To say I was excited to experience this book again through Graphic Audio is a complete understatement!
I first read Blood and Steel 2 years ago via audio and although I was completely obsessed with the story I couldn’t help but cringe at the original narration. Mainly the narrators voices for the opposite sex. Obviously I wouldn’t let something so trivial affect my rating and based off of the writing, storyline and character development I gladly gave this series a solid 5 stars.
Listening to this the second time around through graphic audio gave this story new life and made for a thrilling experience. I loved the full cast narration and added sound effects. It truly is like a movie in your mind.
Thank you Graphic Audio for gifting me an ALC of Blood and Steel. I enjoyed every moment of it.

This is my 3rd read of this series (once via standard audio, once in print) and it truly gets better with every read. I’ve reviewed the story in the past, and I love Scheuerer’s world building, slow burn tension and the mystery and secrets that are revealed. And I obviously love Kipp because he’s amazing and probably deserves a story of his own in the future! Yes, shameless plug for more Kipp.
The audio production here is stellar. This might be my favorite read of Thea and Wilder’s story so far! I loved Dominique Salvación as Thea - she brought so much of Thea’s drive to life with her voice. And Rayner Gabriel was absolutely amazing as Wilder. His reluctance to accept Thea and the way it turns into acceptance and MORE? Sublime. The full cast just shines (Michael Glenn is one of my fave narrators of all time and I love seeing him anywhere). I originally read Blood & Steel and absolutely loved it, but experiencing the GraphicAudio dramatized adaptation made me fall in love with the story all over again. I didn't think it was possible to become even more invested in Thea and Wilder, but hearing this world brought to life with a full cast completely elevated the experience.
Helen Scheuerer has created a romantasy that perfectly balances brutal training, political intrigue, found family, and a slow-burn romance that is worth every second of the wait. Thea remains one of my favorite fantasy heroines because she's determined, resilient, and earns every victory through grit rather than luck. And Wilder? The broody, protective, emotionally constipated warrior of my dreams. The tension between them is exquisite, and knowing what was coming somehow made every interaction even sweeter.
The GraphicAudio production is genuinely one of the best I've listened to. Laura C. Harris embodies Thea's determination, vulnerability, and fiery spirit so naturally that she felt exactly how I imagined her while reading. Danny Gavigan was born to voice Wilder—his deep, commanding performance perfectly captured Wilder's intimidating exterior while letting those quieter, protective moments shine through. Their chemistry was undeniable and made every scene together feel even more emotionally charged.
The supporting performances from Dominique Salvacion, Rayner Gabriel, and Nanette Savard added so much richness to the world, giving every character a distinct voice and personality. Combined with the cinematic score, immersive sound effects, and seamless production, it truly felt like listening to a fantasy television series rather than an audiobook. Every sword fight, training sequence, and emotional confrontation pulled me deeper into Thezmarr.
Even though I already knew the story, I found myself just as captivated—if not more so—the second time around. That's the mark of both an incredible book and an exceptional audiobook production. If you've already read Blood & Steel, I can't recommend the GraphicAudio adaptation enough. And if this is your first time experiencing the story, you're in for something truly special.

I really did have a good time with this book the only reason I’m not rating it higher is because I’m just so sick of the lost royal heir chosen one trope. Why couldn’t she just be someone who worked really hard to achieve her goal and be dedicated and put all of her effort in to it all her life? But nooooo they had to give her magic and make her a lost royal heir and shit. Honestly it is kinda the typical copy paste Romantacy but the voice actors really were what did it for me I love them so much the graphic audios really do make the books so much better.
I’m interested to see how Wilder (hilarious name by the way) and Thea’s relationship is going to develop going forward with him being her mentor. Call me basic but I love the forbidden romance trope so I’m gonna have fun with all the pent up tension they’re going to have. I like that Wilder admitted to himself at the end that he’s in love with Thea.
Also Cal and Kip are my some of my fave parts of this book I love them 😍

Have I read and loved this book? Yup! Do I reread books on the regular? Also, yes. Is Blood and Steel on graphic audio absolutely fantastic?? 1000000%
Helen's writing is some of the most beautiful and descriptive writing I've ever read. I love how she describes everything and I can visualize the world! And the world building in this book is so well done.
For anyone who hasn't read this amazing book, we meet Althea in the beginning, an alchemist in Thezmarr. She doesn't particularly love being an alchemist and would much rather be a warrior. But after a prophecy years ago, women were blocked from being warriors. It hasn't stopped Thea from training though!
She watches others and when she's caught training by one of the elite warriors of the kingdom, Wilder. She's evebtually taken to the king where she saves his life from a poisoning and he in turn grants her wish to train as a warrior.
Wilder helps with her training and the two develop a lusty friendship that deepens after every encounter.
I won't give away any more of the story but it's fantastic! The chemistry with Thea and Wilder is off the charts and their banter! Thea is such a sassy and sarcastic queen and I love the tension between the two. And Wilder is so down bad for Thea that it just makes it hilarious almost in their attempts to avoid a relationship.
I love the battle scenes, again, they're so well done and had me in the action without being lost.
As this one is a Graphic audiobook, you get different voice actors for each character. I've listened to a bunch of Graphic audiobooks and this one is pne of the best. Everyone was cast perfectly and the production was also fantastic!

Some stories are worth revisiting, especially when the voices bring them to life in entirely new ways.
As Blood & Steel is one of my all-time favorite reads, I went into the dramatized adaptation with very high expectations.
Wilder Hawthorne, who firmly occupies a spot on my book husband shortlist and still smells unmistakably of rosewood and leather, felt exactly as I imagined him. Thea Zoltaire remains the kind of FMC I can’t help but root for: stubborn, capable, and more than willing to accept the challenges imposed on her as the only woman among the Shieldbearers.
What has always made this story stand out for me is that it offers more than romance. Thea’s evolving friendships with Kip and Cal, her struggle to find her place within the Shieldbearers, and the looming implications of her fate stone add depth and emotional weight to the narrative. Those elements translated beautifully into the audio production.
The real star of this adaptation is the cast. Every voice felt carefully chosen, and the performances added another layer to characters I already loved. More than once I found myself extending a workout, lingering over household chores, or looking for excuses not to turn the audio off. My treadmill probably benefited from this production almost as much as I did.
Needless to say, I immediately went looking for the second installment.
If you already love Blood & Steel, this dramatized version is a fantastic way to experience the story again. And if you’ve somehow not met Wilder Hawthorne yet, here’s your chance to correct that oversight.

I’m always drawn to fantasy novels with strong female main characters, and Blood & Steel did not disappoint. Thea is fierce and compelling, navigating a deeply patriarchal society that doesn’t shy away from critiquing gender inequality and the glass ceiling women face. A layer that adds real depth to the story.
The plot is highly intriguing and makes for a strong start to the series, pulling you in from the very first pages. One standout moment was when Thea is struck by lightning, a true goosebumps scene ⚡️.
The tension between Thea and Wilder is incredibly well done. Their banter is sharp, the chemistry is off the charts, and lines like “Come on, do it.” “What? Kill you or kiss you?” had me completely undone 🫠🥵.
I also loved the dynamics between Thea, Kipp, and Cal, which bring great found-family vibes and balance the intensity of the story.
A small but amusing observation: why are all the jerks in fantasy novels always called Barlow by their last name? Is this some kind of unspoken rule? 😅
And that ending...what a cliffhanger. What a book. Experiencing it in graphic audio made it even better.
Overall, Blood & Steel is a gripping and powerful fantasy read that left me desperate for the next installment.

Listen....I'm always gonna be a down bad Helen Scheuerer fan. That's a given. AND THIS IS WHY!!!
I just know the care that was put into making this dramatized adaptation had Helen's hands all over it. She cares that her readers FEEL her story and this adaptation is about as immersive as one can get.

4.5🌟 Audiobook
A fun, bingeable romantasy that is a simple easy read (read under 24 hours). If you want all the romantasy tropes then here, you go and reading slump bye-bye. Think Fourth Wing but with the volume dial turned down on the world-building, the politics, and the stakes with lower brain power required.
You should read this series before Ashes of Thezmarr. Reading Iron & Embers first will contain spoilers for this book.
The audiobook was a multicast, full production with sound effects and definitely worth your time if you want something cinematic to listen to.
The FMC: Thea
Thea was the best part of this book for me. I loved her because of her determined, rebellious warrior personality, and her refusal to conform with a world that has actively legislated her out of wielding blades. She spends her entire life training in secret regardless! She still fights for her place at Thezmarr, despite carrying a death prophecy, so she gets all the respect from me!
Her warrior personality was sometimes performed (ie: she would say that she doesn’t have delicate hands like her sister etc), I think this and intentional choice was to help with the easy-to-read writing and world-building directed to readers in a slump.
The MMC: Wilder
There is no miscommunication whatsoever, if you hate that trope you will love this! Wilder Hawthorne is a cinnamon roll golden retriever in a broody man's armour. There was funny banter, you will laugh and giggle. He seems devoted and down bad. It would have been nice if there were higher stakes/conflict in their dynamic (ie: wanted more push before the pull). Maybe this says more about me – that I wanted it to hurt a little more. However, this was done not detract from the book/plot whatsoever. It was still a very fun read.
The Plot
The plot is twisty and fast-paced, most of the problems are quickly solved. If you are in a slump, this book will do it for you. The war college setting was fun, there is hazing, initiation trials, training, and fighting, the camaraderie, found family — it all gave great Fourth Wing energy without demanding the same level of investment in politics or lore. This is a book you can devour in one sitting without taking notes.
The ending was also a massive WTF moment. I no longer trust anyone.

It is the perfect palate cleanser between heavier reads, and an ideal gateway romantasy for anyone just dipping their toes into the genre. Thea alone is worth the price of admission for me.

Okay Helen Scheuerer you've got my attention!
Althea and her sister Wren were abandoned at Thezmarr when they were children with no memory of their parents. While Wren flourishes at being an alchemist Althea longs to be a Warsword. Unfortunately women are not allowed to have weapons due to a prophecy told twenty years ago. All previous women warriors were stripped of their weapons and forced to do other castle duties or could leave the territory. I'm not sure when the author started writing this but I immediately related the stripping of weapons from these warrior women to the overturning of Roe v. Wade and I was angry for them! When Thea gets caught with a weapon she's sent to speak with the kings to ask permission to train and happens to be escorted by a Warsword named Wilder Hawthorne. The secondary characters were fun as well. Kipp and Cal, Wren, Malik, and Torj were all well written and carried depth. The pacing was a bit fast but easy to follow. We are left with a soft cliffhanger and a road block in Wilder and Thea's relationship though I think it will quickly be tossed aside in Book 2, these two are mad for each other. There's so much more I want to know...like what happened with Wilder's mentor, the whole magic thing!, the King feels fishy...something's going on there. This was a really solid romantasy read and I would say the only thing that really irked me was how fast it went, it really doesn't seem like a 500+ page book at all. And I do wish some of the spicy scenes had a bit more patience to them (it seemed like these two just attacked each other each time and I wanted them to slow down a bit and create a bit of tension if that makes sense).
I was blessed to receive an ALC of Blood and Steel the Graphic Audio version and it was mostly enjoyable. As per usual with Graphic Audio they have great production. I did find the narrator who does Thea's voice to be a bit nasally at times but overall she was good. The pacing was great as I was able to listen at my usual 1.25x speed and all the little added sound effects just enhanced my listening experience. I will definitely continue this series with Graphic Audio.

Althea and her sister Wren were abandoned at Thezmarr when they were children with no memory of their parents. While Wren flourishes at being an alchemist Althea longs to be a Warsword. Unfortunately women are not allowed to have weapons due to a prophecy told twenty years ago. All previous women warriors were stripped of their weapons and forced to do other castle duties or could leave the territory. I'm not sure when the author started writing this but I immediately related the stripping of weapons from these warrior women to the overturning of Roe v. Wade and I was angry for them! When Thea gets caught with a weapon she's sent to speak with the kings to ask permission to train and happens to be escorted by a Warsword named Wilder Hawthorne. The MMC, Wilder Hawthrone, one of the only remaining Warswords left was assigned to be her guard/escort on her trip to/from the kingdom. While he is a grumpy closed off gruff warrior his brother Malik- with dog and his friend/fellow warsword Torj Elderbrock who is the golden retriever to Wilder’s grump!
From Tears in the veil and Reapers and Wraths coming through, to Kidnapped friends, to finding totems! One of my favorite scenes was the battle to hold off the Reapers while the war swords tried to end them, and then I loved the trials to get the totems!

The Dramatized Adaptation of the audio version is the way to go! It's like night a day, listening to the graphic audio version. I loved listening to all of the different narrators, so many characters and the sound effects.
Blood and Steel is about a young and strong independent FMC, Thea. She lives in a world that woman can't be warriors. But that doesn't stop Thea in pursing her dream.
The main storyline is Thea's journey in trying to be come a true warrior and earning a place within the group of warrior men. I usually wouldn't go for this type of storyline, but I found myself sucked into this world.
Wilder is a War Sword, an official warrior and he mentors Thea, you can see where this is going. I kind of wanted more of a slow burn and Thea and Wilder's relationship was overall a slow-burn, but they found attraction to each other almost at first sight.
I liked Wilder, he's a bit broody but totally a gentleman through and through. He only wants what is best for Thea and he is willing to do whatever it takes for that.

I had already read and loved the original novel, so I was curious to see whether the dramatized adaptation would actually add anything or just throw some sword-clanging sound effects on top and call it a day. Thankfully, this version absolutely delivers.
The story, romance, and spice stay true to the original novel, but the full cast gives the book even more life. The performances are dramatic without becoming over-the-top, and the distinct voices make a huge difference in a story with this many characters. It is much easier to follow who is speaking and what is happening, especially during the larger scenes.
The music fits the settings and action well, and the sound effects enhance the story rather than competing with it. Nothing feels distracting or overly busy. The production adds atmosphere without turning the audiobook into an audio obstacle course.
Compared with the original audiobook, I thought this version was better. The cast made the characters easier to distinguish, the dramatic format improved comprehension, and the entire production pulled me deeper into the story.
I loved it and would absolutely recommend this edition to both longtime fans and anyone experiencing Thezmarr for the first time.

I'm always drawn to fantasy books with strong female main characters, and Blood & Steel did not disappoint.
Thea is a fantastic FMC, fierce, determined, and confident. She knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it, which made her such an enjoyable character to follow.
The plot kept me engaged from beginning to end, the world-building was immersive, and the battle scenes were especially well written. I could easily picture everything happening.
The ending delivered and left me genuinely excited to pick up the next book. 🖤
The GraphicAudio adaptation was excellent as well. The voice cast was perfectly chosen, the music and sound effects enhanced the story without overwhelming it, and the quieter moments were allowed to breathe. A fantastic production from start to finish. 🎧✨

I really enjoyed this one. If you like fantasy with warrior training, a slow burn, and a mentor MMC, this is worth picking up.

Let me start by saying, I LOVE this story. The Legends of Thezmarr is one of my favourite series, so I was very excited to experience Blood & Steel as a dramatized audiobook, especially as this was my first one.
And honestly… it was a LOT 😂 The full cast, breathing, footsteps, sound effects and music made it incredibly immersive, but at times I found there was just too much going on and I got a little overwhelmed. I think I’m much more suited to a traditional audiobook where I can just focus on the narration and story.
The story itself? Still 5⭐. Althea and Wilder are everything, the tension is pure perfection, I will never get tired of this world and the side characters. But rating the dramatized adaptation specifically, I’m giving it 3⭐. Loved this so much! This is such a great story, i love Thea, Wilder and the others. Thea is an absolute badass who is ready to do whatever it takes to become the warrior she’s always dreamed of. Wilder had no idea what hit him 😂 I adore the found family in this, Warren and the others alchemists, Cal, Kip, Torj Audra and the rest are perfection. I read the kindle edition last year and was super excited to listen to the graphic audio. This is actually my first dramatized audio book and It absolutely did not disappoint. I loved the immersion that you get from a full cast and audio effects, it really helps to suck you in to the story. I enjoyed the full cast, all the voices felt right for the characters. i am definitely looking forward to listening to the second book.
Random side thought, i love audiobooks, I listen to them all the time during my commute. Sometimes I’ll get distracted or zone and have to rewind and I noticed it didnt happen as often with the dramatized version.

I honestly never thought I'd get around to reading this. But after getting approved for the ALC, I ended up binge-listening to it.
This was also my first experience with a dramatized adaptation (GraphicAudio), and I absolutely loved it. Usually, I get a little bored while listening to audiobooks, but that never happened here. The full cast, sound effects, and overall production made the story so immersive that I was hooked from start to finish.
I really enjoyed the characters, and I'm so glad I finally got to experience Thea's story.
Safe to say, I'll definitely be hopping on the bandwagon and checking out the rest of the series.

Blood and Steel is part of The Legends of Thezmarr series, and I listened to the dramatized audio version. I really enjoyed it overall, the political intrigue kept me engaged, and the romance and side characters brought a lot to the story, especially their camaraderie with each other. I've never been much of a fan of dramatized audiobooks in the past, but this one actually won me over. There weren't any loud background noises pulling focus away from the dialogue or the characters themselves, which is usually my biggest complaint with this format. The narration came through loud and clear the whole way through. A solid listen. 4.25/5

This story started off a little slow then it ran all the way to the end. The lore was top notch and the way the author gave us information was perfectly paced once the world was set. Thea and Wilder were so perfect for each other the chemistry between them was molten. The end of this audiobook was epic. I am ready for part 2 and the rest of the series.
The full cast narration was well executed and there weren’t many cringy moments if you are listening at a faster speed which I appreciate because some other full cast dramatizations were horrible at 2x speed.

What an amazing adventure this book was! I enjoy a good audio book, but to listen to a story in graphic audio is something else entirely. This story is vividly brought to life by the narrators and I found myself fully immersed in this experience. I was on the edge of my seat while Thea fought her way through every obstacle in her way to become a Warsword of Thezmarr. This was an epic beginning to this series and I cannot wait to continue the journey!

I'm in the mood to re read books and decided to do Graphic Audio. It was the best decision ever!!
The story the second time was even better with the music and the sounds. Just amazing. And I was glad I got to revisit Thezmarr as I love the characters - Kip I'm watching you -, the storyline, the writing. Helen has become one of my favorite authors.
I totally recommend it for someone who loves fantasy with a strong heroine, a broody MMC and perfect side characters.

This was a fun read. I need to say, i was in a fantasy reading slump, so i thought why not try this book in this version. I always like the dramatized adaptation of books, and i was not disappointed. I liked the voice of Danny Gavigan as Tamlin too and i am liking it now too as Hawthorn. About the back narration it was interesting to know that Althea and Hawthorn had different narrators as main narrators and different narrators as characters and i liked this setting.
About the sound effects: It was good as always, but sometimes the characters voice was a bit too quiet.

The story is a perfect balance between action and emotion, an immersive and tense universe with epic action scenes. Althea is fierce, determined and unflappable... surrounded by a group of great supporting characters.

Thanks to NetGalley for the graphic audio. This is a re-read. I love this series! FMC and MMC instantly have me rooting for their relationship. If you live fated mates, found family, engaging magic systems, twists and turns....this is a great read!

I loved this dramatized adaptation! I’ve only listened to one other audiobook like this before. I’ve read Blood & Steel already and loved the writing and the characters, but this version brought it to life for me. If you’re an audiobook girlie, pick this one!

Incredible audio production. I always love Graphic Audio dramatised audiobooks. However, this book lacked tension and felt more like a YA romantasy book than an epic romantic fantasy. I enjoyed it regardless and can't wait for the next audiobook in the series.

My first 5 star read of 2026! From start to finish this one had me hooked. Perfectly performed and such a compelling story. I look forward to continuing this series.
