This is pure epic fantasy, rich world-building, layered histories, complex realms, and a magic system that feels truly original. The beginning is a bit slow because there’s a lot of foundational setup, but it absolutely pays off once the plot kicks into gear. Stick with it. It’s worth it.
The narration by Gill Mills is phenomenal. She brings emotion, depth, and nuance to every character. You can hear the fear, grief, longing, and courage in her delivery. It elevates the entire story.
The world-building is dense, but thankfully it doesn’t consume the whole book. Once the groundwork settles, the plot picks up quickly, action, danger, prophecy, political tension, and sweeping fantasy landscapes. The magic system is especially compelling; it feels unique rather than recycled from other high-fantasy worlds.
This story follows two Guardians: Alora, tasked with finding the Stone of Soul & Dorian, tasked with finding a nameless woman who can unlock it. They have separated journeys, with intersecting paths. Both missions feel high stakes and emotionally charged.
Their journeys include: encounters with mortals who may be more than they seem, unexpected love after thousands of years of immortality, memories from old lives resurfacing with new meaning, and danger from every angle as Chaos creeps into the mortal realm
It’s a slow burn romantically and a fast burn emotionally. The forced-proximity moments hit just right, and the prophecy elements give everything weight.
I enjoyed this story and can’t wait to follow these two Guardians into whatever trouble comes next.
⚠️ Note: If you’re doing the audiobook, check trigger warnings beforehand. They didn’t bother me, but some listeners may want the heads-up.
