticism here (again, personal preference and not necessarily a complaint) is that it was hard for me to feel connected to some of the other characters at first, while they all had distinct personalities and humor that allowed them to not blend into the pages, I feel like I didn’t get to feel the bond between most of them until a few chapters in. I also feel like there wasn’t enough concern in the early chapters between the characters in relation to what they would’ve believed to be a cause for conflict among the realm.

This book was amazing, not just for a debut, but for a release in general. I am sure many agree with me that a typical “Mary Sue” character does not feel relatable or have any depth; this is not the case here. Having a gentle woman lead us into a story about growth and faults is such a refreshing take on fantasy. Having a male lead us with a calm storm rather than “affectionate” cruelty is just as refreshing for a fantasy romance.

I can’t wait for the next installation in this series!

"The Quiet Flame: The Oathfire Saga: Book 1" is an extraordinary start to what promises to be an essential new fantasy series. This book delivers a rare and wonderful blend of deep political intrigue, compelling world-building, and a romance that will completely steal your heart.

Princess Wynessa's journey is a powerful revelation of inner strength. The author portrays her growth as she navigates a fractured realm with nuance and compassion. Her story alone is gripping, but the tension is elevated by her silent, scarred protector, Erindor. The progression of their relationship is expertly executed; a truly smouldering slow burn that anchors the entire saga. Every glance, every forbidden moment, adds layers of emotional weight.

This book had me completely enthralled, keeping me turning pages late into the night, desperate for the next development in the plot and the next interaction between the protagonists.

If you love romantic fantasy that features a breathtaking journey, impeccable world-building, and an emotional payoff that makes your heart absolutely soar, you must read "The Quiet Flame." This book owns me. It is a stunning, five-star triumph!

I eagerly await the next instalment in The Oathfire Saga!

The Quiet Flame completely took me by surprise in the best way. From the first chapter, it’s clear how much heart and care the author poured into every page. This isn’t just another fantasy story it’s a layered, emotional journey that blends law, loyalty, and love into something that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

Princess Wynessa is a heroine I couldn’t help but root for. She’s gentle, intelligent, and compassionate, but underneath that softness is a quiet resilience that grows stronger with every challenge. Her friendship with Jasira was one of my favorite parts of the book their bond feels real and grounding, adding warmth and humor in the midst of danger. It’s rare to see female friendship portrayed with so much sincerity and balance, and it made their moments together truly shine.

The writing itself is stunning lush, atmospheric, and often poetic. You can almost feel the weight of ancient laws and old gods in every scene. Erindor’s loyalty and Wynessa’s inner light create a tension that hums through the story, and the slow-burn connection between them feels perfectly matched to the tone of the book patient, powerful, and full of unspoken emotion.

The legal and political elements woven throughout add a sense of realism and intelligence to the fantasy world, making it feel fully realized and complex without ever losing its sense of wonder.

By the end, I was both satisfied and desperate for more. The Quiet Flame is a beautifully crafted story about courage, choice, and the quiet strength that comes from staying true to who you are. I can’t wait to see where the journey leads next

The Quiet Flame follows Princess Wynessa, Wyn for short, as she journeys to marry a king to form a peace treaty between their two kingdoms. the plot was fast-paced and enticing, and only slowed towards the last ten per cent of the book, but was still kept you intrigued until the very last line.
The characters were the highlight of the book. Wynessa was a heroine I don't see often enough. a soft-hearted girl who in most fantasy books would turn out to be a badass warrior, but Wynessa kept true to herself, which might not be for everyone, but it was a breath of fresh air for me. I loved her character and her morals and the fact that she stuck by them even if people thought her decisions were dumb. Even when she second-guessed her own decisions, she stuck by them, and if anything, that made her character stronger than anything. The side-characters added much humour to the book. I can't wait to see more of Gideon, Jasira and Alaric and what the author holds for their future. the world-building was interesting. the author hasn't gone into much detail, given us enough for the plot of the first book, but I can see how the world-building will develop in the next books, and I'm excited to see it unfold. the romance was interesting, and I haven't built my opinion on it; however, I will say I do love the characters and their chemistry and am ready to see more development in their story. and finally the ending. I very much enjoyed the ending, again, it fit Wynessas character so well, and yet we see her growth in the final moments of the book as she decides upon her next steps. I'm excited to read the books that are coming.
Thank you to Willow McDowell for the Arc; all opinions are my own.

Thank you to BookSirens and Willow A. McDowell for the E-ARC! This E-ARC was sent to me in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book in a new epic fantasy series that I am very excited to see through!
The characters were both classic and new-especially the main character, Wynessa, who loves books and gardens, and is more of a gentle nature than most protagonists. She was underestimated throughout the whole book, but she was stronger than anyone gave her credit for especially when it didn't come to brute force solutions.
The poetic writing of the book is really what drew me in. I adore writing that is lyrical and beautiful, effortless. It brings a story together and makes it feel like I'm being transported into a fairy tale, especially for a fantasy novel.
The romance was definitely in the background. If you're looking for a book with romantic tension, spice, or lots of suggestive scenes, then this book is not for you. There is no spice and the story is more focused on the magic, the main character's story and progression, and the adventure the characters go on. The romance is there, but it's obvious that it's not going to be until later books that we get the two of them together.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to see where the next ones take us on this journey!

this was a strong fantasy adventure and worked well as a concept and from the storyline, it was a strong start to the Oathfire Saga series. I enjoyed the way the characters were written and how it was used in this plot. I thought it showed a strong concept and the characters had that feel that worked in this world, I thought it was a fantastic job in creating unique characters and had that overall feel to this and enjoyed the magical element. Willow A. McDowell has a strong writing style and am excited for more.

I couldn't put it down, just something about it!

I felt a kindred spirit in the FMC, she in a lot of ways reminded me of myself, someone else who despite alot of hardships fights to stay good in a cruel world (plus she loves nature/flowers/herbs as I do!).

The MMC her guard, ahhhhhh❤️❤️❤️

I loved the writing style. I loved the slow burn. I enjoyed the other characters as well and laughed out loud quite a few times at the funny banther between them.

I am now left at a cliffhanger and dying for the next book!

Thank you to the author and to BookSirens for the ARC.

This is an incredibly gentle read, and I think, at a point, that started working to its detriment. What conflict exists (the emergence of Riven, the impending wedding, the supposed threat of war) is muggy and not taken seriously by any of the characters.

If the narrative is leaning that it’s important to remain kind while the world is cruel, then the world needs to be cruel, even just slightly.

Wynessa is gentle and soft, a reluctant princess being sent to forge an alliance through her marriage and this comes as a complete shock to her. Added into this confusion, her brother (the heir-apparent) also accompanies her on this half-baked trek through the wilderness. He doesn’t even have the decency to sneak out later and join them as would’ve been expected for the actual heir to the throne.

I will give the story props for the romance. It’s slow build, slow burn, and, thankfully, Erindor knows about the implications of interfering in an arranged marriage between royalty. It is gearing up to be a wonderful pine from the sidelines and tempered by loyalty which is a dynamic I adore.

The journey itself felt more like, after the fourth mythological place of legend they encountered, closer to a monster of the week format, with a new fabled tower and bandit attack, with the side characters at risk only if they weren’t love interests for the supporting cast. I was desperate for a map to try and place where the characters were on this journey and also to try and place why they were so entirely isolated throughout. Bandits aside, no woodcutters, no scouting parties, no random academics wandering about.

The pacing needs some work with the journey taking up 85% of the book and the marriage prep/reveal squished at the end. The mythology is similarly muddled with Wyn being gifted by fire and maybe the forest, with another character being able to shape the earth, and her intended being wrapped in water. The ties to the gods or any religious structure felt haphazard in the inclusion and didn’t flow well as it kept verging closer to a refrain of recounting from a book Wyn wasn’t meant to have read.

This story had potential, I liked the overall concept but the day to day fell short for me.

A Lyrical, Lush Fantasy Full of Heart and Quiet Strength

Willow A. McDowell’s The Quiet Flame is a breathtaking blend of lyrical prose, immersive world-building, and character-driven storytelling. Her writing style is fluid, deeply descriptive, and beautifully atmospheric — the kind of language that wraps around you like mist in an enchanted forest.

Told through dual POVs, the story gives us glimpses into the hearts of Wynessa and Erindor. While Erindor remains guarded (perhaps too guarded at times), the hints of a darker past involving the powerful Riven add a compelling layer of mystery. I often found myself wishing we could see more of his emotions on the surface — rather than reading between the lines — but his complexity adds quiet intrigue.

Wynessa, on the other hand, shines with gentle resilience. A healer at heart, more scholar than courtier, her affinity for gardens, books, and light magic make her a quietly powerful protagonist. Her journey of self-discovery is tender and relatable — even as the romance stays quietly in the background.

Where the book truly excels is in its world-building:
🌿 Enchanted forests
🕯️ Whispers of the Old Gods
🧭 Perilous mountain paths
🌌 Magical mazes and dark, enchanted woods
⚔️ Tense battles with mercenaries and mystical creatures

It feels like a modern fairy tale crossed with a rich, high-fantasy adventure — dreamy yet grounded, poetic yet full of action. The pacing moves well, balancing introspective moments with vivid scenes of danger and discovery.

I only had two small wishes: a map (which would’ve been helpful given the central focus on travel between kingdoms), and just a little more vulnerability from Erindor to deepen the emotional connection.

Also — I have to mention the cover. Absolutely gorgeous. It’s what first caught my eye, and I’m happy to say the story more than lived up to it.

Final thoughts: The Quiet Flame is a gentle yet powerful romantasy that weaves love, magic, and self-discovery into a tapestry both nostalgic and new. Highly recommended for readers who love beautifully written, slow-burn fantasy with a strong sense of place and purpose.

If you are searching for a book to get you back into the world of reading, look no further. I haven’t really read for awhile as I just haven’t been interested or I haven’t found a book that would keep my attention. Willow’s writing pulls you in right away.

One thing I appreciated about this book is that it’s a slow burn and so is the romance. When I’m looking for a romance book I’m looking for something more realistic… The chemistry is perfect, the feelings are relateable and realistic to a real relationship of two people getting to know each other. And it’s not rushed!! I hate how some books nowadays just rush right into having sex, they don’t spend time building the relationship, the connections, and the feelings that come with it. This book spends the perfect amount of time building the relationships, connections, and emotions to really draw you in. I absolutely love that you get to read from Wynessas viewpoint as well as Erindors, as it truly helps to paint the full picture. It keeps the reader captivated. Folks the romance is done beautifully!

I also love that Wynessa isn’t a pick me girl nor is she insufferable. I’m so tired of it being the norm for the female main characters to be insufferable, weak, and annoying. I absolutely loved Wynessa and watching her journey throughout the book. She has character development, she’s strong, and resilient. I just love how her character, personality, growth, and emotions were written. A perfect strong female main character.

Another thing I appreciated is the world within this book. I was able to visualize everything that I was reading because it is beautifully descriptive. The characters boldly appear in my mind as well the scenery. I absolutely loved the world within for its own diversity and uniqueness. A unique fantasy world that supports and builds an incredible plot to the story.

I have many high praises for this book. It had me falling in love with reading all over again. I really couldn’t put this one down. I absolutely loved it and I can’t wait to continue the story. My only hope is that there are many more books to continue this deep rich story.

If you are looking for a well written romance with real chemistry, a slow burn that keeps you wanting more, fantastic dialogue, descriptive writing that makes the world come to life, and a diverse unique fantasy world look no further! The Quiet Flame checks all these boxes and more!

I received an eARC from the author and BookSirens, and I’m leaving this review completely voluntarily.

This story took me by surprise. It starts off slow, but once it hits that halfway point, it really takes off — and I couldn’t put it down. We follow Princess Wynessa, whose life changes when her parents, the King and Queen, arrange a marriage to another country’s prince in exchange for peace. What should have been a political move turns into a journey full of danger, emotion, and impossible choices.

Erindor, Wynessa’s loyal guard, quickly became one of my favorite characters. He’s torn between his duty and his heart, forced to face his past while trying to protect the woman he’s not supposed to love. The chemistry between him and Wynessa is a slow burn that builds beautifully — all stolen glances, lingering touches, and unspoken words that say more than either of them ever could.

The worldbuilding is rich and full of magic, gods, and mystery. I loved traveling alongside Wynessa and Erindor through this dangerous, beautiful world. I do have questions left unanswered — especially about Riven — and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them in the next book.

If you love epic fantasy, dual POV, sibling bonds, princess-and-her-knight dynamics, forbidden love, forced marriage, one-horse journeys, and old gods, this is one you’ll want to pick up.

I was chosen as an ARC reader for this book and I was so excited one because I love supporting new authors and two she is local so that was also very cool.

A Quiet Flame was a great start to a fantasy series. This is definitely a sloooow burn. If you are here for smut you won’t find it here.

The world building and character building was so good. I could literally see every character. The places, I felt like I was there. I love the way the author writes. The careful detail is what makes the story. I really like to be fully immersed when reading a book. It made me say, “ I want to go to there,” minus the danger of course.
It is definitely high fantasy. I felt like I was being led by a DM through a very elaborate DND campaign( in the best way). Though I did want a little more from the two main characters but maybe/ hopefully we will get that in the second book. I also wanted a little more from the side characters. I think that side characters sometimes can make a break a book and I didn’t feel a big connection to them… other than the Bran who is the goodest boy.
I will say it definitely picked up a lot at the end and will have me impatiently waiting for the second book!

Thank you to BookSirens for an advanced copy of this book.

3.5 stars.

I will say the FMC in this book was quite a change compared to what I have recently read. It felt refreshing.

Writing seemed a bit more elevated, with lots of descriptive language. You could really imagine places the characters were in. However I found some scenes lacking that same detail. We also don't know much about the magic, so maybe that's coming in the second book.

The romance is just like the title says - so if you like slow-burn - this book is for you!

This is a beautiful slow-burn romance that shines brightest through its sweet and gentle heroine, Wynessa. Her kindness and soft strength show just how far compassion can go in a world that can often feel harsh. I especially enjoyed the playful banter between the characters — it added warmth and charm to the story. There were a few moments where the plot felt a bit confusing and I found myself rereading sections to fully grasp what was happening, but overall it was still a lovely, heartfelt story that lingered with me after finishing.

This book was beautifully written and poetic at times. The author does a great job of showing how kindness can go far in a cruel world, which isn’t something we often see in fantasy romance. MMC is quiet but will stop at nothing to protect FMC. I loved the magic of the world and the forests they traveled through. The world-building was beautiful, and I found myself immersed within. My favorite part was the mimics.

Fans of classic romantasy will find plenty to enjoy here! It has all the hallmarks readers love: a timid heroine finding her strength, slow-burn tension, and magical powers growing in a dangerous, lore-rich world, adding a mythic quality that makes the journey full of vivid adventure!

A great start to a series!
Loved the characters and their evolution as they traveled through dangerous and magical lands. Hated a certain character and I'm looking forward to what comes next!
