I am the author of the DI Isabel Blood crime novels, set in the fictional Derbyshire town of Bainbridge, and the cosy crime series featuring amateur sleuth Violet Brewster, which is also set in Derbyshire.
My debut novel In Cold Blood (the first in the DI Isabel Blood series) won the 2019 Gransnet and HQ writing competition, for women writers over the age of 40 who had written a novel with a protagonist in the same age range.
Before turning to novel writing, I had been writing short stories and non-fiction articles for over twenty years, many of which have appeared in women’s magazines, literary magazines, newspapers and online.
I live in Derby, UK and have an MA in Creative Writing.
In the latest entry in the series Violet, Matthew, and their friends Fiona and Eric are off to a new glamping site where Violet has been contracted to do publicity for the owner. Of course, soon after they arrive there's a murder. I continue to like this series, but this time, in her search to discover a killer, Violet came up with some of the most improbable connections anyone could imagine for potential villains. And then, the final solution came completely out of the blue, and was more improbable than anything Violet came up with before.
A charming and thoroughly enjoyable cozy mystery, Murder at Clover Farm delivers exactly what fans of the genre crave — warmth, wit, and just enough intrigue to keep the pages turning.
Jane Bettany sets the scene beautifully at Clover Farm, a glampsite that should be the picture of rural calm… until a murder disrupts Tarquin Gold’s hopes for a quiet new life. The contrast between Tarquin’s rock‑star‑turned‑farmer backstory and the chaos that follows adds a delightful touch of humour to the mystery.
Violet Brewster, once again finding herself in the wrong place at the most suspicious time, is an absolute joy. Her curiosity, sharp instincts, and gentle determination make her the perfect amateur sleuth. Watching her navigate the quirky cast of campers — each with their own secrets and potential motives — is half the fun.
The mystery itself is light, engaging, and satisfyingly twisty without ever losing its cozy charm. Bettany keeps the atmosphere warm and inviting even as the tension builds, making this a perfect comfort read for anyone who loves countryside settings, eccentric characters, and crime solved with brains rather than brutality.
Fans of Clare Chase, Liz Fielding, and Merryn Allingham will feel right at home here. Murder at Clover Farm is a delightful escape: charming, clever, and exactly the kind of mystery you want to curl up with.
A lovely addition to the Violet Brewster series.
With thanks to Jane Bettany, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
I have only read the first two books in the Violet Brewster series, and I’m not quite sure how I managed to miss the others, but after reading Murder at Clover Farm I’ll definitely be going back and catching up. Although this is the sixth book in the series, it works perfectly well as a standalone.
Jane Bettany has a wonderful knack for writing cosy mysteries that are warm, engaging and full of charm. The mystery kept me guessing throughout, with plenty of twists and suspects to keep me intrigued, while never becoming too dark or heavy. The glamping site setting was a refreshing change and provided the perfect backdrop for another entertaining investigation.
Violet Brewster is such a likeable protagonist, and it was lovely to spend time with both familiar and new characters. The story moved at a steady pace, balancing the mystery with humour and the warmth of village life, making it a thoroughly enjoyable read from beginning to end.
If you’re a fan of cosy crime with an engaging amateur sleuth, an atmospheric setting and a satisfying mystery, I would highly recommend this series. I can’t wait to go back and read the books I missed.
Thank you NetGalley for the advance copy in return for an honest review.
Violet Brewster and her partner, Matthew have left their new home in the hands of the builders and headed off into the nearby countryside for a glamping weekend with friends Fiona and Eric. Clover Farm is owned by a former rockstar, who has hired Violet to produce a film to promote the unique aspects of his new business, everyone's plans change when a dead body is discovered. Being quite close to Merrywell Violet is delighted when Detective Charlie Winterton arrives to take charge of the investigation. With reservations being cancelled and guests leaving can Violet and Charlie find out whodunit and save the ailing business?
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, HQ Digital, but the opinions expressed are my own. I really enjoyed this, didn't guess whodunit, and it had all the things I like in a cosy. It was a pleasure to read. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
Former rockstar Tarquin Gold thought he had left his wild days behind when he traded in his glamorous lifestyle to become a farmer, but his dreams of a peaceful life come crashing down when murder rocks his newly opened glamping site. As fate would have it, amateur sleuth Violet Brewster is also a guest at the Clover Farm glamp site – and, finding herself once again at the centre of a crime scene, she can’t resist getting involved in the investigation. The sixth outing for Violet & another delightful cosy mystery. I really like Violet & thoroughly enjoyed the book. Violet is a great amateur sleuth, I love how she navigates the characters at the camping site. There are twists, turns & red herrings & I was left guessing. Strong characters, a well paced story & I was one happy reader. I look forward to more in the series I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
Read this in a very short time. Just completely inhaled it. I feel like it went by too quickly. Jane Bettany does it again and I look forward to the next one!
The only complaint I have is that the cozy village of Merrywell was not featured at all, with the whole novel taking place at the "glampsite" at Clover Farm and its neighboring village. While I really enjoyed the mystery in this one, I did miss the feeling of being in Merrywell.
I really hope another book is in the works because I love this series.
(As an aside, I love how Violet & Matthew's relationship has progressed through the six novels of this series so far.)
Violet Brewster is asked to make a promotional video for the local glamping site which just happens to run by a former rockstar . The weekend is going to be a bit of pleasure as well as work for Violet and her partner Matthew . Things don’t go to plan and as you would expect there is a murder and Violet can’t help but do some sleuthing. Will she find the perpetrator? Violet Brewster is a likeable character and her sleuthing makes for an easy read. An enjoyable cozy mystery read and great series. Looking forward to the next in the series, Thanks to NetGalley and HQ.
It's business and pleasure for Violet Brewster when she is invited to visit a glamping site with her friends before she produces some promotional material. The owner has a glamorous past, but he wants a quiet life now. When an unexpected and suspicious death occurs, all the dark secrets are gradually revealed. I enjoyed the amateur sleuthing, the relationship dynamics and the atmospheric setting. I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
Violet, Matthew and a couple of friends head off to Clover Farm for a few days of relaxing Glamping. Violet has been hired to make a video of the facilities. But we all know it's never relaxing around Violet! And yes, once again, a body is discovered. Who would want this person dead? And why?
Once again I was totally immersed in this lovely cozy crime book. I loved trying to work out what happened. But again I didn't work it out.
A visit to a clamping farm being run by an ex rock star Tarquin Gold turns into anything but a glam visit for Violet Brewster. Is it one of her fellow campers or someone from beyond the campsite gates. Who ever it is Violet just can't help herself but get involved. A wonderful, easy flowing cozy mystery. With engaging characters it was a delight to read.
The plot moved along pretty well - Violet is still mildly irritating but if she wasn’t so nosy there wouldn’t be a story. I didn’t guess the murderer until late on so that was a plus. Some of the characters were a little flat. I’ll probably continue with the series
