From Bones to Moans: Field Notes on Tent Breach Frequency, Rock Velocity, and Female Hormonal Response in Relation to Homo Sasquatchus

Rate this book
From Dinosaur Tracks to Sasquatch Courtship Observer Objectivity = Lost.Dr. Lila Rhodes is a brilliant paleontologist with a love for bones, books, and tracking down evidence of long-lost dinosaurs. Unfortunately, she’s also saddled with a Brent—her wanna-be vlogger boyfriend whose ego is more frustrating than his tent-building skills. When their expedition deep into the forests of the Pacific Northwest in desperate search of potential dinosaur footprints takes a turn toward the strange, Lila discovers a set of tracks that don’t belong to any prehistoric creature.

They belong to something bigger. Hairier. Hungrier.

What began as a search for fossils of ancient footprints becomes a descent into a moonlit mating ritual older than civilization itself. Rocks are thrown, branches break, tents collapse—and Brent is no match for the towering Alpha who has chosen Lila as his mate.

Now, armed only with her scientific curiosity (and slightly questionable decision-making), Lila finds herself at the mercy of the most legendary cryptid of them all where she learns first

Some legends can’t be studied from afar. You need to get up-close and personal.

Packed with pseudo-scientific observations, cryptid courtship rituals, and enough chaos to destroy the fossil record, From Bones to Moans is a monster romance perfect

I’m E.M. Ashwood, and I write monster romances with too many footnotes, ridiculous levels of absurdity, and spice levels that could probably Mothman himself blush. My home life is equally cryptid-coded: one dog who moves like a wrecking ball, two cats that double as Halloween decorations, and a husband who keeps me fed when my ADHD brain forgets.

When I’m not writing (Who am I kidding, I’m always writing) I’m either cranking out yet another Star Wars fan-fiction to defend Anakin Skywalker’s honor with my best friend, researching cryptids I’d probably let take me to dinner, or with my nose stuck in my kindle reading about them.

I really liked the set up of the story with an academic FMC doing field research. However, more time was spent on her relationship with her soon-to-be ex than the MMC. It took away from the relationship building, what little existed, between her and Ash. I think the author shows promise, but this didn’t reach its full potential.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: cheating, animal predator-like stalking of campground, violence, “alpha male” podcaster and associated misogyny, mention of past COVID-19 quarantine

Lila went to the local forest with her douche of a boyfriend to find proof that dinosaurs actually roamed in their area but she found so much more. Things went from going bump in the night to oops there's the Bigfoot and he thinks she's his mate and boy did he show her just how much she was his mate.

I don't.. I... well.

This is one of those books that makes me question myself.

It was... fantastic? It was also free during a Stuff Your Kindle Day promo, and SYKD books are always kind of iffy in my experience, but this one was a winner.

The spice, obviously, was fire. There's some moments of dub con, the FMC is under the influence of some kind of pheromone or fated mate magic or something, but if you've read Ice Planet Barbarians then it's similar to that. The mating urge really cannot be denied, and takes over any kind of logical or rational brain power.

There's quite a build up to the actual encounter with Homo Sasquatchus (god what a name) and for some reason unbeknownst to me, this was actually a real page-turner. There's one plot thread that kind of got abandoned, and usually I'll reduce my rating when that happens, but in this instance, I don't even care.

Despite the base and primal instincts, the FMC tells the story through the lens of a scientific paper, with footnotes and addendums and research notes and carefully documented observations, measurements, and statistics. Which... I loved. At first I thought it was a bit strange, but the contrast between "me want fuck Bigfoot" and "If I don't document this, it didn't happen"... the need to rationalize the irrational quickly won me over.

Just read it. It's freaky, yes, but well written and the human MMC is fun to hate. Brent is a whiny little twat who absolutely deserves it when this happens to him:

From Bones to Moans is chaotic, nerdy fun. Dr. Lila Rhodes heads into the forest expecting to study potential dinosaur tracks but instead stumbles into something much bigger. Between her deadweight boyfriend Brent and the looming presence of a very interested Sasquatch, things spiral quickly into hilarious, messy, and surprisingly steamy territory.

I had the best time with the academic parody angle. The use of field notes and pseudo-scientific observations made me laugh out loud, especially when Lila’s dry logic collided with the absolute absurdity of her situation. The banter, the footnotes, the petty digs at Brent all kept the tone playful while still moving the story forward.

This book was clever, funny, and original, and I had a blast reading it. If you like cryptid romance with humor, spice, and a paleontologist trying very hard to keep her cool, check this one out.

Thank you to the author for an copy of this book.

The FMC sets off to hunt for dino tracks with her annoying boyfriend… only for the forest to start pelting him with rocks. Honestly, that alone had me hooked. It’s such a unique story, complete with hilarious field notes and undeniable “mate” energy.

- FMC in STEM x cryptid
- Fated mates
- Academic parody
- Size difference
- Fast read

Quite a fun read!

The footnotes are what elevated this bigfoot romance for me. I honestly just had a good time reading this. I was excited to see what would happen next and enjoyed the ride.

What better way to celebrate spooky season than with a deliciously chaotic monster romance novella?

From Bones to Moans introduces us to Dr. Lila Rhodes: brilliant palaeontologist, meticulous note taker, and unfortunate girlfriend to Brent - a man who has very rightfully given her the ick. Once a charming lawyer, Brent lost his job post COVID, fell down the ‘alpha male podcast’ rabbit hole, and now calls himself a ‘vlogger’ to an audience of… basically no one).

When Lila hears whispers of a groundbreaking discovery off the beaten path, she sets out to investigate. Brent tags along, growing more irritating by the minute, especially as mysterious knocks and flying rocks start pelting their campsite. Then Lila glimpses a pair of honey-amber eyes watching her from the shadows… 👀

This novella was my first foray into monster romance, and honestly? I had a blast! The humorous footnotes added a sharp, academic parody flair that made me laugh just as much as it made me blush.

If you’re a fan of:
🧌 Cryptid romance
👩‍🏫 Academic parody with plenty of spice
🦖 Dinosaur nerd energy
🗒️ Field notes that turn into feral moans

…then this little gem absolutely deserves a spot on your spooky season TBR.

I LOVED this book!

As a huge cryptids lover and just a huge nerd in general this book literally made my heart so happy!

I adored the FMC, she's smart and sassy... and her journal logs are so hilarious and entertaining!

The MMC, our beloved cryptid is a man a few words... but honesty that's ok. He's sweet and charming in his own way and it works!

The way the author describes all the little details...from the feelings that the FMC is experiencing to the mannerisms that the MMC displays make this book so incredible.

This silent communication between these two... it shows this undeniable connection that no language barrier could prevent.

The raw and primal chemistry between these two is HAWT! Like holy smokes... so hot!

And the ending... listen when I say that I squealed in delight... I mean it!

I cannot wait to see what comes next for this series!

Liiiiisten. This debut novella was everything I needed. Short sweet and spicy. Don’t let my 2 chili rating scare you. It was two great scenes!

The story follows Lila as she goes on an expedition to look at dinosaur prints in a nearby national forest. Oh- and she brings Brent. Her ultra douchey vlogger boyfriend who just seems to be in the way.

By nightfall, it becomes apparent that they are not alone, and 'poor' Brent seems to be the target of some unusual raccoon activity. One thing leads to another, and Lila ends up face to face with destiny, I mean Bigfoot.

Look- you gotta read it. I don't want to spoil anything, but lets just say Lila has BIG "shoes" to fill 💦

Umm okay I loved this so much!! It was everything I love from monster/paranormal romances! A little bit romcom, and some spicy spice! (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️) My only issue with it was that I wanted even more spice! And I always love when there’s a despicable boyfriend/ex-boyfriend to root against. I was absolutely cracking up and completely lost my cool at “Homo Douchebagus” 🤣 But really, Ash (MMC) is better at communicating than most human men, and he just grunts and growls! He puts Brent in his place, but Lila (FMC) definitely has her own “good for her” moments. And just when I thought that was the end, neatly wrapped up— SURPRISE! There was an unexpected twist! And I hope it means what I think it means!!! 🤞🏽

First I want to say thank you for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I didn’t know what to except when I started this book but it was definitely an interesting read and love that I received an ARC. Fmc is a paleontologist studying findings in the forest when she finds something more than dinosaurs findings. Everything happens so quickly after Sasquatch reveals himself. My only issue was I wish there was a clear HEA but other than that loved it and can’t wait to continue the series!

⭐️ 3.5 stars for me!

The book was really unique and refreshing. The format is like an observation journal/report with footnotes. It’s definitely my first time reading something like this.

I love how Lila stays calm and just observe everything, not like someone (if you know, you know hahahaha).

As for the story, I could feel the tension and was really curious about what kind of monster it would be. Honestly, I was a little surprised by the reveal because I never thought it would be that HAHAHA. But, he is lovely and sweet.

Overall, it was a fun and good read!

This novella was absolutely FANTASTIC and my nerdy little heart adored every moment. A FMC in STEM? Immediate yes for me. If you’re looking for a quick, comedic paranormal romance featuring Bigfoot, enjoyable main characters, a little bit of sweet and spice, and formatted as part story and part scientific field guide journal with footnotes…boy, do I have a recommendation for you.

Dr. Lila Rhodes goes searching deep in the forest of the PNW with her blogger boyfriend Brent in search of dinosaur tracks. Soon, she discovers the tracks are from something else and gets first hand experience of cryptid courting rituals. The FMC Lila’s footnotes had me absolutely cackling. The MMC Ash was a man (cryptid) of few words, but he sure got his point across. Please, please, please continue this as a multi-novella series. 100% here for it and will binge them all.

am absolutely SO exited to be posting about this because not only did I love this book BUT I love the author more than anything in the whole entire world!! So by that measure alone I’d give this book 5 stars but coupling that with the actual incredible writing and impressive plot building I couldn’t NOT give this book all the love it deserves.

Dr. Lila Rhodes (girl boss btw) is our fmc and she has a shit ass bf who Bigfoot HATES btw !!! She is out in the wilderness exploring and documenting paleontological finds when her and her gross bf Brent stumble upon Ash our hot monster (Bigfoot)

The book is written in a way that really makes you feel like you’re reading field notes and it’s INCREDIBLE. It’s such a creative concept and so well written I’m so obsessed.

Em you KILLED this and I’m so proud of you and in awe of your creativity and talent!! I love you so so big.

If you told me a scientific field guide to cryptid mating habits would be the spiciest thing I read all year, I would have said you were lying. I WAS WRONG. @authoremashwood didn't just write a book; she dropped a full-blown thesis on why we all need to be searching for our own morally-gray, rock-throwing, impossibly huge Sasquatch.

Dr. Lila Rhodes is serious about her fossils, even more serious about her research, and utterly unprepared for the very large, very grumpy, and very protective specimen she dubs Homo Sasquatchus. The faux-academic tone is pure comedic genius. Every footnote, every observation on rock velocity, every detail on tent breach frequency just made the spice hit harder. This is the perfect blend of dark comedy, primal possessiveness, and absolute filth. Forget your human boyfriends; give me the cryptid who knows how to properly protect his female. It was such a fun, wild ride, and I haven't been this entertained by a book in ages. I needed more.

Read this if you need a quick read especially for this Halloween season coming up. Grab your field notes right meow!

Thank you Emily for this ARC and happy happy publish day!

I absolutely adored “From Bones to Moans” by E.M. Ashwood! This quick, funny, delightful, and intensely hot new cryptid encounter was a fun and quick read. I happily kicked my feet while devouring this monster romance novella. The formula: Combine one Sexy Cryptid in the woods with perfect spicy and scary vibes, add a scaroused FMC, and let it develop at woods temperature through 24 hilariously dry field reports: making this a new favorite for the spooky season! I only wish it were longer! I'm excited for the next field report and hope to join the permanent experimental team.

Dinosaur tracks, a research trip, and an unexpected connection in the forest…that’s the setup for the debut novella From Bones To Moans.

Lila is off on a research trip. She has everything she needs, and one thing she doesn’t - her vlogger boyfriend. He has decided to join her for her protection. Right now, she’s only in danger of rolling her eyes too much.

But then things get odd. Rocks are thrown at them. Something investigates their tent at night…and there’s that pair of eyes Lila spots…

Torn between wanting to strangle her soon-to-be-ex boyfriend and feeling drawn to the creature in the woods, Lila keeps detailed research notes in her journals (with footnotes included). The only question now is which desire she will give into first.

This was hilarious fun. The field notes and footnotes scattered through the book are genuinely funny, as is Lila’s waning patience with her hapless wannabe alpha boyfriend. I’m not going to lie, any book that has a female lead saying “my expertise outranks your ‘alpha male’ bullsh!t” is going to move up my TBR pretty quickly.

This is an open door (open…forest??) romance. All spice is in the second half of the book, soon after the main characters finally come face to face. The only potential trigger in this book is an inexplicable urge to smother the boyfriend.

I really enjoyed this debut and it’s a perfect snack size for all fans of PNR, particularly Sasquatch hunters.

From Bones to Moans is an excellent example of a monster romance done not only effectively but also creatively. The chapter headings matching the research headings and the field notes to break up each chapter were charming and delightful additions to the story.

Spoilers below!

Fair warning: If you’re looking for a more traditional romance with paranormal or supernatural elements, then this may not be book for you. There’s not a lot of courting or conversation happening between our FMC and Bigfoot. And even though there’s only one spicy scene, the book is short enough that the wait isn’t too painful, and we’re rewarded with a pretty satisfying roll in the meadow plus some delicious aftercare.

I did think the narrative tried extra hard to get the reader to hate the boyfriend, and he was in it too much. I also feel he could have just left rather than possibly (probably) getting killed by a Sasquatch. I think there was also way too much mention of him being a red-pilled alpha that kind of took me out of the narrative. Even when Lila is with Ash, she’s comparing him to her ex and how Ash is the alpha her boyfriend thinks he is. I think the story could have gotten rid of him and never mentioned him again a lot sooner.

Overall, however, I enjoyed this story and will definitely pick up the second book in the series.

Ok first!! Let me tell you how unique this book is!
It is written as part story, part field guide, with hilarious footnotes!!

Dr. Lila Rhodes and her boyfriend Brent are on the hunt for some Dino tracks! In the PNW mountains. She documents their findings at each point, with hilarious notes about how Brent is basically incompetent and doesn’t listen to her 😂

Then a mysterious forest starts throwing rocks!! At Brent 😂😂 honestly the best part

But they discover more than they bargained for in this sexy, smart and brilliant novella!

This was incredibly hot but also just so sweet. Acceptance and love while basically saying nothing at all.
The spice was unlike anything I’ve ever read, and likely will ever read unless it’s written by E.M.Ashwood

I love Ash so much!

If you like cryptids, cryptid romance, Bigfoot, and are nerdy like me then you will adore this!
😮‍💨😮‍💨 it’s good

Thank you E.M.Ashwood for allowing me to ARC this and I can’t wait to see what is next in the Mating Habits of American Cryptids series

If you like science and find yourself as one of those “STEM girlies” then you will love this story.
Our FMC is quite the scientist and she shows us in her meticulous field notes. I suggest reading the field notes as they are humorous and get increasingly more on unhinged.

There is a boyfriend (Brent) and you will hate him, a lot, and then laugh at him. He is the comic relief of the story. Every story needs one of those.

Don’t worry it’s no cheating because she’s going to break up with him anyways…you decide.

The FMC obviously follows the big foot for science purposes, duh! She didn’t know it would be a fated mates type of thing.

There is also a language barrier if you’re into that trope. We are and love it ❤
Also, this book does a good job of not leaving out how sore, raw, in need of some cooling water a vagina may be after a night with big foot. Still no word about if UTI’s are a thing maybe that’s in a different book.

The book does have a HEA kind of ending, but also eludes to a book two with a maybe different cryptid.

cryptid human romance packed with humor

This might be my first Bigfoot romance and I absolutely adored it. From the writing to the story structure to Lila’s amazing voice, it’s packed with humor and well-crafted turns of phrase.

Paleontologist Lila is on a trip to a national park in the Cascades with douche-y wannabe alpha bro boyfriend Brent. She is done with Brent - we all know it. Brent is the only one who doesn’t, which isn’t a surprise as he’s amazingly self-centered. Lila’s searching for dinosaur tracks. Brent’s searching for vlogger fame. Only Lila will succeed.

But Lila finds more than just dinosaur tracks - she also finds something else deep in the forest.

This is tender and spicy and I loved every moment. I’ll definitely keep reading this author!

STEM FMC: PhD paleontologist
I honestly have no idea what I just read. She goes to the forest with her boyfriend to look for some newly uncovered Dino tracks (we don’t get any closure on that btw), and then suddenly a Bigfoot has claimed her as his mate. She never officially breaks up with the boyfriend, but she does have sex with Bigfoot who says they’re mates. I don’t know. It was weird and very clearly not my thing. It was short and it did have one spicy scene if you’re into cryptid spice.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but I loved this book. The main character shows that smart, strong, independent women can be cared for and loved by the right man or monster in her case.
Im so excited to read book 2 and I hope that the author keeps up the amazing work. Seriously I loved this so much. A quick read but took me longer to finish it because of work.

Dr. Lila Rhodes had me laughing hysterically over her criticizing her beta male boyfriend Brent in her scientific findings.

Enter Ash, aka Homo Sasquatchus; the alpha male of her dreams 🥰. He may be a man of few words, but I’ve always said that actions speak louder than words.
