Six months have passed since Brooke Woods stumbled back into the real world from Uland, a parallel realm of ancient magic, monsters and Factions on the brink of war. There, she was more than a teenage girl. She was the Seer. One of the Uland Seven. A shining light in the darkness.
Now, she's just Brooke again. Until, that is, Uland starts calling her back.
Alongside her closest friends, Dale Reed and Charlie Flint, Brooke is drawn back into the secret world, and straight into trouble. Things are different now. The shadow of Doomgaard is growing. The fragile alliances between Uland's divided Factions are crumbling. Their Woodsgirl friend, Willow, has been taken prisoner. And Orchidema-the much-revered Empress of Nymm-is dying.
Their mission quickly becomes cross treacherous lands, avoid ravenous monsters, and face enemies old and new to first save Willow, and then the Empress. The fate of Uland rests in their hands once again. And this time, their evil nemesis Decymero won't underestimate them.
A gripping tale of loyalty, courage, and destiny, Empress of Nymm is the second installment in The Book of Uland series, perfect for fans of all ages who love immersive fantasy worlds, sprawling character arcs, and high-stakes adventure.
This was such a fun, fantastic read. It was beautifully written and the world building was incredible! I loved how the story referenced The Soulburn Talisman so we wouldn’t forget anything. I can’t wait to read the next.
The sequel to The Soulburn Talisman, this YA portal fantasy has our human characters from the first book travelling back to Uland, this time with an extra person. This was fun and I had a good time reading it. I like all the characters, and the new one was a nice addition. It's not a book where the pace lets up, there's always something happening, which kept my interest throughout the story. A series that's definitely worth dipping into.
This was such a fun and exciting read! As an adult now I don’t normally read YA anymore but the empress of nymm brought so much nostalgia for me! It definitely gave me narnia and Percy Jackson vibes and brought me right back to my childhood! We follow Brooke, Charlie and Dale as they head back to Uland and we’re sucked straight back into the action that will keep you on the edge of your seat! The world building was great and I was so immersed in the world of Uland. The battles, plot twists and friendships made me fall in love with this book. Thank you so much David for sending me this book I’m so glad I was able to read it!
3.75/5 ✩ - YA fantasy, adventure, close knit groups
"She'd learned long ago not to question what went down in Uland"
────୨ৎ──── Immediate thoughts This is definitely a change of speed for me, not really something i go for in terms of genre and taget audience but i enjoyed this! For it being the second book (but the first ive read) i didn't feel confused, i got enough context from this about what happened in the last book. I liked it
what I loved
the world buidling and imagery the movie in my head was beautiful. The descriptions were so thorough without being overwhelming. I loved this aspect of the book.
the chemistry between our characters so so fo fun to read. the witty banter, and just comedic timing through their dialogue, I loved it. Tonyas character added this freshness almost, i loved the dynamic between this little group.
the characters themselves in terms of the actual characters i love that we were shown and not told about them, like the personalities were so distinct and i loved them as individuals.
what I didn’t love
the chapters i do not like long chapters. i dont like feeling like im not progressing through even though i am because a chapter is too long (i changed my kindle setting because seeing i had 58 minutes left send me west). also the names of the chapters, i feel like they were a bit boring, especially because so much is going on and its this beautiful fantasy world like, the basic chapter names brought me out of this land i was immersed in.
────୨ৎ──── Overall Even though I probably wouldn't reach for this (because it is more for younger audiences), I am pleasantly suprised at how hooked I was and that ENDING. oh my. I am so intrigued to continue. I enjoyed for sure
Empress of Nymm by David McIlroy is the second book in The Book of Uland series for young adult readers. Uland is a magical world that exists alongside our own, but finding a way into it is not an easy task. It is a land of magic, monsters, and creatures from folklore, and it can be a very dangerous place. In Book Two, we are reunited with Brooke Woods, Dale Reed, and Charlie Flint and learn what happened to them after returning home. There was a genuine sense of the struggle these young children encountered after their ordeal in book one, and something I hope is highlighted more as we delve into the lives of these heroes. Without too many spoilers, these three find themselves once again in Uland, but things aren’t quite the same. So much has happened since they were last there, but it’s great to see them reunite with Willow, the fiery woodsperson - plus some new characters along for the ride. This is very much a good vs evil magical adventure with some darker elements and sad moments. Like the first book, it is full of action, yet this time there is some breathing room to appreciate this new world. David’s world-building is sublime, and Uland feels alive as we follow our heroes into a new part of this magical realm full of wonder and dangers. His writing truly brings this place to life; it also made me hungry sometimes. The Book of Uland series is looking set to be the modern-day Narnia. Thank you, David, for sending me an ARC to review. This was another exciting dive into this magical place, and I think when people are asked which door to a fantasy world they’d pick, Uland is going to be a top choice.
Empress of Nymm is the second installment in The Book of Uland series by David McIlroy, and while it wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, I can still appreciate what it brings to the table.
The story picks up six months after the events of the first book, with Brooke being pulled back into the magical realm of Uland alongside her loyal friends. From the first chapter, the stakes are high, the pacing is tight, and the character dynamics are engaging. David’s writing is polished, and the plot is well-structured, with clear progression and strong emotional beats.
That said, the fantasy elements didn’t resonate with me personally. I tend to lean away from the young adult fantasy genre, and this book is very much steeped in that style; complete with magical realms, chosen-ones, and big destiny-driven quests. While that will absolutely appeal to many readers, it just didn’t quite connect with me.
However, I want to be clear: that’s not a criticism of the book itself, but more of a mismatch with my personal reading tastes. If you do enjoy immersive fantasy worlds, loyal friendships, magical lore, and heroic journeys, I think you’ll find a lot to love here. The worldbuilding is imaginative, the tension is real, and the emotional stakes feel earned.
A big thank you to David McIlroy for reaching out and offering me the chance to be part of the ARC team. It was a pleasure to get a sneak peek into a world he’s clearly poured his heart into. Even though I wasn’t the ideal reader for this one, I know this series will strike a chord with the right audience.
Empress of Nymm is the sequel to Soulburn Talisman, and after reading the first I was so excited to find out where the gang’s adventure would take them!
Brooke, Dale, and Charlie are having a hard time adjusting back to normal life after their first adventure in the magical world they stumbled into - they find themselves feeling out of place going about their old day-to-day. Luckily, a few months later they are called back to continue their quest to defeat Decymero and the Doomguard Knights.
This book did a great job of focusing in on Willow’s storyline without diverting too much from the main story - I think everything tied in perfectly. The first book hints at Willow’s importance and this one provided context and backstory for her while still keeping the story moving forward.
While the book is primarily targeted for YA and the characters are in their early tweens, I’m finding the series enjoyable and engaging as an adult. I feel like the story draws elements from a lot of the classic epic adventure stories we know and love.
I like how in both book one and two, you get the sense that they have won the battle but not yet the war. It makes you look forward for what’s to come. Excited to see how their magical friends will navigate the normal world!
Big thank you to David for the ARC of Empress of Nymm as well as a copy of Soulburn Talisman, they were a pleasure to read :)
✨ Okay fantasy lovers, you NEED to hear about this one! Empress of Nymm by David McIlroy is the second book in The Book of Uland series, and honestly… I think Uland might just be the modern-day Narnia.
📖 We’re back with Brooke, Dale, and Charlie after their first wild adventure in Uland. But here’s the thing—coming back to the real world hasn’t been easy. They feel out of place, like they don’t quite belong anymore… and then suddenly, they’re called back into Uland for another mission. And trust me, this time, it’s darker, it’s more dangerous, and the stakes are even higher.
🌲 One of my favorite parts? We get way more of Willow. If you loved her in book one, this sequel really dives into her backstory while still keeping the action moving. Plus, there are new characters, more monsters, more magic… and some moments that honestly made me a little emotional.
🍲 Also, random side note—David’s world-building is so good it literally made me hungry at times. Like… who knew fantasy food descriptions could hit this hard?
⚔️ If you loved Soulburn Talisman, this sequel is everything you want—battles, heartbreak, adventure, and that feeling that they’ve won the battle but the war isn’t over yet. YA readers are gonna eat this up, but honestly? As an adult, I had such a blast reading it. Huge thank you to David for the ARC—this series is quickly becoming one of my favorite escapes.
In Empress of Nymm, David McIlroy brings us back to the vivid, high-stakes world of Uland in a gripping sequel to The Soulburn Talisman. A few months have passed since Brooke returned to the real world, leaving behind her role as the Seer. But the magic of Uland isn’t done with her yet!
The realm calls her back, alongside friends Dale and Charlie, and the stakes are much higher !
The shadow of Doomhaard looms large and fate of Uland rests in their hands once again. I was delighted to be brought back into the Uland.
The Soulburn Talisman reminded me of my beloved childhood series like The Chronicles of Narnia and The Spiderwick Chronicles. The series is packed with magic, danger, heart, and a real sense of wonder.
Empress of Nymm is the perfect continuation: darker, more epic, and emotionally rich. I don’t want to give too much away , but I think YA readers and fantasy fans of all ages will absolutely love.
The first book in this series was the first book I received from an author and I absolutely loved it. This book continues the story from "The Soulburn Talisman".
I loved the pace of the story and all the magical elements of it. The descriptions allows you to imagine everything perfectly and they are not too long, just right for a clear view. The dangerous and intense events are followed by resting and somehow comforting moments.
I really liked the fact that even if the main characters are important and have powers in the magic world, they are still kids and act like it most of the time. In this book the character's feelings are shown a bit more intense, I really enjoyed the subtle and inocent hits of young love beginnings and the strong friendships.
The ending was a bit bittersweet but the epilogul gives hope for the next journey in this story.
I enjoyed reading this book and I am very curious about the next volume in this series.
This book was a fun read! Perfect for younger readers who are starting to get into fantasy and need something to hook them into the genre. Empress of Nymm starts right off with action and intrigue, leaving the reader wondering what’s going to happen next. The stakes are high and the pace is fast, once again emphasizing this book’s ability to appeal to readers looking for a fantasy that keeps them engaged with the ever-moving plot. The portal fantasy aspect of this book is so fun and interesting because it has those hilarious moments when modern characters from our world clash with people from another world, thus creating a story based on the context of both worlds. Additionally, the world building is easy to understand, and it allows for a very atmospheric setting, which includes delightful high fantasy aspects that the public likes so much (magical creatures, expansive imagery, etc). Lastly, the characters were all relatable and true to their age, which I always think is important when writing from the point of view of younger people. I’m usually peeved when characters don’t act their age, but this was not a problem in this book. The character dynamics, both intrapersonal and interpersonal, were smooth and realistic, making the friendship between the core four strong and sweet. All in all, if you like: YA portal fantasy (think Narnia), found family, high stakes, good vs evil, and a fairytale-like setting, this book is for you!
Keeping in line with the previous book, this one too shows hints of Narnia (what with the unwilling new character transported to the magical world at war, the difference in time lapses and The Copperdawn Voyager), which, without being overpowering, are subtle and nostalgic. I almost expected the time lapse to be longer, and I'm sure McIlroy knew what he was doing when Quillorin referred to himself as a "history scholar".
Book two tidily tied up certain open ends from Book one. The author's foreshadowing of Willow's importance paid off cleanly in this instalment.
The romantic undercurrents remain pleasantly understated. I like that the author doesn't derail from the YA fantasy genre into romance.
Enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the Soulburn Talisman.
A fantastic follow up, just as good as the first book.
This is a great YA fantasy. It's fast paced and has all of your favourite fantasy elements. The characters are likeable and the world is expansive and interesting.
Younger readers will love the fast paced, action filled nature of the book and adults can enjoy something which still has all the best classic fantasy elements without being dragged down by too much politics or darkness, the perfect pallet cleanser.
The second book serves to further expand this impressive world, introduces more lovable characters and keeps you on your toes as you continue to follow Brooke, Dale, Charlie and Willow's stories.
Thank you David for sending me the E-ARC to review.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been so angry at an author for introducing me to their work before the series was complete.
*a copy was given in exchange for an honest review*
I didn’t expect this to be as immersive of a read as it was. Not only was I hungry at the approximate places they were famished and tired right along with them, I, too, wondered why we don’t have more feasts to celebrate accomplishments. I was excited to turn every page and constantly going through a Rolodex of possibilities at every turn trying predict where each plot point would end up. Even when I was sort of right I was still wrong enough to be blindsided and that added an extra thrill to the experience.
Overall, many of the fantasy and adventure books of my millennial heart loved haven’t stood the test of time but seeing some of my favorite the themes presented here in unexpected ways has me excited to share with my own children! (Perhaps sooner rather than later because my oldest just finished her most recent book and is looking for her next KU read).
Empress of Nymm is book two in The Book of Uland series. While these are geared more toward young teens, as an adult I found the series just as enjoyable. Coming back to Uland with the heroes and seeing where their story went next was such a treat.
The author’s imagination is truly a work of art—the way he brings this world to life is so vivid and creative. I especially loved the addition of a new character in this book and how seamlessly she fit in with the rest of the crew.
I can’t wait to see what’s next for Brooke, Dale, and Charlie!
✨ Huge thank you to David for the ARC of Empress of Nymm (and the copy of Soulburn Talisman)—I thoroughly enjoyed both.
Right from the beginning it was giving chronicles of Barbie vibes but a little darker and more dangerous with all the children has to deal with. There were some parts that had you on the edge of your seat, eager to discovered how it panned out. Mid way through the book when it seemed the gang was en route to their main quest it got a slow and took some self motivation to continue. We made it through though and there were still more interesting parts in the back half that made you glad you kept reading. This was a great rendition on YA fantasy and sets the group up for more adventures in the third.
This second book was a fun read. It was action packed and full of adventure.
With it being the second book there was less world building in the beginning, meaning we got into the action quicker which made it that bit more enjoyable.
As with the first book I did sometimes feel like the characters read younger than they were meant to be but it was less in this book.
I would definitely recommend this to young readers, I can see this being a book that gets young people excited to read.
The addition of a new main character and her powers was exciting. I did miss some of the characters from the first book though.
I just want to thank the author for the copy of the arc.
4.25⭐️ The second instalment in the Unseen world. Empress of Nymm carries on from Ths Soulburn Talisman which are teen/YA books and like the worlds of narnia crossed with lord of the rings. Its follows the journey of 3 teens who are sucked back into the world to help save the day (again) but without the time constraints. Along the line they come across another friend who was also pulled into the world without their knowledge. The book is fast passed with lots of twists. And I’m hoping there’s a 3rd book coming out which delves more into Brooke’s powers because I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface!!
I enjoyed reading this book thoroughly. It's second in the Uland book series, and I'm super glad I didn't read it in a hurry, when I first got it, as I was knee deep in other genres then. I loved the world building (although it took me a little while to immense myself in it, maybe because I am new to fantasy books) The tension and plot twists definitely kept me turning pages! And even though the characters were young (to me an oldie!) they still felt relatable. And I liked the way it ended too, kinda makes you anticipate what happens in book three. (I'm sure there's a book three)
If you love YA Fantasy, I would definitely recommend!
What a read! I’m sorry but this was my favourite read of 2025 by a LONG shot😍
Empress Of Nymm part 2 of The Book Of Uland.
This was an AMAZING read, I honestly didn’t want it to end! I had to stop reading it about an hour before the end because I want to prolong it. However I finished it first thing and it was 10⭐️😍🤩
The story telling, the character/world building & the imagination that has gone into this series is 10/10!l, It really blew me away!
The twist and turns this book took, the way it ended! I cannot wait for book 3😍
This book took the series to a whole new level! There was mystery, horror, suspense, and so much more! I throughly enjoyed this book even more than book 1 (idk how David was able to top such a strong book 1 but he did) and loved the world building and historical background knowledge we gained! Also wanted to say that the new core character we gained in this book was a great edition and really played well off the other 4! Great choice! Highly recommend this series to everyone I know!
This is the second book in the series, and I've grown genuinely attached to the main characters, Brooke, Charlie, Dale, and their fantasy-world friend, Willow. They’re relatable, likable, and easy to root for.
Traveling with them through Uland was a fun adventure with plenty of drama, page-turning action, and surprising twists, with every challenge deepening their friendship. Some story elements reminded me of Harry Potter, but I didn’t mind at all. I loved that series too.
I truly didn’t want this story to end, and I'm looking forward to the next book!
Its a 4.5 for me. I was lucky enough to read this book as an arc read. And, OMG the way this ended i need more and now I have so many questions and have to wait to find the answers. The way this was written with references to the Soul Burn Talisman was great and made sure you didnt forget it or what happened in that book. I also loved how the author wrote it so the when new characters where introduced them fit perfectly into the story line and I for one cant wait for book three so I can have my questions answered and see what happens next.
Being back in this world was everything. It felt like slipping right back into a place I didn’t even realize I missed until I was there again. The new challenges were wild, and honestly, I loved every second of them. They weren’t easy, but that’s what made it so good—the way the characters stepped up, faced everything head-on, and refused to back down. It kept me hooked, cheering them on, and feeling like I was right there with them through it all.
A magical, action-packed adventure full of danger, wonder, and heartfelt reunions. I have yet to read book 1 however, this book gave me the same feelings I had reading The Cruel Prince and Narnia—stepping into an unexpected world filled with new rules, mysteries, and adventures just beyond our own. It’s a fun, engaging read that I think young readers will love. I even told my little brother about it, and he’s already excited to dive in!
Although I enjoyed the Soulburn Talisman, I enjoyed the pacing and dialogue in this book much more! David McIlroy‘s descriptive language transports you into the world of Uland alongside our three main characters and take you for a wild ride. I love that a lot of the discoveries that were made in this book were the completion of plot lines that were started in the previous book. Such a fun read that makes me wish these books were out when I was in middle school/high school.
I received this as an ARC copy from the author (thank you David). I enjoy both this and the first book.
I felt like it gave Narnia vibes. The world building was creative and fun. The books felt magical and warm.
I gave 4 stars because I did feel like the books were a bit young for me. I wasn’t sure what the target audience is but I’d say pre teen/teens will absolutely love this book!
Great writing from David as well. Overall a good read and I’d recommend to a younger audience 🙂
I loved returning to Uland in this second book and embracing the new characters that were introduced! As always I love Willow and really enjoyed the character development of the others on the adventure. The empire of Nymm was beautifully described and made you want to visit! The author does a wonderful job of developing the antagonist and building towards the climax of the book. I didn’t want to put the book down and definitely cannot wait until the third book comes out!!
We pick up 6 months after book 1’s events and are thrown back into the groups adventure with a new addition.
Getting to see more of Willow’s story was throughly enjoyable and the evens of this books kept me in the edge of my seat. Slight faster paced than the first book I would say with an action packed ending.
Very intrigued to see what happens after the final events of the book!
This was such a fun read! David did a great job of building such a beautiful, magical world. I was completely lost in it from start to finish and enjoyed every page!
The characters were dynamic and funny, it was very fast-paced, and had a lot of heart in it in addition to the adventure and excitement.
Great for readers of all ages. I highly recommend!
