Silver Springs #4

Silver Shadows

Rate this book
When former Navy SEAL medic Stone Lawson moved to Silver Springs, Texas, to start a security company with his four best friends and former teammates, falling in love was never part of the plan. Especially not with Mae Morgan—the sharp, spirited secretary at Montgomery Defense–who also happens to be his best friend’s little sister.

After nearly two years of keeping their relationship secret from her brother, Mae is ready to take the next step. But just as their love reaches its strongest point, shadows from Stone's past begin to take root in his mind. Haunted by ghosts he thought were long dead and buried, and convinced he’s protecting Mae from himself, he pushes her away.

Then one morning, in the heart of town, under the wide Texas sky, Stone is shot and left for dead—his blood staining the streets of Silver Springs as his secrets bleed out with it.

When Stone wakes, he doesn’t remember breaking Mae’s heart, or the deadly threats that forced him to do it. With his memories trapped in the fog of trauma, Mae becomes his anchor. Staying by his side means reopening old wounds—but walking away could mean losing him forever.

Yet love doesn’t come without scars. As Mae grieves a loss that steals her hope, Stone aches to comfort her while trying to understand why she keeps turning away. He doesn’t remember the pain he caused, and she can’t forget it. When his love becomes one more reminder of everything they’ve lost, the bond between them begins to fracture.

Heartbreak cuts deeper than any bullet, and when the truth finally comes to light, Stone will have to fight harder than ever—not just for her safety, but for her forgiveness.

Because this time, it’s not just his life on the line… It’s the only woman he’s ever loved—and the future he nearly destroyed.

I was lucky enough to be gifted a ARC copy of this book. Thank you Tilly Colson for such an amazing gift. Every book in this series has packed a punch and Silver Shadows is no exception.

I am an extremely slow reader and I read this entire book in one day because I couldn't bare not knowing what happened next to these wonderful characters.

I've loved both Stone and Mae's characters throughout this whole series. Mae was always a bad ass FMC with her strength, her kindness, her determination but also how real she is (always giving me Donna Paulsen vibes) and this book only confirmed how true that is. And Stone, what can I say.. he is also ridiculously kind but oh so beautifully flawed.

I was not prepared for the emotional roller coaster that was Stone and Mae's story and I couldn't recommend this book and the Silver Springs Series more. Thank you Tilly for this gift, not just the copy of the ARC, but the gift of these characters stories.

What can I say, I was desperate for this book to come out after the last chapter of Silver Sanctuary and am beyond grateful to Tilly H Colson for allowing me access to an ARC e-book edition, I don’t think I could wait til December!

I love Mae and Stone (Doc) and I think they are one of my favourite book couples. Mae’s strength in this book is something to be admired, she is a seriously kick ass FMC. My heart shattered alongside Doc’s, make sure to have the tissues at the ready folks…

I love the found family dynamic and the way the ‘brothers’ are all there for each other and take care of each other, however I think some of the decisions they made in this book (for arguably good reason) were heartbreaking and put so much pressure on Mae at an already difficult time.

I can’t wait to see the final chapter in the Silver Springs series, looking forward to seeing Hawk and his lady hopefully get their happy ever after.

Honestly I’m not sure how I feel about this book, I will start by saying I personally don’t enjoy this style or writing, but I felt like it was just trauma after trauma, first our mmc pushes her away, then our FMc fights to be with him and she walks away. It’s just a constant battle of pushing and running.

Technically I DNFd this at 88% but I’m counting it as a read. I know what’s going to happen.
This started off so good but honestly just lost the spark.
The two MCs were each huge hypocrites and some of their behaviour felt immature.

It’s my fault for having feelings.

It’s not necessary to read any of the other books, however I do think that made their relationship more enjoyable. I went into the book already knowing Mae’s general feelings with Stone which I think added to the story that I could reference moments when other characters clicked them before we officially started learning about them. Starting the book with absolute agony was kinda mean. Honestly I love that we don’t understand the thought process behind Stone’s actions until much later in the book. I already loved both characters going into the book but wow do I love them even more. Seeing the couple communicating with one another is hotter than foreplay. Watching Stone trusting Mae to be honest about what she wants & having him only step in when he sees her struggling is also lovely to see. Whilst I think I would’ve enjoyed a chapter or two showing Stone bettering himself with therapy I think you can still see his growth even without an on page therapy session.

Talk about care taking my god. He’s so gentle with her.. seeing him wake up from the hospital to immediately sliding back into his caretaker role is really cute because he defaulted back to what he remembered which means we got an inside look at what their relationship looked like when they were sneaking around. I prefer that to flashback caretaking scenes.

You can tell these characters genuinely love each other and truly care to work on their relationship even when shit gets tough. I love seeing both characters toughness that doesn’t matter in terms of being vulnerable with each other. There’s such a good balance of badassery and softness between them both.

Miscarriage tw from here
Seeing both parents grief over their baby was refreshing. I don’t feel like we see a lot of the dad’s grief in lots of books and I cherished watching Stone’s agony. Both have such amazing friends but when stone is dismissing his feelings with ‘well I wasn’t really a dad’ watching his friends disagree and explaining to him why he’s wrong is such a beautiful scene. Watching Stone’s toxic masculinity behind his thoughts of “I have to be strong & can’t cry” melt away with the support of his friends also makes me so happy. Yes he cries from the jump but then he tries to shutdown all of his emotions. Seeing that it’s his friends and not Mae correcting that behavior is like a breath of fresh air. I know none of the guys really have much toxic masculinity but seeing them grow further away from the little that’s left is so exciting to me.
Might be a hot take but I am really happy that the book ends without any more pregnancy (on mae’s part). It’ll be fun to see if she gets pregnant when she’s no longer the main focus in the next book. I feel mean for saying I’m happy they haven’t gotten their wish yet but I really appreciate ditching the pretty common pregnancy epilogue that is almost guaranteed with couples who struggle to have kids. Their happiness isn’t contingent on another baby. They’re learning how to have a full life together as they heal before they have another baby. The ending doesn’t really feel like an ending and I’m happy that the ending feels more like a pause, it leaves you happy knowing they’re doing well, & while the lack of a pregnancy might be a bit of a let down, it’s also a huge relief knowing you don’t get left hanging on if they’d have a successful pregnancy. Again I look forward to seeing how their story develops in the background of Silver Sunshine.

“Silver Shadows” is the fourth book in “The Silver Springs Series.” Stone Lawson, aka Doc, aka Sully, is a retired Navy SEAL Medic from Texas. Mae Morgan is the secretary at Montgomery Defense and also Hawk Morgan’s, aka Phoenix’s, sister. Stone and Mae have been in a secret relationship for nearly two years, until he ends it with no logical explanation. “But I’m begging you, please. Please don’t act like letting me go is in my best interest. I know what I want, and it’s being by your side as you work through this. As you get better, and heal your mind, and go on to accomplish incredible things.”

To clear his head for breaking Mae’s heart, he goes for a run when he is shot twice and left for dead on Main Street. “Arriving at the hospital, Stone is still in surgery…. “I love him, Hawk. You think I-I’m waiting after you t-tell me he died in your arms? That his heart restarted but no one was sure it would stay beating?” When he eventually wakes up from coma thirteen days latter, he does not remember the last two months. He does not remember breaking up with her and breaking her heart. “Was it a blessing he couldn’t remember? Was it the second chance she’d been praying for? Mae’s hands shook….” Is this the second chance that she has been wishing for? She wants to pretend, she would do anything for him but is scared that she will lose herself in the lies. What will happen to them if or when he remembers what happened before he got shot? Will he hate her or want to stay together….

There is never a dull moment! This book is everything you expect from a alpha male small town romance! I’m very happily hooked - I did not want it to end! Once I started reading, I could not put this book down! At times you will laugh, you will cry, get angry and frustrated - most of all, you will love the twists! This book will charm “the pants off you” and leave you going back for more 😊 I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful love story. This is a lovely book that will keep you hooked! It has fun, laughs, intrigue, twists that you do not expect, and physical attraction. You will fall in love with Stone and Mae 💗

This is a lovely book that will keep you hooked! It has fun, laughs, intrigue, twists that you do not expect, and physical attraction. Thank you @author.tilly.h.colson for the opportunity to read and review this arc!

YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!!

This book starts out steamy right out of the gate, then just as quickly plunges you into heartbreak. The way that the author is able to do this and keep the reader engaged throughout is perfection!

This is a book that you need to read and is book 4 of the Silver Spring Series. It follows MMC Stone (former navy seal medic, Doc), one of The Montgomery Defense Team members, and FMC Mae, Stone's fellow team member Hawk's sister who finds out the hard way that they have been in a relationship. Stone has demons from a threat that he's fighting, and all though he has fallen for Mae( Michaela) he is afraid to put her in the midst of them. Both of their hearts are broken when he pushes her away. After something major happens Mae ends up going through a lot and needs to leave Stone, yet he doesn't remember what that is. Mae needs a separation, and needs time to heal.

Stone ends up telling her, her brother, and their friends that he will wait for her as long as it takes.
I am so glad that Tilly continues to write the FMC's as strong women, and knows how to bring everything back together at the right time making a perfect HEA!!

I cannot wait to see how Hawk and Jessie's book is going to be after that ending! Bring it on!!

Quotes:
“Home is here, Michaela. Right here. This house. You and me. Silver Springs. Got it?”

“This is perfection, Mae. You always have been, and you always will be in my eyes.”

“How did you have so much faith? We haven’t talked in all this time.” “I knew that you needed time and space to work on what you needed to work on. And even though it fucking killed me to not pick up the phone twenty five times a day and reach out to you, I let you go. Because the truth has always been there, Mae. It’s always been you. It’s always been us.”

“No. Don’t cry,” he begged. “I’m so sorry. You don’t like it?” She shook her head. “I love it. It’s exactly what I saw in my dreams.”
“Maybe it wasn’t a dream you were seeing, but a glimpse of the future.”
“Thank you for this. For all of this. For doing this for us when I couldn’t.”
“Always, Mae. You’ll never be the only one fighting for us ever again.”

Oh my heart. This book is absolutely crammed full with emotions, intensity, heartbreak, and hope. I cried, laughed, giggled, screamed, thought about Dr. Quinn, raged, grieved, and stressed myself out. It was so, so good!

Mae/Michaela is the assistant to the Montgomery Defense Team.

Stone/Doc/Sully is a former SEAL and current member of the Montgomery Defense Team.

They have known each other for years. He has worked with her brother forever. They have been sleeping together for less than that. She thought they were headed for forever. He told her no & ended it. Then he got shot & woke up with no memory of their ending, only their happy. It is not easy.

Mae is perfection & I adore her. She feels so deeply but tries to hide it because she isn't the emotional one, she is the fun one, she doesn't want to be an inconvenience. Her story is filled with what seems like endless pain & sorrow. She cannot keep avoiding it, which means eventually choosing herself & space. Her story is hard. Her joy is hard fought for. And she is worth every tear.

Stone is a sweet man who has made dumb choices and then can't do anything about them because he cannot remember them. His past has come back to haunt him & has put his future in jeopardy & potentially cost him his love. It is not easy. I loved how after his injury & coma, he felt his feelings & reached out for help & talked about things. He is such a good man and he needed to remember he is surrounded by people who love & support him & he is not alone.

Tilly is one of my favourite writers. She has a way of writing emotions & characters that absolutely destroy me but in the good way that makes me feel a little bit more whole because it touched a hidden part of me that needed a good cry.

I received this as an ARC and am beyond grateful!! This had no impact on my review.

Oh the angst! Tilly warned us, but my heart wasn’t ready 😭❤️

This series is so special and heartbreaking in equal measure, the characters Tilly writes stay with you long after you read their stories. Stone and Mae were no different. I renjoyed reading Silver Shadows so so much (who wouldn’t when the first page starts right with some spicy spice. Stone has quite the dirty talkin’ mouth lemme tell you..🔥😉)

Be prepared to be gutted and feel all the feels with this couple. Mae is such a strong FMC who knows who she is and knows her worth. She isn’t afraid to stand up for herself and defend what she knows to me right. And SULLY!

This man! Oh my…..man makes some dumb mistakes when he thinks he’s trying to do right but man oh man does he have it BAD for his women ❤️❤️

Also did not expect Dr. Quinn to pop up in this book, so sweet how they bonded over that show and how she calls him Sully. Both men know how to YEARN for their women and yearn hard.

I definitely read this book in under 48 hours because I couldn’t think of anything else but Stone and Mae. I was so excited to get this as an ARC and very thankful 🥰🩷

The Silver Springs series is one of my favourites. If you adore protective MMCs, great banter and small town charm with even better small town characters then you need to read Silver Shadows.

Can’t wait for the next book 💕

The fourth installment in the Silver Shadows series had a blend of heartache, mystery, and healing. I loved watching Mae and Stone’s relationship finally come into full focus after getting small glimpses of them since the first book. Understanding a bit of their backstory you get to finally see how their dynamic unfurls, especially under heavily traumatic circumstances.

Mae, a strong willed woman, is put in a position where she must set aside her own needs to care for the people she loves. In doing so, she faces some incredibly heavy experiences and, as women often do, she gets back up and keeps moving forward. She is resilient and I deeply empathized with her.

Stone was a bit off putting at first, seeming distant and detached from Mae. But as the story unfolds, we learn the reasons behind his behavior. He has his own traumas to navigate, and watching him grow into the partner Mae needed was deeply satisfying. He respects her boundaries and gives her space to breathe, even when his feelings run deeper.

The book tackles some difficult topics, and I felt it was written beautifully, especially during the moments when she felt she had to stay strong instead of allowing herself to break.

Overall, I really enjoyed the fourth book. In fact, Mae and Stone might just be my favorite couple in the entire series.

⭐⭐½ — Almost a DNF, and that hurts to admit

I really wanted this to work for me. The setup had so much potential: best friend’s little sister, secret relationship, tortured former SEAL, memory loss, emotional angst. On paper? This should’ve been catnip.

In reality… it was exhausting.

The biggest issue for me was the emotional loop. Stone spirals. Mae hurts. Stone doesn’t remember. Mae can’t move on. Repeat. Over and over. Instead of deepening the angst, it just started to feel stagnant, like the story was spinning its wheels without actually going anywhere.

Stone’s amnesia should’ve added complexity, but it mostly served as a plot crutch to drag out conflict that could’ve been handled with actual communication. Mae’s pain is valid, but after a while her constant withdrawal felt more frustrating than heartbreaking. I stopped rooting for them and started wondering why they were even trying.

The shooting and danger element barely carried the weight it should have, and the emotional payoff at the end didn’t justify how long it took to get there. By the time the truth came out, I was already checked out.

I didn’t fully DNF—but I came close. This one just leaned too hard into angst without enough growth, momentum, or catharsis to balance it out.

Not terrible… but definitely not for me.

This fantastic continuation of the series follows Stone “Doc” and Mae’s story. We’ve been hinting at a secret relationship between Mae, Hawk’s sister, and Stone, Hawk’s best friend, throughout each book. Initially, it’s a fun fling, but over time, feelings emerge. Stone is threatened and scared for Mae, leading him to break her heart and end the relationship. Tragically, Stone is shot and loses his memories, especially after the breakup. Mae decides to help Stone heal while grappling with her own feelings, the breakup he can’t remember, and a surprise pregnancy.

I adore Mae. She’s the strongest female protagonist I’ve read in a while. She radiates fire and selflessness, always putting everyone before herself. Despite her losses, she works tirelessly to stay strong. Her breakdown is devastating and truly heartbreaking. Stone is determined to remember his shooter, heal from his injuries, and support Mae. Their souls are intertwined, and no matter how far apart they are, I had no doubt they would be together.

The story is emotionally charged, heartbreaking, but also uplifting. It’s filled with supportive friends that I missed from the previous books. There’s also an underlying suspense plot that keeps you engaged until the very end. Each story is meticulously detailed and thrilling to read. Even after this book concludes, I’m already hooked on Hawk and Jessie’s story!

Thank you to Tilly Colson and her team for sending me an ARC copy of Silver Shadows to review. I discovered Colson’s Men of Clarence County series last year when only a few books were released and absolutely ate them up. I’ve been on the edge of my seat waiting for more ever since and jumped at the chance to sign up for the ARC team of Silver Shadows.

There is absolutely nothing negative to say about this book. I annihilated it in less than a day and I loved every minute of it. We got glimpses of Mae and Stone in previous books and I’m glad they had a turn in the spotlight this time around. Their path together was by no means a straight or smooth road but they still found a way to each other in the end. Mae is such a badass woman and it hurt me to see her going through something so terrible. Stone has made my list of ultimate book boyfriends in the way he stayed by Mae through everything. I though is was so strong of him to let her go so she could heal and also took the opportunity to work on himself in the meantime.

I am so looking forward to reading Hawk and Jessie’s story in the next book.

Now that l've cleaned my glasses for the umteenth time from the tears I can jot down my overall thoughts. I. Just. Loved. This. book. That is all.
This is now my favorite romantic suspense.
There was constant action, suspense AND romance. I was never bored. I kept guessing, kept having theories in my head. The pacing was outstanding. The spice was steamy and hot! But I also really loved how intimacy was captured as well. There were tough, realistic topics that were handled with grace and care, all the hurt but honesty too. And the redemption arc, oh oh! Mae was fierce and protective but also vulnerable. Stone was vulnerable but also protective and lovable. Their story broke me. But then my heart was pieced back together. Clearly I loved this book…
(there are sensitive topics addressed, mental health matters so check potential triggers)

“What if I can get pregnant, but never actually stay pregnant long enough for our child to make it into this world alive?"

I knew this book was going to gut me and had to prepare myself before hand but wow, seeing a quote I once asked myself so many times really hit hard. This was such an emotional ride! Tilly did a phenomenal job at describing Mae’s fears and feelings and I loved seeing Stones perspective on it all too. It’s not often a man’s POV is written regarding this topic and how it can alter them too. I’m not going to lie, when we got that time jump I started panicking thinking we weren’t getting a HEA, but in the end I really liked how these characters went separate ways to grow and heal before coming back together.

This was a beautiful and touching addition to the Silver Springs series.

Stone and Mae will tear your heart to pieces as they navigate wave after wave of emotional turmoil. Their journey is a potent mix of frustration and sorrow, with both of them hurting in ways that feel raw and painfully real. Stone’s stubbornness is baffling at first, only to swell into something far more overwhelming as the layers peel back. Mae, meanwhile, is unravelled from the inside out—you won’t know whether to scream at her or cry for her.

The unknown danger lurking in the background keeps you guessing, its purpose hidden until it slowly sharpens into clarity. And when that threat is finally confronted, the real battle begins—the emotional reckoning that brings even more heartache before they can reach their hard-won HEA.

Dolly’s diner
Stone’s notebook
Powdered donuts

This is book four in the Silver Springs series, following Stone and Mae. Stone is a former navy seal who has past trauma that he needs to work through. Mae is such a strong FMC who feels like she has to hold it together for everyone Their story ripped my heart out and put it back together. Tilly handled tough topics in this book with care, it made her characters vulnerable and relatable. I was invested in this story from the first page, it was a rollercoaster of emotions and when they finally get their HEA, it is beautiful! Add this book to your TBR if you like romantic suspense with spice and angst!!

ARC review. Five stars. This book by @author.tilly.h.colson was phenomenal. The suspense was perfection. Add to that the incredible love story, full of so much heartache and angst, and you get a phenomenal read that requires a box of tissues. Mae and Stone are wonderful characters. Mae is so strong, even in the face of tragedy. She stands up for herself but she also has a vulnerable side. Stone is also strong, but he, too, has a vulnerable side as he deals with torment from his past. The couple deal with a lot and even though you know there will be high angst and a third act breakup, it still hits hard. But I promise, the angst and tears are worth it in the end, your heart will be stitched back together. This book was phenomenal, as is this entire series, and I can't recommend it enough!

Oh. My. God. This book is truly so good but SO SAD!
When I say bring your tissues, I mean it!
Mae is such a strong fmc, I love her personality and
how even during hard times she never gave up on
Stone. This book shows the true struggles of being the
loud, funny, bright friend going through a hard time.
Stone has always loved Mae. But gives her up to keep
her safe. Stone is such a protector and would do
anything for her.

I am obsessed with this book and this series! They all
are so different in stories but so cohesive as a set. It
is amazing getting to read about each couple develop
in this book!

Wow, what an incredibly emotional book! In the best way possible. Silver Shadow just because my favourite book in the Silver Springs series! It’s so fantastic😍🫠

I just love Mae and Stone. I have loved them the whole time and was feral to read their story! Stone is suffering from PTSD and starts receiving threats. So in his head he’s protecting Mae by telling her they’re over. Completely devastated Mae vows to never speak to him again. Then the unimaginable happens and Mae is forced to stay by his side.
Gaaah this book was absolutely riveting from the very start! What an incredible story and emotional journey this takes you on! Silver Shadows is so much more than just a romance book!

This whole series has had me in its clutches from the very beginning!

Tilly has done it again! This book gives us everything we want and leaves us wanting more with the glimpse of book 5.

Stone and Mae’s story was one that had me holding my family tighter. It broke and rebuilt me multiple times. The way we get to see their love grow throughout the series to only crush us in the first chapter hurts but it is 100% a hurt you need to push past because this is just the beginning for this book.

This definitely feels like the most intense book of the series. These poor characters really were going through it. Stone and Mae have had such incredible chemistry since the beginning that I shouldn’t be surprised that they had the most character work to go through. The first half felt a little more intense than the rest, especially with that gap in between. The ending was good, and a long time coming but I’m wondering if we will make our way back to Louisiana at some point.

**spoiler alert** 2 stars for the very horrible advice given to the FMC.

"What if he never remembers that time? What if you’re able to work through the things you both said to each other and you both realize that yes, this was the most horrific way imaginable to get a second chance, but it’s yours to make the most of? Maybe you two walk away from this stronger than ever before.” (
