Pinyin: Yun Bin Tian Shang
English title: Fragrant Tresses in the Clouds

I picked this up as I was in the mood for a historical romance, but boy was I surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The plot was engaging and the build up of the romance was done really well. I actually really liked both the FL and ML. My only complaint is the translation, which was really obviously done through AI (though what isn't these days?). The style of the translation constantly grated on my nerves but I put up with it because I really liked the story.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

The story follows our FL, Su Luoyun, who's the eldest daughter of an incense merchant who hit her head 2 years ago, and became blind as a result. The first part of the story is her dealing with typical household intrigue via her stepmother and stepsister, who puts on a false loving face in front of her father but backstabs her at every chance. Luckily she's super smart and manages to stay ahead of all their schemes despite being blind, plus she eventually manages to wrangle a house and incense shop under her own name out of her father.

Once Su Luoyun gets the chance, she hightails it out of the highly toxic household and tries to live a peaceful life in her own home. However, she doesn't realize that her neighbor is Han Linfeng i.e. the ML, who also happens to be a notorious playboy in the capital. He's the descendant of a former emperor who was sent to the capital by his family to serve as a sort of hostage, a guarantee for their good behavior in the distance state of Liangzhou. Linfeng is secretly a super smart and scheming kinda guy who also excels at martial arts, but he hides all of his sharpness and skills under the guise of a licentious and pleasure seeking nobleman to lower the emperor's wariness of him.

Their first encounter is when the FL is traveling back to the capital on one of her family's merchant ships, and the ML picks her ship to stow away on as he had just rescued a top rebel leader and is injured. Because she's blind, her other senses have become heightened and she's extraordinarily sensitive to smells, so she's able to tell someone else is in her room by the smell of blood. At this point, neither of them know the other's identity, but eventually they figure out after repeated coincidental encounters.

Anyways, I don't want to go too much into the details of the story, but needless to say there's a lot of scheming. First, as I mentioned earlier, the schemes are limited to within the FL's household, but later on as the geographical setting of the novel opens up, there's also military warfare and tactics thrown into the story as well as the inevitable fight for the throne. Initially the fight is only between two princes in line for the throne; the ML stays out of the fight as he's not a prince, but eventually he throws his towel into the ring once he has a properly trained army under his command.

I found the plot very engaging as it was very varied and never got boring. There was a little bit of everything thrown in and our main couple has a lot of opportunities to show off their smarts, so even the military tactics, which I personally don't like to read about, were interesting. I also appreciated that the author didn't stop the story when the ML becomes emperor but continues for a bit afterwards to describe their struggles with disagreeing ministers and a wily merchant who controls people from far away to to depose the ML. Sometimes the romance takes a backseat to the story as our couple is separated and they each deal with their own struggles, for example when the ML is off doing his official duties watching over and transporting grain to the military and the FL is at home dealing with her in-laws, but I didn't mind as I was very invested in the story.

Speaking of the romance, I thought it was done very well. The ML first takes an interest in the FL as she's a blind beauty, but he quickly realizes that there's more to her than meets the eye and he helps in small ways to deal with her family, like sending her incense to the general so she can gain a valuable customer for her shop or clarifying that he gifted her with some valuable incense ingredients to avoid suspicion of smuggling. On the FL's part, even though the ML has a reputation as a notorious and idle rake, she quickly discerns that he has a hidden side of him that's surprisingly thoughtful and discerning.

I love that their relationship is one of give and take. It's not just about the ML one-sidedly helping the FL; she is of great help to him as well. Even early on, she unknowingly gives him information about the 6th prince's wine gathering and he's able to avoid suspicion due to her hint. Later on she's able to help him in very impactful ways as well, such as using her merchant connections to help acquire grain and finding ways outside of official channels to transport it. As I mentioned before, they're both very smart people, and it's always a pleasure to read a story about smart people working together to outwit the folks around them.

On top of that, I was seriously impressed by the ML's meticulous attention to detail in his acting as a drunken wastrel that it took forever for his enemies to catch on. Even after his enemies sent men to infiltrate his manor and his grain camp, the spies still reported exactly what the rumors suggested, that he's a clueless fop without any brains and has no idea what he's doing.

This book was a surprise hit for me. Most historical romances are a 4 star read for me, but the outstanding plot plus the quick witted couple made this a standout read for me. Would highly recommend!

Yun Bin Tian Shang

(English Translated Title)

I was just in need of a historical fiction novel like this. The FL, Lu Suoyun and the ML, Han Linfeng, are well-suited and complement each other very well. Neither overshadowed the other. Conflict arose and got solved pretty quickly also. The political intrigue and the romance also had a good balance. Overall, if you're into Chinese historical novel then absolutely go for it!

9/7/25 granted I'd read a number of books by this author like in a row, so ... lowkey they're kinda formulaic but she writes SUCH DEVOTED HEROES that as a smitten hero lover, I gave a lot of it a pass. Also tbh both my grumpy mood + repetition, I just scrolled through the villain shit. Also especially in this book it felt like the villains were ... underdeveloped? I dunno, it was kinda just like a video game like "gotta knock 'em down." Take down one, another pops up. There weren't EXACTLY levels but ... kinda.
Also for his dad I felt like his only purpose was to be emperor and be a shield for ML when they come back to the capital. His nominal mother turned into what was supposed to be comic relief but she had ZERO GROWTH just a giant hairbrained pig teammate.
As noted I REALLY loved the growth of her half sister. TBH I wish there had been more scenes between her and her brother, uncle, and the matured half sister. Also with her SIL; she seemed like the smartest in the bunch. AND I WANTED MORE SCENES WITH THEIR KID(S).

Not mad I read it - really liked how clever FL was and how thoughtful and devoted ML was.
At least a C- to C ... maybe definitely a C?

Yun Bin Tian Shang/Adding Fragrance to the Hair

1 😒😡 well the Su family is disgusting & that stepmom Ding probably tried to kill FL, which blinded her. Wonder if her biological brother actually is dull. She’s 18, he’s 15…
Skimmed the fuckery

2 poor Su Luoyun. All her half siblings are no surprise pieces of shit too

3 … ok I’m getting pissed their ages keep changing. First it said Su Guiyan was 16. Then 15, so I changed it.
Oh damn. “What outsiders might not know was that although Su Caijian was said to be one year younger than Su Guiyan, she was actually born a year earlier, making her seventeen this year.” I hate her slimy cheating dad so much. And that whore Ding.
Anyway at least her brother is hiding his talents. Poor kid.

4 I had to take a moment to breathe. Ding is a poisonous viperous evil woman

5 who is the injured person on the ship? And I’m so pissed yet not surprised her family left her

Han Linfeng - is he ML? And oh he’s a hostage?

14 oh that knock on her head - will she start regaining her sight?

24 lol the bitch Ding’s past exposed. Skimmed it but damn lol that shit was ugly

36 I don’t understand though didn’t her dad say he severed all connection to her that time in court? Why bother? Just for her brother/he wasn’t separated? This is all so stupid

40 Huh he caught more feelings than I thought “He had already told her that if she gotinvolved with him, she wouldn’t be able to get away. He hadn’t said that casually...”

Their tacit understanding prior to the mountain act though!

41 heh. Girl. “If she didn’t have the self-awareness to know that a blind girl like her was unworthy of a young master, she would have truly suspected that this was all acalculated scheme and that he had goneto great lengths to secure this marriage!”

44 awww he replaced everything with cobblestones & carved stone so she could get around. And oof married!

45 Awww “She didn’t know that after she fell asleep, the man beside her turned over and opened his eyes. He propped his head up with one hand and lifted the bed curtain, letting the moonlight outside the window shine on the sleeping girl’s face.

This slender, cold plum blossom had finally been carefully transplanted into his courtyard. But he still needed to take good care of it so it wouldn’t wither...”
(Concerned about that servant they’re trying to stick her with though…)

46 I’m so sick of this Xi bitch

54 oof flood scare. FL was so amazing - as was ML

55 I realized I forgot to note when he really caught feelings - but now I think maybe he’s realizing she’s a little bit in too?

56 😹☠️💯 how they get the $ for grains for the refugees

(59?) SEX! 😹☠️ rice ☠️

60 her dad is unspeakable

62 uhhh is FL aware her shit half sister is pregnant & likely trying to become her husband’s concubine & pass the baby off as his?
F the empress. And thank god the eunuch stayed quiet

63 phew - caught LCJ

66 I seriously hate P6
lol the way he handled his “friends.” Also will young Zhao get a clue?

68 😡 mad his dad beat him as soon as he arrived. Hopefully the nominal mother is just whatever not a monster in law. Xi needs to die though

78 ugh guns

79 Cao Pei this shit for brains idiot who loves “” a traitor will definitely see ML then switch to him. And it’ll be gallons of dog blood I will scroll through

81 another thunk to the head - though yay she’s regaining her sight!
They better be able to handle that rebel guy

83 lol for a second there I felt bad for MIL, but then yeah - she did all that shit to herself

84 forgot to note a while back when the “translator” got lazy with editing their MTL 🫠🙃

87 ANOTHER head thunk. Though yay vision restored AND they got through the fireworks ambush

89 agreed this Qiu Zhen is too annoying.

91 lol ok well Cao Pei’er redeemed herself by cutting off QZ’s head. Poor traumatized Qingyang.
F the shit emperor & P6 JFC

101 so irritated Yuyang is being so shitty to FL. Bitch.

102 shit empress, shit princes, shit emperor. Too bad it’s everyone else who suffers

104 welp the stupid & evil empress & P6 destroyed the country & capital. 🤷🏻‍♀️ sorry to the dead whatever concubine & P9
I don’t feel bad for the stupid emperor either

107 I bet she’s pregnant
🙄 to running into P9’s widow & son
YAY HER LITTLE BROTHER.
Where is ML?

112 FIL enthroned - I feel like the elephant in the room has been ignored - will anyone try to say his legitimate brother should be the CP/next emperor?

(113?) oh good it’s announced

Scrolled 123 Huaixia obviously is a spy, that You guy is an annoying villain - HOW does he have so much money? Duh just confiscate it? Like this is all annoyingly stupid

I’m sure all this is more fake shit so 🙄😒

124 I need You Shanyue to really suffer

(126?) Honestly Caijian had a nice redemption

Def 126 oh! Lovely birthday - and that she gave birth so easily! But wait - does that mean she & her son share a birthday?!

127 awww their cute coronation

Su Luoyun and Han Linfeng are both superb individuals and more so as a couple — smart, cunning, and yet relatively good and kind-hearted to the people. They are pretty hilarious too. Well, except for the fact that Linfeng took everything that she said so seriously that he couldn't even take a joke — kind of a double-edge sword to be honest. And maybe because they really didn't say the words "I like you/I love you" to each other that they felt so insecure considering it started as a marriage of convenience. Imagine being the most handsome in the capital that women literally got obsessed with you but still felt that your visual wasn't enough to face your wife. I cannot with Linfeng. Hahahaha. I really cannot with them two.

Also, both Luoyun and Linfeng always fixed the mess their family did, and even I got tired for them at some point.

Another thing is that all the old furens (mothers of the younger generation) here were all muddle-headed and so immature except for Li Furen. I swear, Luoyun's and Linfeng's stepmothers were both so immature and crazy that I literally had nothing good to say to them, okay well, at least Linfeng's stepmom wasn't cruel to him. I kinda get why Linfeng's father didn't want to elevate her stepmother as the empress — she didn't have her own thinking to manage the Six Palaces and always just listened to her maids AT THAT AGE. Imagine???? She even got jealous of Luoyun, her daughter-in-law, because both Linfeng and his father listened to her. I was like????
