She just jilted my teammate at the altar and I helped her escape. We don’t get along, but I’ll still keep her safe … and pray she never learns how I really feel about her.

Summer

I can’t marry him.

I have no good reason to jilt my hockey player fiancé, except that the closer we get to the big day, the more I feel myself shrinking to a hollow shell. Two minutes after I slip into the church bathroom to calm my pre-wedding jitters, I jump out the window to make my escape …

… and land on Hatch Kershaw, my fiancé’s teammate on the Chicago Rebels.

This guy has always hated me for reasons I can’t fathom. Half the time he looks right through me, like I’m no better than the ice shavings on his skate blades. The other half? That brooding green gaze strips me bare and sees right into my soul.

Neither option is good for me, so I really shouldn’t want his help … should I?

Hatch

The bride hit me like a ton of bricks.

The last thing I expected was for my teammate’s bride to ask for my help in fleeing her wedding. Make that the second last—even more unexpected is that I said “yes.” Before I know it, I’ve driven her to my family’s vacation home because I’m a nice guy and she needs to catch her breath.

Only now, I can’t breathe around her.

Summer Landry and I have never hit it off, so why the hell am I going along with this madness? Every stolen glance and accidental touch tell me she’s off-limits, while each torturous second with her in our lakeside hideaway has me questioning everything I thought I knew about who she is and what she’s hiding.

No one can know what I did—not my teammate, not my family, not the media—or all hell will break loose. Most of all, Summer can never know why I dislike her so much.

Because if she did, I might not recover.

I adore a runaway bride story! Rebel Bride not only has a runway, but lots of forced proximity, and even hockey too. Kate Meader’s latest series is a perfect example of how to explore next generation characters while creating a fresh, standalone story.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Hatch Kershaw is at his least favorite teammate’s wedding when he spies the bride Summer climbing out a window. He usually keeps his distance from her, but he can’t resist helping someone who is clearly in need. Summer doesn’t regret not getting married, but wishes she’d called things off sooner. What she can’t figure out is why Hatch is being so nice to her, and whisking her off to his family’s vacation house to regroup. As the pair spends more time together though, it becomes clear that they have a connection they’d both tried to ignore.

I adore the chemistry between Hatch and Summer. Even when he’s trying to avoid her, it’s clear that they get under each other’s skin. Forced proximity is always a favorite of mine, and their time hiding away after Summer’s wedding escape is fantastic. It forces them to be vulnerable with each other, even when it’s the last thing either of them wants to do. Of course, the other huge plus is spending more time with the entire Kershaw family and hanging out in the Rebels hockey world.

Rebel Bride is a delightful hockey romance with a runaway bride, forced proximity, and amazing family moments. Kate Meader’s hockey world is one I love coming back to book after book, and I’m waiting on the edge of my seat for the next installment.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Okay, I read this in one sitting because it was just too good! Old fans of the Rebels and potential new fans, you totally want to read this book.

I liked both Hatch and Summer from before, though I was very baffled by Hatch's behaviour... Everything made sense now! I absolutely loved their relationship, the ups and downs, the talk of cheese (!) and hockey stats. Overall, I am so happy Summer dodged a bullet when she became a runaway bride. Hatch was such a marshmallow from the start, even when he had his moments of dickish behaviour. He always tried to take care of Summer, even when it was not actually what she had in mind.

All in all, it was a solid addition to the series, one that I know I will enjoy rereading.

Tropes:
-hockey romance
-it's always been her
-runaway bride
-under one roof
-banter and spice
-forced proximity
-teammate's ex
-enemies to lovers

Rebel Bride is book two in the Chicago Players series and is Hatch and Summer's story.

Summer runs on her wedding day and who helps her? Hatch. He has been rude to her for years but that was to hide his true feelings. When these two spend time together, will feelings emerge?

I thought this was a nice read with good banter and spice. It is swoony and emotional and keeps you into the pages from beginning to end. The characters are well written and don't leave you wanting more. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Releasing October 21, 2025. I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

The second book in the new Chicago Rebel/Rookie Rebel spinoff dives into the next generation of hockey stars and their messy, heart-tugging romances. This one follows Hatch Kershaw, son of the legendary Theo Kershaw. Theo’s chasing one last shot at the Stanley Cup, and when Hatch gets traded to his dad’s team, the two finally share the ice.

The story picks up in the postseason at a teammate’s wedding Hatch wants nothing to do with until he catches the bride climbing out a bathroom window. One wild rescue later, he’s helping her escape to his family’s cabin. Cue the forced proximity, forbidden chemistry, and plenty of heat.

This book hits all the good tropes - runaway bride, teammate’s ex, forced proximity and delivers them with heart, humour, and cameos galore.

I couldn’t quite give it a full five stars as the pacing dipped a bit in the middle and a few threads felt unfinished but it was still such a fun, bantery, and slightly cheesy (in the best way) read. Can’t wait for the next book, the teaser at the end was WILD!

All the tropes we love wrapped into one book. I enjoyed this story and the characters. It was fun to get little glimpses from past characters we grew to love in other series. Kate Meader does hockey romances well.

Read if you like: sports romance · runaway bride · grumpy/sunshine · forced proximity · slow burn with heart · teammates-to-lovers

📚 Summer Landry has everything—except the certainty she’s marrying the right man. Seconds before saying “I do,” she bolts from her wedding and quite literally lands on Hatch Kershaw, her fiancé’s hockey teammate and the last man she’d expect to help her escape. What starts as damage control turns into days spent together in secret, where sharp words, buried truths, and unexpected chemistry threaten to unravel both of them.

🏒 Hatch is the kind of hero who hides his heart behind sarcasm and shadows. He’s loyal to a fault, infuriatingly protective, and a total goner where Summer is concerned—even if he refuses to admit it. Summer, on the other hand, is vibrant, funny, and ready to take back her voice after years of playing it safe. Together they burn slow and bright, their tension thick enough to melt the ice at the rink.

💞 Rebel Bride hits that perfect mix of humor, heart, and heat that Kate Meader does so well. There’s witty banter, emotional growth, and that delicious “we shouldn’t, but we absolutely will” energy that makes every page addictive. The chemistry between Summer and Hatch crackles, and watching them let down their walls is as satisfying as a winning goal in overtime.

👧 Fans of the Chicago Rebels world will love revisiting familiar faces and locker-room chaos. It feels like coming home to a team that’s all grit, loyalty, and found family.

✍️ Meader’s writing is sharp and full of charm. She balances playful scenes with vulnerable moments that make you root for these two stubborn hearts.

🌟 Rebel Bride is a runaway-bride romance with substance—sweet, sexy, and layered with just enough angst to make you feel it. A solid addition to the Rebels universe and a perfect pick for fans of heartfelt sports romance.

📲 QOTD: Would you keep reading a series for the team camaraderie as much as the romance? What’s your favorite runaway bride or forced proximity trope read?

"Hook, line, and Summer."
If you’ve been reading Kate Meader, you’ll recognize Hatch Kershaw as the son of the infamous Theo, the one with the dinosaur underwear. I was transported back to when I first read his book, and damn, I missed the Rebels and the whole family!

"He’s not good enough for you. You need a guy who knows your worth. Who will worship the ground beneath your feet and the air above your head."
Hatch is fully grown-up now and a hockey player in his own right. He just got transferred to the Rebels to play with his dad in what is to be his last year as a player.
Which is not easy because it means seeing her again. Summer. The one he’s wanted since the first time he saw her. The one who’s dating one of his teammates and is absolutely off-limits.
But yes, he’s so gone for this girl… And I loved it.

"I didn’t have to drive her out of that church parking lot. I didn’t have to squire her all the way to Saugatuck. And I certainly didn’t have to drive to the station to beg her to stay. But I did."
It only gets worse when his teammate asks her to marry him and she says yes. It’s torture for Hatch. And when he’s asked to be part of the wedding party, he can’t really say no, even though he and the fiancé don’t really get along.
But then… Summer decides to make a run for it. She doesn’t want to get married (I don’t blame her, the guy is a douche!). And the first person she sees while she’s trying to escape is Hatch.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Like what?"
"Like you can’t figure me out."

He knows he shouldn’t, but she needs help. So he takes her to his family home outside the city. And it’s there that they get closer and they get to know each other. Because in an effort to stay away from her, Hatch gave her the impression he really dislikes her. And Summer is not really who she seems to be either.

"We can’t, Hatch."
"I know, Sunshine. I know."

I won’t lie and say the days they spend together are perfect. There’s a lot they don’t know about each other, which leads to some harsh words being exchanged. But underneath all that is the kind of chemistry you can’t fake. And even though they shouldn’t, especially now that she’s become a famous runaway bride, there’s no way to stop it.

"We can’t pretend nothing happened, Sunshine."
"Oh, yes, we can. I would have thought you’d be thrilled for me to be out of your hair. I ruined your vacation."
"Vacations are all about sex, sun, and more sex. You’re denying me two out of three."

Their one night together only makes Hatch more aware that she’s the one. Until she leaves. One thing about Summer is that she’s done taking handouts. She wants to be in control of her life. She wants a career. And she’s afraid that being back in a relationship with a hockey player—even though Hatch is pretty perfect—will stop that from happening.

"You need time to think. To figure out your game plan. Let me tell you mine. You. You’re my end game here."
The best thing about Hatch, though? He knows what he wants, and he doesn’t mind waiting for her, even if it’s breaking him. He also knows he has to tear down her walls and show her he loves her just the way she is.

"So many times over the last couple of months, I’ve looked up at that moon and wondered if you were watching it, too."
Was Hatch my favorite part of this book? Absolutely. But the found family vibes were so, so good. I loved how Hatch was the perfect mix of hot and swoony and would do it all for his girl. And I definitely loved watching Summer find her people and realize she’s not only enough—she’s everything.

"I want to travel that road with you, not because I think you can’t manage by yourself, but because I think the path sometimes has potholes and rocks. I want to fill those gaps and kick those rocks out of the way for you."
This book was fun and cute, sweet and heartwarming, and just what I needed. Sometimes the man you’re supposed to be with is not the one at the altar but the one who breaks your fall when you climb out of a church bathroom window.
The same one who sends you cheese gifts :)

As I read this book, I couldn't help but think of Hockey Wife, the first book I received an ARC copy of and that started my love of ARC reading.

Rebel Bride was amazing and I will definitely be adding it to my permanent collection of physical books, or my trophy bookshelf.

After reading several of the Chicago Rebels books I am quite familiar with Hatch and his origin story. As he grew throughout the books we watched him become a NHLer to continue the legacy, even though he played a different position. You could tell that his father's legacy made him anxious. The additional media scrutiny left doubts and questions about not only his game play but his role in the Rebels organization. As much as he loved playing with his dad, he hated it too. Without his father's retirement decision, Hatch was considering what was next for himself and whether he would renew his contract.

With definite plans to go to the lake for some R&R, Hatch needed to stand up for the teammate he hated most. He didn't want to be at the wedding but agreed when asked to prevent chaos and drama for the team. Little did he know while waiting outside for the event to start, the bride would land on him, escaping through a window. The bride, Summer asked him to help her leave. He agreed and took her to tge lake so she could figure out her dilemma. Hatch didn't like Summer and Dash, as a couple he hated being anywhere near then and avoided an interactions when possible. He hated working with Summer while she was with Dash. Did he really hate her or did he hate that she was his teammate's girl?

Summer had been working for the Rebels for quite some time and loved her job. She wanted to do more but after dating Dash, off and on, for years she wanted to please him and gave up her job to become his wife. He felt that she needed to be a hockey wife and socialite living off his wealth more than she needed to work. He wanted her dependent on him. After overhearing some things his mother said, Summer knew she would never be what Dash wanted and would never fit into the mold his mother felt was appropriate for her son. Summer made the wise decision to run. She regretted hurting Dash but she knew that they were not right for each other.

Summer prided herself for the woman she became after escaping from her hometown. She learned so many new skills and embraced the things she loved. She loved hockey and statistics. She wanted to do more than be an assistant and often helped others with her knowledge. After she called off her wedding she was determined to make her own way and to never be dependent on a man again. She felt guilty for accepting Hatch and the Kershaw's help. Even though they were her friends, she didn't take their friendship or generosity forgranted.

During the time at the lake, Hatch and Summer got to know each other better and the real reason behind Hatch's coldness to Summer was revealed. They became friends and possibly more. After returning to Chicago, Summer was determined to keep a distance to protect Hatch and prevent team drama but you know what they say about good intentions? Is staying apart really for the best or will temporary hurts lead to something exquisite? Summer must decide what is truly important to her and her future and who she sees as part of that future. We all know, if we gave read previous books in these interconnected series, with whom Hatch's heart lies.

Hatch and Summer are perfect for each other, flaws and all. They see the best in each other and they want the best for each other. That could be their biggest strength or their greatest downfall. Whatever life throws their way if they trust each other and support each other they could be a power couple securing the Kershaw legacy for years to come.

Thank you Kate Meader and The Author Agency for the ARC! Now to binge the Rebels series again.

Cold feet, a backwoods alter-ego, and a terrible almost mother in law drives Summer - Shelby Mae- to yeet herself out a bathroom window only to make a soft landing on our grumpy golden retriever - Hatch. He's not a dog, rather a guy with a crush who also is crushed by our skeleton bride. She's not a skeleton, just severely underweight because her toxic fiancé and his mother's diet plan.

Hatch doesn't want to be there, because Dash is awful - as you would expect from anyone named "Dash" would be. He takes no accountability for things that happen to him. He couldn't be the cause of his jilting. He's the victim. Considering he had to force people to be in his wedding party because he's so awful his friends didn't want to stand up for him, methinks he probably is at least, part of the problem, but I digress. Hatch is taking a break from the circus and has a petite bride in Jimmy Choo's drop on his person like the House in the Wizard of Oz.

Oz

She then asks him to be he knight in shining tuxedo and spirit her far far away from the church - and he does, all the way to Saugatuck, Michigan. To be fair, she didn't give him any stipulations on where she wanted to be whisked away to. Anyway, they become friends. She thought he hated her, he crushed on her for years. Turns out, maybe she and Shelby Mae may have just wasted five years of their life. Also, Shelby Mae was my favorite part of this book. She was sassy and funny. Also, she had the best life advice with a side of snark.
"I could see myself getting shafted again because my boyfriend's job was more important than mine.
You don't even have a job, Summer.
Agh, Shelby Mae, I thought you were asleep in your coffin"

Anyway, this girl is from Mississippi and is running from her past toward a future where she don't need a man and she just lost her way for a bit due to Dash. Obviously, being perfect, Hatch doesn't want her to ditch her dreams. But they can't because Dash is his teammate. Though, let's be real, he doesn't care about that. Anyway, there's the whole will they, won't they, and we come to a conclusion at some point, but the story is sweet. His family is great. There's a bit of conflict I half expected to come from things, but doesn't. However, I believed the love story. There was sort of a third act break up, but were they ever really together? IDK, it was sweet, they had chemistry. I was fully invested in the story and the spice started early. I don't have a whole lot of criticism. The only thing that stood up was the random Brita filter references. There were like 4 in the book. It seemed like a lot. But I guess they weren't fans of Dasani -because they're not criminals. Dash probably liked Dasani. I'm rambling.

Should you read this? Yeah, it's a fun sports ball book where she doesn't get forced to wear his jersey. He protects her interests and she's rehabilitated from her horrible past relationship. I enjoyed this one. Read it.

Kate Meader takes her readers on a roller coaster ride in her latest release Rebel Bride (releasing 10/21/25); the spin-off of a spin-off series, this book features Hatch Kershaw the son of Theo and Elle Kershaw (Superglutes) and Summer Landry, who worked in the front office before running out on her wedding to Dash, one of Hatch’s teammates. This book was crazy, fun, messy, sweet, sexy, and emotional making it an excellent read.

Hatch is coming off his first year with the Chicago Rebels, a move he made to play with his dad on what was planned as Theo’s last year. They missed the Stanley Cup in the 7th game and now Theo’s plans are up in the air and Hatch is also looking at making a move and not just because he’s tired of being compared to his dad even when they don’t play the same positions. Being a stand in groomsman for his teammate Dash, someone he really does not like especially since he’s marrying Summer, a woman that captured Hatch’s attention years ago at a Rebel’s Christmas party, was not in Hatch’s plans but even he knows no matter how you feel about a teammate you do things even if you don’t want to. What he doesn’t expect as he’s getting a bit of air before the ceremony is to be flattened when Summer drops out of a bathroom window and asks him for help getting her out of there. So begins the story of Summer and Hatch.

I love the way this book began and even more I loved that Hatch had an infatuation with Summer that she knew nothing about. In fact she believes that at some point she did something to offend Hatch because he’s a bit hostile towards her. She really can’t believe he helped her and she can’t help notice how kind he can be when he’s not acting like he hates her. At the Kershaw summer home, Hatch begins to realize that there’s more to Summer than meets the eye and most of all that she’s a survivor and she left the wedding when she realized she was getting into a situation she had no say in. Summer begins to realize that Hatch doesn’t hate her at all. They both know acting on their attraction is a really bad idea, but the more they learn about one another, the more they can’t see to gravitate towards one another.

There were so many layers to this story, something I always appreciate about Kate Meader’s books and she crafted this one very carefully. Summer realized she wanted a career with a hockey team and she wasn’t willing to give up her dreams for the dreams of a man even when she had very strong feelings for Hatch and Hatch…damn that man; he wanted to be Summer’s hero, to solve her problems, to make her happy and to be there for her every step of the way. I appreciate that there wasn’t a quick, easy solution that it took some time and in the end they both got what they wanted and the happily ever after they both deserved.

The cast of secondary characters in this book was vast and I loved every moment spent in their company; they were there to support both Summer and Hatch in a variety of ways. Some of the OG Rebels also made an appearance and now I want to go back to the beginning (Chicago Players) and start a re-read. I’m really looking forward to the rest of this series.

PS – If they have an accidental pregnancy after the shower scene, I wonder if the baby’s conception story will become as big a deal as Hatch’s is and better yet, what will the nickname be? 

I absolutely loved Hatch and Summer's story! Their future connection was hinted at in Holly Jolly Rebel , and we of course had to wait for (his sister) Addy and Lars' story, but it was worth it!

Hatch, the eldest son of hockey legend Theo Kershaw ( Instacrush ) just joined his dad on the ice for (maybe?) his last season--and it didn't go as well for him as he'd hoped. Is he too in his head? Lost in his famous dad's shadow? Or is it something else? When he (literally) catches his teammate's runaway bride as she jumps out the bathroom window, what else can he do but take her to his family's vacation place to hideaway?

I mean--he had to, amiright? ;)

I loved watching Hatch and Summer get close in the ten days they were together in the mountains--she opening up about her past, he admitting to his insecurities about hockey after the year he just had--and might have been even more upset than Hatch was when she left to go back to Chicago. (Maybe not, but it was close, for sure.) Their will-they-won't-they back in the real world was delicious (and watching all of the Kershaws figure it out one by one was hilarious), and again, I was practically despondent when it looked like they weren't going to make it.

Unlike Hatch, though, I *did* know they would ultimately, because romance novel. So there's that, at least. ;)

Not only did Hatch and Summer have fabulous chemistry and great banter, but I also thoroughly enjoyed seeing them interact with all of the other Rebels and their assorted people throughout the story, and OMG are we left with a major teaser about the next book ( Top Shelf Stud )--which cannot come out soon enough to suit me.

Technically, Rebel Bride could be read as a standalone, but why do that to yourself? At the very least, read the previous Chicago Player novella and book--better yet, read the Rookie Rebels first. I won't even deter you from starting with Chicago Rebels if you haven't read those yet, because OMG is it ever worth it to start at the beginning.

And since we're all waiting (patiently!) for Jason's book, it'll give you something to read in the meantime ;)

Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A

REBEL BRIDE is the second instalment in Kate Meader’s contemporary adult CHICAGO PLAYERS erotic, hockey romance series focusing on retired hockey player Theo Kershaw’s progeny, the next generation of Chicago Rebel hockey players. This is hockey player Hatch Kershaw, and PA Summer Landry’s story line. REBEL BRIDE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Hatch and Summer) REBEL BRIDE follows the almost wedding that wasn’t. Approximately five years earlier Hatch Kershaw fell in love with Summer Landry but life had a way of spiralling out of control. Fast forward to present day, Summer is about to marry Hatch’s teammate and hotel heir Dash Carter but our heroine is unable to commit and with the help of Hatch Kershaw becomes a runaway bride. Hiding out in the Kershaw family cabin in Michigan, Summer and Hatch will come to a detente in their years long battle, a battle of which Summer is wholly unaware until our heroine decides it is time to face the truth, and returns home only to discover there is nothing to come home to.

The world building focuses on the revelation of truths. Summer is not whom she claims to be, and in this, she struggles to fit in, and feels like a fraud. The Kershaw hockey dynasty is growing, and the Rebels continue to welcome each successive generation but Hatch is troubled by the comparisons to his father, and must come to a decision about his future.

The relationship between Hatch and Summer begins acrimoniously as our couple keep their distance . Summer does not understand Hatch’s anger and rebukes but days spent together, hiding in Michigan forces Hatch to open his heart to a woman who recently belonged to someone else. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of familiar, colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including the return of Hatch’s immediate family and siblings. We are introduced to Summer’s fiance, and Hatch’s teammate Dash Carter, as well as several cameos from friends, front office personnel and Michigan locals.

REBEL BRIDE is a story of secrets and lies, family and friendships, relationships and love. The character driven premise is inviting, edgy and heartwarming; the romance is seductive; the characters are determined and charismatic.

📚: Rebel Bride by Kate Meader

Tropes:
👉 Slow Burn
👉 Forbidden
👉 Teammate’s Ex

TWs 😟: Emotionally abusive ex-fiance

Main Takeaway 🏹: Ex-Fiancé’s teammate with a lot of pining!

Synopsis 📜: She’s just jilted my teammate at the altar and I’m the one who helped her escape. We never hit it off, but I’ll still keep her safe … and pray she never learns how I really feel about her.
Half the time he looks right through me, like I’m no better than the ice shavings on his skate blade.
Because if she did, I might never recover.

Personal Thoughts 🤔: This one took me some time to get into but the more I got to know Summer, the more I loved her and Hatch together! Summer’s backstory is heartbreaking and learning about Shelby Mae along with Hatch was a fun experience! These two are so good for each other and help each other grow into the best versions of themselves.

It's my first book by this author, and I immediately fell in love with the Kershaws and extended family. I love their bonds, banter, and dynamics.
Hatch and Summer's story is a sweet and spicy hockey romance that I read in one sitting. The plot is very well written, emotional, humorous, and touching, and features the following tropes:

- Sports romance
- Hockey romance
- Enemies to lovers
- Runaway Bride
- Damsel in distress
- Off-limits
- Teammate‘s ex
- Close proximity
- Secret crush
- It’s always been you
- Found family

Hatch and Summer are endearing protagonists. He is a swoonworthy and protective golden retriever hero, and Summer is a troubled but strong heroine who becomes more and more self-determined throughout the story. I enjoyed their banter and bickering and the chemistry between them from the start, but what I liked best was their secluded time together, where they became friends, protected each other, and opened up to each other.
I also found her dialogues with her inner alter ego amusing and, as already mentioned, the Kershaws and the other supporting characters are a hit, always making you laugh.

On her wedding day, Summer aka Shelby Mae Landry, realizes that she cannot marry her fiancé, billionaire and professional hockey player Dash. For years, she has built a new life for herself, only to then subordinate her needs to his. As she flees the church, she receives help from Hatch Kershaw, of all people, who has been hostile and cold toward her from the start. Hatch takes her to his family's summer house, where she can hide from the scandal.
Pro Hockey player Hatch has been in love with Summer since the moment he met her, which is why he always successfully kept her at a distance. Except for last season, when he transferred to the Rebels for one last season together with his father to make him happy, and he was forced to watch Summer and Dash together. Even now, as his teammate's ex, she is off-limits to him.
The two grow closer, but Summer never wants to get involved with a hockey player again and give up her dreams for others...

Overall, a delightful hockey romance worth reading, with heart, humor, and heat, which I am happy to recommend!

I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.

Summer Landry has a problem, she is at the church about to be married and it's more than just last minute jitters telling her something isn't right. She can't stand her soon to be mother-in-law, her groom isn't the guy she thought he was, and the idea of being stuck in a marriage without love is more than a little unsettling. Her only option is to escape before the nuptials begin, then she spies a window and it's as if someone from above is telling her to run as fast as she can. So she does... into the arms of an unlikely hero.

The pages of Rebel Bride will take you into the lives of two people who have despised each other, for unknown reasons, for a while now. Well, actually Hatch doesn't necessarily despise Summer, more like he thinks a girl that wants to marry his horrible teammate Dash has got to be just as horrible too. But actually that's not the case at all. Summer is nothing like the woman that Hatch's mind has designed her to be, she's just a girl that got herself tangled up with the wrong guy and now she is realizing that if she doesn't run, she's about to find herself tangled up with the jerk and his wicked mother for the rest of her life.

When she falls into his arms and he sees the desperation on her face he knows the girl needs help, and for some unknown reason he offers to be her knight in shining armor. He could have just walked away, but he was raised better than that... and then there is the issue that he has a secret crush on her, and that's the part that is going to probably get him into trouble! Keeping his feelings under wraps and spending time with her secluded away on his family's vacation home is going to be tricky...

From beginning to end this one had me entranced, the story line was so captivating and the characters so well drawn that they felt real. They drew me instantly and had me never wanting to leave them! If you are a sports romance lover than this is the book for you... Hatch and Summer will steal every bit of your heart. Highly recommend!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.

⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️/ ️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Kate Meader knows how to write next gen stories that still hold their own and make for great reading. Book 2 in her Chicago Players series combines the best parts of her Rebels series with new and exciting characters and storylines that make you swoon. The drama starts soon with our runaway bride and the heat and tension continue from there. I adore the dynamic between our two MCs and as their story unfolded the chemistry that is felt between them is undeniable.

Summer and Hatch have had a dicey relationship. Hatch always seems rude to Summer every time she is near him. As the girlfriend of one of his teammates they are around each other a lot. Summer isn’t sure of the reason, but takes it in stride. Until she sees a different side of him when she flees her wedding seconds before she says “I do”. When Hatch provides much needed assistance and a place to escape to, she discovers there is so much more to him than she ever knew.

Hatch has learned to hide his feelings behind sarcasm and quick wit. When he sees Summer in trouble, he can’t help but jump to help her. Unknown to anyone, he has a soft spot for her and wants to make sure she is safe and happy. When he takes her away from everything, he can’t help but let a lot of the secrets he has kept buried from coming up. As they spend more and more time, his feelings become harder and harder to stay secret and the slow burn becomes a rabid flame.

Summer and Hatch were so fun to read and watch become closer. The entire story is them teetering between past behaviors and present feelings. I couldn’t get enough of the banter, locker room shenanigans, and the found family in this story. I loved seeing old faces from the Rebels series, while getting to know new characters on the Players team. This series has been a delight to read thus far and I can’t wait to see who is next in finding love.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

✨️✨️ ARC Review ✨️✨

This was a deliciously chaotic mix of romantic tension, emotional reckoning and slow-burn attraction, all wrapped in a hockey romance bow. It is the second book in the Next Gen of the Chicago Rebels world, offering a fantastic blend of found family, sports camaraderie and heartfelt steam. And, of course, plenty of Superglutes action!

The story kicks off with a scene that’s impossible to resist: a runaway bride quite literally crashes into her fiancé’s teammate, setting off a chain of events that changes both their lives completely. Summer, the runaway in question, isn’t simply the fickle, flighty gold digger some have mistaken her for. She’s a woman realising, far too late, that she has been losing herself in a relationship that looks perfect from the outside but feels hollow within. Meader gives her depth and agency, turning what could have been a scandalous escapade into an act of self-preservation.

Hatch, the brooding teammate with a grudge and a secret, is who helps her escape. He is everything I love in a “hero”: strong, loyal, slightly self-destructive and utterly undone by feelings he doesn’t want to admit he has. His inner conflict about helping her, and the secret behind his long-standing resentment, give the book its bite. Their chemistry crackles; it’s the kind of tension that feels both inevitable and doomed, like watching two magnets deny their pull.

They hit a few bumps on the way to their HEA, some which bump them right back. The romance unfolds with plenty of wit but also genuine tenderness, exploring themes of identity, loyalty and forgiveness.

If you’re into sports romance with emotional depth, forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers energy, and secrets that actually pay off, this one lands hard. Rebel Bride isn’t just about scandal or heat, it’s about two people finally seeing themselves clearly in each other’s reflection

This is the second installment in a new spinoff of the Chicago Rebel/Rookie Rebel series, which introduces the next generation of hockey players and their romantic entanglements. The story centers around Hatch Kershaw, the son of the legendary hockey player Theo Kershaw, from the previous book, InstaCrush. Theo, nearing the end of his illustrious career, yearns for a chance to win the Stanley Cup. Hatch is traded to his team to play with his dad in his potentially last season. Although the team doesn’t win the cup, they manage to make it to the playoffs.

The story begins with the postseason at the wedding of his teammate Dash Carter to Summer Landry. Hatch is not a fan of either Dash or Summer but is roped into being a groomsman after a last-minute dropout. While he’s outside getting some fresh air, he sees the bride shimmying out of the bathroom window. After breaking her fall, he helps her escape to his family’s cabin.

This book incorporates several tropes, including the runaway bride, forced proximity, and forbidden romance (teammate’s ex). The author handles all of these tropes effectively. While Hatch’s dad was portrayed as a lovable, gregarious, and sweet character, Hatch is a bit moodier. Once you understand the reason behind his moodiness, it makes sense (who would want to be a groomsman at the wedding of their jerk of a teammate and the woman they’re smitten with?). Summer, on the other hand, is a people pleaser who ends up getting engaged to a man she didn’t love because he proposed in front of his friends and she didn’t want to embarrass him.

Overall, this is a delightful addition to the series, and I eagerly anticipate reading the next book in the series. I received an arc of this book from the author for my honest review.

ARC - 4 🌟 2 🌶️

🏒 Hockey romance
🩵 Runaway bride
🏒 Forced proximity
🩵 Teammate's ex
🏒 It's always been her
🩵 Banter and spice
🏒 Enemies to lovers

Summer was supposed to walk down the aisle, but instead, she ran. And of all people to find her mid–runaway bride moment? Hatch, the man who’s been giving her attitude for years. Turns out, all that gruffness was just his way of hiding how he really felt. When they start spending time together, it’s impossible not to wonder… could there be something real between them?

I’ve always liked both Summer and Hatch, even if his behavior used to confuse the heck out of me but now it all makes sense. Their connection is messy, heartfelt, and full of sharp banter (and yes, surprisingly deep discussions about cheese and hockey stats). I couldn’t stop rooting for them. Summer walking away from a life that didn’t fit her was the best thing she ever did and Hatch? Under that tough exterior, he’s a total softie. Even when he doesn’t get things quite right, his heart is always in the right place.

This story hit all the right notes: flirty, emotional, and laugh-out-loud funny. The chemistry sizzles, the writing flows effortlessly, and the side characters (especially the Kershaws) bring the perfect dose of chaos and charm. I devoured it in one sitting.

Hatch and Summer’s journey isn’t perfect, they stumble, they frustrate you, but they feel real. Their romance blends humor, heartbreak, and healing in a way that leaves you smiling through the swoons. It’s about second chances, self-worth, and finding someone who doesn’t just stand beside your dreams, they cheer you on while you chase them.

Thank you so much The Author Agency and Kate for this arc opportunity!

My life came to a complete stop when Kate's newest book Rebel Bride was dropped in my e-reader. I'd totally resent her power over my daily schedule if I didn't know that what awaits me on the other side of the chaos her books cause in my life is pure genius.

And I was right because this book couldn't have made me happier.

Hatch was already a star simply for his conception and by that, being the starting point for Elle and Superglute's love story. And now Kershaw Jr., THE Dino Boy, the great HATCHLING finally gets his own HEA.

In Summer he couldn't have found a better match. Their story is the ultimate enemies to lovers development. And I loved EVERY SECOND.

And if Kate Meader weren't already my all-time favorite author for gifting us all the brilliance that is THE Theo Kershaw, her referencing two of my most loved TV series in chapter 5 of Rebel Bride would've sealed the deal. And there she's goes and does it again in chapter 18.

There is only one big problem with every Kate Meader book. They are NOT. LONG. ENOUGH. Although how could they ever be? These mind-blowingly beautiful, laughing out loud funny and sometimes heartbreakingly touching stories completely draw you in until you are fully immersed. The saddest moment when reading one of her books is always the moment when you've reached the end.

If you don't know what I mean because you haven't read a book by Kate yet, I have only one question for you: what is the matter with you?

To me Kate Meader is the uncrowned but indisputable queen of hockey romance.

The only thing left to say is: If someone could give me direction to Saugatuck, please and Thank you.

This book was utter perfection. I for one love Summer so damn much, she is such a character I feel I would get along with and she has been through so much and the strength she manages to pull with her is nothing like you would expect. I feel a lot of people who read this book will fall for our FMC just like Hatch does.

Moving on to Hatch, this man has lived in the shadows of his father's career all his life and against his best interests he transfers to his home professional ice hockey team that his father has ruled for years before a possible retirement is thrown into the mix. The key reason Hatch did not really want to transfer is that the crush he has had for 5 years works there and is one of his new teammates' girlfriends and then when he officially joins the team Summer gets engaged to the world's biggest prick.

The plot for this book was perfect as I said, it starts on Summer's wedding day only she gets a boatload of jitters and throws herself out the bathroom window directly onto one of her fiancées stand-in groomsmen and the man who has loved her for years. They then hide away in one of his family's holiday houses until everything gets too much.

The book really follows Summer trying to find out what sort of person she is and what life she wants to lead and then there is Hatch fighting for an ounce of her attention and possible affection and supplying Summer with the cheese addiction the whole family has apparently.

I loved this book and could not put it down and I really feel that anyone who reads it will fall in love with Summer and Hatch too. It certainly was not a smooth road to get to our ending but it was certainly worth the wait and stress!!!

3 stars. This was on okay read for me. Rebel Bride is book two in the Chicago Players series and is Summer and Hatch's book. Summer met Hatch right after she met and started very casually dating one of his pro hockey teammates, a jerk named Dash. The two liked each other right away, but Hatch backed off when he found out about Dash. A few years later, Summer was still casually "on and off" dating Dash, when he surprised her by proposing and she panicked by saying yes. When the wedding rolled around, Summer knew she couldn't go through with marrying him. So she jumped out the window of the church, where Hatch happened to be standing. He helped her escape and gave her a place to stay while she hid out from papparazzi and press. The two find themselves attracted and liking each other again, but Summer knows she's not ready to jump into a new relationship right away. She has to get her life together first and start over before she can forge a new future with Hatch.

I admit this book frustrated me. I liked the premise and I liked Summer and Hatch. I thought they were a good match. But they were hardly together in the book. There was grumpiness, fighting and pushing away until the very end. They had me convinced they didn't love each other enough to overcome all their problems and make a relationship work. I didn't understand why Summer pushed Hatch away for so long. It was too little, too late when they finally got together at the very end. Still, it was an okay read. I liked the story and characters in general, even if the execution was not my favorite. I look forward to more from Ms. Meader in the future.

I'd give this 3.5 stars.

Hatch Kershaw, NFL hockey star (of the fictional Chicago Rebels) and son of one of the sport’s greats, doesn’t want to be at the wedding of his asshat teammate Dash and Summer, his violet eyed bride. (Dash is a trust fund bro who cheats on his fiancée and bullies his teammates.) Summer, Hatch assumes, is a gold digger marrying for the big house and bigger bucks. Watching them tie the knot is the last thing he wants to do—until, moments before the ceremony, he literally catches Summer climbing out a church window. So, because this is a romance  novel, he puts her in his SUV and drives her up to his family’s home in Saugatuck, Michigan. He has some time off before the season starts... why not?

Summer—born Shelby Mae—is from rural Mississippi, though her portrayal will irritate anyone actually from there. Summer has spent years remaking herself into the kind of woman a millionaire hockey player might marry. Dash made her quit her job with the Rebels—JERK!--and it's clear his incredibly nasty mom will be the one now running Summer's life. So yeah, she was, technically, a gold digger, until she realized what marrying for money really meant. Now, hiding on Michigan’s Gold Coast in Hatch’s grandmother’s hand-me-downs, eating actual food again (skinny-bride syndrome strikes again), and chatting with hottie Hatch about hockey, she’s determined to start over and make a life for herself on her own terms. That, of course, means Hatch, and a relationship, are taboo.

NGL, I wasn’t sure how I would like this book, given that its tropes include runaway bride and ex-fiancé’s teammate. Just felt a little too angsty for my liking, but since I LOVE Kate Meader, I dove in. And actually, I really enjoyed Rebel Bride—much more than I expected to because, all things considered, it ended up being pretty low angst.

In fact, there were a lot of things to love about this book, so here is an in-no-particular-order list:
• Hatch—I swooned for this man
• Shelby Mae
• Cheese flirting/courting
• That first kiss
• Summer’s insistence she needed to know and grow herself first
• Hatch’s family (side note: Instacrush is so good, y’all, if you haven’t read it, you should!)
• Next book intrigue (excuse me, Jason, what?!)

Without double-checking, this might be the first time I haven’t given a Kate Meader book an immediate five stars, so that begs the question, why not? Best way I can explain it—without spoilers—is that it felt slightly out of order, a touch slow through the middle, and like there was one or two things left on the table.

But that’s okay, because it was still a very fun read. Lots of banter, some spice, cameos galore, and a cheesy-in-the-best-way HEA. There is a reason I love Kate Meader and that’s never more evident than here, in this book that isn’t my favorite of hers, but that I still enjoyed: she can write so well that even when she dives into territory that makes this ol’ fraidy cat reader nervous, I end up smiling.

Chicago Players #2

Shelby Mae from Mississippi had reinvented herself, she's now Summer Landry from the Bay area. She couldn't wait to get away from her past, find a job, better herself, except she ended up with Dash and was about to marry him and end up in a family she definitely didn't want to be in. So what's a person to do? Escape out the bathroom window in the church!

Hatch Kershaw is part of the Chicago Rebels hockey team, taking a trade so he could play on the ice with his dad Theo before he retires. What he wasn't planning on was being a groomsman for one of his teammates that he didn't care for, nor the bride asking for his help in fleeing her wedding and then he taking her up to his family's vacation home so she can hide out.

Hatch had met Summer five years ago at the Rebels holiday party and was smitten but he realized she was with Dash. He had even turned down being traded to the team three years prior because of her.
Both thought the other hated them and the opposite was true.

While at the lake house they get to know each other better, become friends and now she knows why he treated her with a cold shoulder. But now she needs to find a job, a place to live so back to the city she goes. He just wants to protect her and spend time with her but she is keeping a distance to protect him and to keep the drama away from the team.
So much for good intentions.

Will they find what they're looking for?

4.5 stars
Loved the text messages and his family.

When Hatch Kershaw agreed to be a groomsman at his teammate's wedding, he never expected to catch the bride as she made her escape out of a window. But given his secret love for her, helping Summer was a no-brainer. She had been coerced into the wedding, from the public proposal to the ceremony meticulously planned by the groom’s mother and had lost sight of herself in the process. It wasn't until she saw a chance to escape that she grabbed it, but the last thing she expected was for Hatch, who she thought hated her, to come to her aid.

It was a close proximity romance for the second book in the Chicago Players series as Hatch Kershaw, son of the legendary Theo helps the woman he has loved since they first met even though he did such a good job of hiding it, she thought he hated her. There were so many reasons why they couldn’t be together – her engagement to his teammate the main one, even though said teammate didn’t deserve her as he tried to change everything about his bride to be. When Hatch takes her to his family’s lake house to hide from the fall out of the wedding that never was, it wasn’t long before things started to heat up between them. I loved learning more about Summer as she battled her inner ‘Shelby Mae’ She was clearly a girl who had reinvented herself but then got lost along the way as she got caught up with a man she didn’t love. Now finally seeing clearly she was wary of making another mistake. I did hate how she felt she had to apologise to her ex – girl he gaslighted you and his actions afterwards just proved you had a lucky escape!

Rebel Bride, the second book in the Chicago Players Series, was an absolute delight! It was an entertaining read filled with witty banter, strong team camaraderie, and the delightful tension of forced proximity that ultimately leads to something much more!

This is Hatch Kershaw and Summer Landry’s journey and it kept me mesmerized unable to put it down!

Hatch Kershaw finds himself at his least favorite teammate’s wedding when the bride unexpectedly jumps out of the window and lands on him. Summer, who doesn’t regret not getting married, wishes she had called it off sooner. Seeking a place to hide and regroup, Hatch takes her to his family’s vacation house. As they spend more time together, it becomes evident that they share a deep connection, a connection they both tried to ignore since their first meeting five years ago.

The chemistry between Hatch and Summer is electrifying. The tension between them as he tries to avoid her is captivating. The forced closeness while they seek refuge forces them to be more vulnerable with each other, and this means he can no longer conceal his feelings for her. However, is Summer prepared to give love another chance?

This story had me completely captivated. I couldn’t help but sigh, giggle, and swoon as I cheered on Summer and Hatch. Of course, the biggest bonus is spending more time with the entire Kershaw family and immersing myself in the world of the Rebels hockey team. I’m a huge fan of Kate Meader’s hockey world and can’t wait for the next installment.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | “Sometimes the man you’re meant to be with is the one who helps you climb out the window.”

Runaway bride? ✔️
Grumpy hockey player with a secret crush? ✔️
Forced proximity in a lakeside cabin? ✔️
Cheese flirtation, family chaos, and emotional growth? Double ✔️

Kate Meader’s Rebel Bride is everything I want in a next-gen hockey romance—equal parts heart, heat, and hilarity. When Summer bolts from her wedding (to Hatch’s awful teammate, no less), she quite literally falls into Hatch’s arms. What follows is a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers story full of witty banter, swoony tension, and the kind of emotional vulnerability that makes you melt.

Hatch hides his heart behind sarcasm, but once you get under that tough exterior, he’s a total softie. Summer, meanwhile, is rediscovering herself after losing her identity in a toxic relationship. Together, they find the courage to be honest—about who they are, what they want, and who they want with them.

I adored revisiting the Kershaw clan and the wider Rebels world—it feels like coming home to a team that’s all grit, loyalty, and found family. The pacing dipped a little in the middle, but the banter, emotional payoff, and that final HEA more than made up for it.

A delicious mix of flirty, heartfelt, and just cheesy enough (in every sense). Can’t wait to see who falls next in the Chicago Players series.

🏒 Tropes I loved:
💍 Runaway Bride
😠 → ❤️ Enemies to Lovers
🏡 Forced Proximity
🔥 Slow Burn + Spice
👨‍👩‍👧 Found Family
