Ice Cross My Heart

Rate this book
When he lost the world he knew, he found her.

Teddy Seaborn spent years outrunning the weight of his last name and the family expectations that came with it, all while building a new identity as a star hockey player. When a brutal hit on the ice blinds him, everything he’s worked for slips away—his career, independence, and his sense of self.

Stuck in a hospital bed, angry and lost, Teddy is isolated in more ways than one. Then she walks in.

To some, Ivy Campbell is a caring nurse, calm and focused in the most high stakes situations. To others, she’s an up-and-coming Ice Cross athlete, racing downhill icy tracks with precision and discipline. Her life is about control, with no room for distractions or emotional entanglements. Especially not with a patient.

Behind the public bad boy persona and tabloid headlines, Teddy surprises Ivy with his vulnerability, quick wit, and kindness. The more time they spend together, the harder it becomes for her to stay detached.

What begins as friendly support soon deepens into an undeniable connection. As Ivy’s season takes off and Teddy’s future remains uncertain, they’re forced to ask themselves: can a bond created in the solitude of a hospital room withstand the chaos of real life?

Due to its mature content and events, Ice Cross My Heart is unsuitable for the younger audience.

I wanted this to be like Riley & Lexi from Hat Trick but it missed the mark badddd.

Teddy is a hockey player that gets a TBI from a bad hit that lands him in the hospital and Ivy is his nurse.

The beginning of the book it’s stated that their relationship doesn’t start until after she is no longer his nurse. I was assuming that meant he was out of the hospital, but I was wrong. They started developing feelings for each other while she was still on his care team and with her being a super fan of his (like posters on her wall when she was a teenager) it just felt icky. I felt like she was definitely living a fantasy and he trauma bonded to her. I liked that they were developing a friendship then all of a sudden it was I want you!!!! Like the change was so sudden it didn’t feel sincere

The only reason I kept reading it bc I wanted to see if he got his sight back. Yes he was BLIND from his TBI this whole time they fell in love. Which I usually like books where one mc has some type of disability but here it feels like he only likes her bc she was there and took care of him 🤷🏽‍♀️

Then she leaves for 3 months for her sport and they don’t talk. at. all.???? Mind you the book had texts between them so it’s not like they didn’t communicate before she left??? This made no sense. and the voice memos. why not send them to her???

btw he never gets his sight back and he was a whore. literally starts the book with a woman in his bed. regular occurrence for him BUT don’t worry he didn’t sleep with her this time!! and he’s over the whole sleeping around thing. he only does it to piss off his parents ??? a grown man btw. so on top of everything else it’s giving he falls for Ivy cause she’s the first woman he’s around after his accident and she obviously doesn’t think he’s broken or whatever 🙄

This follows Teddy, who suffers a serious injury during an NHL match in front of millions. He wakes up in the hospital with his life completely changed, forced to come to terms with his condition and navigate a world of darkness until he meets Ivy, the nurse assigned to his care who keeps him in line. Being a big hockey fan, Teddy was her teenage crush. Can they keep it strictly professional?

I really enjoyed this one. I haven’t read a medical romance in a while, and this hit all the emotions.

Starting with Ivy she’s a passionate nurse with an Ice Cross dream. I loved how she kept Teddy in line and made his hospital stay just a little easier. I’d never even heard of Ice Cross before, and after looking it up, it’s absolutely insane and would be so hard. Ivy as a character is brilliant.

Then we have Teddy. My heart hurt for him. In one moment, his life completely flipped.
I genuinely thought this major accident would lead to hope for a near-full recovery, even if it came with risks. But wow, was I wrong and that was brilliant to me. The chemistry, yearning the slight touches, and them trying to hold back their feelings had me completely rooting for them.

I do want to mention a few things I picked up on that didn’t feel fully wrapped up, as well as one aspect that felt a bit odd given the day and age we live in with modern technology. Just be mindful slight spoilers ahead.

The player responsible for Teddy’s condition — it was mentioned that the incident was being investigated and that many people felt he should be banned from the NHL. Forgive me if I missed it, but I don’t recall a clear conclusion to this. I was also surprised that he was named as potentially joining the Ice Cross circuit. It felt like this was going to become part of the plot, but then it just disappeared.

The three months of long distance — I was honestly shocked that, despite being in different time zones, they constantly missed each other’s calls and relied on voicemails. Then after about a month, they didn’t communicate at all not even texting. I understand the voice memos as a beautiful and sweet addition, but I struggled to believe that Ivy or Teddy couldn’t send a quick text. Especially since they got together just days before her three-month stint. They just started dating that’s the honeymoon phase where they are so in love you would make the effort to try, even just sending a few text messages.

Teddy’s visual impairment — after he left the hospital, I would have liked more insight into how he was getting to appointments. I would’ve loved to see moments of struggle or frustration, especially while he was missing Ivy in that three month period.

Only for the few minor points I really enjoyed this one! I’m looking forward to picking up more of K.H. Anastasia’s work in the future.

4.5 stars. I received this book as an ARC. I have never read anything by this author before but I definitely will again. Cute story, a bit predictable but that is normal for this genre. I loved Teddy and Ivy's characters, not just your run of the mill hockey player and nurse.

Emotional, heartbreaking, passionate, and deeply inspiring — Ice Cross My Heart truly has my heart. 🩵

This story pulled me in from the very first pages and took me on an emotional rollercoaster. In moments where the MMC experienced pain, panic, and struggled to breathe, I felt it viscerally... like the tightness in my own chest mirrored his. The medical and emotional aspects were handled with brutal accuracy, and as someone who resonated deeply with these experiences, it made the story feel incredibly real and powerful. 🙌🙏💔

“I still wake up furious some mornings, choking on the unfairness of life.”

Teddy and Ivy were such a refreshing pairing. Both characters showed a level of emotional intelligence and maturity that felt authentic and grounding. I loved how they truly listened to one another, learned together, and consistently tried to be the best versions of themselves, not just for love, but for mutual support and understanding.

“Most people raise their voices out of anger. It sounded like you were drowning, and yelling was the only proof that your head was still above water.”

“Sometimes people love and care about you because you’re theirs. It’s not about deserving. It’s about belonging.”

“Guess we’re both paying attention.” “Maybe that’s the point: caring enough to notice.” 🫶

The writing itself is beautiful and thoughtful, filled with lines that linger long after you’ve finished reading. I highlighted so many lines and conversations that resonated with me.

“She paints the world for me in words when I ask her.” 🥹🥹🥹

I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book and can’t recommend it highly enough. If you’re looking for an emotionally rich romance that handles vulnerability with care and authenticity, this one is not to be missed. 👏

Thank you Love Notes and Kiira for the ARC. 🙌

I was pleasantly surprised with this new to me author and will be checking out other books from her. I really enjoyed this book and loved that even though it felt like there was anxiety and building tension, it actually did not have the miscommunication trope at all. I also really enjoyed that this was a slow burn, and that they build a friendship first, that then builds into a strong relationship. I love slow burns like that, no insta love over here!! While this book did not re invent the hockey romance trope, it did give a unique spin that I appreciated and kept me hooked. Defiantly worth the read!

i think this book had a really important insight to athlete rehabilitation, it was also interesting to read about ice cross as i’ve never even heard of it before!!

i can see the concept of this romance, but for me it just didn’t work and it felt icky. before i read the book, it says that their relationship doesn’t start until he is out of her care, whilst that is true, the thoughts that she has about him while he’s in the hospital (specifically when she has to give him a shower) felt gross. also the fact that for most of their relationship in this book he was still blind felt weird and like i shouldn’t be reading it.

the style that this book was written in was also confusing and hard to keep track of and i didn’t find myself reaching for it and struggled to finish which is why I’m giving it two stars :(

This medical romance pulled me in from the start and ran me through the emotional wringer. The medical and emotional aspects kept me turning page after page. I just couldn't get enough. Teddy's entire world shifter when he awoke in the hospital. The author did a wonderful job describing his panic and pain. The writing was exceptional, the characters were written beautifully and overall, the story was impactful.

As a new-to-me author, I really liked the book. I appreciated how fast-paced and emotionally intense it was. It wasn't your usual hockey romance and was really nicely done. I adored Teddy's openness and the manner in which he gradually revealed himself to Ivy. I had a great time with them, and their bond seemed sincere. I had a great time reading this part of the sport, and the plot was pretty well done. The humor was a wonderful interlude to the intensity. Ivy and Teddy made such a delightful combination. The two protagonists demonstrated a level of emotional knowledge and maturity that felt true and anchoring. I adored how they genuinely listened to each other, shared knowledge, and constantly strived to be the best possible versions of each other, not only for love, but also for mutual respect and encouragement. Additionally, they never truly faltered in the early phases of their love, regardless of how they were living away and battling with their separation! They truly clung to the thought that they were something significant and genuine!
This novel also made me reflect on how frequently we take something for granted and fail to see its true worth until we part with it.
All in all, I had a great time! Overall, this is a wonderfully charming and emotional narrative with wonderful protagonists who encourage each other and a relationship that genuinely makes you discover love. However, I simply believe that there should have been a bit more tension among the protagonists at first.

Thanks to Love Notes PR and the author for this ARC!!!

3/5 Spice 🔥

First 5 star read of 2026, where do I start. This book was so fun and enjoyable to read. This author did something that not a lot of authors are able to do this successfully. And that’s write a romance book where the romance is not the focal point of the story. And I know that sounds crazy but it’s actually so good.

The story starts with the brutal career ending injury of a star professional hockey player. The story does a great job of highlighting the importance of how that will define the character for the rest of the book.

And then the FMC being his nurse and a fan but more importantly his nurse. I love how the author took the importance of nurse/patient relationship seriously. And that when things got serious between them that she stepped away from his care team. It gets rid of that cliche of them being in love but also breaking the rules that’s are important.

I also like how the story is formatted around the MMC recovery. There was no significant time skips where he just was magically all recovered. It made the story real, falling in love in real life isn’t going to be the only thing occupying your time. You’re gonna have things to do, responsibilities to handle. This is greatly shown by the FMC to still go Ice Cross racing instead of staying with the MMC. It was very refreshing to see the FMC not giving up something dear to her for the development of the relationship. In most romance books that wouldn’t have happened and it almost always takes away from the female lead. Letting the FMC keep being the strong female Ice Cross racer that she is let her keep that important pieces of herself, instead of giving that up for love. Because at the end of the story they still loved one another without the sacrifice of each other’s dreams. And that’s how real love should be, building each other up from what they already have not taking away before you add.

Lastly I really appreciated how at the end of the story the MMC sight didn’t return back to 100%. While most readers would probably disagree and wish for that happy ending. Real life isn’t like that, and while yes like most people I read to escape real life. It’s really nice to read a book and it not be so far fetched from reality, like I can really imagine this happening to a couple somewhere in the world.

Okay but listen… if I could give this book six stars, I would. And yeah I’ve been saying that a lot—sue me for having the luck to find good books 🤷🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️💀

This book … 😮‍💨I kept bracing myself for something terrible to happen—Waiting for the drama, for the other shoe to drop, for the tragic misunderstanding spiral— and it just… didn’t. And somehow??? That made it hit harder 🫠💔🥹

It was refreshing in a way I didn’t know I needed.

Yes, it’s a hockey romance 🏒💙🫶🏼BUT it’s not the “we fell in love in 2 days and now I’ll die without you” kind (not that I don’t like those—I do). This is the this could actually happen to real people kind of book, that makes you stop and go…
“Okay but… what would I do if this were me?”
“How would my life change?”
“Would I survive this?”
And I LOVE books that make me reflect 🧠✨

Ivy and Theodore… I don’t even know where to start 😮‍💨
Watching Theodore deal with his injury, his identity, and the grief of losing the life he thought he’d have??? It was written so honestly it felt personal. Not dramatic or overdone, just… human. And it hurt in the best way 🥺💔

And Ivy 😭
Steady. Grounded. Supportive without trying to fix him. Without sugarcoating. Without promising everything will be okay when there’s no way to know that. And the fact that she doesn’t stop living her life for him?? She keeps chasing her dreams?? And Theodore supports her instead of clipping her wings???
EXCUSE ME??? 🫠🔥

They don’t lose themselves for each other. They don’t stop existing. They don’t drop their whole lives. They CHOOSE each other in a grown, evolved way. And that just… hit me straight in the chest 🫀😮‍💨

In more ways than one🫠😭🤯

This book didn’t explode my world. But it defenitly brought a lot of reflection, a lot of light, a lot of hope. And those are always the books that stay with me the longest 🥹✨

Five stars. No doubts. No overthinking. No “maybe a 4.5”.
Just ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you like hockey romance and want something real, thoughtful, and emotionally honest…
PLEASE read this. It’s so worth it. 🙏🏼💙📖

I’ve loved every one of Kiira’s books and this was no different. I love this little universe she’s created and how connected all of her books and characters are. There is such a sense of home in all of her books and it is so comforting! I can’t quite believe I’ve been reading her books since her debut, it was one of the very first arcs I ever read!! And now we’re here with her sixth book!!

Ivy and Teddy were PERFECT! They were such a good match. They of course met in unfortunate circumstances and the timing of her ice cross season was less than ideal…but somehow it still was right person right time?!!! They became so important to each other. Even when he was a patient, and they were keeping things professional, they were at ease with each other, Teddy felt safe with her. And even though he was quite literally her favorite hockey player!!!! She was able to see him for who he was under his bad boy persona, and that’s exactly what he needed!

And they were FUN! And SO SWEET!! And even when they were apart and struggling with the fact they were separated during the beginning stages of their relationship they never really wavered! They realized that they were something real and important and really held on to that!!

A lot of the story revolves around Teddy and his healing journey and I thought it was written so well. It wasn’t an easy journey, he struggled a lot. But he really worked so hard to make the best changes he could for himself!!

Thanks to KH Anastasia for the ARC one change for an honest review! As always, I am so happy to be here!!

This story has you hooked from the very first page. It is heartbreaking, passionate, and inspiring. It will have you feeling every feeling. I had to wipe more than a few tears while reading it. It truly takes you on an emotional roller coaster!

It's not very often that you have an MMC like Teddy. There are moments where you can physically feel the pain, panic, and struggle he is going through. What he goes through and the strength he finds are inspiring.
Ivy is a bada** in her own right. A nurse and a professional Ice Cross athlete. She is honest with herself about her wants and determined to get into the top 3 this next season.

Teddy and Ivy were an inspiring couple. They are supportive of each other, but each has or finds their own strengths. I loved their connection and how they truly listened and saw each other. Yes, falling for a patient is a little bit Grey's Anatomy, but it didn't feel over-dramatized or cliché. The author took it seriously and didn't necessarily romanticize it. When there were real feelings, Ivy stepped back and took herself off Teddy’s care team.

I really loved that the story didn't end with everything magically fixed. The MMC still struggles, but you still get a happily-ever-after. It made it more real. I know most would have wanted everything resolved and everything fixed, but that is not how real life is.

This book is a must-read sports romance for me. I highly recommend picking up a copy!

Ice Cross My Heart by K.H. Anastasia - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Ice Cross My Heart" is more than just a sports romance; it is a visceral, emotional journey that balances heartbreak with deep inspiration. The story is a "rollercoaster" that hooks you from the very first page, handling sensitive medical and emotional themes with a level of accuracy and maturity that is rare in the genre.
A Connection Built on Maturity
The relationship between Teddy and Ivy stands out for its emotional intelligence. Teddy, a hockey player navigating a difficult healing journey, and Ivy, a "badass" nurse and professional Ice Cross athlete, share a bond defined by mutual support. Their romance avoids common clichés; even when faced with the "nurse-patient" dynamic, the author maintains a grounded approach, Ivy even steps off Teddy's care team once feelings become real to maintain her professionalism.
The Beauty of Imperfect Healing
One of the most praised aspects of the book is its commitment to realism. The story doesn't end with everything "magically fixed." Teddy’s struggles with pain and panic are described as palpable, and his path to recovery is portrayed as a continuous effort. 🩷"life isn't about deserving, it's about belonging."🩷

Why You Should Read It📚💗

• Dual-athlete dynamics (Hockey and Ice Cross).
• Deeply emotional healing arcs.
• Healthy, supportive "right person, right time" romances.

I loved this book so much!! I really think this book had it all: good writing, good plot, and good characters with good chemistry. I found it really easy to connect with both our main characters. I loved that the FMC Ivy raced Ice Cross and was just an all around bada** both there and in her nursing career. Teddy went on a very significant and difficult journey throughout the book, and I think that even if readers couldn’t resonate with his specific injuries or path, they could find parts of their own journeys in his. Where this book shined the brightest for me was with the inclusion of brain injury/disability representation. I am someone who has also suffered brain injuries from ice hockey as well, so I could see myself and my own struggles with my injuries in him. I feel like concussions in other books are often depicted as being on the less serious end of the spectrum, so there’s not always a ton of discussion around concussions that lead to more severe outcomes like Teddy’s. I really thought K.H. Anastasia did a great job with bringing awareness to this topic in a way the aligned with the story and brought life to it as well. Overall, I loved this book for its depth, emotion, and representation, and would highly recommend it!!

Thank you to K.H. Anastasia and the Love Notes PR team for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review and feedback!!

What a read!! 5 stars from me!
I read this book as an ARC, the author was new for me. I dont normally read romance so I am very new to the genre but this was amazing.
It was a very cutesy read.

Teddy, the MMC, has an accident whilst in a game doing what he does best- playing professional ice hockey.
Ivy, a nurse on his care team, slowly begins to realise shes falling for him.
Whilst the pair navigate their own lives and prepare for their futures, they also both fall for each other and realise how much they need each other. It made me feel all the emotions going through, as if I was a part of the story. The sadness, the anger, the love!

There was minimal spice which was nice as some romance can be heavy on spice but this flowed just right.

Overall, a really easy and flowing book to read with a HEA ending.

A new to me author and I really enjoyed this one. Fast paced and full of emotions which I loved. I was rooting for Teddy after his accident playing hockey.

Ivy is his nurse and was exactly what he needed to keep him calm and focused on recovery. After spending endless days together at the hospital (insert a forbidden spicy scene in here 🤭🔥) they both realise they're growing attraction to one another.

Ivy's not just a nurse, she's also an Ice Cross Racer which just really added an extra layer to their story. They had to navigate rehab for Teddy and Ivy being away for a few months so fresh into their relationship.

This was… fine.

This ended up being a solid three-star read for me: enjoyable enough while I was in it, but nothing that really lingered afterward. The characters were perfectly okay — I didn’t dislike anyone — but I also don’t feel particularly attached to them, and I don’t think they’ll stick with me long-term.

The story itself moved along well and had its moments, but overall it felt pretty average. Not bad by any means, just not especially memorable or unique. If you’re looking for a light, easy read and don’t mind something a bit on the mediocre side, this might work for you. For me, it was a “read it, liked it fine, probably won’t think about it again” kind of book.

Instant 5 ⭐️ for this new to me author K.H. Anastasia. I was a little nervous going into it with a nurse/patient situationship but let me tell you, I was rooting for the rules to be broken immediately ;’). Teddy/Theodore was a playboy but after his accident he became such a lovable character and I just wanted the very best for him the whole time. That tragedy he went through was unspeakable but the come back was worth the tears! Ivy is a badass who has a soft core and just needed Teddy as much as he needed her. I felt the forbidden instant connection between the two. The chemistry and passion radiated off the pages. Spicy level 2.5 🌶️

This was my first book by this author, and I’ll definitely be reading more.
It was very well done and not your typical hockey romance. I loved Teddy’s vulnerability and the way he slowly opened up to Ivy. Their relationship felt genuine, and I really enjoyed them together.
The setting was also a standout for me. Ice cross is something I hadn’t seen before in books, and it was really well executed.
My only small drawbacks was the nickname, which felt a bit cringe for my taste, and wishing there had been a little more tension—and maybe even a bit more drama.
Overall, this was a really cute read and one I’d definitely recommend.

I received this book as an ARC. I have never read anything from this author but I absolutely loved this book!

Teddy suffers a life changing injury stopping him from the sport he loves. But he finds a new love in Ivy, his nurse.

I loved that this book was different. Although it was centred around Ice Hockey and Romance, I loved the addition of a nurse.

I absolutely LOVED this book and highly recommend you all read it!!

This was my first book by this author and it definitely will not be my last!

I absolutely loved our main characters Ivy and Teddy and their story just worked so well. This wasn’t a typical ice hockey romance and I really enjoyed that it took a different approach (from what I’ve read anyways).

The plot was executed so well and I really enjoyed seeing this aspect of the sport. It was really emotional but the banter was a great mix in between.

Overall, I really enjoyed this! I just think I would have liked a little more tension between the characters in the beginning.

Thank you Love Notes PR & Kiira for the ARC. This is set to release on Jan 26, 2026.

Teddy is a big time famous hockey player who suffers from a serious head injury sustained from a dirty hit on the ice. Ivy is his neuro nurse who also trains and competes in Ice cross downhill.

Immediately in the prologue I was in the verge of tears. So that put me in my feels. This book felt like I was reading what could be an epic 3-5 episode stint of Grey’s Anatomy.

Teddy’s character arc was beautiful to see. From his initial accident, to his emotions, to his acceptance, and his love. It was so good. I love a man who can openly discuss his feelings and share his fears and desires. Ivy kept herself guarded since she’s been hurt before. But when she finally opens up, I feel like it was the click they needed to finally get together. They continually supported each other and I’m here for it.

The book started off super strong for me but half way through, things started to drag for me. The pacing was off. And I ended up skimming through a lot closer to the end. For two people who were very forthcoming and open about their thoughts and feelings in the early pages of the book, they sure seemed to have forgotten how to communicate when they were in different time zones for a while there. I’m also disappointed that there wasn’t a big reveal or chapter dedicated to the events immediately after a certain procedure.

Otherwise I thought this book was super cute. And I am now intrigued and have been introduced to another sport. *cue Google search for all things ice cross-* & me being a big Grey’s Anatomy fan… I definitely had fun with this one.

This was such an emotional read and I loved every minute of it!
This ice hockey romance is completely different from other romances in that genre: the female main character knows what she wants, is compassionate but follows her own dreams and ice hockey has a purpose and isn't just a setting for hot guys to show their testosteron level.
The inner thoughts were so deep and relatable, the characters well-drawn and the message came across loud and clear: nothing is guaranteed.
This is my first book by this author, but definitely not my last!

ARC read - Thanks to Love Notes PR and K.H. Anastasia for the opportunity.

It is so new to me to read a romance with a blind character. And it is interesting how it is handled, raising awareness about blindness, how it can occur, how it can affect someone’s life. I absolutely adored the book (I read it in two days, that should say something!) and still am a little side because of how he was never able to fully see her ):
Anyway, it was sweet and well written, once again raising awareness and putting us in a world most people know nothing about. It’s the first time I’ve read a book taking 80% place in a hospital. It’s truly a breath of fresh air. Loved it and I will definitely read more of the author!

I was super fortunate to be selected as an ARC reader for this book, and I’m so glad I was! I loved this take on a sport romance. This made me laugh, cry and smile from ear to ear, it captured all the elements of a sports romance we love with added coziness and depth.

Ivy is the strong female protagonist we all love, inspiring, supportive while being a bad ass sports star and nurse. Teddy gives us the hot sport star we want, with the charm and care all girls dream of. While his story is sad, it’s a reminder that with courage and perseverance life does in fact continue.

This novel was a fascinating combination of medical and sports settings, with both main characters part of both universes. Teddy is a star hockey player who suffers a major injury and crosses paths with Ivy, who is one of the nurses assigned to his care. She is an incredible character; besides being a caring, skilled, and well-grounded nurse, she is an Ice Cross athlete. She certainly brings all her understanding of what it means to be a top level athlete to understanding and caring for Teddy. I enjoyed watching the various moments and kinds of growth in this story: Teddy and Ivy's attraction, the beginning of their relationship, his recovery, her advancement in Ice Cross - certainly never a dull moment! Even though there are plenty of  intense, serious moments, Ms. Anastasia also includes charming banter and outstanding spicy moments. This is the first book I have read by this author, and I look forward to reading more - she has a wonderful imagination and a skillful way of expressing it.
I was given an ARC and volunteered to write a review.

The book started very strong—I honestly loved the first 50% or so. The overall premise was great, refreshing, offering a different angle on sports romance, and I really appreciated that both main characters are athletes. The post-trauma and healing arc also began with a lot of promise. Unfortunately, somewhere around the midpoint, the story seemed to lose focus and coherence.

Once the characters acknowledged their feelings and got together, several inconsistencies began to stand out and pulled me out of the story.

Spoilers ahead:

Teddy’s recovery arc felt underdeveloped. The idea that he essentially sat quietly in his room in complete darkness for weeks didn’t feel emotionally believable, especially given the gravity of his trauma. The story missed a major opportunity to explore his psychological and emotional recovery in a more meaningful way.

Their full physical relationship while Teddy is recovering from a brain injury also felt off—particularly with Ivy being a medical professional. It didn’t align with the level of caution or awareness one would expect.

The three-month separation was out of character, irrational and mostly unbelievable. In this day and age, the idea that they couldn’t stay in touch at all felt unrealistic—especially once Ivy was back in North America. Her apparent lack of thought about Teddy, his recovery, or even visiting him after her final race felt emotionally disconnected.

Teddy stepping away from the NHL was confusing and poorly executed. He is almost completely blind, yet both he and the team keep framing his return as a possibility “we’ll wait,” “are you sure?” which made little sense. A conversation about staying with the organization in a different capacity would have felt far more realistic, but the way this was handled was jarring.

After the final surgery, Teddy is still largely blind, with only minimal vision, yet the narrative portrays him as simply moving on with life without any real adjustments. This minimized the long-term impact of his disability in a way that felt unrealistic.

Overall, the premise of the book was wonderful, but the execution lacked emotional depth and realistic continuity. Many of these issues could have been addressed with tighter editing and fuller development of key moments.

The voice notes were a highlight, loved them, but even there, the story missed the chance to have Ivy physically show up when it mattered most 🤷🏼‍♀️

Review of advance copy received from Author

Having read the blurb, I knew what to expect, but I was surprised to discover the emotional pull it had on me.

The author’s use of a transcript of a live radio broadcast of an ice hockey game captured my attention straight away. All I wanted to know was if our MMC, Theodore ‘Teddy’ Seaborn, was going to be okay after consecutive hits to the head brought him to the hospital.

Ivy Campbell is a neurology nurse assigned to Teddy's care. She is the ultimate professional, though deep down she is losing it, as Teddy was her NHL teen crush, and now a patient in her care feels weird to her. She has to remind herself to remain clinically detached from the chiselled man that was now in her care.

The realism of the medical conditions and the emotions one feels after an accident made the book a gratifying yet heartbreaking read. In some instances, I wanted to take away Teddy’s pain and anger of not being able to see. Ivy was his saviour, knowing the emotions he was going through and providing him with the truth and understanding of his situation.

They had an ease with each other, even while Ivy didn’t divulge anything about her personal life to begin with, because it was all about Teddy’s recovery and making him comfortable. Ivy soon discovers Teddy wants pancakes with maple syrup and a pat of butter, so she sneaks a serving during her off time. This is when everything changes between them. They become close, and Ivy sees a side of Teddy she likes. She lets him in by telling Teddy that her family are fans of his NHL team, The Woodpeckers and that she competes in the Ice Cross World Circuit with her two brothers.

With that closeness, there are moments Teddy acts out and takes out his anger on Ivy. To her credit, Ivy understands this, but tells him she doesn’t appreciate being disrespected. From this point, they become vulnerable to their feelings.

I found this book emotional to read, especially when Teddy is struggling so much, fearing his playing life is over, and his future is unknown. I found the characters complement each other well, and their support of one another grabs at my heart.

I am so thankful to the author for writing this book, illuminating me to the medical condition of Terson’s syndrome and to the world of Ice Cross, a sport I didn’t know existed.

Where have I been, missing out on K.H. Anastasia books? I’ve seen the light now and won’t be looking away.

This was a beautifully crafted, character-driven story, & I adored every second of it. I loved how refreshing this take on a sports romance was. It wasn’t about the glitz and glam of the sports and the off-field shenanigans. Instead, we got to dive into the raw, day-to-day reality of recovery after a traumatic sports injury. The brutal rehabilitation process. The setbacks. The frustration. The doubts. The anger. The moments of surrender & scariness. But right alongside, there was perseverance, courage, quiet strength, hope, the power of having the right people in your corner, and a budding romance in a midst of an unfortunate situation. It felt honest & unfiltered in the best way.

My heart truly went out to Teddy. Watching him try to navigate his new reality, questioning who he is without hockey, grappling with fear, identity loss, & constant physical pain was emotional, & well done. Add in the exhausting recovery process and the pressure of keeping up with life and relationships when everything feels uncertain. How could you not?

It was no shock that Ivy was the one for him. A fierce Ice Cross badass who pushes herself relentlessly toward her dreams, holds herself to high standards, yet still carries such a gentle, nurturing, caring heart. She was Teddy’s safe place when things unraveled, his steady support, his caretaker & the one person who refused to let him spiral into his own BS. I loved her strength just as much as her softness.

Their dynamics was fun and grounded. The way their relationship unfolded: how it began, reached a turning point, paused when needed, and grew, felt thoughtful and authentic. We got to see them together and apart, each taking the time to focus on themselves before finding their way forward. It made everything feel earned.

At its core, this story is a gentle reminder that life doesn’t always follow the plan we imagined and that can be painful. But a different path doesn’t mean a lesser one; it just means your story is unfolding in ways you couldn’t see at the start and learning to move forward is a victory.

Curious to see where we go next with the author.

Huge thank you to Love Notes PR for the ARC!
