The world’s greatest assassin. An enchanted prison. And a deadly mission—to set him free.
Legendary assassin Locan A’Shadow has been ambushed and captured by raiders. His companion Cetrik pursues the kidnappers across land and sea to Rameon—capital of the Dominion empire.
Rameon is more beautiful and deadly than Cetrik could ever have imagined—a twisting maze of blood and gold, where senators and courtesans play vicious games of power.
But the city is on the brink of disaster…
A vast army of nomads has invaded, sweeping all before them. Now they are almost at Rameon’s walls. There is only one way to save the city—killing the warlord who binds them together.
The Dominion doesn’t need a hero. It needs an assassin…
But Locan is locked deep in Rameon’s most notorious prison as warring factions bid on his life. Can Cetrik find a way to break him out, before the greatest city in the world is burned to ashes?
A thrilling and action-packed epic fantasy adventure, The Assassin’s War is perfect for fans of Joe Abercrombie, John Gwynne, and Scott Lynch.

R.S. Moule is the author of the Erland Saga. He has a passion for writing epic fantasy grounded by human flaws and desires, set in worlds inspired by a childhood divided between his home in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds and summers spent exploring the rugged coastline and deep glens of the Isle of Man. He now lives in South London with his wife, Eloise, and their cat, Tinks. When not reading or writing, he can often be found playing guitar, watching football, or looking for his keys.
I will never tire of reading Locan A’Shadow and Cetrik’s adventures. And when I say adventures I really mean fighting for their lives by the skin of their teeth. And also Morvolt, who steals the page and the plot every time. The twists and turns in Assassin’s War had me on the edge of my seat. Every time I thought the boys had an edge, here comes the consequences of their actions to knock them down a peg or 10. Thanks to the delight that is the audiobooks of this series, I can only read Locan’s dialogue with a roguish French accent which just FITS. If you need a good fantasy series that brings you back to your D&D days, this is your jam. (I also had in my head that this was the end of the series and I was pleasantly surprised to see there is one more book coming!)
Assassin’s War hits shelves May 8. Do yourself a favor and get lost in the adventure in this series, it’s worth it!
Huge thank you to SecondSky and author R.S. Moule for the gifted eARC. All opinions are my own.
Wow. This book is speculative fiction at its finest. R.S. Moule's "Legends of the Shadow" series keeps getting better as it goes. The first book, I gave a 3/5 stars- seeing it as an okay start, but with plenty to offer. The second book (which I eagerly awaited), I gave a 4/5 stars- seeing it as a great step up, and a great continuation of the series. Now we get to the third book, "The Assassin's War", and I give this a 5/5 score, as one of the top reads of 2026 (something I'll say in December as well).
The story in the book is a roller coaster- non-stop excitement from beginning to end. The setting is really well described to us all, as are the new additions of characters. Our usual heroes, Locan and Cetrik, continue to be as wonderful as they are- which I mean both genuinely and with a hint of sarcasm. Seriously, this is one of the top new bromances out there- even if both of them, especially Locan, would go to great lengths to deny that.
The episodic structure really seems to work, in the same way that we see in other series "Riyria" and "The Lies of Locke Lamora" (surprise, surprise, both books also have terrific bromances). Each of these three books of "Legends of the Shadow" takes our heroes to a new land, where they have to use their wits, skills, and even some luck, to solve some great conflict. This book was the best of Locan and Cetrik's adventures.
The setting is in the Rameon Dominion, a decaying empire- one that is rife with corruption, wealth inequality, plague, rebellion, and barbarians at the gates. Locan is seemingly the only one who can stop an oncoming horde of enemies, but he starts out imprisoned, and a target of the petty vindictive Emperor. Cetrik has to use his wits in stealth operations and political maneuvering to save his friend's head...and let's be honest, his own, much more often.
The political setup and worldbuilding in Rameon were terrific. There are some real world vibes that I've been noticing about corruption and authoritarianism, but even fears about the threat that anarchy or "might makes right" makes things even worse, with zero checks on any sort of leadership. Some of the tough questions are asked in this book: would you prefer a corrupt Senate, barbarian horde, or rolling the dice on another leadership?
From the beginning of the story, I predicted what the premise of the fourth book would be. 25% of the way through, I was more assured. Finally, at the completion mark, I'm happy to see that I'm right. Looking forward to what we'll see next!
5/5 rating, obviously
(I received an ARC through Second Sky and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review)
This is another brilliant installment of the Legends of The Shadows series, back with Locan A’Shadow and Cetrik.
Locan’s survival relies on Cetrik and his skills in rescuing him before he is auctioned off to the highest bidder, but not all of Cetrik’s allies can be trusted and the duo find themselves in another precarious situation with the fate of the dominion in their hands!
The family dynamics between Cetrik and his sister I found really interesting in this book and the very rare occurrence on Locan’s soft side for the woman he loved. Of course the epic battles steal the show, with new levels of trickery and a host of new enemies to slay. I can’t get enough of Locan and Cetrik’s bickering, at times I really feel like they should be two grumpy old men 🤣
This book had some fantastic twists and has certainly finished with opportunities for future storylines and books which will keep us in the lives of Cetrik and Locan. I really want Morvolt as a pet his sass is brilliant and the animal side kick you want when heading into battle!
I LOVED the use of imagery to trick people thoughts in this book torturing them with life like visions design to inflict deep fear!
The reason I have marked this 4.5 stars not 5 is purely as I loved The Assassins Shadow slightly more than this book. But honestly all three books in this series so far have been gripping and enjoyable and I can’t wait for more!
If you are a fan of epic fantasy and you haven’t read these books you need to as they are everything you want in an epic fantasy!
I dived straight into this third book in a series, it sounded too good to pass up and I was right. If you love epic fantasy with battles, magic and a quest then this is a book for you. Told from the point of view of Cetrik, a prince from a distant land on a search for adventure, his path crossed in earlier books with Local A’Shadow, an assassin who’s magic uses shadows to move around. Local has been captured and Cetrik is hellbent on rescuing him despite the enchanted prison he is held in, being utterly outnumbered and completely alone. His determination throughout this book really shone through, his moral compass to do right by his friend for having saved his life previously guides his future plans.
Locan was a really interesting and morally ambiguous character and I would love to know more about him.
The writing was vivid, the battle scenes jumped from the pages, full of details and grit they have you on the edge of your seat. Particularly those with the barbarian hordes.
As a foray into a purely epic fantasy it made a great change from my usual reading. I'm interested to see where things go in book 4.
This is book three in the Legends Of The Shadow series and in my humble opinion It’s the best so far. I had high hopes and was not disappointed at all. We join Cetrik who is travelling to Rameon, the capital of the Dominion Empire. His friend, and assassin, Locan A’Shadow has been kidnapped by raiders so this is a rescue mission against seemingly insurmountable odds. I love this book!
Cetrick is a great character; fiercely loyal yet morally ambiguous. He is determined to save his friend, partly in return for the way Locan saved his life previously. The way he has been written by the author shows the skilful way his character has developed over the three books.
The battle scenes were so descriptive that I found it easy to envision the conflict. They were gritty, gory and full of detail.
Overall, this is my favourite in the series which I am happy to recommend to all fantasy readers with the caveat that you need to read the series in order to appreciate the context and backstory. I gave The Assassin’s War, by R. S. Moule, five stars and can’t wait to devour book four.
As I already wrote, this is one of those series that should be much more popular, because it is one of the best epic fantasy series running right now. Locan and Cedrik are back in a new addition to the saga. The author adds grimdark elements, expands the world with new details, delivers breathtaking battles, and gives the main characters even more depth, making them feel fully fleshed out. If this is not enough, there is also strong storytelling, intriguing family dynamics, and a touch of dark humour. It can be read as a stand alone because there is plenty of backstory, but I would still suggest starting from the first book to enjoy the full development of the story. Have fun, enjoy it. Many thanks for this digital copy, all opinions are mine.
Rameon Dominion is a dying world full of corruption, wealth disparity and war. Here, our hero Locan is stuck imprisoned. It will up to Cetrik to save Locan from the barbarian Emperor. These two men will fight for their lives in a show down filled with lots of excitement, twists and skill!
What an epic read! This series gets better with each new book. I was so excited to read this installment and I think it is the best so far. The world bulding is phenomenal and our main characters know how to bring action, wit and epic battles to our story. Highly recommend! Thank you Netgalley and Second Sky for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.
I've read all six of Roger Moule's books now, devoured each one. This one, I confess, I got a bit bored mid-book with the battle scenes, but the latter 50% of the book I read in one sitting. Couldn't put it down. And very excited to see there's a 4th in the series.
It's quite difficult to review this without giving spoilers, as there's a twist and an unexpected turn every few pages.
As usual, Mr Moule amazes me with his imagination and story telling. The character building is so good, that I feel I know the main characters personally at times.
Thoroughly recommend. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC.
It seems Prince Cetrik and assassin Lorcan A’Shadow cannot go 5 minutes without ending up captured, preparing for a war or making unwanted deals. We start our tale with Locan being captured and taken to Rameon while Cetrik races after him to rescue him. It all goes a bit tits up though, which is standard for this unlucky duo. Plague is spreading through the land, raiders are getting closer by the day, Locan is due to be auctioned off as a slave and is kept in a notorious prison that not even he can escape from. With the help of locals and his sister, Cetrik will rescue Locan, there’s no other option, both as his friend and hero, he’s needed to save the city that has treated them both so harshly. A recurring issue, the rulers and government are corrupt and useless, but when Locan magic of shadows is ripped from him along with his true love, he must make a devastating deal that even he isn’t sure he can fulfil. The city is in danger of falling, the people are unprepared and untrained, and without his shadows Locan is just a retired assassin, an old man in this game of war and magic.
Another great addition to the series! It was another story with high stakes that kept me captivated the whole way. I really liked how Cetrik was without Locan at the beginning as I think it developed his character even more and let him shine on his own. I also appreciated the further world building throughout this book!
The second half of the book was true to the series, where Locan and Cetrik really can’t catch a break. And the ending sequence!! Makes me excited for what’s to come in the next book.
The series continues to be a very good dark epic fantasy!
Thank you to Netgalley and Second Sky for the ARC!
Cetrik is travelling to Rameon, the capital of the Dominion empire to rescue his friend Locan A’Shadow who was kidnapped by raiders. Locan is trapped deep in the notorious prison as the city is on the brink of disaster and will be attacked. Cetrik must find him and get him out against all the odds, but it seems an impossible task.
Very well written and exciting novel with excellent characters. Book three of the Legends of Shadows series. Locan will lose his power to use shadows and must face more than one powerful enemies. This is a tense novel of adventure and friendship. Highly recommend.
Wow that last 40% or so packed a blinking punch and loved it. This series is seriously one 9f my favourites, i LOVE this epic fantasy full of adventure, a coming of age story at the beginning and a tale of friendship, banter and the ale soaked grumblings of a retired assassin lol
I highly recommend this series, I've loved every book so far. This was a little slow at first but it soon picked up.
Seriously you all need to pick up this series, it's so underrated it hurts my soul.
Thank you to second sky, net galley and the author
I enjoyed this book a lot more than the last book and it was very much a return to form. The pacing was good, there were some twists and turns, but the outcome was as you would expect (no spoilers!), if a little sudden.
This book put the larger story arc back on track, with hints of a lot more intrigue at play.
Definitely worth a read and suggests there could be an interesting story arc to be revealed.
"The Dominion didn’t build prisons to hold men. It built them to break legends."
Throwing you headfirst into political intrigue, vicious power plays, and brutal, relentless action, The Assassin’s War feels cinematic in scope. But it was the hearts of the characters that kept my pages turning in this third book of the Legends of the Shadow series.
Cetrik’s desperate mission to free Locan from the heart of Rameon creates constant tension, and the city itself is brilliantly realised. It's decadent, dangerous, and rotting beneath its beauty. While Locan remains an almost mythical figure throughout much of the story, his presence looms over every chapter, and the anticipation surrounding him works extremely well.
The pacing barely lets you breathe, the action sequences are razor-sharp, and Moule balances large-scale warfare with intimate betrayals beautifully.
Verdict: Perfect for readers who love grimy epic fantasy with assassins, morally grey characters, and cities dripping in corruption.
R.S. Moule’s The Assassin’s War is the third instalment in the Legends of the Shadow series. It is a fast‑paced, richly layered fantasy that blends high‑stakes adventure with sharp emotional depth. The story follows Cetrik, racing to rescue his captured companion Locan A’Shadow, the world’s most feared assassin, from the labyrinthine city of Rameon, capital of the Dominion empire. The plot moves with cinematic urgency with ambushes, betrayals, and political manoeuvring unfolding against a backdrop of war and magic.
The book is a thrilling, character‑driven fantasy full of danger, loyalty, and political intrigue. Highly recommend for any fan of Abercrombie, Gwynne, and Lynch as they will feel right at home.
