Leah and Elijah Von Garcia are the first two humans to be resurrected from Death by a revolutionary scientific advancement known as Identity Transfer. The couple arranged to be cryogenically frozen at the time of their deaths; centuries later Elijah was resurrected, and Leah was scheduled for the same, once Elijah’s health and well-being were confirmed, but before that happened Leah was abducted in her cryonic chamber. Speculation around her abduction focused on her Nobel-Prize winning scientific work on interstellar travel and a myth that sprang up after her death, in which she supposedly kept some of her discoveries secret, in the belief that humans weren’t ready for them yet. As the couple’s story unfolds, there are sidebar meditations on the response of the devoutly religious to a practical form of resurrection, and the challenges that interstellar travel presents for the world’s nations, as well as more intimate discussions around fanaticism, hatred, love, and devotion.
