You pick up a book that promises smut in the first few pages, but then it morphs into a forced perspective on aging, middle-aged sex and dating, kinks, and preferences... dare I say this book wasn't what was promised, but I did find the messaging resonant.

Quickly read through a novella in a quiet corner of Avenida booth last MIBF, felt like I was thrusted into the quickie I never intended to take. Malayo sa sensibilidad kong straight and had a very hard-and-fast rule of dating in my MiCR / Chikka years. Sensual, yes, but more catered to the LGBTQ+.

After that poetic thryst, I ended up not buying the book, letting the others (interested to it) instead. Patawad po sa unrealized gain of the market value of Eskinita copy hehehuhuz

This was my first local read.

I bought this book at the MIBF yesterday, as I was intrigued by its cover (yes, i judged a book by its cover, so what). It looked to me like it was a horror, if you look at the cover and such, and I even got mines signed.

This was not a horror. It's smut.

-_-

Chuckberry was nice though, I loved his aura. But maybe this one just didn't hit, I guess.

i like the musings on sex, age, and beauty. sa logline akala ko may mga mas exciting pa na mangyayari pero tama lang naman yung naging tone kasi yun naman ang character. sana mas mahaba pa kasi gusto ko rin malaman ano pang maeexplore niya sa sexuality niya at that age pero enjoy na enjoy ko naman ang pagbabasa, wala lang masyadong bagong ideas. di ko naabutan yung author sa mibf sayang

Chuckberry J. Pascual’s novella Daddy reminded me of Garth Greenwell’s works, particularly Cleanness, in the way both used sex as a tool to dive deeper into one’s self and identity. Both authors understood that sex is more than just the physical communication of people, but also, and more importantly, the mental and emotional connections; one bares all during sex. Through his insecure middle-aged protagonist Ryan, Pascual explored the anxieties of growing old, but also its virtues that could only be discovered when that certain age was reached. It was stunning how Pascual created a fully realized and compelling character in under 100 pages. Even more so was how this was written: graceful, assured, confident. The novella was filled with explicit descriptions of gay sex, but what excited and tittilated me more was Pascual’s brilliant plotting and writing of Ryan’s great transformation. The more I think about it, the more I love how it was done and how it surprised me. What an experience.

It's a little difficult not to see something instructive in this gripping narrative. I told a special someone that it's almost like "listening to a future version of ourselves."

At the outset, the book sounds like smut. It actually opens as one. But what distinguishes this book from pure escapism is the narrator's refusal for his narrative to be completely drowned by the call of the flesh. Because this said flesh also has to contend with time and the unglamorous realities of familial responsibilities and the blunt fact of aging. This isn't to say that Ryan, our protagonist, is completely jaded. He occasionally tips to being jaded, but only in ways that--I assume--any person of his background tends to be.

What makes him almost heroic to my eyes is his refusal to descend into nihilism, to give up on love simply because his view of himself is clouded by his immediate realities. There is a pivotal conversation with/monologue by his best friend Marvs (p.27) which I think provides our hero the perspective he needs to change his view of love, beauty, and personhood. That, I believe, is the core of this book [I won't quote as this is a very short work and it's best to experience this one as I did, perhaps in one sitting].

Lately, I've been reading Mary Oliver's poetry compendium, "Devotions," and "Daddy's" ending reminds me of how Oliver's poems usually begin/end with the persona's acknowledgment of the many forms of love and the divine that the world offers. I am deeply happy with the novella's ending as it echoes what I have learned from the latter's poetry: the courage to seek and to embrace the form of love we happen upon around us.

As someone who has encountered the complicated world Ryan was just beginning to navigate by the end of the book, I am happy to see how he is opening up to new experiences, to changing some parts of himself, and to being more willing, despite the risks and the ever-changing conventions of the world where he moves. By the time the smut-adjacent parts return in the last few pages, there is the sense that this overabundance of clarity and details--however graphic and daring they are--becomes almost a necessary counterpoint to the furtive and hesitant nature of his initial encounter at the book's opening.

I've read some reviews stating how they find it challenging to connect to our hero's experiences. But as someone who in some ways has been in Ryan's situation, there is an undeniable sense of familiarity and almost prophetic instruction in the end. It's as if the book is saying: your body, the way it sees beauty, and the way it gives and receives love, will always be in a state of flux. Whether you name these violent changes "decay" or "evolution" will always be up to you--whether you are the "baby" or "daddy" in your relationship/s.

In short: basahin niyo na, mga daddy, and lovers of daddies!

I really love how the characters feel so real, like they could easily exist in my everyday life.

The story captures everything from everyday conversations with friends to life struggles, self-doubt, and all the what-ifs, as well as themes of aging, dating, and even sexual desire.

It makes me wonder, as a gay person, na wala pang trenta, who what kind of “daddy” will I be in the future. Am I going to be Mike, Ryan, Marvin, or Jonathan?

Daddy by Chuckberry Pascual is published by Avenida Press under their imprint eskinita, which based on the titles under it, so far, is meant for more experimental but shorter books. Daddy’s 56 pages provides a self-contained story about narrator Ryan, a 44 year-old who, after a brief sexual encounter with a much younger man, contemplates his age vis-a-vis sex and beauty and desirability. What surprised me, despite the reviews already saying so, is how much substance, much though Ryan’s introspections, is packed in the slim booklet aided by effective storytelling by the author.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 / 5

From the title itself, I had a hunch of what the story might be about, but it turned out to be more layered than expected. Beyond the spicy scenes, this novella is thought-provoking, raising questions about identity, intimacy, and the realities of adulthood.

What resonated with me most is how it touches on work, choices, and the struggle of finding balance in life.

Daddy may be short, but it lingers long after you close the last page. It’s not just about desire, but also about choices, sacrifices, and the weight of loneliness that creeps in with time. A read that’s as intimate as it is unsettling.

“Kailangan ko bang magkajowa para sumaya?”

Loneliness through the lens of frivolity, as Sir Chuckberry Pascual splendidly manages to do with his entertaining fiction. Aside from the amusing storytelling, what’s very well appreciated from this work is its openness to the current queer experience while refusing to render previous experiences obsolete. The equivalent of eyeball is hookup, the equivalent of VHS is X (Twitter) porn. Although I’m an acespec, it didn’t get in the way of my enjoying this unapologetic smut.

Mas mataas din daw ang rate ng relationship ng girl to girl vs man to man.

In one of my previous posts in FB, when I got my hands on Chuckberry’s book, I joked that I had finally received "Kapag Umaatake ang Daddy" Blame it on timing, I happened to get Darwin’s "Kapag Umaatake ang Dilim" at the same time, so I infused the titles. Except, turns out it wasn’t just a joke. Because, friends, Daddy here, does attack — emotionally, psychologically, and, well… in other ways best left to the imagination.

At first, I thought I was reading a standard aging gay man contemplates life and moisturizer narrative. You know, the usual reflections on loneliness, mortality, and whether dating apps have filters for emotional availability. But no. Sir Chuck goes deeper, like, really deeper, into the grief of watching your parents grow old while realizing you’ve also somehow become one of them.

But that’s only part of it. Chuckberry somehow crams an entire buffet of life into this story. Sex, longing, regret, identity, and the endless human quest to make sense of it all.

This book also gave me a window into the lives of gay men, particularly their sex lives, with zero censorship and maximum honesty. There’s no warning label, but I'll be clear now, this is not a bedtime story for your niece. However, it is essential reading for adults who still think bading and bayot are insults.

Chuckberry writes so well it’s annoying. Every sigh, rustle, bead of sweat, the smell of regret, hits you like a cinematic close-up.

Somewhere along the way I stopped reading and started watching. If you don’t pause to breathe, you’ll forget you’re holding a book and not watching a perfectly shot film.

And if this story really ends here, if Ryan’s tale just vanishes without any hope of continuation, I’m joining the protest.

Count me in with the furious readers boycotting Chuckberry for ghosting us.

Man, you don’t drop a story this good, this charged, this thirsty, and then just disappear. 'Di ka ba karmahin niyan, boss.

Matapang ang portrayal kay Ryan: he is not perfect, he is human.

Despite its short length, it will make you feel a lot of things—lungkot, saya, at kilig.

Overall, I liked it and enjoyed his writing style.

A friend advertised this to me as smut, and I thank God that it isn't. I have never been a fan of explicit sex—or even sex in general—in literature, because I find that sex is often used as a device to senselessly entertain and elicit an emotional response from readers that bears no value whatsoever to a story's message. When I started reading literary fiction, I realized that I was reading about the wrong kind of sex: romance-novel-BookTok-slop sex is different from literary sex. Literary sex, I find, contains all the entertainment that one would get from a typical sex scene in a romance novel, but written in such a way that connects to a story's themes and overall message, even as an aid to characterization. A great example that I can think of is Sally Rooney's Normal People.

Pascual's Daddy does the same. While initially recommended to me as a smutty novella, upon reading it I found the sex, despite its graphic depictions and explicitness, to not be abhorrently titillating and instead serves the story's overall message about aging, loneliness, and the relentless search for intimacy in a fast-moving world. I found Pascual's rawness in writing about sex and sex scenes themselves to be both insightful and refreshing. Yes, it can be overexcessive, but I also feel that each detail serves to let us know who these characters really are. Even with the novella's length, I also feel that Ryan is a very complex, well-written character. I loved Pascual's portrayal of queer intimacy and one's growing insecurities with aging, and his writing possesses a certain humorous and poignant yet candid quality that I sporadically find in my reads.

i liked how the book tackled some of the insecurities gay men face once they get older—the fear of slowly losing our prime and of no longer having the energy to find love. it’s a serious topic and this book did a great job at opening that discussion through the character of Ryan.

i also liked how Ryan was portrayed here. he’s a forty-year old guy who act like he didn’t care much but deep inside has his own worries. he felt real. forming his own opinions and giving us a glimpse of his habits. we may be different in terms of personality and views in life, but the fact that it made me connect to him says a lot about how well the character was written.

however there were times when i feel like the book seemed unsure of what it wanted to be. at first, it gave an impression that it was smut, but midway through it became sort of slice-of-life content? and then went back to smut again, and then like a commentary of something. it’s a little confusing.

i’m also conflicted about the ending. the story had a chance to conclude on a strong note, but instead it scrapped that route and took a quick detour—all for a cheap shock factor. i wasn’t sure what the ending was meant to impart. was it suggesting that people like Ryan are doomed to remain stuck in that situation simply because they’re older and no longer desire or believe in love? if that was the intent, it needed clearer foreshadowing. as it stands, the ending felt underdeveloped and unsatisfying.

Daddy was written in a different style by Sir Chuck. After reading the comedic novel The Vanishing, it felt like we were already handa na tayo for more mature roles. The spicy scenes were visible in almost every chapter. Aside from the explicit scenes, the novel gives readers a glimpse into the less-discussed topic of growing old and rediscovering oneself. With the aspect of being stagnant in one’s path for a long time, the story dwells on the need for self-validation, self-worth, and intimacy.

What I like about this novel is its bold way of discussing safe sex and HIV. This novel shows how illness can be prevented and the proper ways to get oneself checked.

It also mentions responsibilities that most single people deal with, giving readers a moment to reflect on how much they give to others and reminding them not to overlook their own needs.

Personally, I paused reading this twice in 2026 because I was quite intimidated by the deep Tagalog terms used at the beginning. But third time’s the charm, and I ended up loving it.

Despite being a short read, this book was such a good one. It discusses many layers in terms of relationships, personal growth, and one’s responsibilities. Above all, age may just be a number, but taking a big leap of courage can give anyone’s life meaning.

Daddy is the kind of book that proves a story doesn't need more than a few pages and tender honesty to leave a bruise.

Ryan is an older queer man looking for connection. Maybe a relationship, maybe just a warm body to spend the night with, maybe something he can't name yet. That's the whole book.

What makes this compelling is how ordinary the wanting is. There's nothing dramatic here, no grand tragedy—just a gay person moving through his days hoping someone will meet him halfway. And underneath that ordinariness sits the harder truth: for queer people, especially older queer people, the simple act of finding someone can be an especially challenging endeavor because of society's "traditional values." It goes darker and more personal than I expected but there's a tenderness running under the whole thing that kept it from feeling completely desolate.

Ang key takeaway natin ay everyone has a place in the gay dating scene. The possibilities are endless. Bahala kayong mawindang.

This is a good short read. To be honest, I can relate to this book a lot. Although I am not in my 30s, 40s, or 60s yet, what’s currently happening in the community is really discussed or reflected in the book. Maybe this book is also an eye opener that it’s really hard to grow and become an old gay, which sucks by the way.

I was gagged sa last page like literally I re-read the whole last page 3 times just to confirm na tama nga yung nabasa ko. I have recommended this to some of my friends para naman alam nila ang colorful gay world.

Ryan is a very interesting character. Sayang lang na hindi ko masyadong naramdaman charcter niya and maybe it's because of the short length of the story. Bitin siya for me but it was still a good read!
