There are some books you read to escape, and others you read to remember who you are. Rio G’s The Fire That Binds Us did a bit of both for me. It felt less like reading a story and more like receiving a quiet, steady reminder of the strength we carry.
What completely captivated me was how the book shifts the conversation around women’s power. It isn't portrayed as some loud, aggressive magic; it's an intrinsic, unyielding force that builds over centuries.
The story moves beautifully across time, showing us women who face entirely different worlds but carry the exact same spirit. In the past, there is a quiet, fierce resilience—the kind of strength it takes to heal and protect a community when a fearful society is trying to diminish you. In the present day, that same power shifts into brilliant capability and sharp intellect, showing up in a woman who refuses to let her voice be minimised in rooms meant to crowd her out.
The most beautiful thing about this book is how it connects those worlds. It shows that whether it’s ancient knowledge or modern intelligence, it’s the exact same unbroken thread of brilliance. Women's power doesn't change; it just adapts.
I loved that these characters weren't written as flawless icons. They stumble, they doubt themselves, and they feel the exhaustion of fighting uphill battles. But the "fire" that binds them isn't a weapon; it’s their connection to each other. It left me thinking deeply about the women in my own life and the quiet lineages of strength we all inherit.
It’s an empowering, comforting, and geand who's ending is a rare time-taken piece of story telling perfection. A genuinely moving read.
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)

Wow for a debut novel this was fantastic.
Rio writes such a powerful story about female struggles and sexism. This story is written with two POV’s one that follows Talia who is a scientist researching antibiotic resistant bacteria and looking back at more natural ways to cure diseases. She comes across a journal from the 17th century written by Lilith. Lilith is the other POV in the story and she is a healer who is a witch that must defend her coven.
This book is only about 250 pages long but takes you on a great story across the ages.

A completely compelling and spellbinding dual timeline story about feminism, nature and humanity. Despite the sweeping themes, the characters detailed in this novel are completely intriguing, their motivations, dreams and patterns drawing you in before you even realise it. So as a reader, you’re invested in the individuals and where they’re going as well as knowing the themes underpinning your journey are going to be worth it. And wow, what a finale so yes, completely worth it. If you love fantasy and magic woven into contemporary times yet rooted in its origins, this is the book for you.

I really loved this book! Such a different vibe to what I normally read but it was so thoughtfully written. I loved the format and the way Rio wrote, the characters were relatable and likeable - they had you rooting for them. The dual timeline was great and Rio did a fantastic job of alternating between the two and keeping my attention for both.

Thoroughly enjoyed this and cannot wait to see what else is to come :)

A nice read.

I enjoyed the story line, it gave me a hocus pocus vibe with a political edge which I enjoyed.

I would have given 4 stars however I was a bit distracted by very repetitive words and phrases being used through out. Everything was ' softly or softened. Everything had ' weight ' and things ' flickered ' a lot.
It's just my personal gripe and doesn't take away from the fact it was a well thought out story that came together nicely over the two timelines
