A siren steals a warrior’s heart—and maybe his soul—in this dangerously seductive Highlander romance from USA Today bestselling author Heather McCollum.
Cyrus Mackinnon has always had a way with the lasses. But beneath his roguish grin lies the heart of a warrior—and a destiny to be the chief of his clan. By wedding his sister to the Macqueen chief, he’s forged a strong alliance among the Isle of Skye clans. Until a lovely stranger with eyes the color of the sea disrupts the celebrations to warn Cyrus that his brother-in-law is on par with the devil himself…
Laria Macqueen knows that none of the clans of Skye are safe from her cousin’s sinister plotting—least of all her people. And if she can’t stop the wedding, she’ll have to do the seduce Cyrus…and kill him. But while bedding the battle-hardened warrior is altogether satisfying, she hesitates once she has her dagger to his throat.
Now Cyrus is caught in the Macqueens’ secret war of attrition. With one wrong move, the fragile alliance will be shattered and Skye soaked in blood. And in the middle stands Laria, a siren who will either steal Cyrus’s soul…or lure them all to their deaths.
Each book in the Brotherhood of Solway Moss series is * The Highlander’s Wild Flame * The Highlander's Fallen Angel * The Highlander's Lady of Loch and Sea
I am Heather McCollum, writer of 16th and 17th century Scottish romance full of adventure and intrigue, sprinkled with humor, history, and spice. Brawny Highlanders and feisty heroines are my favorite characters!
I am also a mom of three kids, dog-mom of one rescued geriatric golden retriever, and wife of one 6 foot 4 inch Highlander. When I’m not trying to help my kids make it through the day, baking things I see on The Great British Baking Show, or writing, I’m usually educating women on ovarian cancer (I’m a nine-year survivor).
I love kilted heroes, chai lattes, and eating buttered air-popped popcorn for dinner on Friday nights (my dog loves this one too).

Book review: Heather McCollum’s The Highlander’s Lady of Loch and Sea. Published by Entangled: Amara, with sincere thanks to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for my gifted ARC.
There is a particular kind of comfort that comes from opening a Heather McCollum novel, and this third installment in the Brotherhood of Solway Moss series delivers that feeling in full. From the opening pages, I was pulled back into the rugged beauty of the Isle of Skye, where clan loyalties are fragile, danger is constant, and love is never simple. This book feels rich and layered, combining political tension, emotional vulnerability, and a romance that simmers before it truly burns.
Cyrus Mackinnon has always struck me as the charmer of the group, but here we see how much weight he actually carries. He’s a warrior trying to do right by his clan, his sister, and the future of Skye, even when every choice threatens to unravel the peace he’s working toward. Laria Macqueen is the kind of heroine I love most: capable, guarded, and deeply loyal to the people who depend on her. Her scars, both seen and unseen, shape her strength rather than diminish it, and I appreciated how the story never treats her as someone who needs saving. When Cyrus and Laria collide, the attraction is immediate, but trust is anything but easy, and that tension kept me fully invested.
What stood out most to me was how much heart this story has. Beneath the sword fights, betrayals, and shifting alliances, there’s a steady focus on acceptance and worth. McCollum gives space to characters who are considered flawed or unwanted by society and quietly reminds the reader that survival itself is a kind of victory. One quote that truly stuck with me was, “Scars merely show that ye’ve battled against something fierce and survived.” That line perfectly sums up the emotional core of this book.
While The Highlander’s Lady of Loch and Sea is labeled as a standalone, I do think readers who have read the previous books will feel a deeper connection to the characters and ongoing conflicts. There is a lot happening, and the world feels lived-in and complex. That said, the central romance between Cyrus and Laria stands firmly on its own, and their journey toward trust and love is satisfying and well earned.
The pacing balances action and intimacy nicely, with moments of danger offset by quieter scenes that allow the characters to breathe and grow. I also loved seeing familiar faces from earlier books and catching glimpses of their happily ever afters. It made the story feel warm and cohesive, like returning to a place you know well.
Overall, this was a cozy yet intense Highlander romance that reminded me why I enjoy this genre so much. If you’re looking for a historical romance filled with strong characters, found family, emotional depth, and a swoon-worthy Scottish warrior, this book is well worth your time.
This is book 3 and it can be read as a standalone but I have not read the first two books and in this case I think it would have been beneficial to have read them. There are so many characters and I could not keep them all straight. I thought this would just be a typical, short historical romance, but this one had so many things going on. Cyrus has just married off his sister to a man he thinks is a good man and can unite the clans, but someone leaves a message at the wedding warning that the man Grace is marrying is not a good man. Cyrus needs to get to the bottom of this. He discovers Laria is the one who left the message and she has a band of misfits in the forest with people exiled due to physical and mental ailments. They are not welcomed in the town because of the new chief, Cyrus's new brother-in-law. He is drawn to Laria but he needs to figure out who is telling the truth. Laria does not know how much she can trust Cyrus, so they both have trust issues with each other. I did enjoy the book and I haven't read a good highlander novel in a while and the cover is great!
-"If women can have more say in things, there will be more peace."
-"Scars merely show that ye've battled against something fierce and survived, that ye were stronger than the attack to yer body."
-"And differences on the outside don't affect a person's blood or heart."
5 Stars! Yet again, Heather McCollum has written another fantastic book in the ‘Brotherhood of Solway Moss’ series. I really love this series and I wish I could write as well as Heather does. Anything she writes is a must read for me. The previous 2 books in this series were also 5 stars for me and while I’m a little foggy on some details from those books, since I read them about a year ago, I love how the author jogs my memory, giving just enough for me to remember main parts. I really want to reread this series in order, one after the other. But now I have to wait for the 4th book! This is why I prefer single books over a series, since I have very little patience. How will it end?! Tell me now! Haha. But I do love seeing past main characters in other books in the series, it’s like an extra epilogue! The main characters in this one are Cyrus and Laria and I loved them both. As someone with many, many scars and less than perfect health, I felt for Laria, even though, yes, she’s fictional. This series has a lot of action, some sweat inducing sexy time scenes, conniving, lying, secrets, fighting, a kind old granny, mystery, betrayal, kidnapping, murder, death, love, happiness, an HEA ending and wrapped up with a gorgeous, buff, mouth watering cover! I 1000% recommend this series but would say start at the beginning as I feel it would be best read in order. You seriously won’t be disappointed. Just trust me on this. You’re welcome! *I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.*
This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. This was my first book by this author so I was a bit confused because I didn't know the characters or events from previous books in the series but you don't need to know them to understand the plot of this book. The story is told from two POVs.
Laria Macqueen, brave and intelligent cousin of Chief Iain Macqueen. She tries to stop her cousin's sinister plans. She is willing to sacrifice everything to expose his atrocities, even her own happiness and life.
Cyrus Mackinnon, future chief of clan Mackinnon, ran away with his friends from the Carlisle dungeon and wants to unite all of Scotland to stop the English invasion. After being compared to his deceased older brother for all his life, Cyrus's only goal is to make alliances and strengthening his clan. His plans change after meeting Laria.
They both have to decide what is more important, happiness or their clans.
Both characters were well fleshed out and easy to root for. Although there was some miscommunication, it didn't lead to much unnecessary drama. I liked that Cyrus didn't try to impose his will on Laria and listened to what she had to say. The writing and pacing was good. The romance and action parts were well balanced.
Overall, it is a book for those who love both romance and fast paced action. I really liked the story and will definitely read more books of this author.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGally for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is classed as a standalone, but in my opinion, I'm not sure that's a good idea. I've read all three books, and I feel that if I'd only read this book (book 3), I'd be missing some valuable information. There are little details we're reminded of, but reading them all, gives you a better grasp of all the players. This book is about Cryus Mackinnon, one of four Scottish soldiers that were imprisoned by King Henry. The four men bonded during their time in prison and after escaping, decided they'd had enough of the clans fighting each other instead of focusing on the real threat, England. Cryus is the charmer of the group. He's usually very good with the ladies. He's also confident, strong, loyal, and compassionate. When Laria Macqueen walks into his life, he starts second guessing himself. Laria is clever, determined, caring, and a protector of those she loves. As the story progresses, we see each of them struggle with the limitations and expectations that have been placed upon them. While trying to figure out where the truth lies, mysteries begin to unravel and a few twists throw them off track. The side characters are entertaining and had me laughing out loud. I'm very interested to see what happens when we finally get Asher MacNicol's story and the final piece to the puzzle.
3.5 stars This is book 3 in the Brotherhood of Solway Moss series, but indicates it can be read stand alone.
This is a Scottish Highlander romance. Cyrus Mackinnon is working to unify the Isle of Skye clans. His sister Grace is marrying the chief of the Macqueens to aid this quest. Laria Macqueen is trying to stop this union. She has secrets to share about the Macqueen chief but not anyone to believe her. She is tasked with murdering Cyrus by the clan chief but can’t follow through after their night of passion. Cyrus and Laria eventually work together to make the truth known and unify the clans. Out of passion is born love as Cyrus and Laria continue to be drawn together.
Overall I enjoyed the story and the characters. Laria is a heroine, working for her people. Cyrus is strong and brave but also gentle and caring. I really liked them both. A lot of side characters and some good banter that was often humorous with Cy’s “brothers”.
In my opinion the reader would be best served to have read the first books in the series before reading this instalment. There is a lot going on in this book that stems from events in the previous books and a lot of characters to keep track of. This is the reason for the lower rating.
I would recommend this one, especially if you are looking for a good highlander romance.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for this gifted copy.
Book 3 in a series, THLoL&C (a mouthful of a title) is a lovely addition. Full disclosure, I missed book 2, but I did like 1. Be aware that although it's billed as being standalone-able, there is an overarching storyline and repeat characters (aside from the main ones) who appear throughout. The romance part, though, does stand alone.
Cy is a charming hero, the Romeo of the group of four Highlanders who survived a British prison together. It's always fun when the flirts fall, though it tends to bug me a bit about how previous partners (in historical and contemporary tales) are dismissed as worth nothing better that a quick tup.
As heroines go, Laria is great; she's strong, loyal, and resourceful. Her dedication to those shunned by the chief is admirable and totally correct. The part about the villain thoroughly rejecting anyone with a perceived imperfection is a little broad to make sense, but if you're willing to suspend your disbelief, it works.
Overall, it was a really good story, and I'm looking forward to reading Ash's tale next.
I find myself still thoroughly enjoying this series, and this tale of finding love is no exception. Cyrus has been a tad…surly? Yeah, surly at times, but he’s pretty sure his sister is about to wed a good man. But then mishaps happen, a warning is given, and he begins to question. Is his mystery woman telling the truth, or is she as mad as others wish to claim she is?
As frustrated as I was with the occasional lack of communication between Cyrus and Laria, I had to like the faith they had in each other. One had a little more at first, but it’s understandable. And oddly, the one who had more faith is the one who should’ve been more wary. But these two find their way. They figure out the true danger in time, the root of it, and manage to save both each other and themselves while setting things right.
Just when all appears to be okay, though, I think we have another surprise on the horizon. And I can’t wait to find out where it takes us next….
A Complex Terrifying Segment of a Wonderful Highland Story: After reading the first 2 books I am captured with the series and my review focus is on Cyrus the third man of the group of four that escaped King Henrys prison and is trying to bring the clans together to save the isle and their homes and live in peace. The story is quite complex with several new characters. We follow Cyrus who is attracted to Laira and enjoys her kisses, yet he wants more from her but does she? The story has an in-depth heartfelt feeling to it where there is also a lot of suffering, struggling, and strife before things start to fall into place and lead Cyrus and Laira to a happy ending. It looks like the fourth warrior Asher will complete the series with his story which I am certainly looking forward to. Any of the books can be read as a standalone.
Trust and alliances for peace can be a tricky thing with the Scottish clans. Marriages between clans to form alliances don’t always go as planned. Cyrus discovers this when he marries his sister Grace off to Iain and is nearly killed by a mysterious woman attending the post wedding celebrations. There’s something about that lass that he can’t shake. Upon discovering that “the lass” is his new brother in law’s cousin Laria he learns that imperfections can have deadly and dire consequences as far as Iain is concerned. Cyrus continues to be drawn to Laria, but circumstances seem to bring them together only to pull them apart. Only when Cyrus’s father is poisoned does he learn that Iain has been playing the long game for clan power for quite awhile. Cyrus must cleverly outwit and out maneuver Iain if he’s to survive and marry Laria who he’s fallen in love with.
While I still a four star read, I didn't like the second book in this series as much as the first so I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book. But it turns out my caution was completely unnecessary because I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It has all of the elements that I want in a Heather McCollum series. There is action and adventure mixed in with love and romance, along with found family and sword fighting. There is also an otter, some twists and turns, poison, betrayal, and the return of a familiar villain.
I really liked this book and can't wait for the next one!
I enjoyed Heather McCollum's latest highlander romance about Laria, a lady on the run who won't leave her people behind and Cyrus, a Scottish highlander who is trying to do right by his clan, his sister, and a woman he finds himself wanting to know more about. Right off the bat, Laria is presented as a woman of many talents with water and archery featured in the first chapter. Seduction is another skill of hers, and we get a spicy scene early in the book. Laria's evil cousin portrays her as a dangerous liar. Despite their immediate chemistry, Cyrus is struggling to figure out who to believe and has to figure out if he can sacrifice his family responsbilities for the woman he is falling for.
I really enjoy Heather’s writing. The dialogue is well crafted, the backdrop of the Isle of Skye for this series is perfectly selected, and the clan chiefs are hot—a fabulous combination.
I particularly appreciated that in the story I truly couldn’t tell who was telling the truth, who is in the right, and who the real villain was. There were so many will they/won’t they moments with different elements of the story and it kept me engaged the whole time.
Another note—you are perfect. Your scars, your specialities, your quirks are what make you, YOU. Never forget that.
Tense, romantic, exciting, and sweet. This was a complex story with fully formed side characters. The story is very tense, the FMC is in constant danger for her cousin who exiled her. It made me nervous, and I was really rooting for the MMC and her to figure it all out. At one point, I did wonder if there was a happily ever after for the two. Don’t worry, McCollum knows the job. The ending was so romantic and tied up loose ends. It does get a bit dark at times, so check the trigger warnings in the beginning.
The Highlander’s Lady of Loch and Sea Series: Brotherhood of Solway Moss #3 Author: Heather McCollum Publisher: Entangled: Amara Another special thanks to NetGallery ⭐️⭐️⭐️ As book 3 in a series, Cyrus and Laria's story can technically be read as a standalone, but I am so thankful I have read books 1 and 2, because it gives it so much more depth. This book had so much going on, that sometimes it was difficult to keep track, but overall another great read. Thank you so much for the amazing opportunity to read an e-arc Entangled Publishings and NetGallery.
This highlander romance is part of a series involving four warriors who escaped from an English dungeon, and are now trying to bring the Scottish Clans together in peace. The easiest way to make a peace alliance is with marriage. Unfortunately that can be complicated. Enemies will get in the way and even sometimes, family. This is an action packed story with brave and unusual characters. I have read and enjoyed all the books in this series so far and can't wait to read the next one. Great fun.
The Highlander’s Lady of Loch and Sea was a fast, fun read with everything I want in a Highland romance: a rugged setting, simmering tension, and two leads who actually make me want them to end up together. The Isle of Skye backdrop adds great atmosphere, and there’s just enough danger and intrigue to keep the pages turning.
Heather McCollum continues to be a dependable author and I look forward to whatever she does next!
If you love a Scottish, plaid wearing man who loves his family and protects his woman with everything he is you must read this book! Laria is a tough, loving care giver that wants to protect her people abd Cyrus is a man who wants peace and to stop England from taking his isle. When th3y join forces love grows and an unstoppable duo is formed.
Cyrus and Laria are the perfect addition to this series! Laria is brave, strong, and capable and isn't afraid to fight for what she loves. Laria and Cyrus make a great team to overcome the adversity in their lives. I can't wait for the last book to come out! Thank you to Edelweiss+ for the advanced review copy.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book when I started it but I admit to being pleasantly surprised. The book had lots of great twists and turns that really kept me engaged so I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen. I am going to need to find the other books in this series so I can see what else happens for the characters. Definitely a fun read
oh my this one is just as good as the others!!!!!!! the spice, the action, the mystery its just wonderful!!!! I love the other two i read. thank you for the arc Entangled!!!! the character development is spot on and the world the author creates is just awrsome it makes you imagine living in a time like the story is based around its phenomenal 👏 must read.
I loved this book! The slow burn romance and finding love through peril kept me reading. I liked that I didn't have to read the first two books to enjoy this one also.
cute romcom with some fantastic vibes. the thrilling war aspect worked well and the antag, though generic, was serviceable. 4.5, rounded up. tysm for the arc.
Oh my gosh what an amazing read, I was questioning the villain til the end!! The love story was very relatable, I loved how the author made this so much more than just a romance truly a story of self love and overcoming obstacles!
