The lies we tell ourselves may one day kill us. A new psychological thriller from the award-winning author of What Happened at Lee House and Lake of Secrets.

Bestselling suspense novelist Kendall Lamb boards the Aleut Queen, a vintage luxury sleeper train cutting through the stark beauty of the Alaska Peninsula. Reeling from a devastating breakup, Kendall hopes the remote journey will soothe her bruised heart. But solitude isn't in the cards, and when she finds enigmatic Harper Lambert, a striking woman with a haunted gaze, accidentally booked into her private car, sparks fly. Despite the red flags Harper waves like warning flares, Kendall spends the night with her.

By morning, Harper is gone. And Kendall is the prime suspect in a brutal murder. To complicate things further, the Aleut Queen's inaugural journey includes an elaborate murder mystery game involving passengers. Each guest has been assigned a secret killer, victim, saboteur, witness.

The first clue  Take a look around you. Someone you may have already met intends to prevent this train from reaching its destination. This person is putting everyone at risk, including you. You will receive additional clues throughout your journey. Each will bring you closer to the truth, but be aware that the closer you get, the greater danger you will face. Talk to everyone. Trust no one. Remember this is only a game.

Except it isn't. As the train snakes its way through Alaska's wilderness and the line between reality and fiction blurs, Kendall must untangle the truth about Harper, the murder, and a shadowy saboteur before another life is lost that may well be her own.

A locked room whodunnit has always been a favourite of mine since reading Agatha Christie novels at an impressionable age. Lucas gives us a murder on a moving train with a full cast of suspects. The story fluctuates between the solving of the mystery and the fledgling romance where there is heat and attraction but a negative age gap mental block held by the main character.

The Sleeper Car first hits you with its stunning cover design by Suela. I would definitely love to see more of their designs used as I am so over the cartoonish covers that are currently popular. The prologue is next leaving you wanting to turn the pages as quickly as possible. The conclusion is something I had hoped for but am surprised nonetheless. All in all a fun read.

A wonderful book! I totally enjoyed it. It was a fun read. A nicely written whodunnit.

The story revolves around Kendall and Harper's attempt to solve the mystery of the alleged murderee while tiptoeing around each other's romantic impasse.

The fun part of the story is of course trying to guess who the murderer is and what the motives are.

The romance wasn't the main focus of the story though it is still part of the main plot with an attraction-repulsion dynamic.

I really liked the ending both the solving of the murder and the resolution of the pair. It gives a contented feeling overall.

Great story!

I would like to thank the author for this free ARC in return for my review.

Well what a find! Thanks to however I stumbled upon it.

Very clever, unusual premise, pacy dialogue, really strong characters especially in the MCs Kendall and Harper.

Its set around a themed murder mystery game on a sleeper train as it travels Alaska. Someone goes missing. I loved the plot with its very dark themes add in some revenge and twists.

The author is truly skillful. The writing seemed smooth and effortless. As a book its an addictive page turner.

Overall I loved it! you should probably get on board..

A Well Done Romantic Suspense Mystery!

This was such a great book! It grabs from the beginning and doesn't let up. The characters had depth and I could feel what it might be like to ride a train through Alaska. Just one spicy scene but the story was so enjoyable, I didn't realize that until the story was done. Highly recommend if you love either romance, suspense, or mysteries because with this you get all 3! Do your future self a favor and read it:)
PS: Because I'm a bit petty, I do wish we would have seen Gemma&Whitney get their karma, lol. You will know what I mean when you read it. So go read it already!!

I have read several books by Frances Lucas, but The Sleeper Car is my favorite. Set mostly on a train in Alaska, it combines suspense, romance, and a touch of humor that shines through the main protagonists. The characters are engaging, and as their personal struggles unfold, their choices make perfect sense. I especially loved how a fun murder mystery game for the passengers turned into a real crime, adding an exciting twist. Everything came together in a satisfying way, making this a very engaging read.

If you read and liked Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, you’ll like this book, too! The Sleeper Car is written in the classic style of the locked door mystery – all the suspects are “trapped” on the Aleut Queen, a “luxury” train making its first run in the Alaskan wilderness. But the action starts before the passengers board the train. We meet our main character, Kendall Lamb, a successful mystery author, early on. She’s describing the wisdom of her taking this trip to the Alaskan wilderness (and a quite expensive trip at that) without her ex, Gemma, who was the one really wanting to go on this trip. Kendall wanted to surprise Gemma with the trip after proposing marriage to her, only for Kendall to find out that Gemma has been sleeping with Kendall’s editor. To nurse her broken heart, Kendall decided to go on the trip anyway - by herself - hoping it would take her mind off her heartbreak. There is some action at a “luxury” camp before the group embarks on the train ride, but the majority of the action takes place on the train. We do meet Harper at the camp – or perhaps more accurately, on a hike before they retire for the night at the camp – a freelance photographer whom Kendall meets by chance. They don’t exactly hit it off and things go downhill from there once they are on the train. That’s enough about the plot. BTW, I put "luxury" in quotation marks thanks to Kendall's own expressions of "really - this is what they consider luxury?" (That's a paraphrase of Kendall's thoughts on the matter.) Neither the camp nor the train sounded luxurious to me, either!

Ms. Lucas has woven an intricate tale of mystery and suspense and peopled it with well drawn characters. For those who read a lot of mysteries, you may catch a clue or two along the way but suffice it to say, you’ll more than likely not surmise the outcome of the mystery. I found myself thinking “What????” more often than not and I read a LOT of mysteries! The character development is really good considering that this is not a long book. You learn a lot about the passengers fairly quickly. The pacing is brisk, and the prose and dialogue are spot on. The book is written from the perspective of Kendall primarily, but at times the narration switches to Harper, and there are interludes from the perspective of the bad guy, whose identity we do not know. All are written in first person so we’re getting their thoughts as well as their interactions with the other characters. For those who want to know, there is some language and there is some physical romance. I didn’t find either to be excessive or just there for there’s sake – it all fits the plot and the characters as you read. All in all, this is a well written locked door/closed room mystery populated with a train full of interesting characters that will keep you reading well past your bedtime to find out what happens next!

The Sleeper Car is a fantastic book! It is my favorite Lucas book so far and I would love to see the lead characters in further adventures.

The protagonist is a successful mystery writer, Kendall, who takes an inaugural trip on a tourist train down the Alaskan Peninsula. A booking error means she ends up with an unwelcome and annoying cabin mate named Harper. Add a murder mystery game, a real murder, loads of likely suspects, an actual murderer still on the train and Kendall in danger and you have a true page turner. This book has it all: humor, grief, suspense, romance, revenge, red herrings and a missing passenger who might, or might not, have been murdered by Kendall. (And the guy's a real jerk so it's easy to understand why someone would murder him.)

The story unfolds through the perspectives of both Kendall and Harper who have very different motivations for being on this particular train trip. The plot is complicated but all comes together at the end with a conclusion that will be a surprise to just about everyone who reads it Not what I expected at all but somehow quite satisfying.

I would love to read more novels featuring these characters. Kendall's career as a mystery writer as well as her past stint as a police officer makes her an intriguing character and one I'd like to get to know better. A gritty Jessica Fletcher, as it were.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries and suspense novels, appreciates learning tidbits about Alaska and to book clubs who want a quick read with a mystery that's fun to try to figure out along with the lead characters.

The Sleeper Car is an absolute thrill ride from start to finish! Frances Lucas masterfully blends suspense, romance, and intrigue into a story that kept me reading vigilantly late into the night.

Set against the eerie backdrop of a luxury train, the novel pulls you into a world of secrets, passion, and danger. The pacing is electric — just when you think you’ve solved the mystery, another twist barrels down the track. The chemistry between the main characters feels genuine and deeply emotional, adding a romantic heartbeat to the chilling murder mystery unfolding around them.

Lucas’s writing is sharp and cinematic — every scene feels alive with tension and atmosphere. I could almost hear the rhythmic clatter of the rails as the plot twisted and turned toward a shocking finale I never saw coming.

If you love stories that are thrilling, romantic, and edge-of-your-seat suspenseful, The Sleeper Car delivers in every way. It’s the kind of book that makes you miss your stop because you just have to know what happens next!

After learning her lover has been cheating on her with her editor (when she tried to propose!) author Kendall Lamb decides to go on a wilderness/train vacation she booked for them alone.

She meets Harper, and there's a spark.. until she jokingly calls Kendall 'grandma.' Complicating matters, they find out they're double booked on the train. There's a mystery game on the train, too, and adding to the mess Harper suddenly comes on to her harder.

Then the next door passenger disappears, and it looks like Harper has framed Kendall for it.

We switch pov to Harper, who apparently was plotting against Alan, who rated her sister. We see her plot, study him, then learn that Kendall will be close to him on the train and uses that.

(Im really impressed that the author gives them each a clear narrative voice.)

Back to Kendall, who's trying to figure out what actually happened, and who, if anyone, killed Alan...

As I said, im very impressed with how well the author gave everyone clear narrative voices. The plot, while complicated, made sense and was a engrossing read.

4 out of 5 stars.

I love mysteries especially with some suspense and this book has both. Throw in two MC’s Kendall and Harper that rub each other the wrong way and an interesting cast of suspects and you have a great book. From the beginning I was hooked. The mystery started right away. Kendall is a famous author who we find is taking a trip that hopefully will help her get over heart break. She meets Harper and from the beginning they rub each other the wrong way. They both are on board a murder mystery train. Nothing is as it seems. Is the murder part of the show or is it real? This book keeps you guessing the whole way. I do not want to give anything away. As I said if you like mysteries this book is for you. I highly recommend it. I received an advance copy for free and leaving a review voluntarily.

Trains, Romance and Murder, Oh My!!
This book is a taut and atmospheric murder mystery that unfolds aboard a train where every passenger seems to harbor a secret. Lucas’s sharp dialogue and keen sense of pacing draw the reader into a web of intrigue that deepens with every page turn.
Each chapter added new twists and secrets, and I kept guessing right up to the end. It’s a smart, suspenseful read that’s perfect for anyone who enjoys a well-crafted whodunit with great atmosphere and tension. Love, love, love the main characters!

Thoughtful, Well-Crafted, and Engaging

The Sleeper Car is a standout read that is beautifully written and impressively constructed. It has everything I want in a murder mystery: a tightly plotted whodunit, plenty of suspense, and just the right amount of atmosphere. There's also a sapphic romance woven into the story, which is another plus.
The writing is sharp, and the story moves at a perfect pace—never dragging, never rushed. It’s clear the author put a lot of thought into every detail.

A very well paced , well thought out whodunit that kept me guessing to the end. I was little dubious of the format that this book took to start with but it made more sense as the story unravelled. It did feel a little farcical at times and not very true to life but if you are looking for a solid plot and you are willing to look past the coincidences and unlikely scenarios and accept it for the overall story it is really well done. Very much along the lines of Agatha Christie and just as well devised a plot.

This book was SO GOOD! The character development was so well done, and the characters were likable.

Then the story started to come together and it became very exciting! I couldn't put it down! Frances does an incredible job of tying together romance and thriller and it is a talent.

I love a good thriller with a little bit of revenge tied in and this book did not disappoint!

I highly recommend it!

Move over, Frieda. I see your Housemaid and I raise you The Sleeper Car. I love this kind of book where you think you know what's going on and suddenly you don't. I stayed up all night finishing it.

Both characters were relatable, but I empathized the most with Kendall. Years ago, a woman I fell in love with cheated on me. It was tough, but I got to the other side. Love the way she's described.

Another thrilling mystery by author Frances Lucas. This one takes place on a train and the stakes are high. Passengers are lying. A man goes missing. The two MCs just can't get along - because at least one of them is lying too!
I don't want to give away the plot, but let's just say my fingernails are bitten to the quick. I was worried for one character in particular. "No, you can't do that!" I screamed at the book.
So good! This one is probably my favorite.

If you love fast-paced suspense, dangerous chemistry, and novels that blur the lines between love, hate, and revenge, this one is for you. Kendall and Harper meet in Alaska. They feel a strong attraction to each other, but things immediately start to go wrong. The first night out on a train, a passenger disappears, and everyone thinks Kendall did it. I loved this book.

I was given an ARC and am reviewing it voluntarily. But no lie, it is good!

Loved this book about revenge and obsession. Two women meet and feel an instant attraction, but it all goes haywire because they can't trust each other. There's a murder, sex (just the right amount for me), and a fantastic ending that I didn't see coming. I thought I had everything figured out, but about halfway through, I realized I was wrong. Really good book.

The Sleeper Car is definitely a “page turner” that had me invested in trying to figure out the motivations of the two main characters Harper and Kendall as well as the “who done it “ story line. Definitely a ‘good read’ when I start thinking about who would play what roles in a movie adaptation.

No rating since I DNFed before I got too far into it. I don't think I was in the right mood for this. I got really bored with it. Maybe it was the writing. Maybe it was me (especially since it's rated so high). I might try another time.

I loved this book! It reminded me of "Strangers on a Train" mixed with Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express." If you're a fan of either of those movies, you'll likely enjoy this book as well. The twists, turns, and deception kept me guessing throughout the entire story. It truly brought to mind classic psychological thrillers. I would definitely recommend reading this, along with all of the author's other books.

"The Sleeper Car" by Frances Lucas is an intriguing journey, a crime investigation and a love play in one bite. If you dare grab it you get a deep crime plot and side love story, intertwined with witty-sarcastic dialogues, a complex plot and a five-star writing style. If Agatha Christie is one of your favorite authors of classic crime novels, then you would love Frances, because she manages to recreate the same adventurous atmosphere and excite the reader's heart until the last page, making you mutter over the pages "who's the damn murderer...?!?".
"The Sleeper Car" is distinguished by a dynamic narrative, its body shows a deep analysis of the topics involved and a precisely crafted psychology of the characters. Kendall and Harper's insecurities, their tender flaws make them believable - beautifully broken, loved, someone to sympathize with, characters to identify with... Delicate, with measured details, the piquancy is not lacking, but it is polished as a nice touch to the overall picture, without being the main focus. Simply put, I love it!!! 💖
I recommend this book to anyone who, like me, is a fan of thrills, crime solving and romantic turmoil. If you are the same type, then "The Sleeper Car" is your main course - a gourmet bite of "tour de force", served "cold as revenge", deliciously dangerous, rich as Umami, creating lasting emotions for days after the last page. 😉
Warning⚠️: The reading is a full-length thriller and some traumatic themes such as suicide and sexual assault are mentioned, so keep this in mind if you are anxious.
