Edgar Bryce thought his war was over. Then he heard the signal.
Once a decorated soldier, Bryce now roams the stars as a freelance prospector, trading danger for solitude. The battles may be behind him, but peace has never come easy. He’s drifting until a strange signal pulls him off course.
A hidden transmission. A plea for help. A distress call from human prisoners long thought lost.
The authorities won’t act. Peace is too fragile. Diplomats would rather look away. But Bryce remembers what it means to wear the uniform and the unspoken vow that comes with it.
He’ll have to do the form a team, cross the border, and bring them home.
Because some promises don’t expire. And some missions… choose you.

This series is about a future where humans have spread out into space and survived a war with an alien race who have never lost a war before. Several years after a veteran got a message from a POW who had been listed as MIA with a list of other MIA who were being used as slave labor, all had their status changed to killed in action not long before he looked into it. Is someone helping the aliens keep those prisoners against the treaty or did they really not know? Good Read.b
I struggled with this set...the first few books were detail and inner thought heavy...didn't think I would be able to get through the whole set! But it's a strange one...once you get through the beginning things kick off and the action comes thick and fast. There are still this internal thoughts but they help understand the characters and their actions...and a lot of the early stuff makes more sense!! If you enjoy military action with aliens and space thrown in, this is definitely a read you'll enjoy.
In theory I should have six books added to my list not one but I could not be bothered reviewing them individually. I was not impressed with this series, I had expected better from John. After freeing the POW's it was just a series of problems they had to overcome and after getting through them it was the endgame in the last book. It all read like a video game and the ending was a bit of an anticlimax.
A concept to be admired meant this series pulled you in by title alone. Then the author wrote a brilliant series to match the title. Believable and worthy characters, some flawed, but each adding to a heart warming story that moved along at a great pace. Hard to put down, even harder to realise I've finished, and a struggle to accept that I must leave this universe behind. Excellent series, thank you.
The overall story is pretty convoluted .. The action is intense with a lot of self reflection inbetween. Too many characters and storylines .. so much so that you needed 6 books ! This is not a series as such .. rather each book is a chapter not to be skipped although I did skip through a lot of the self reflection morals of military hit squads and undefined PTSD traits.
If I had bought these as individual books rather than the boxed set I'd most likely have stopped by book 2, but definitely by 3 There's plenty of action and intrigue, but. A lot of it is just side stories with only a passing relevance to the main story The characters are quite strong and even the weak ones build up towards the end, mainly Paul and Chelsea, some decent characters e.g. Vin Overall ok, but with reservations on my part
Being positive about this series I liked the theme, various plots and characters BUT I dont think I’ve read a book, let alone a series, with so many grammatical errors, missed words, different words ie. ‘the projectile weapon flew passed my HEAR’. The problems exist on almost every page, sometimes changing the whole meaning of the sentence. If it was an AI proof reader it must stand for Absolute Idiot. Overall it spoilt a good read.
John Walker is the best space related Sci-Fi novels that I’ve come across. His plots always grab you from the start. He uses multiple characters that are fully developed. And these characters each have a voice as they help tell the story. The scene settings are decent; but I could always use more. Enjoy!
Good continous plots. All characters well interwined. Good mix of wild west type stories with believable future technology. Looking forward to deciding Walkers next series to take a stab at. Much prefer hit adventures, style of writing than many of the others out there who tend to become monotonous.
This series was captivating from the beginning and laster until the end of the epilog! Yeah, there were a few edits missed along the way, but the story and the details that mirrored present day special ops made up for it by far.
If you want something to read without much effort then this okay. Personally I got fed up with reporting spelling and grammar mistakes and gave up doing it by book 3. A decent editor would be a great investment.
This is classic space opera. The different elements and plot lines are well executed. The characters are well defined and get you involved with the story.
