I’m marking this “read” a bit early, to make sure it counts for 2025. The truth is, I may not finish it.
Lam Life is little more than a series of deranged, political, Twitter rants. Honestly, it would be more forgivable if the author WERE under the influence (she says she’s not, other than maybe some pot). She doesn’t focus on the homeless life until chapter ten—until then, it’s a tear-down of everything in society and politics that is perceived to be a cause of homelessness, or just annoyance for the author.
I could barely stomach her “truth.” While she begins by saying she did not vote for POTUS 47, she tows the MAGA line with all of her rants. She asks for compassion for those living on the streets, but certainly not for undocumented immigrants. She has a nickname for the COVID-19 pandemic that blames one party, but fails to mention that it began and got worse under the other party. She mocks voting in general—either she votes 3rd party or just has no confidence that her vote will make any difference—and proclaims that spouting the laws back at police officers and city halls is the way to go.
The book does offer a valuable glimpse into the “vehomecular” life (residing in one’s vehicle), but its lack of editing, structure, or respect for the reader frankly tilts it toward the trash can more than the bookshelf.
I’m glad her voice is heard, but I wish she had more sensible things to say.
