Featured in last grandma reads session of 2020.

We finished this book today - it had a nifty mystery about a theft on the Mayflower, and these kid detectives solved it, of course. It was a longish read, attention wandered now and again. It was helpful to have a word puzzle involved - they'd have to look for letters in the pictures shown in order to parse out a sentence by the book's end. This was easily done by our crew.

They liked the book, but are on the fence about reading anymore from the series. We will let it rest and revisit that thought in 2021.

Ron Roy's A to Z Mysteries are fun and easy to read for young people, but not boring for us adults. My daughter (who is seven) and I enjoy reading these together. She has recently transitioned into chapter books. Anyway, this wasn't my favorite. I did find it rather predictable, as did my daughter. And Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose make some not-so-great choices in this one - like going on a ferry without telling an adult and then hiding in the Mayflower. Anyway, 4 stars because I really do like these books and Roy keeps them fun and exciting. Also, the Mayflower Treasure Hunt also has a surprise, where readers need to find hidden letters to make out a sentence at the end of the book - bonus fun for kids!

I would recommend the series A to Z Mysteries, but especially The Mayflower Treasure Hunt because their are so many weird and cool things in the book. The main character was Dink. He was my favorite character because he was curious. I think the author Ron Roy made this book to persuade the reader and would recommend this book to people that like to read mystery books. The surprising part of the book was where the necklace was. I would not change the ending or anything because the book had a lot of plot twist.

Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose are in Massachusetts for a Thanksgiving get together with family and friends. While there they visit the Mayflower II, visit a Plimouth Plantation, visit a museum about the early settlers, and solve a mystery pertaining to a stolen necklace that happened on the original Mayflower.

This new series has a new feature, the reader has to find hidden letters in the pictures to solve the riddle at the end of the book. We as a family has fun reading and searching for the letters.

The kids set out to solve a four hundred(ish) year old crime while on their inexplicably long Thanksgiving break. This is my first A to Z Mystery and I found it about as predictable as I expected from a kids mystery book. I identified the bad guy within a couple sentences of introduction, as well as the "sneaky twist." Exploring historical locations with a replica Mayflower and reenactment actors all over the place was a little spooky.

My son and I have enjoyed most of the mysteries in this series, but this one we did not like that much. The plot is especially unbelievable and predictable, and the kids make more poor choices than usual (taking a ferry to another town without telling anyone, giving out personal details to strangers, etc.).

Fiona: 4.5 stars...I thought this one had more action and things happening in it than the last one.

Regan: 3 stars. Maybe 4. It had some unexpected parts for once but they called the Wampanoag “Indians”...

Liam: 1 Star. I’m sorry. I just...didn’t really like it much.

This was my first A to Z Mystery. It was okay, for a 3rd grade book. But there were at least two glaring errors in the story, which for a 9 year old isn't a big deal.

A cute educational children's book about the Mayflower and the first settlers in Plymouth Massachusetts. Plymouth is a very important location for me personally, so this book hit true to my heart.

Easy story about the Pilgrims and the Mayflower. Cool
Mystery within the setting of Plymouth. I am enjoying this series and realize it’s a good one to recommend to my lower reading level students.

Read aloud with my boys. They loved it, especially since we paired it with videos from the museum in Plymouth, MA so they had a better understanding of the historical context.

My 7 - year old has finished the entire set of the A to Z mysteries (including all the super editions). The super editions are lengthier and more satisfying. I started reading them because I wanted to find out how good these mysteries are and after I started, I finished the entire set myself. This will be a common review for all the books in the set (so please forgive me if you see this repeated under another book).

First of all, the mystery part of the book is fairly simple for an adult, but I can see how it can keep a kid engrossed. The characters are playful, around the same age as my kid now, so are very relatable. Yes, there are some characteristics which can be a little irritating, but they didn't really bother me too much as to take away from the stories. The other con is that these little kids are left unmonitored in many of their adventures (I am not a helicopter parent, but it felt a little strange, especially when they are out of the country altogether).

That being said, now what I loved about the stories -

1) Most of the stories are based in different cities, and sometimes different countries, so the travel perspective is amazing. We, as a family, love to travel and every time the kids in the books traveled somewhere it made the story more exciting to me (as well as my kid). My kid had comments on how they went to Key West and later Washington D.C "just like us".

2) There are strong characters of both genders, the villains are of different genders as well, so the stereotyping is considerably less (there was a female pilot in one of the books that stood out to me) and I love it that girls reading the books have some good role models. I would always like more female strong characters shown ofcourse :).

I'm sure my kids will be enjoying many more of the author's books in the future :)

Man, who are these kids' parents to let them get involved in so many dangerous mysteries? Another in Roy Roy's sweet, straight-forward "A-Z Mystery Series", finds our trio of sleuths in Plymouth, MA searching for a hidden necklace that was last seen on the "Mayflower". Though this book suffers like many others in the series with an anti-climax of an ending, the book's first two-thirds fly by with the titular treasure hunt. I've liked pretty much all of this series as entry-level mystery books for my son, but I found this one kept me reading long after a responsible father should have told his kid goodnight. Apologies for the late-nights, son. I just had to see how Dink got out of this one!
