I knew very little about Roanoke before reading this book, so nearly everything was new to me. The author begins with much of the background on the events leading up to colonization. However, those early chapters felt a bit dry, although they were important to set the stage for the rest. Once the focus shifts to the actual arrival at Roanoke, the pacing picks up and becomes a lot more engaging.

The final section explores several theories about the colony’s disappearance and lays out possible evidence behind each one. The structure was clear and easy to follow.

Overall, this was very informative. I just wish the opening chapters had drawn me in a little more. But for readers interested in learning about Roanoke, it’s a great introduction to the topic.

The Lost Colony of Roanoke was an interesting book. I didn’t know much other than the colonists disappeared and all that was left was the word “CROATOAN.”. It talks about how the Roanoke colony came to be and the difficulties they endured. It also explains why re-supply ships were delayed. It delves into what possibly happened to the colony and discusses what has been done to investigate the mystery. It was an informative, quick read.

I found this book to be basic information, but it was written and presented in an interesting way. I was particularly intrigued by the Dare Stones, and I wonder if the first one is real or another Depression-era fake.

I liked how this guide provided various routes of research on why the colony of Roanoke had troubles establishing a stable settlement, why the colony disappeared, and where the people could have gone. While it is fun sometimes to think of paranormal reasons for the disappearance, this guide does a good job of exploring every plausible human reason for the end of Roanoke.
