Beyond the walls of the last human kingdom, only the ruthless survive.
Acid rain has scoured the world for four hundred years, leaving humanity clinging to a single barren stronghold. Eurydice, a lowborn guard, devotes her life to protecting it… until she’s captured by the monsters outside the walls.
Dragged into the autumn court of Feyreign, Eurydice finds herself in a realm where strength is survival and softness is prey. Even love there is a blade—beautiful, but made to cut.
When she’s chosen for the court’s deadly trials, Eurydice must fight for a title she never wanted—or die trying. Her assigned partner is handsome, unreadable, and bound to the court by a vicious past. He’s meant to keep her alive, yet Eurydice can’t decide if he’s her protector… or her executioner.
As politics sharpen and the autumn queen hungers for blood, Eurydice must play a dangerous game—one where the prize is a kingdom, and the cost is everything she thought she knew.
A Curse of Storms and Scorn is the first novel in a character-driven romantasy series filled with deadly trials, courtly intrigue, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a fiercely competent heroine determined to survive on her own terms. Perfect for fans of The Serpent and the Wings of Night, Throne of Glass, and The Bridge Kingdom.
Ohh I could not stop reading this book! Thank you to the author for my ARC Copy.
Eurydice Waters is our FMC who is labeled as small and weak. She joins a male only guard that protects the city from monsters from way up above on the city wall. She has something to prove! As our story unfolds our FMC is brought to a new strange world and thrown into a trial to prove her worth.
Our MMC Dorion is a warrior and historian to his world. They are ruled by a ruthless queen who takes pleasure in bending people to her will.
This story takes you through many twists and turns as our FMC Eury battles for her life in a series of trials and the ending was perfect to set us up for book 2! Dorion and Eury dislike each other for most of the first half and but are a perfect team and are paired so well.
I don’t want to say too much because I do not want to give too much away, but I finished this whole book in less than a day! It’s that good!
The pacing is well done, the world building was beautifully descriptive. I loved the characters and thought the FMC and MMC were memorable and I want to see where they go next. This was an enemies to lovers book. The spice level is 🌶️.5- 🌶️ 🌶️
The villain is cruel. But she is masterfully vain and evil. You are left with a twist about Dorion that is left open for the second book to explain. I also loved how our FMC and MMC are in a matriarchal ruling society and our Eury breaks a glass ceiling of sorts and refuses to do things the way they’ve always been done.
I highly recommend this book! It was such an interesting story! It isn’t your typical fantasy or romantasy book and that sets it apart!
This book pulled me in right away and did a fantastic job of world building and making you feel like you were fully immersed in the Kingdom of Storms and Feyreign. The trials were fast paced and suspenseful. They weren’t so long and drawn out that I found myself getting bored. I was enthralled by every detail that Eury and Dorian experienced. I loved Eury as an FMC. Dorian remained a bit mysterious throughout the book and I hope we get more detail/backstory in book 2. The plot twists and turns were 🤯 right up until the very end and I need book 2 immediately! Aside from all that, this book was beautifully written and more people really need to be talking about it. I hope it gets the attention it deserves. Thank you to the author for this eARC.
If you’re in the mood for a fantasy that crackles with danger, betrayal, and a touch of slow-burn magic, A Curse of Storms and Scorn by S.W. Clarke is the storm you’ve been waiting for. From the first page, Clarke pulls you straight into a world teetering on the edge of ruin. Curses, power struggles, and haunting secrets drive this story forward, but what really keeps you hooked are the characters. They’re raw, messy, and beautifully flawed—trying to do the right thing in a world that makes “right” feel impossible. Clarke’s writing has a cinematic quality—lush descriptions that make the magic feel real, storms that seem to leap off the page, and quiet emotional moments that hit unexpectedly hard. There’s plenty of tension, too—romantic, political, and magical. Every chapter feels like the calm before another storm, and by the end, you’re left breathless. What I loved most was how the book balances epic fantasy elements with deep emotional storytelling. The magic system feels dangerous and costly; the relationships are complicated, and the stakes are both personal and world-changing. It’s the kind of book that makes you feel every heartbreak and triumph right alongside the characters. If you enjoy atmospheric fantasy with morally gray heroes, a bit of romantic tension, and writing that feels like thunder and poetry all at once, A Curse of Storms and Scorn deserves a spot on your shelf.
"Monsters were real. They always had been." This grabs your attention and you know it will be a good book! The author grabs your attention and creates a world in which you become immersed in. You are a side character watching a story play out in front of your eyes.
Eurydice Waters is a small, strong and determined woman, who guards the walls. The kingdom crops don't grow due to the acid rain. She has to prove her worth, as the male guards don't believe a woman can do the job. They are protecting the kingdom from monsters. Monsters that haven't been seen in generations.
After seeing her mother, she reminded Eury to "Never sit down." Eury takes this to heart, as destruction is cast upon the walls and her home. She runs towards the monsters, but they found her.
Dorian, the monster who saved her, takes her to his court, Sylvanwild in the Feyreign kingdom. Soon, she has been told that Dorian is her partner and they have to compete in three deadly trials and in order to live, they have to win all of them, together.
The days of the trials are unknown, the queen decides. The trials are different compared to other books and they are very exciting. You feel like you are in the pages of the book participating in the action.
"Power is not granted. It is taken." Eury has the essence of this, even though she doesn't see it, It was told to her when she spoke with a creature in the kingdom. Women need to see what they can do when they speak up in life and do what they need to do.
Eury has to fight her way through the trials literally and mentally. Secrets are revealed during the trials and I don't want to give them away, so you need to read this amazing book! You don't want to miss this immersive story that ends on a continuation to the next book that will be released April 28, 2026!
Thank you S.W. Clarke for ARC! It was absolutely amazing!

"You always have a choice. Certain things no one can take from you."
"What you have is everything, even if it's nothing."
"It's the synthesis of all your experiences that makes you unique."
"Be big when the moment calls."
"Don't over burden yourself."
"Trust me, as much as you can. For as long as we're in this, I won't fail you."
"I wonder if the best of us don't arise unless we've tried."
5✨ Omg wow absolutely loved it!! This was such an amazing book, the plot was sooo good had me hooked from the start. Need book 2 asap
Eury isn’t like other girl she’s was one the only female guard and because of that she’s treated how some men like to treat women like dirty!! Nearly assaulted which had my blood boiling but she’s tough she’s kicks ass, she’s wasn’t backing down and the details on what she’s did to her attacker was gross and laughable because well he damn well deserved it!! Her realm is under attack and now she’s been captured by Dorian.
I love Dorian!! He isn’t as he seems when we first meet him, he’s more gentle, sweet and caring with a few secrets 👀 He captured Eury and has taken her to his realm where not only are women equal here but one is even ruling. Dorian always puts Eury needs before his own and you can see how in awe he is with her from the littlest things she’s does. Omg the trails were so detailed I was on edge every single time 🙈 The plot twist was a whack to the face I had a feeling something was going to happen just wasn’t expecting it 😭 but it was brilliant loved everything about this book 😍
Thank you NetGalley & Victory Editing for the arc 🥰
“Never trust a man, especially outside these walls”
This book kept me up reading until 4am- because I could NOT put it down.
Our FMC, Eurydice, is a small and “weak” woman that has worked hard to earn her spot as a watchman in the wall. A defender against the monsters that live beyond trees. One night before her watch begins- her town is attacked by the monsters that live beyond the trees. As she’s looking for survivors in her town, she becomes prey to Dorian.
Dorian is our MMC, that decides to not kill his prey, but to kidnap her and thrust her into a fae realm where she doesn’t not fit in. She’s a mere human amongst ruthless fae led by an even more cunning queen with an agenda.
Eurydice finds herself bound to Dorian after she is chosen to be his partner in a deadly game to become the Queen’s champion. He’s meant to keep her alive and protect her through the trials, but is he doing it because he cares or because his life is tied to hers?
This book has an elemental magic system, but its application is interesting. I had a great time on the journey through these trials. SW Clarke does a fantastic job of painting a cinematic movie in your head, while making you fall for the characters.
This book comes out on October 28 and is available on Kindle Unlimited. This ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the author for an advance copy!
This is a book for you, if you love the following: 📚Insane Betrayal 📚Elemental Magic 📚Forced Proximity 📚Games and Trials 📚Slow burn romance 📚Enemies to lovers
Thank you for the ARC! - 4.5 Stars! Available on Kindle Unlimited on October 28, 2025
I have to admit, fantasy is usually the genre I skip right over, but something about A Curse of Storms and Scorn hooked me, and I honestly could not put it down. This book is a perfect example of what romantasy should be: a deeply immersive world blended with sizzling, frustrating, beautiful tension.
I was captivated the whole way through! The enemies to lovers dynamic? Pure perfection. It’s the definition of a slow burn—every glance, every barb, and every forced moment together builds incredible heat and frustration. It’s the kind of slow burn that keeps you turning pages long past midnight, just waiting for that one interaction. The world-building felt fresh and easy to absorb, which is a huge compliment coming from a non-fantasy reader. But the real core of this story is the FMC discovering herself through deadly trials. You'll be on the edge of your seat right along side her.
My only (and this is 100% a personal preference!) critique is that I could have done with a little more spice. The chemistry is there in spades, but I’m ready for the authors to crank that dial up in the next installment.
And speaking of the next installment… that last page. Seriously, I am salivating for the second book! The cliffhanger is brutal and brilliant, and I need answers yesterday. If you love character-driven stories and high-stakes romance, do yourself a favor and pick this one up, even if you’re new to the fantasy genre like me. You won't regret it!
This is one of those books I'll be buying in physical form as a trophy, it was that good!
This is a true fantasy romance: an epic fantasy with a romance subplot. You can definitely feel the romance will be more prominent in later books.
I think the warrior fmc element was my favorite part of the book. Unlike other fmcs who train or strive to be a warrior, our girl actually is a warrior, and she’s doing everything in her power to stay that way. The world keeps trying to get in her way, but she doesn’t give up.
I loved the trials in this book too. They’re decently unique and entirely entertaining. They’re not rushed but they also aren’t so drawn out that you’re ready for them to end. I really appreciated the way they were paced.
The world building was also done incredibly well. It doesn’t feel like info dumping, but rather given to us in a very organic way that helps us to understand the world better. It was very easy to follow which I appreciated.
Even though the romance wasn’t the forefront, I still thought it was executed quite well. I was invested in their relationship and seeing how it would play out in their reluctant allies dynamic.
Thank you very much to SW Clarke for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was completely hooked from the very first page. The author has done an incredible job of pulling the reader right into the world and painting such a vivid picture that I could see everything unfold as I read.
I adored Eurydice as a character. She’s that small but mighty FMC you can’t help but root for, fierce and clever from the very first chapter right through to the end. Watching her be such a powerhouse was easily one of my favourite parts of the book.
Dorian, on the other hand, was more of an elusive presence. We didn’t get much of his background, but that mystery only made him more compelling. I’m desperate to see more of him as the series continues 🤭
The pacing was spot on too. I loved that the trials didn’t drag and felt fresh despite the trope being so popular in fantasy at the moment. They were exciting, creative and completely immersive. Honestly, I could have read another three and still been thrilled to follow Dorian and Eury through every one!
✨ What to expect ✨ ⚔️ Deadly trials 🔥 A fiery FMC 👑 Political intrigue ❤️ Enemies to ‘lovers’??? 🤫
Any book that has a games and trials setting immediately has my attention. It's one of my favorite troupes. This story definitely delivered in this department. Initially, I felt like I was stumbling through some of the world building. I had some questions as to why Eurydice's kingdom was being attacked, what exactly the trials were for, etc, that seemed to take a while to get answered. However, once the trials began, the story became a lot more engaging, and our main characters seem to develop. Thank you for choosing me to be an ARC Reader.
S.W. Clarke stole my breath with this story. it's full of twists and turns; love and betrayl; enemies to lovers to ??!!! I cannot wait to continue Eury's story.

A Curse of Storms and Scorn is the first novel in a character-driven romantasy duet filled with deadly trials, courtly intrigue, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a fiercely competent heroine determined to survive on her own terms. Perfect for fans of The Serpent and the Wings of Night, Throne of Glass, and The Bridge Kingdom.
Our FMC Eurydice Waters has been labelled as small and weak her entire life. Having something to prove she joins the male only guard, one that protects her city from way above on the city wall. As the story continues to unfold Eurydice suddenly finds herself in this strange new world and then she's thrown into a trial to prove her worth even further.
Dorion our MMC has always been a warrior but more than that he's also been his worlds historian. His world is ruled by this ruthless queen who takes pleasure in bending the people in her kingdom to her will.
We journey through the story taking many twists and turns as Eurydice battles for her life over and over again in what seems to be a never ending series of trials that was the perfect set up for the 2nd book. Dorion and Eurydice from the moment they meet for most of the first half of the book really dislike each other but they are honestly the perfect team and they are really paired so well for the trials and everything else they have to go through.
I don't want to give to much away as I don't want to spoil this book for you. This is such a fantastic read, I finished it in 2 days. It's such a great read and I just loved it and I fell in love with the storyline, the plot, the subplots, and all the characters.
S.W. Clarke did such a fantastic job with maintaining the pacing, she knew when to amp up the tension, when to let down the tension, it was just perfectly done. And she did this stunning job with the world-building and she was just masterful in the beautiful in her descriptions. She did the perfect job in creating her characters, ensuring they were well rounded, fleshed out, and through the entire book they were given the room to develop, grow, and had the perfect arcs. Our FMC and MMCs are memorable and I can't wait for the next book to see where they go and what happens next. I can honestly say that this was a great enemies-to-lovers story.
I have to say that S.W. Clarke did the perfect job in creating her villain. This villain is masterfully cruel, evil, and vain. We have this one chefs kiss twist about Dorion that is just waiting for the next book to explain to us. I also loved the way that our FMC and MMC are living under this matriarchal rule and Eurydice, being a rule breaker, breaks a glass cealing and all sorts of rules in this kingdom by refusing to do things the way they have always been done in this kingdom and she chooses to do the way that she wants to do them.
I highly recommend A Curse of Storms and Scorn. This is a story that will live rent free in your head and you'll quickly realize that it's not your typical romantasy and that is what sets this book apart from all the others.
I do have to warn you, the last page of this book...the cliffhanger your going to find on it, it's brutal and its brilliant and it's going to leave you with questions that you are going to be needing answers to yesterday.
I will be putting this book on my trophy shelf ASAP. This is one of those books that was just that good and I can promise you that you're not going to regret picking this book up and reading it.
Quotes that I took away from the book.
"When you lose what you thought was yours, then you will begin to see who you truly are."

This book gets a good 4.5 stars from me. This is a long book so make sure you strap in for the ride. I did find that there was a couple spots that I felt could have been condensed and a couple repetitive areas but overall, I really enjoyed reading the book and would recommend if your looking for a few twists.
So about half way through I messaged a friend with a couple predictions. They were super vague. My predictions were: I think she's the cause of the rain, I think she will be the downfall to the queen, And fall for the "hated one", and her read dad is one of them........... So I can tell youth that some of these and my thinking were spot on and a couple were close but a little off target.
So this story is about Eury who lives in the Kingdom of Scorn. There is acid rain that is the only rain they generally get except for a couple times. She works hard to become a guard and be part of the watch on the wall. One night during a rotation, she see's a shadow in the tree line but no one believes her. This was never explained if it was a "shadow" or something more (there is information later on that you can guess what it was but not for sure). I think the answer will come from book 2 to be honest. Well one night when she was getting ready to start getting ready for her shit, a couple of the other guards attack her. She is a fighter for sure. While heading to have her broken nose taken care of, the wall gets under attack. She runs to her home and finds it gone. A knife to her back, she thinks of her mother's words and stands up to face the "demon". She is then knocked unconscious. This is where the story turns. She is then taken capture to the Fae world and eventually meets the Stag. She is thrown into 3 trials to become the Queen's champion. During these trials, her life is bound to Dorians (and his to her). So if she dies or he dies, the other dies. The first trial she trusts her instincts and does something that she shouldn't have done (don't want to spoil it, there is actually a couple things during this trial she shouldn't have been able to do or shouldn't have done........). During the 2nd trial, as she is about to meet her end, something else happens...... Between the 2nd and 3rd trial, we find out the truth about her mother (again, not saying much so I don't spoil it). THEN, OH THEN!!!! The 3rd trial...... I was not expecting what happened to happen (and I don't think the queen was either). The ending... Oh the ending....... I knew it but didn't say my prediction on a character....... But let's just say, I cannot wait for the next book to be out.
I will say this to help with some of the eggs to be found. Pay attention to some of the things that Dorian says because toward the ending, it will make a lot of sense.
If you need a book with trials, magic, has you question what is going to happen and an ending that will leave you wanting more, then check this book out. Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy.
A Curse of Storms and Scorn is a fantastic romance that quickly grabs your attention. The combination of world-building, character development, and romantic suspense makes me give this book five stars.
Eury is a guard in the kingdom of storms but gets captured by monsters outside the walls, carried away to a strange court. Her character is strong because she isn't an established princess from the start. She has to prove herself, to survive in circumstances.
Dorian is her assigned partner in the trials. He's described as "handsome, unreadable, and bound to the court by a vicious past." He doesn't just care for her, he's also her potential downfall, and that duality makes him fascinating. What is his past? What loyalties does he have? Is he her savior or is she his prisoner.
I realy liked the setting it is immediately dramatic: humanity has retreated to the last human stronghold after hundreds of years of scorching acid rain. Eury immediately faces high stakes: the “lowborn guard” Eurydice is tasked with protecting the battlements until she is captured. The shift from protection to captivity immediately establishes a powerful protagonist.
This book is an great choice for those who enjoy powerful female leads, romance with a touch of danger and moral ambiguity, fantasy with high stakes and intrigue, and a world that is both gritty and enchanting. Acid rain has scoured the world for four hundred years, leaving what’s left of humanity clinging to a single, dying stronghold. Eurydice Waters is a lowborn guard who’s spent her life defending it, until she’s captured by the monsters lurking beyond the walls.
Dragged into the Autumn Court of Feyreign, she’s thrown into a world where power is survival, softness is weakness, and even love cuts like a blade. When she’s forced into the court’s deadly trials, her only chance at survival lies with Dorian, a dangerously unreadable partner whose loyalty is as uncertain as his past. He’s meant to keep her alive, but Eurydice can’t decide if he’s her protector… or the reason she’ll die.
From the very first page, this book had me hooked. The world is brutal and atmospheric, painted in shades of ash, blood, and defiance. You can feel the danger pressing in from every corner, and I loved how Clarke didn’t hold back. This story moves fast, sharp, and fearless every chapter pulling you deeper into Eurydice’s fight for survival. (Though I’ll admit, I caught myself wishing for a few extra moments just to breathe in it all because I didn’t want to leave this world yet.)
Eurydice is everything I want in a heroine: strong, clever, angry, and so achingly human. She’s constantly underestimated, constantly fighting to be seen, and I adored watching her tear down every limit the world tried to put on her.
Then there’s Dorian. Broody, dangerous, loyal in ways he doesn’t want to be and the chemistry between them? Off the charts. The enemies-to-lovers tension goes full “I’ll kill you” to “I’ll kill for you,” and honestly, that’s my favorite kind of chaos. The banter, the slow-burn danger, the undercurrent of trust and betrayal—it’s addictive.
Thematically, A Curse of Storms and Scorn shines with rage, resilience, and reclaiming power. It’s a story about refusing to bow, even when the world demands it. There’s something raw and cathartic about watching Eurydice fight for her life and her freedom on her own terms.
The world-building gave me Fourth Wing, The Hunger Games, and The Bridge Kingdom vibes, with a little Labyrinth-style wonder and danger mixed in. Clarke knows how to write tension that lingers and women who refuse to break.
A Curse of Storms and Scorn is fierce, emotional, and utterly captivating—a dark romantasy that bites back.

Eurydice Waters is a petite, but strong and determined woman, who guards and protect the walls of the kingdom. The kingdoms crops don't grow due to the acid rain. She has to prove her worth, as a woman, show she can do the job. They are protecting the kingdom from monsters. Monsters that haven't been seen in generations. The days of the trials are unknown, and the queen decides. Filled with action! Love the women empowerment in this book. Women need to see what they can do when they speak up in life and do what they need To do. "Power is not granted. It is taken." This story takes you through twists and turns as Eury is batteling for for her life to stay alive, Eury and Dorion were the perfect pair they couldn’t stand each other for half the story but loved the outcome and the set up for the next book! I loved the world building and fast paced action! I couldn’t put this down! I don’t want to give too much away but I highly recommend this read!! I can’t wait for the next book!!
Eurydice, a lowborn guard from humanity’s last stronghold, is captured by the Fey and thrust into the ruthless autumn court. Forced into deadly trials alongside a mysterious partner, she must navigate shifting loyalties, politics, and the threat of betrayal. With a queen who craves blood and a kingdom hanging in the balance, Eurydice discovers that survival may cost her everything she believes in.
This book was such a refreshing surprise! The story and world-building felt genuinely unique, especially with the way the trials were handled. It wasn’t just a rehash of the same old fantasy competition trope. It really felt like the author brought something new to the table, and I found myself devouring every page.
Eurydice is honestly one of the better female main characters I’ve read in a while. She’s not weak, she’s not clueless, and I wasn’t sitting there rolling my eyes or yelling, “WTF are you doing?!” She actually felt capable and grounded, which made her growth throughout the story even more satisfying. She got handed the absolute worst circumstances, and yet she still managed to claw her way forward, proving her strength in the middle of brutal fey trials that were stacked against her from the start. She’ll never physically measure up to the fey, but that doesn’t make her powerless. Her resilience and determination are what make her strong, and I really respected that.
Now, Dorion… I had kind of a love-hate thing with him. On one hand, he’s intriguing, layered, and kept my interest. On the other hand, he clearly wasn’t telling us everything, and that constant holding back made me both curious and frustrated. Some of his interactions with Eurydice just fell flat. At times, he came across as a little boring, like he was missing that spark or push that could have made their dynamic so much more engaging. He has the potential, but it felt like he stayed too closed off for too long.
As for the romance, the slow burn was there, but it didn’t burn quite as much as I hoped it would. I was craving more banter, more tension, more little moments of chemistry to really make it spark. Dorion held back a lot, and while it makes sense once you understand his reasons later in the story, I still found myself wanting more fire between him and Eurydice.
Overall, this book felt like a fresh take on a fantasy trial story with characters who felt sharp, layered, and worth rooting for. I’ll definitely be picking up the next one.

Thank you to the publisher, SW Clarke and Netgalley for the arc. All opinions are my own.
Eurydice has always been small. Fragile. But that doesn’t stop her from becoming the only woman to join the wall guard. Protection against the monsters in humanity’s last stronghold. That is until the monsters come for her and everyone she’s loved, kidnapping her to the autumn court of Feyreign. Selected for the court’s deadly trials, Eurydice is forced to partner with Dorian, the Fae who kidnapped her. It’s win or die, if they manage not to kill each other first.
Monsters were real. They always had been.
Fantasy is such an amazing vehicle for social commentary, and I love how SW Clarke has incorporated that into A Curse of Storms and Scorn. Especially in her juxtaposition of the patriarchal human society versus the matriarchal world of the Fae. The writing is elevated, and the depth of the characters and world building give this more of a high fantasy feel. We get some common Romantasy tropes (eg Deadly Trials, the weak human girl kidnapped to world of Fae), but it feels different and refreshing here. The story leans into the expectations that come with those tropes, and then uses that to intentionally subvert them.
With Eurydice and Dorian we get true enemies to lovers. Their relationship has all the complexity you would expect from mortal enemies forced to put their lives into each other’s hands. There is tension, banter, mistrust but still longing. The Romance we get is excellent, but it doesn’t ever overshadow or impede the progression of our story and plot.
The story is well-paced; none of the trials feel overly rushed but neither to we unnecessarily linger. By the end the progressions of the characters and their relationships feel earned, and end of book revelations managed to surprise without feeling out of the blue. This was one of those books that’s a bit hard to let go of and move onto the next read, as it was really that immersive.
What to expect: 💠Enemies to lovers 💠Deadly Trials 💠Morally grey MMC 💠Sassy (and stabby) FMC 💠Political intrigue
*A Curse of Storms and Scorn* kicks off S.W. Clarke’s romantasy duet with a gripping story full of court intrigue and tension that really delivers on its promises.
The author immediately draws you in with a refreshingly unique premise: a world ravaged by four centuries of acid rain, leaving humanity clinging to a final stronghold. When lowborn guard Eurydice is captured and dragged into the autumn court of Feyreign, the world-building shifts seamlessly from grim survival to lush, deadly beauty. As a reader who doesn't always gravitate toward high fantasy, I found this world easy to absorb yet incredibly immersive, setting a perfect stage for the courtly drama to unfold.
The core of the novel lies in Eurydice's journey of self-discovery through the brutal and deadly trials she faces. The action sequences are well-executed, leaving you on the edge of your seat and genuinely invested in her survival.
But what really stands out is the romance. The slow burn here is intense, with tension that kept me reading late into the night. Eurydice’s partner is a memorable character, and their relationship blurs the line between protector and executioner. Their chemistry brings the enemies-to-lovers trope to life. If you like morally grey choices and passionate romance, you’ll be hooked right away.
The only reason I withheld that fifth star was a minor lack of clarity regarding some initial setup details. I occasionally found myself wondering about the larger historical context, specifically the purpose of the deadly trials and the precise political motivations behind the recent attacks on Eurydice's kingdom. While the emotional arc and central mystery were strong enough to carry the story, a bit more upfront explanation would have rounded out the world beautifully.
Ultimately, *A Curse of Storms and Scorn* is packed with action, unexpected twists, and an intense, satisfying slow-burn romance. It’s a powerful story about what happens when power collides with love, and hope dares to bloom in the shadow of ruin. Highly recommended!
(I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) from the author in exchange for an honest review.)
And that’s the exact moment I knew, this book wasn’t just going to entertain me but instead it was going to wreck me, resurrect me, and hand me back my crushed soul.
From the first page, S.W. Clarke said “sit down, sweetheart, you’re not ready,” and she was absolutely right because this isn’t just a fantasy; it’s an electric storm of vengeance, desire, and defiance. The kind that grabs your heart with one hand and your throat with the other. Clarke’s writing doesn’t whisper; it roars. Her prose is wickedly sharp, every sentence a spark, every chapter a strike of thunder.
Then there’s Eurydice.... my tiny tempest, my chaos queen. She is stubbornness wrapped in fire, rage in silk, and bravery carved from heartbreak. She isn’t perfect, and that’s her power. Watching her stand tall against men twice her size both physically and metaphorically, felt like watching an empire rise.
She bleeds. She burns. She survives. She is the storm.
Dorian. He is the kind of man that makes you want to throw the book across the room, pick it back up, and highlight every damn line he’s in. He’s infuriating and intoxicating all at once, not the savior, not the hero, but something real. Clarke tore down the idea of the perfect male lead and gave us someone raw, flawed, magnetic. The trope reversal? Chef’s kiss. The woman doesnt need saving—she saves him.
The world? Imagine thunder bottled in ink. Clarke’s descriptions are cinematic, alive, wild and you can taste the tension, smell the storms, and hear the scorn in every breath of wind. I was lost in her world; half reader, half worshipper.
S.W. Clarke didn’t just craft a fantasy but instead unleashed a manifesto. A roar for every woman who’s ever been silenced. A promise that our rage can rebuild kingdoms.
When I tell you I’ll be rereading this again and again.... I mean it. This book isn’t a one-time experience. When I closed the final page, I didn’t move. I couldn’t, because how do you go
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for letting me ARC read this book in exchange for my honest thoughts. I’m giving it 4.2 stars.
Eurydice starts out as a lowborn guard devoted to protecting her people, but everything changes the moment she’s captured and taken into the autumn court of Feyreign. She is thrown into danger she is right from the start. One minute she’s following the rules of her world, the next she’s questioning every choice because everything around her could kill her. She is forced into deadly trials alongside Dorian, who is handsome, inscrutable, and probably hiding a dozen secrets. I kept flipping pages wondering if he was going to save her or lead her straight into danger. There is this tension between them that isn’t just romantic, it is survival, politics, and trust all wrapped into one, and the book makes it feel messy in the best way.
The Fae hierarchy and court rules feel both rigid and alive, and the autumn court itself is almost a character, full of sharp edges and hidden agendas. There were moments where the acid rain outside the walls in Eurydice’s memory, which made her struggle in Feyreign feel that much more desperate. Times where she has to navigate the first trial. It is brutal and clever, and you can feel her fear and strategy in every move. The romance with Dorian is slow-burning and unpredictable, which I appreciated. Many times I have felt distrustful of Dorian. It made me question his motives and also made me hope he was actually on her side. That push and pull between them kept me invested because neither felt like a cardboard character, and their connection does not undercut Eurydice’s independence.
Overall, I throughly enjoyed this book. The pacing is strong, the court intrigue keeps you guessing, and Eurydice’s voice is sharp and compelling. I am eager for the next book because there is still so much I want to see unravel, both politically and personally for these characters. If you love courts full of danger, romance with tension, and a heroine who refuses to be a pawn, this one is for you.

From the opening pages, A Curse of Storms and Scorn pulls you straight into a world that is vivid, brutal and beautifully built. S.W. Clarke’s world is incredibly detailed, layered with lore, history and the kind of immersive descriptions that make you feel the grit and the magic of every scene. The story follows an FMC who is perceived as frail and weak, but she is anything but. Her journey is one of resilience and reclamation, fighting to prove herself in a world that constantly underestimate her. She is clever, determined, and learns to turn others cruelty into fuel for her strength. This is a character driven story at its core and the readers get to watch the FMC evolve. There is also a dark and mysterious MMC whose secrets run deep. So deep that by the end, we are left with more questions than answers. There is an enemies-to-lover sub plot that starts to take shape towards the later half of the book. The plot is heavy, layered with deadly trials, betrayal, and unexpected twists. Those trial scenes are stunningly written, fast paced and suspenseful. Clarke does an excellent job, weaving in bits of history, lore and myth that tie the past to the present, enriching the stakes of the story. If I had one wish it would be for more depth and backstory with some of the side characters. Big events happen early in the book that could have hit even harder emotionally if we had had more background or time with them. By the end, I was left with my mind spinning with questions, especially about the brooding MMC and the role that he plays. This is the first installment in an epic fantasy series, and it sets the stage for what is to come. If you love plot-heavy epic fantasy with deadly trials, twists, betrayal, and an enemies-to-lovers subplot, this book deserves a spot on your TBR. I’m already impatient for book two. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I am SO thankful that I was selected as an ARC reader for this story - it has quickly become one of my top favorite fantasies of the year.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I am somewhat stingy in my 5 star ratings but this story was SO close. The reason I docked a star contains a spoiler, so I’ll keep it to myself.
The FMC in this story is often portrayed as weak, fragile and small but she is anything but that - she is determined to survive. The banter between the FMC and the main male character is SO much fun, I constantly found myself giggling & kicking my feet. There is so much tension between these two & there is one good spicy scene (others are pretty minimal, I give it a single chili pepper.) I was hooked pretty early on in this book but the secrets that unraveled throughout the story and the multiple plot twists had me saying “just one more chapter” over and over. The villain in this story is ruthless in her pursuit of power but I did feel compassion for her at the end. This book contained good world building that didn’t feel overwhelming and the trials felt JUST RIGHT - they weren’t over too quickly but didn’t drag on too long either. The cliffhanger at the end is SO good & leaves me waiting patiently for book 2. This story brings forward powerful women and I am here for it.
POTENTIAL TRIGGERS -Attempted sexual assault -Graphic at times during battles & trials
FAVORITE QUOTES : “What are you?” His child lowered, his under-eyes becoming dark purple hollows in this light. “You know what I am. You’ve known since the start.”
“Never underestimate a woman in this kingdom.” He resumed walking. “No matter how they might look. They’re the most dangerous of us all.”
“Magic.” Fauns voice was low, hoarse. “The fucking human used magic.”
This book WRECKED me. The way I was pulled in to the story made me feel like I was right there along side Eurydice feeling every emotion, every challenge, hesitation, revelation…. She was just such an excellent character with the right level of naivety due to her circumstance but a thousand times more resilience and determination to come out of things alive. The hand she was dealt was so bad and the tenacity and strong will she had despite that was admirable. The level of heartbreak she experienced was enough to make anyone crawl in a hole and give up, but not her. Her counterpart Dorian was the perfect character to love so much and to hate so much at the same time. I am so so conflicted with him but in my heart of hearts I absolutely loved him and I am rooting for him. There is still so much he needs to say and I think the picture will be clearer when he does.
The games and trials in this book were so unique and so well written- not rushed, not drawn out. Also not predictable AT ALL. All the banter and training in between was excellent as well. The backstory and history was written so skillfully that it wasn’t overwhelming or tedious.
The burn in this book was excruciatingly slow- with enemies to reluctant allies to enemies to lovers to enemies again- and your heart gets shredded all along the way. I loved the supporting characters Faun and Haskel- they were just what Eurydice needed for very different reasons. There are some excellent prophecies told and the plot twist at the end was EXCELLENT. I absolutely cannot wait for book two. There is still so much story left to be told and I think Eurydice’s challenges will be even harder to work through. This is. MUST ADD to the TBR!!!
I requested this e-ARC simply because the cover was stunning (thank you Netgalley!)— and I could tell it involved the fae (and your girl loves her fae). I was right, but what I didn’t expect was how quickly I’d be pulled into Eurydice Waters’ story.
Eurydice is the only female within the guards that defend the wall of the Kingdom of Storms from the “monsters” beyond the city walls. She’s smaller than the rest, constantly underestimated, and faces the obstacles that come with being the lone woman among the guard. On her second night of watch, the wall is attacked for the first time in decades, and she’s thrown into the trials of Feyreign.
This take on the Unseelie conflict feels fresh and full of tension, introducing fae gods like the Stag and adding layers of mythology and divine power. As the only human in the fae trials, paired with a partner who despises her, Eurydice’s endurance and grit shine through. Despite heartbreak, loss, and betrayal, she continues to rise, proving that small doesn’t mean weak.
The pacing was strong, the trials intense, and the emotional stakes high. I found myself reading late into the night because I had to know what came next. I’m excited for book two, hoping for a little character redemption, because the betrayal was pretty wicked.
This story’s heart is in its resilience. Eurydice embodies the kind of strength that comes from pain and perseverance, and I can’t wait to see where her journey leads next.
YES. Just… yes. This book grabbed me from the first page and refused to let go. The world-building? Immaculate. Acid rain, a dying human kingdom, and a heroine who has spent her entire life surviving inside walls she never expected to leave. And then "boom" Feyreign. Queen courts. Monsters. Politics. Trials. I was obsessed.
Eurydice’s journey was honestly one of my favourite parts of the whole story. Her strength didn’t suddenly vanish the moment a love interest walked in (thank the book gods). She grows because she chooses to grow, every revelation, every hard truth, every moment of fear and grit is hers. Watching her figure out where she is, who she is, and what she’s capable of was perfection.
And the trials!! Not just a quick “and then she survived, yay.” No. I got the full nail-biting, chaotic, heart-in-my-throat experience. The detail, the intensity, the way each challenge pressed on something different. LOVED!
Hastel? Amazing. That’s it. That’s the note.
Dorian? My complicated, tragic, loyal, messy man. Eurydice can’t see it yet, but the growth is there. He’s shedding blind hatred and loyalty, wrestling his history, learning how to be better and I’m desperately hoping book two lets her peel those layers back. I need her to see the honesty he was trying so hard to give.
Atmospheric, brutal, romantic in the sharpest way, and filled with characters I can’t stop thinking about. I’m already counting the days to book two.
An if I may beg, a chapter or two of Dorians POV. I just want to know what this man was thinking from the first day to the last day of the chapter.
A Curse of Storms and Scorn by S.W. Clarke swept me away into a world of danger, desire, and cursed destinies — and I loved every storm-tossed, scorn-soaked minute of it.
From the very first page, Clarke’s writing pulls you into a richly imagined world where magic simmers beneath every word and nothing is as simple as it seems. The tone is darkly romantic, with just enough sharp edges to keep you on your toes — and enough tenderness to make your heart ache in all the right ways.
The characters are layered and emotionally complex. I especially loved how the story didn’t shy away from difficult choices, painful truths, and inner battles. The romantic tension crackles like lightning in a summer storm — unpredictable, intense, and impossible to ignore. If you're a fan of brooding leads, secrets between allies, and the slow burn of trust being built from ashes, this book is absolutely for you.
While there were a few moments where the pacing could have tightened just a bit, it didn’t take away from the overall impact of the story. By the end, I was fully invested — heart pounding, emotions tangled, and already craving the next installment.
This is a story about what happens when power collides with love, when curses run deeper than blood, and when hope dares to bloom in the shadow of ruin.
If you enjoy high-stakes fantasy, morally grey choices, and romances forged in the eye of a storm, A Curse of Storms and Scorn belongs on your shelf.
ARC Review: This book took a little bit to get going but then I was absorbed. I was in love with the story until the final section (The Pettifey and the Queen), and maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for a happy ending and this ending left me frustrated, but still very intrigued for the next book. The writing itself is very well done. It’s very detailed and allows you to step into this world the author has created. There is (very) slow burn that is somewhat present, not as strong as others I’ve read, but then the resulting “spice” scene between the two main characters is so beautifully written and intimate.
Spoilers: Our FMC starts out as an underestimated human who is striving to prove herself in a world ruled by men. However, when her world literally comes crashing down and she is kidnapped by our MMC, everything changes. She is entered into a “Hunger Games” type trial (almost like the Purging Trials in Powerless), and is expected to not survive and ends up thriving AND saving as many other participants as she can. The FMC and MMC inevitably fall for each other but then are turned against one another by the “evil” queen, that she ends up overthrowing. Sadly, her hatred for the MMC is now a stain on her soul and she refuses to hear his side of things (thus my frustration). As Queen, she volunteers herself for further trials and the book ends with the Stag (think Shadow and Bone) giving a title and power to the MMC despite the FMC’s refusal to name him as her consort. Essentially, enemies to lovers to enemies.
Overall though, great read and definitely recommend!

This book enthralled me from the very beginning! Everything about this book was excellent! From the fae trails, which were refreshingly new and different, which I loved that. It wasn’t focused on romance of it but on the FMC, Eury experiences as she moves through this new world.
I think the FMC, Eury moves very well after being forced into a world that is wholly overwhelming and 100% different from what she grew up as.
Dorian...MMC. I can say is where did he come from? Shimmering in the sidelines and then BAM, he is there front, center and oh my fucking god....Dorian yes, please!
I think the relationship between them was perfect and I know there is more to come and cannot wait for that!
I feel like some of the side characters were random? Not sure how I about them, like Faun... I feel like we should not trust her, like at all...
The world building was a new life of its own. Human and fae and the fae completely separate from the humans. I cannot wait to see more from the other courts and dive deeper into the history of this land. All and all I really loved this series and cannot wait for the next one! I am sure it will feel like forever but it will be worth it!
This book was really good and kept me interested the whole time. It started with a short prologue from the past, then jumped straight into action, which was exciting but also a bit confusing at first because I wasn’t sure what was going on or who the main character really was. I wish there had been a little more backstory or build-up in the beginning to help me understand things better. But the build and unfolding of the story did happen.
I loved the slow burn romance between the main characters. The female lead seems physically weak but is actually really strong in her mind and values. The male lead comes off as tough and scary at first, but by the end, he’s totally soft for her. Their relationship has a lot of tension and angst, mostly because the queen controls the guy, which causes lies, distrust, and drama.
The action scenes were awesome and reminded me a bit of *The Hunger Games*, but in a fae world where the fight is to become the queen’s champion. It was really exciting to read. The only thing I didn’t like much were some weird adult scenes with the queen that felt unnecessary.
The ending leaves a lot open for a sequel, which I’m definitely interested in reading if it happens. Overall, this book was a great mix of romance, action, and fantasy with strong characters and a story that kept me hooked.
I did receive an ARC of this book, but all the opinions and comments are my own.
