I had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of “Inspirations and Insights from the Old Testament by Kerry Muhlestein. This book is intended to be a “Come Follow Me” commentary. I was impressed with the layout of the book. Its chapters align with Come Follow Me, making it easy to read and follow along with the weekly Come Follow Me assignment.

Sometimes, when I think of a scriptural commentary, I think of a verse-by-verse commentary that goes into painstaking detail about each verse and chapter and has numerous footnotes and references. This is not that kind of book. Rather, this book’s chapters are relatively short and a provide a conceptual overview of each Come Follow Me assignment.

Make no mistake, this book is not basic in any way. Kerry Muhlestein is the director of the BYU Egypt Excavation Project and has a deep understanding of the Old Testament. This is evident in his previous books (e.g., Return unto Me, God Will Prevail) as well as this one. Thus, the book contains information and insights that I found really useful in my study of the Old Testament.

Yet one of the strengths of this book is its inherent readability. It is clear, and there is no evidence of Dr. Muhlestein speaking above his reader. In fact, I found it to be highly focused on practical learning and spiritual growth. Within each chapter, there are various sections that highlight key happenings. Then we learn additional context and insight into the core stories.

Dr. Muhlestein very clearly outlines what we know and what we don’t, but he really works to help provide additional understanding of a scriptural book that many find intimidating. I was especially impressed by the clear emphasis on helping the reader understand scriptural (especially Old Testament) symbols and how many stories within the Old Testament provide important insight into our covenant relationship with God.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. Of course, I’m not sure it will be everything to everyone. However, if you’re looking for a book that is not intimidating, inherently readable, and yet contains valuable insights that will help you in your study of the Old Testament and bring it more to life, then this book is for you. I am especially glad for the opportunity to read it!

Very manageable to study weekly along with The Bible! Not so lengthy that you never get to it all yet so intriguing as well! I've really enjoyed it! I use the information both for my personal study & in teaching. He shares such valuable insights that have really helped the O.T. come alive for me! I'd say even teenagers would enjoy this as much as young parentd teaching young kids as much as scholars!
