Rate this book
As National Guard soldiers bring conflict and hard choices to Ridgefield, Sarah, Emma, and Joanie scramble to relocate the children. Meanwhile, Rick and Duncan discover both opportunity and heartache in a fire-ravaged factory town, and in Greenbelt, a final assault from Victor threatens to shatter what remains of NASA’s last hope in Final Extinction Book 4.

From 4-million-copy bestselling author Mike Kraus and the acclaimed Justin Bell comes a new thrilling tale of survival.

Without warning, a brand-new satellite system misfires and unleashes focused solar energy that ignites cities, wipes out power grids, and kills billions in mere hours.

In the quiet suburbs of Pennsylvania, Sarah Kent and her daughter Emma barely escape the destruction as everything around them is turned to ash. Huddled in their basement and with nowhere safe to turn, they begin a desperate journey to create their own shelter as the world unravels around them.

Deep beneath the Rocky Mountains, Rick Kent is hard at work on a mining job, only realizing that something has gone terribly wrong when he emerges late at night and discovers that the world has fallen apart during his absence. Now he faces the ultimate one where civilization is gone, survival is brutal, and reaching his family might be impossible.

Meanwhile, at NASA's headquarters in Maryland, the surviving members of the team that helped launch the doomed Umbra program must decide whether to run or stay and try to fix Umbra before it can destroy the scattered pieces of civilization that still remain.

Where Shadows Fell, book 4 in the excellent Final Extinction series, continues the story of the Kent family in the aftermath of the catastrophic failure of a satellite system meant to control climate change fails and does the opposite. While Rick continues his journey home with Duncan accompanying him, Sarah, Emma and Joanie try to figure out the repercussions of the National Guard's arrival and Erika continues her attempts to regain control of the satellites and get the mirrors functioning properly despite a lack of trust at the Maryland facility. The writing is immaculate, that's all there is to say about it. That is a huge compliment! The book ends on a cliffhanger that will make the wait for book 5 a long one! 5/5 stars! Highly recommended for anyone with a taste for apocalyptic survival thrillers and well written thrillers in general!

The fourth book in the Final Extinction series, Where Shadows Fell, really ramped up the storyline. There was the ever increasing dangers from the sun as well as the threats from others. There were gut wrenching moments, the sense of loss and sadness, along with the need to carry on from all our groups. Mr Kraus and Mr Bell definitely know how to write a great story , one that keeps you riveted in every chapter and longing for the next book.

This continues a good series with a very interesting tech-gone-bad premise. A lot happens and it reinforces the concept that you should not become too fond of characters in a post-apocalyptic novel. I was very worried about one of my favourite characters not continuing, but relieved when he/she is going to persist. Sarah really steps up here and is willing to push back against military occupation. I look forward to the next book with the hope that this can all be made good again.

OMG!

From struggle to hope to anxiety to desperation to hopeless to hope again. Roller coaster reading. I am thirsty like the characters. I will quench my thirst with the 5th book in the series.

Realistic scenarios and character development

The character of Duncan and his developing independence to make his own decisions impressive in its reality. Smooth transitions between chapters and individual series editions. Very engrossing.

Fantastic once again. Impossible to put down until you find the answer to what happened. Danger all around. Characters that have you feel a part of their struggle.
