I have SO MANY CAVEATS attached to this review (as comes with any D. Dove book, let's be real). This is not a novella I would rec broadly however, for the right audience, this erotic little morsel was completely and unironically kind of fantastic.
Serial killer meet-cute with black cat/golden retriever energy. Except its a D. Dove book and 5 doves on the dove scale so like, actually proper fucked and not the sort of morally grey behaviour you can just conveniently excuse.
Unconventional HEA between two unrepentant killers who find their perfect match in each other.
“Is anything off the table?” Conan asked.
Lam smiled, wide and dark, looking up at him. “No life- threatening injuries. You?”
“Exsanguination,” Conan said immediately with a smile.
A laugh startled its way free. “That’s leaving me a lot of room,” Lam said.
“I hope enough to satisfy,” Conan replied.

Listen, blood play is one of my all time favorite kinks in fiction and this one did not disappoint. I really enjoyed this! It was a quick read that kept me entertained the whole way through. I wish it was longer so I could get more of Lam and Conan! I want more of their story ASAP.

at this point i think d dove is an auto read author for me and idk what to feel about that lmao. great little read for halloween! i'd pay good money to get another story with these two, especially if it meant seeing how they navigate life and lam's "extracurricular" activities together.

This book was short, dark and delicious in a depraved and wild way. D. Dove never fails to write the best unhinged characters! Lam as a serial killer is dark and depraved as he plays with his victims, enjoying their pain and suffering. When he meets Conan, he may finally have met a man who is willing to hurt for him. Conan is just a dark and depraved, happy to suffer for Lam but also give him what he needs. These two and twisted and perfect for each other! This is listed as an unconventional HEA, which it is as this isn’t romance, and these men have no redemption arc. They are serial killers so the “HEA” is tailored to them specifically.
I wouldn’t mind reading more from these two if I’m honest!!

This is a very dark story with Serial Un-Alivers. There is a HEA but it's noted as unconventional because even though these guys end up together there is no redemption for them 🤣 they are unapologetically stabby and are not running off into the sunset on a white horse...they are likey sharpening knives under dark bridges 🤷🏻♀️ so check your TWs before heading in and if your cool with stabby guys joining up to create some seriously spicy times you will love this one 🫣

Lam is singlehandedly taking out would be predators night by night. They look at him and see someone they can easily take advantage of. That assumption would be wrong though as he quickly flips the tables taking what he wants and then disposing of them when he is done. His game is getting a bit boring and predictable though until he runs into Conan. He thinks Conan is just like the rest of them, that is until Conan surprises Lam by reading him like a book and willing giving Lam what he desperately needs...Conan's blood under Lam's fingers...
This book is just a giant FAFO where Lam is concerned and then there is our feral stray puppy Conan who is just along for the ride as long as he gets a Fluffy bed after! It's one of those "There is a lid for every pot" relationships and I would totally be down for revisiting these two and their uh "shenanigans" 😈 as a duo now!

омг? це взагалі не те, що я очікувала? я в захваті!
я обожнюю всілякі прикольні power dynamics, а тут їх galore — до того ж у такому класному виконанні! також цікаво було почитати щось дійсно heavy on knife/blood play, бо в інших творах воно якщо і є, то лиш дрібочки, а тут суттєво так. мені особливо сподобалось й те, що тут не було пафосно-дешевого зображення тропу вбивця/вбивця. that is, гг1 дійсно серійний вбивця зі своїми філософськими до цього замашками типу "мені подобається відчувати їхній страх", "люблю дивитись на зміну їхнього обличчя, коли з агресора вони перетворюються в жертву" і т.д., але гг2, хоч і має за собою схожі грішки (вбивства) просто робив це за потреби і особливих почуттів до цього не має + робить це не часто. такий собі freak4freak вийшов, де потреби кожного чудово complement each other, а в повітрі витає злагода й розуміння, лол. душу продала б за сиквел, де гг трошки серйозніше облаштуються одним з одним, щоб побачити, що з того вийде... всі ті сцени відбулись протягом кількох годин, камон, НАМ ТРЕБА БІЛЬШЕ

Honestly, I’m a little disappointed in this one.
Generally, D.Dove’s longer works have been all misses, and the shorter ones all hits. This is the first shorter work that has been a miss for me.
Cop Out made me deeply uncomfortable, Haze made me very anxious. So, I know D. Dove can pack a punch with darker themes. This just felt kinda vapid? Maybe I’m just completely over the MM serial killer trend. I’ve been just underwhelmed with the whole killer x killer trope, it always seems to be a little (or a lot) cheesy.
I do think a single POV could have really helped, added a little suspense. Because I was really just a tad bit bored.
I do love that D. Dove has a little anti-AI statement in the front matter. I hope to see more and more author with anti-AI sentiments adopting this. Its a lot easier than trawling through social media, front matter, websites etc to verify authors’ stance on AI.

This was too short! That ending was so sweet, and I wanted to see Conan and Lam settle into something together. Maybe even move to another place and dispose of people together, depending on Lam's urges since he seems to have that more than Conan.
Surprisingly sweet with dark background vibes. Wished this was a full-length novel.

I don’t even know if I can classify this as a romance. I guess so? It’s DARK and twisted, and definitely has some elements of horror, even. But it’s definitely captivating.
A serial killer finally meets his match in this ~80 page novella. It’s high-violence, high-heat, and high-intensity! There’s extreme blo*d play and pain play in this one, for sure.
If you want something chilling but also darkly sexy this spooky season, then this is definitely a good one to pick up!
