Rate this book
Driven by hope and a whisper of family still alive, Sarah joins the National Guard's perilous mission into war-torn Pittsburgh, only to uncover horrors she never imagined - and the most gut-wrenching stowaway she could ever imagine. Meanwhile, Rick and Duncan fight to survive in a collapsing city, a fateful reunion leads to a final stand against Umbra, forcing the group to make a horrifying, unthinkable choice in Final Extinction Book 6.

From 4-million-copy bestselling author Mike Kraus and the acclaimed Justin Bell comes a new thrilling tale of survival.

Without warning, a brand-new satellite system misfires and unleashes focused solar energy that ignites cities, wipes out power grids, and kills billions in mere hours.

In the quiet suburbs of Pennsylvania, Sarah Kent and her daughter Emma barely escape the destruction as everything around them is turned to ash. Huddled in their basement and with nowhere safe to turn, they begin a desperate journey to create their own shelter as the world unravels around them.

Deep beneath the Rocky Mountains, Rick Kent is hard at work on a mining job, only realizing that something has gone terribly wrong when he emerges late at night and discovers that the world has fallen apart during his absence. Now he faces the ultimate one where civilization is gone, survival is brutal, and reaching his family might be impossible.

Meanwhile, at NASA's headquarters in Maryland, the surviving members of the team that helped launch the doomed Umbra program must decide whether to run or stay and try to fix Umbra before it can destroy the scattered pieces of civilization that still remain.

Final Extinction goes out with a bang in That Broken Darkness!
Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2026
Format: Kindle
That Broken Darkness, book 6 and the final in the Final Extinction series, continues the Story of Rick, Sarah, Erika Emma, Duncan, Joanie and the the rest of the characters trying to survive the catastrophe caused by a malfunction in the Umbra program. The series was excellent, but That Broken Darkness is exceptional! It has great plotting, pacing, characters, narrative quality and descriptions! For me, Duncan is the standout character of the series. His character is written with true care and respect, despite the authors never pulling any punches and showcase his transformation throughout the series, from timid and shy to brave, and still shy, but much less so at the end of the series than the beginning. Bell and Kraus seem to produce something exceptional with every collaboration! Overall, 5/5 stars for That Broken Darkness and the entirety of the Final Extinction series! Highly recommended for fans of apocalyptic survival thrillers or just thrillers in general! I can't wait to see what Bell and Kraus create the next time they get together!

The ends what has been an excellent series and it was a very exciting and worthwhile final book. The series has been well-written and edited, with only a very few issues (like Greenbelt, Pennsylvania instead of in Maryland, in one case). All of our favorite characters get to shine, Rick maybe a little less so because he descends into a lot of angst and self-recrimination for being gone from home and for making an astonishing decision to go on a combat mission the day after critical surgery for his gunshot wound. Duncan has become one of my favorite characters. He is a good and decent guy that has a talent for fixing things all of which make his developmental issues not a concern. He was a rock star in this series and part of a well-deserved 5 star.

The Broken Darkness - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

It's only been a month since the first satellite-enhanced sun storms wiped out millions of people in Mike Kraus and Justin Bell's Final Extinction series, yet here we are at the dawn of a new era in The Broken Darkness - and the last book to feature Rick, Sarah, Joannie, Emma, Dana, Erika and others, in a dynamic epilogue to tie up the loose ends.

See who makes it through the many swirling emotions, full-on actions, danger and betrayal. You certainly won't be disappointed, so grab a copy of The Broken Darkness as soon as you can...then tell all your friends about it too!

such a great ending to the series!!

Difficult book to put down! You begin to think of the characters as your family. One can only hope that humanity can really learn from their mistakes before they kill the planet! It’s a great ride!

Chaotic results

Is there a way to fix what humanity has done with our environment? This series gives a theoretical look at what could happen. I like to think there are more people wanting to help other than people who want to hinder, abuse, or harm.

Another amazing story about survival in an apocalypse. How will everything turn out, can they find their families and a place to live. Maybe even start over. Don’t miss out on this outstanding series by these two amazing authors.

great story and characters

Even with the horrors and evilness, heroes appear. A series worth waiting for and one you want to never end.

Excellent series. Quite a bit of filler. But I enjoy the story structure. I’m reading some more of your stuff right now.
