The Wings of Light by Riri H Rating: ★★★☆☆
“I’m drowning, and Kai’s the only thing that seems to keep me afloat.”
This book has a lot of ingredients I usually love: a hidden magical world, an academy setting, prophecy and fate, and a cast that leans into found family. Once Avilyna is pulled into Elgar, the story settles into its strongest lane. Elgar itself is the highlight for me, with elves, witches, lycans, and the lingering tension of past wars creating a setting that feels fun to explore. I also appreciated the dual POV, the mental health representation, and the way the amnesia thread adds extra intrigue.
Where it lost me a bit was pacing and character arc progression. For the page count, I expected more ground covered, especially when it came to Avilyna’s growth. The story reads like a mash-up of familiar vibes, with moments that reminded me more of Fourth Wing than the epic, sweeping fantasy feel I was hoping for.
Kai and Avilyna’s dynamic was also hit-or-miss for me. The secret attraction is there, but the antagonism in their banter sometimes felt unnecessarily sharp rather than entertaining, which made parts of the romance feel more abrupt than earned. On the other hand, the side characters were easier to enjoy early on, and there are definitely scenes where the prose turns lyrical and atmospheric.
Overall, this was a solid read with a strong concept and a compelling magical backdrop. I’m curious to see what book two does with the ending and the bigger questions it raises.
