Heartbroken, and reeling from the events of the Solstice Eve ball, Ashton Blake flees North to a safehouse where she is told she will be reunited with her ailing father. However, once arriving at the inn, she quickly discovers that the location she was given isn’t a final destination, but a stop on a vast underground network utilized to get people like her away from those who would try to harm or even capture her.
With no powers and nowhere else to go, Ashton reluctantly puts her trust in a stranger, Beckett Astor, who is assigned to take her to the next stop. Her escort is as reluctant to give her answers as she is to follow him, and she begins to wonder if she is merely being guided to a safehouse or being led to the clutches of a new enemy.
Will she find the answers she so desperately seeks or has she traded one dangerous deal for another?
This is the second installment of The Lonely Kingdom Chronicles and perfect for fans ◆ The banter in Irresistable Urge to Fall for Your Enemy ◆ World Building of Throne of Glass ◆ Political intrigue of Divergent ◆ General angst, pining, and a dash of insta-dislike versus insta-love.
Kathryn Oscar is a self appointed “recovering engineer” who decided to spend time utilizing a different part of her brain to write fantasy stories in her bedroom. She lives on the coast of North Carolina with her husband and three kids—if you count the cat, which everyone including the cat, does.
When she’s not writing, Kathryn can be found reading, training for RunDisney races, curating playlists for books she hasn’t written, plotting books she will never have time to write, and taking care of her feral boys.
This is the sequel of The Lonely Kingdom, and it picks up right where we left off from in book 1. Ashton travels to a safe house to escape the dangers that lurk within Biltons Academy and finds herself thrust into a whole new world. She finds an unlikely companionship forming with her escort, Beckett Astor, but what happens when she finds herself drawn to him as more than just a friend? And how will she handle all the new twists and turns and information she uncovers? I guess you’ll just have to read it to find out 😉
Ashton continues to be a badass in this book, and she surprised me with how well she adjusts to everything that happens. Despite her anxiety and trauma, she has a perseverance that is truly inspiring. Her character development in this book is fantastic!
While several characters from book 1 are present in this one as well, including one of my favorites (Ryana), a lot of new characters are introduced. So now we come to Beckett… Where do I even start with him?! He’s snarky and smug, and the banter between him and Ashton is DELICIOUS. He definitely took over the spot for my favorite character 😏 Let’s just say that there is way more to him than meets the eye. And if you thought the last book did slow burn well, this one did it even better!! The tension was palpable to say the least 😮💨
The expanded world building is really great! We get some more history and lore introduced which is always fun to read! Some questions from book 1 are answered, but plenty more are posed and leave you wondering about what will happen next by the end. Sometimes, sequels feel like they drag on, but this one does not fall into that category for me. As much as I loved The Lonely Kingdom, I loved The Queen’s Heir even more!!
The ending though??? Jail. Straight to jail for that one. I have so much anxiety about what’s going to happen next!!
After all the terrible drama that happened at Bilton's, Ash is forced to flee for her life. Everything is wrong and different and she learns so much about her world that is shocking to her.
Helping her flee is smirking, sarcastic, flirting Beckett. We love Beckett. This books comes with so many new twists and turns- and I can't say much without spoiling it all!
This book is filled with a great E2L type story with such great yearning, and all the great things like only having one bed, sharing a horse, washing her hair - an arranged marriage! I can't wait for the third, can't recommend this series more.
Once again, I find myself rating my own book 5 stars because I believe in it and I love it. My hope is that The Queen's Heir exceeded everyone's expectations for where the story might go and surprised you along the way. If you thought I was going to be working on the FMC's trust issues, I am so sorry to disappoint. Know that I had the most fun writing this one though. Xo, KO.
4.5. It was a little too long, but the storyline was amazing. I cannot wait for the third book. The ending of this book wasnt anything that expected. I'm absolutely obsessed with this series and will be adding two physical copies to my home library! I've recommended this series to my bookclub and all my friends!
Oooooh so good! It isn’t often that the second book is as good, if not better, than the first! KO knocked this one out of the park! I did NOT expect that ending!
Such a great book with unexpected twists and turns. Kathryn has you on the edge of your seat with this book, leaves you questioning everything and begging for book 3!!
Really enjoyed this 2nd book and the character/relationship developments. The betrayal and twists were unexpected and I prefer the unpredictable. Had me hooked from beginning to end. I can’t wait for book 3 on 4/7/26.
