About Last Christmas

Rate this book
She’s trying to avoid a holiday disaster. He’s trying to earn his way off her naughty list. Both need a Christmas Miracle.

Greta Carlton is beautifully content running her antique shop in the snow-globe town of Silver Creek, sipping vanilla gingerbread lattes, and staying clear of drama. But a whirlwind encounter with a handsome stranger leads to a whimsical evening, stirring her heart to believe in movie-style romance. That is, until Leo disappears into thin (and snowy) air. Ten months later, he walks into her shop like the Ghost of Christmas Last, needing a favor.

She’s still mad.
He’s still charming.

Greta doesn’t have time for men with dimpled grins and the proclivity for vanishing. She’s got her own holiday project with an approaching deadline. Though the more she learns about Leo, the more she realizes he’s the only thing standing between her and a Christmas catastrophe. They agree to help each other reach their holiday goals. As they untangle feelings as stubborn as knotted Christmas lights, Greta wonders if second chances are like antiques—unexpected, imperfect, and everything you didn’t know you were looking for.

About Last Christmas is a sweet holiday romance wrapped in witty banter, heartfelt twists, and the dreamy thrill of finding love in the glow of twinkling lights.

RTC maybe later but I just didn’t how sensual the romance was, focused on physical and not character. And I didn’t like a scene that was meant to be comical I assume but I didn’t find it funny to have a nativity scene without heads. It just felt disrespectful. And it just didn’t feel right for me to continue. 😊

For what's probably the third or fourth time, Rachel has hitched her writing to my brain and pulled it free from a reading slump, and I'm so grateful 👏 I DEVOURED this book. The comedy was perfect (I laughed out loud so many times), the romance had me kicking my feet (and it's squeaky clean), and the holiday vibes were everything.

I'm currently in a season of being a caregiver for my grandmother, and reading Greta's perspective was so healing 🫶 Just because life doesn't look the way we expect, there is still joy to be found and things to be thankful for, and it was wonderful to feel seen by this book in that way.

Rachel continues to solidify her spot as one of my favorite authors. 5 stars from me! 🌟

Not typically a fan of rom-com, I didn't realize 'About Last Christmas' was exactly what I needed right now. The humorous banter was playfully witty, the scenic, small-town Christmas setting incredibly charming, and the characters?—absolutely delightful! I just may have emitted an unladylike guffaw or two during this unputdownable read that left me dreaming of a magical, white Christmas—something we haven't seen in my state in thirty-six years! 😥

“I remembered what you said.” His voice is soothing as he strokes my hair. “When a man’s in love, he’d do all he could to make her world right again.”

This is a wonderful contemporary Christmas romance. It has amazing characters, classic movie references, a Secret Santa project, fantastic chemistry, and small town Christmas charm.

Greta is introverted, clumsy, and kind. She sometimes speaks without thinking and the results are quite funny. I loved her determination to help Leo find the antiques on his list. I loved how she was willing to listen to Leo, forgive, and build their friendship. She is dealing with a pretty big hurt from her past that affects her relationship with Leo. Leo is charming, caring, and has a few secrets. I love his tenderness with Greta. He is such a flirt and I absolutely loved his little comments. The banter between Greta and Leo from their first meeting to the end was so fun. That first kiss 🫠

A few more quotes:
“You, my friend, are Bob Wallace tonight.” I plop the Santa hat on his head. “There.” His eyes dart to the rolling rack, which holds my dress. “Are you Betty?” “I am.” He steps closer. “And we’re recreating the final scene of the movie?” His tone takes on a sudden interest. “The entire scene?” “Um, no,” I sputter. “We’re not making out behind the tree.”

“I’m not sure if you realize this.” He grips me tighter. “But I’m struggling to get you out of my head.” “Do you want me out of your head?” “No,” he says, and I feel his smile on my skin. “I don’t want you out of my arms either.”

I don't even know what to say about this book. All I've got is that I'll be reading this one over and over again. And not just at Christmas.

The banter, the humor, the small-town life...

Could this be the perfect contemporary Christmas book?

About Last Christmas has a damsel in distress, snow, sledding, tree-trimming, and twinkle light kisses. A balance of humor and community and sweatpants. It also has a charming (or comically deranged, depending on your sense of humor — which I mean in the most complimentary way) setting for the “only one bed” trope. Elements of healing and understanding are a significant part of Greta’s journey I appreciated, themes that overflow into all of her relationships.

In the story, the tiniest details come full circle! My favorite aspects are similar to things I happen to love about McDaniel’s historical novels, too: WIT and a strong sense of identity for the characters. The story is told entirely from Greta’s first-person POV, a viewpoint that allows Leo to play the hero with a smart, enigmatic, and selfless charm. The romance is set up with a hilarious meet-cute and extends to a second chance situation that allows for some mystery, sweet tension, and fantastic grand gestures.

My thanks to the publisher for the ebook review copy. This is my honest review.

4.5 stars - rounded up for this platform’s structure
Completed: Dec. 25/25
Format: Kindle Unlimited e-book via “Alexa” assisted reading to listen (it IS Christmas and I had no time to sit and read! lol!)

Book #180 of 2025:
This may sound odd but I was *NOT* getting into this book. I thought that was EXTREMELY strange because of what I had heard about this novel. I was at least a third of the way into the book-maybe even 40%. I was listening to “Alexa” read to me. I use that feature when I have stuff to do and want to read at the same time.

HOWEVER….. I had a very off couple of days and nothing was really registering. I was less than blah! Not laughing. Not enjoying it. Nothing! I was SO tired and bone weary from Christmas prep, shopping, etc. I decided to back up quite a bit and listen to it again almost from the start.

I am so glad I did because so little had gotten through to me. I listened to it again through all the work cooking and baking on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

I love “The Mavericks!” What an absolute hoot! The doll lady, the scammer, Leo’s soft and strong heart, and everything about Greta. She is so REAL and comfortable with being who she is. She loves big and cares so much for others. Yet life shows her a few things about where she has weakness and a lack of confidence. She acknowledges it, learns, and makes changes. I found her to be so relatable for a reader.

I appreciated that many characters shined in this book, yet it was never confusing. The budding romance wasn’t so big that it took away from several other important parts of this book. Their growth was realistic and enjoyable.

There were many moments of hilarity and I smiled often. It’s a super feel-good story with a great about giving and looking deeper. Great messages.

I highly recommend this novel. A few of my favourites quotes are:
⁃ “There’s a difference between giving from your heart and giving as a default response.” (pg. 270)
⁃ “How many others cross my path who are fighting battles, suffering in silence, and I’m completely unaware? I’m sure I didn’t always say the right words, but … was I kind? Because kindness is a language we can all speak.” (pg. 280)
⁃ ⁃ “It’s strange to think how little things, small decisions, can accumulate, changing the direction of your life. And sometimes, those moments that seem to tear apart your soul can rebuild your vision.” (pg. 292)

OVERALL STAR RATING: 5/5
CLEAN RATING: 5/5

This book pretty much had it ALL! A perfect Christmas read, truly laugh-out-loud comedic banter and a sweet storyline that will tug at your heartstrings. I immediately connected with the characters right from chapter one. This was my very first read by Rachel Scott McDaniel and I think she is more known for historical fiction. She absolutely nailed this one and I do hope she continues to bring us more of these sweet, swoony and funny stories. I’m a HUGE fan of historical as well so I can’t wait to discover more of her work. She clearly knows what she’s doing as an author. For all of you Rachel fans – what book from her back list should I pick up next?

This story hit a personal chord. Losing a grandparent right before Christmas can be extra tough and our FMC, Greta, is coping with just that. Leo, our MMC, enters the scene with a hilarious meet-cute and so starts a unique and interesting relationship between the two. Things don’t start off as a perfect romantic fairytale, however. Leo stands Greta up and disappears for nearly a year after their adorable meet-cute. You’ll just have to pick this one up and read the reasoning behind all of that and how they manage to reconnect after so much time has passed.

I loved the cozy vintage feel to this story. There’s a lot of focus on Greta’s antique store, hunting down vintage treasures, references to White Christmas (hands down the BEST Christmas movie to ever exist) and other classic holiday films. The side characters in this story are also fantastically endearing. Perfect small-town vibes and a heartwarming focus on the importance of family and living a kind, generous and selfless life.

I highly recommend you get this one onto your December TBR!

Most books written in first-person present tense with the single POV of the female main character make me very annoyed. An entire book is enormously too long to spend inside the head of another woman. However, Greta did not annoy me, and so for that, Rachel McDaniel, I tip my hat to you.
This is a sweet, festive book that takes its time with all the pretty scenes, fun details, and romantic dialogue. The characters also have more to do than just drink coffee and stare at each other as they fall in love. Greta and Leo have organic interactions and chemistry. We have some of the negative motivation that appears much too often in romance novels: the conflict is only inside the FMC's head and does not exist externally. HOWEVER, it genuinely fits in this story, while it does not in others. And it has a reasonable resolution; it doesn't just vanish suddenly bc the page count is at 90% and it's time for the kiss. It also is not the entire plot.
This book is a very well-written contemporary Christmas romance. It releases October 23, so it's the perfect time to order it if you're looking for a Christmas romance to read during the holiday season!
Also, I'm going to need the next couple's story asap.....You know who I'm talking about, Rachel! Maybe a Valentine's book?? 👀

Absolutely delightful, I loved every minute of this charming story! About Last Christmas is sweet, touching and hilarious. I could not put it down. The funny running commentary thanks to Greta Carlton is a hoot! Her nicknames for people are comical, the Mavericks (similar to the older guys in the movie Return to Me) are endearing, her loyal best friend Tilly, and Leo, the handsome stranger she meets one Christmas make this an unforgettable story. I highly recommend you race to your nearest bookseller and preorder this gem, you will love it.

This book was so much fun. It was funny and touching and the characters were so great. I've loved Rachel's historical novels, but let me tell you - she takes a contemporary story and still manages to make it feel like a classic. Maybe it's the references to classic movies that does it...
Loved it!

This is my first, and definitely not my last, book by Rachel Scott McDaniel! And wow! I’m glad I bought into the hype I was seeing on Instagram, because it was beyond adorable!!

About Last Christmas is the super cute story of Greta (an antique store owner) and Leo (a volunteer firefighter) and their chance meeting while setting up a Christmas display. From there, they shared a disastrous sled ride down “Killer Hill” and made a plan to meet up later on. When Leo failed to show, Greta moved on until suddenly one day she sees him outside her store window chasing a stroller into the street! From there, these two, end up working together for different causes and can’t seem to help falling for each other along the way!

This book had me utterly enchanted from the beginning! I loved Greta’s kind, caring, and giving heart! She was so generous with her time and talents, and really loved helping others! Leo was so dreamy! With his shameless flirting, endless smirks, and his big heart, you can easily see why Greta fell head over heels for him!

I’m so glad I picked up this book and you will be too! The perfect read for your holiday season!

Favorite quotes:

“His tall, dark, and handsome contrasts with my petite, ghostly, and somewhat mediocre. Should I expect anything less on a day like today? Other women have meet-cutes. Me? Meet-kills. I’ve hit a new low.”

“The shadow of his stubble gives him a lumberjack feel. That jawline though? I’ve never understood the appeal of chiseled jaws, but now I can approve such artistry … and functionality. He could slice through icicles with that thing.”

“I expect him to smile at my words, but instead, his gaze is … smoldering. I’ve never been smoldered before, and it’s quite the heady feeling.”

“I shouldn’t have sneaked up on you.” “It’s a habit of yours.” “Yeah.” He tugs me toward the senior center doors. “You’re definitely becoming a habit.”

“You, Greta, can never be too much. In fact …” His knuckle is a whisper along my jaw. “I don’t think I can get enough.”

“You’re beautiful, Greta. And if you’re doubting yourself, I’m not doing a good job as your hype guy.”

About Last Christmas by: Rachel Scott McDaniel

📖Greta and Leo had one perfect evening together and then he ghosted her. One year later, he's back looking for her help.

Oh my lanta. This might be my new favorite Christmas book of all time. This story is filled with humor, Christmas and charm. The supporting characters round out the story with just the right amount of sass.

Things I loved 😍 (spoiler free)

-Everything about Greta and Leo was magical. Strangers to more is my favorite
(it's my own love story)
- Readers are treated to more than one Christmas season
- Filled with Christmas parades, sledding and tree trimming
- Small town goodness! I love when a place feels warm and cozy and the residents feel like friends
-the best group of elderly friends
-Lots of humor!
- There's a visit to an eccentric place with some very fabulous moments I will not spoil.

There's a beautiful love story and also a strong emphasis on the generosity. I loved seeing the focus on helping others at Christmas.

I am absolutely devastated this one is over. I can't wait to reread it.

Rachel Scott McDaniel has hit it out of the park with About Last Christmas. She has become an instant read for me, and though this is a shift in genres, this contemporary Christmas story was spot on perfection.

This book has all the small-town charm to rival Hallmark movies. With comical quirky characters like Mitzy and her doll and Adelaide trying to find the next big treasure, my heart was totally invested in this small town. Greta is the caregiver to her grandparents, who raised her. One fateful night, Greta runs into Leo. In the perfect meet-cute situation, they decided to meet up at a later date, but when Leo is a no-show and Greta’s grandma passes away, things take a turn. When Leo shows up months later, they get their second chance at romance. With witty banter, swoon, secret Santa, and antique nativity hunt- this is the perfect Christmas read.

Watching Greta work through her struggle of being the “Queen of Spades” and get to the heart of the issue was touching. I loved seeing Greta in her element, hunting down antiques. Leo has his own things he is working through

This second-chance romance was the perfect sweet, kisses-only romance with just the right level of swoon.

Some favorite quotes that made me die laughing:

“That jawline though? I’ve never understood the appeal of chiseled jaws, but now I can appreciate such artistry…and functionality. He could slice through icicles with that thing.”

“I shaved my legs last night. My leg hairs no longer hold up my socks. How’s that for productivity?”

Ya’ll know I’ve gushed about Rachel Scott McDaniels historical fiction books. I absolutely love the two that I’ve read. When I saw she was releasing a Christmas book this year AND that it was a genre jump to contemporary romance, I was sooo excited! I immediately signed up for an ARC and I was delighted when I was given the chance to read and review it! This is such an adorable book!

Things I loved:

🎄SO many funny quotes
🎄ALL the Christmas elements. Parades, sledding, small-town Christmas festivities, vintage nativities, Christmas games, secret Santa, the spirit of giving
🎄Grief representation
🎄Caregiver representation

Such a fun Christmas book! If you’re looking for a story to get you in the Christmas spirit, this is PERFECT. There are so many “Christmassy” elements!

Last Christmas, Greta and Leo hit it off after running into each other (literally) at the
small-town Christmas festival. A brief evening surrounded by the wonder of the Holiday sparks an interest they plan to pursue. But when Leo stands Greta up and the night ends in disaster, she spends the next year battling grief and moving on. Except one year later—the holiday season returns— along with Leo searching for a vintage Christmas nativity. About last Christmas? What happened that night? The next few weeks take them on a journey of realization and delightful holiday fun.

About the book

🤶White Christmas (the movie)

Just when I thought Rachel Scott McDaniel’s writing couldn’t get any better, she pulls a genre switcheroo and PERFECTS the modern Christmas romcom! Everything I love about Rachel’s writing is featured in a brand new way— hilarity, heart, perfect pacing, swoony romance, and a plot that keeps you guessing until you cheer at a great happy ending! This Ohio girl loved the small town rural Ohio setting too! And can somebody somewhere please find me a Leo? Because he is modern romcom hero goals! The romance in this one is SIZZLING! Best of all, Greta and Leo face real-life relationship struggles amidst real-life circumstances and find happiness in the sweetest way! And with a nod to the caregivers and first responders that make the world better, this story has plenty of heart. Don’t miss out on Rachel’s genre switch because, like always, this one is 5 STAR GOLD!

This book brought all the holiday feels--and then some. I really appreciated how we're given an authentic look at how it feels to be a caretaker for someone you love. Naturally, I loved the fact that our heroine also owned an antique store--but I wasn't prepared for the emotions in her dealings to mirror some of my own regrets.

Five stars for this holiday romance that, while fiction, reflects a whole lot of real life.

“About Last Christmas” by Rachel Scott McDaniel is as fun, sweet, and heart-warming as hot chocolate with sprinkles!

This entertaining novel features a second chance romance, quirky small-town charm, and a hilarious cast of eccentric characters. Antique store owner Greta has such a vibrant voice with her witty, self-deprecating humor and the caregiver representation she brings to the page grounds this rom-com with a poignancy that’s both relatable and endearing.

If you fancy a story with sledding, swooning, and secret Santa shenanigans, About Last Christmas is sure to be your cup of cocoa!

After reading Rachel’s historical romances last year, I was eagerly awaiting a new release. Even more so when I saw that it was a contemporary Christmas romance.

I was so excited to read this book! I know McDaniel can write wonderful historical stories, so it was so fun to read this contemporary Christmas book from her. I loved the characters and the setting with the feeling of a small town during the Christmas season. Greta and Leo meet, share an immediate connection, and then he disappears on her right before Christmas and on what turned out to be the worst night of her life. So when he shows up months later, she is determined not to fall for him. She quickly learns that may be harder than she thought as she agrees to help him with a special holiday project if he can help her as well.

This story is a sweet holiday romance that I am happy to add to my annual holiday reading list.

I received an early copy and have expressed my honest opinions.
