Riverborn: A Magical Journey of Memory and Becoming

Rate this book
A lyrical tale of transformation and purpose, where water remembers every life it carries and one creature emerges in many forms to heal, reckon, and become.

The river does more than flow. It remembers. From its hidden depths, a creature rises again and again, each time in a new bird, warrior, healer, winged being of light. With every emergence, they listen, feel, and mend wounds left by careless hands.

But this journey is not about power. It’s about purpose. Each form carries unease, each act carries consequence, and each return to the water draws the creature closer to understanding who they truly are.

Lyrical, mythic, and unsettling, Riverborn is both a fable and a on memory, transformation, and the quiet guardianship of a world in need.

Fans of Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Madeline Miller’s Circe, and lyrical eco-myths like Richard Powers’ The Overstory will find in Riverborn a world of transformation, timelessness, and hidden truths.

What you’ll find inside:

Lush, poetic prose woven with mythic atmosphere and psychological depthA world where water is alive, remembering every choice and every woundEncounters with nature’s resilience and humanity’s carelessnessA convergence that transforms solitude into collective purposeThe 7 original illustrations that inspired this story

A lyrical journey
V.M. Andrews brings us a deeply lyrical account of a river ( many rivers or one?) conscious and filled with memories that react and respond to the pain and desecration seeping into it. Sometimes the reaction is gentle, healing, but others react with violence, using destruction to build a bulwark against man’s disruption.

Accompanied/inspired by luscious artwork, each story stands alone. A progression that grows in power and complexity. Although beaten in the short term, the waterways’ extended life knows the truth of the land and how things should be to accommodate all lives.

I enjoyed Andrews’ vignettes more than I expected. I tend to enjoy solid stories with a solid beginning-middle-end, but I found myself almost lulled into Andrews’ rhythm and pace. It’s good to read something paced and structured differently from my usual fare.

Lyrical Prose

This was beautifully written, but more a work of Lyrical Prose than a story. I say that because of the absence of story structure, dialogue, and a clear story or character arc.

It is a very beautiful piece of lyrical prose though and the art matches it.
