Playmaker or Heartbreaker: A Sweet Hockey Season Romcom

Rate this book
A fake date. One bed. Playoffs. Falling for him? Not on the spreadsheet.

Playmaker or Heartbreaker is a sweet, dual-POV, closed-door romcom perfect for fans of Emma St. Claire, Katie Bailey, and Leah Brunner. No third-act breakup, mild language—just swoony tension, slow-burn banter, and emotional payoff without the spice. Expect a healing arc, a WAG baptism, and a second chance the whole team is ready to buzz in for.

She’s starting fresh with a new hockey job to steady her life. He’s inches from the Cup—no distractions… until she cracks his perfect plan.

Mel Boyd can wrangle logistics. What she can’t file away is the family drama that spirals into a fake relationship with the Tahoe West Panthers’ coach.

Yep. That happened.

And she should avoid him. He sees her in ways she’s not ready for.
But he’s also the ankle-saving meet-cute stuck in her head, fizzing through her.

Sean Murphy doesn’t do messy. Not mid-playoffs. Not with the team’s new hire.

One small favor, her sass getting under his skin… It was supposed to be neat, temporary, strictly for optics. Then it blows up into a PR storm, and the tidy playbook in his head goes flying.

Now the man who sets the rules is breaking one for her, and the season he thought he could control is colliding with the woman he kissed.

Between game plans, a one-bed situation, and a meddling team, sparks fly past defenses. The real risk isn’t losing the championship—it’s falling… and there’s no spreadsheet for that.

Being laid off from her job, Melanie Boyd feels burdened with responsibilities and fears of being a failure, but to get her mind off things, she goes on a date with a guy from work, and they end up at an ice rink. Mel gets into a little accident and twists her ankle, which is examined by a handsome, broody stranger. Lucky for her, she’ll never see him again and goes on with her life, getting hired to work for the local hockey team. And her boss? The man who saved her ankle and made her heart flip.

Sean Murphy is the head coach for the Tahoe West Panthers, and he takes his job very seriously. He has a lot to prove for being one of the youngest in his field, so messing around is not an option. That is, until Melanie shows up with her spreadsheets and sass, and before he knows it, he’s not only kissed her but he’s fake-dating her. It was supposed to be for only one night, but his pesky, guarded heart can’t help but fall for her.

I’ve been sitting here trying to think up a title that can compare to this one that doesn’t sound awkward or make me laugh every time I read it, but I honestly can’t think of one, so Playmaker or Heartbreaker it is. 😆

This was a sweet story. I liked the characters, their friends & siblings, and their relationship. Thank the Lord there wasn’t a third-act breakup, or I would’ve chucked my iPad at the wall. Nothing gets me more irritated than those annoying, melodramatic third-act breakups that didn’t have to happen if they had just talked like adults and figured out what was causing them to spiral or run away. Sorry, I’m getting sidetracked. 😅

Anyway, although it was cheesy to the point I was rolling my eyes at times (but maybe it’s because I’m still warming up to romance novels. Don’t worry, I’m getting there 😉), the romance was cute (closed-door, thank God 😅), the writing was easy to read, and the plot was actually interesting, especially with the addition of hockey. I don’t know if it’s true to how the game works because I’m not a hockey fan, but the author seems to know more than I ever will about the sport, so I’ll just take her word for it. ☺👍🏼

The only thing I didn’t like in the story was that both Sean and Mel had a selfish, passive-aggressive parent who made me shake my head and gasp at their audacity. The nerve of some people! 😂

So if you are looking for a book with a closed-door hockey, age-gap romance, mild language, and uses the fake-dating trope, then this book is for you! 💛

3.25🌟, 1 (closed-door romance) 🌶️

Playmaker or Heartbreaker is a slow-burn hockey romance with charm, light humor, and a gentle, minimal-spice romance.

Sean and Mel share sweet chemistry, with flirty banter and tender moments that make their connection enjoyable, even if the emotional depth occasionally feels uneven.

Mel is confident yet vulnerable, and Sean is steady and protective, creating a comforting dynamic. Most of the tension comes from external obstacles rather than the couple themselves, and while the fake-dating setup is familiar, it’s still entertaining and heartwarming.

The story blends workplace tension with lighthearted moments, making it an easy, enjoyable read. While it may not be the most intense romance, it’s a feel-good story with lovable characters and a satisfying, gentle slow-burn that readers seeking a soft, sweet romance will appreciate.

Okay so on paper this should’ve been a five-star read for me — hockey coach, workplace romance, age gap… like hello?? All my favorite tropes! But something about this one just didn’t hit 😬

First off, I could not believe these characters were supposed to be in their 20s and 40s. They acted like high schoolers half the time — the banter, the drama, the weird sleepover with the pillow wall (??) had me cringing instead of swooning.

Sean had zero depth, Mel was… there, I guess. I kept waiting to connect with one of them and it just never happened. And don’t even get me started on how they went from awkward coworkers to engaged within the play off period 😭 like, do you even know each other??

The hockey parts were solid though — I’ll give it that. Probably the only reason I even finished it.

Overall? Thought I was getting a mature, emotional, slow-burn hockey romance… ended up with a YA-level situationship in adult clothing 💀

Mel’s feels a little out of her luck when she’s laid off from her job. That is, until she lands a job with the local hockey team, the Tahoe West Panthers. Sean is the head coach for the team and has a lot to prove. A one time date turned into fake dating. Emotions start to stir for these two, so maybe the fake relationship could turn real?

The plot was easy to keep up with. The chemistry between these two was amazing. I loved their reading their interactions with each other and those closest to them.

I love Lila’s writing, it’s for those who want a closed door type of romance read. She always adds on the banter between the MCs, which ALWAYS without fail, gets me hooked. Thanks to Lila for allowing me to read this amazing story of Sean and Mel. Keep up the writing Lila 🤍

Playmaker or Heartbreaker is Lila Marlow’s first sports romance set that occurs in the hockey world with the Tahoe West team. This story is considered a closed-door romance, level 3. Readers are introduced to Sean Murphy, Tahoe West head coach and Melanie Boyd, recently unemployed office assistant.

Melanie begins the story by announcing her jobless state in the very first page of the book, which sets up the background story of Melanie and her sister, Samantha, who lives with her. Mel heads out for the evening on a date to get her mind off life, where through a few odd occurrences and one injured ankle, she accidentally meets Sean at the hockey rink. Head Coach Sean can’t get Melanie off his mind, so imagine his surprise when he literally crashing into her one Monday morning when she is coming out of the men’s room. Mel has found a job with Tahoe West hockey team and it will entail her spending time with Sean. Melanie and Sean both come from families with dysfunctional and dependency issues. Lila shares these issues at several times and in different ways, but with great consideration for the reader. She offers content warning before the book begins, so that readers are aware and given the chance to consider if this book is appropriate for their reading.

Sean has to work through not only his personal issues, but those of this family who have decided to crash into his life. Melanie has to work through not only her issues but the fact that her parents have returned to her home and brought their baggage alone as well. Melanie has to battle her mother’s constant interference in her life and the negativity to discover herself. Sean proves to be a calming force in Melanie’s life and a rock for her. The story leads the reader through not only the hockey team’s end of the season cup games, but romance as well. Watch out for the turns and enjoy the ride while Sean and Mel look toward the future.

Overall, I would suggest this book as a very good read. The story for Sean and Melanie is a great read, but the side stories of the family members add an extra level as well. There were a couple smaller scenes that I thought were cute involving photo shoots that I felt could have been left out, but I have seen similar ideas in other sports books so I guess it get it. I will definitely be reading additional books by Lila Marlow.

Based on the What’s brewing? notes at the end, I think we can expect to read more about the Tahoe West hockey team players and their romances. I am looking forward to following the players as they embrace their journeys and come following the coach and players we have met already.

I received an advance review copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

I absolutely loved Playmaker or Heartbreaker by Lila Marlow! Lila is a new to me author that quickly made her way to my favorites list. Sean and Mel’s story drew me in. I didn’t want to put it down and ended up finishing in a single day. I loved this book for what it didn’t have almost as much as I loved it for what it did have. I loved the chemistry between Sean and Mel. They had so many fun, flirty moments but also lots of sweet, tender moments too. I found it refreshing that the majority of conflict and drama in the story comes from outside forces and not between the couple themselves. I was also glad that their relationship wasn’t a forbidden workplace romance.

Sean was steady and solid, a golden retriever with a protective streak. He anchored Mel while also empowering her. I love how he saw her. He could read her so well. He became her safe place, her calm in the chaos. The strength he gave her throughout the book was almost tangible. He was so charming and thoughtful. He respected Mel’s boundaries and never pushed her for more than she was comfortable with. Sean was completely swoony, radiating a sexy confidence that practically leapt off the pages.

Mel was sassy and strong. I like how she could be confident, clapping back at the players’ teasing remarks, but also vulnerable with Sean, letting him see her insecurities and struggles. It was sweet to see her bring life back to Sean’s world and give him meaning outside of hockey.

Some of my favorite things:
💛Her luggage mishap - “My brain stalled somewhere between Do I help? Or do I pretend I didn’t see the hot-pink thong doing cartwheels?”
🧡”Just be yourself. The world will adjust.”
💛 “I’ve got her back, her front, and her side. I’m an all-terrain boyfriend.”
🧡How the team and the WAGs rallied around Sean and Mel
💛Skating lessons
🧡When he makes her his girl
💛Team photo ops
🧡Mel’s sass account
💛”Carrying her like that was my real championship moment.”
🧡Cutie, Coach Dazzler, Coach Calm-and-Sure, Coach Charming
💛Him traveling with her orange barrette
🧡Motorcycle rides
💛Steamy kisses

If you are looking for spice, miscommunication or third act breakups, this isn’t the book for you. But if you like a cozy, closed door, slow burn romance with sizzling chemistry and banter, add Playmaker or Heartbreaker to your TBR.

📚Playmaker or Heartbreaker

Blurb:

My Thoughts:
I think this is a cute, low-stakes read and would recommend it for someone looking for a lighthearted, easy romance novel!
Playmaker or Heartbreaker is a cute closed door hockey romance. Mel and Sean meet when Mel has an accident skating at the hockey rink. Sean can’t keep his mind off of her. 6 weeks later Mel starts working at the hockey rink. What started as fake dating ends up being falling hard and fast. If you love a good hockey romance this is definitely a good and fast read.

I received this book from NetGalley and thought it was cute. It follows a woman that takes an analytic job with an NHL hockey team and the team's head coach. They have a little meet cute and have to work together. It's your standard hockey romance with cute banter and sweet moments.

I wish I could rate the book higher, but some of the dialogue was difficult to understand.

*Let me insert this here because speaking of things difficult to understand. Why did it seem like this man was in full gear during the hockey games? After one game, it mentions how he's taking off his helmet and gloves. He's the COACH. Why is he in skates, helmet, and gloves? That question has plagued me since I read it.*

Cont'd: It's like the author kind of sometimes forgot the readers weren't privy to the character's minds. I felt like I was standing on the outside trying to piece things together sometimes. The flow of the book was also a little choppy. There were some scenes that I wish had a little more to fully flesh them out, and I wish the characters were a little more fleshed out. There were several moments when I couldn't distinguish between the mmc or the fmc. Their voices tended to mingle.

There were two scenes in the book that kind of "annoyed" me. I don't know if annoy is the right word, but they felt weird. Without spoilers, it's the two photo scenes. The first one felt awkward because they were dressing as teenagers. Then, the proposal. I really felt he only proposed to save face over the situation with his dad, and I felt horrible for the fmc. She definitely deserved better, and she deserved a better speech than the one he gave. But that's just my opinion.

Overall, it's not a terrible book. I've read way worse. If you're looking for a closed-door very low spice book, I'd recommend it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️/ ️🌶️

I was so happy to have another book by Lila Marlow in my hands. Playmaker or Heartbreaker was a wonderful book that helped me escape life for a little bit. This book is classic Lilah, meaning the relationships are front and center, the romance is sweet and sizzling, but kept clean and pure, and watching our MCs fall for each other has you swooning over and over again.

I felt for Melanie from the beginning. She has just been laid off and is beginning to spiral in self doubt. While on a date with a coworker she gets hurt while ice skating. Maybe her luck is changing as a handsome stranger shows up to check her ankle out. Turns out this handsome stranger is her new boss at her new job. I loved watching Melanie come out of her shell, speak up for herself, and go after the things she wants.

Sean is our handsome stranger and coach of the Tahoe West Panthers. When he sees Melanie again, he is determined to not get distracted by her as he is still proving his abilities as a young coach. However, situations arise at work that he finds himself in need of a fake relationship to help keep those who wish to see him fail at bay. Sean is guarded, but slowly those walls break down. Seeing him open up with Melanie was an absolute joy.

Lilah has written such a cute, sweet, and romantic story. She wrote the hockey elements so well, obviously either a fan of the sport or did her research. Beyond Melanie and Sean’s relationship, Lilah gives us some amazing side characters who bring so much to the story, both good and bad.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

"It seemed I’d been waiting for this and didn’t know it until now."

I liked this book so much that I almost was late to the bus this morning because I was reading this and couldn't put it down!

Mel's got a new job with a hockey team whose head coach is a yummy chocolate-eyed hottie. Neither of them is searching for love, but sometimes love comes unexpectedly!

This is a slowburn romance, the overall tempo is quite slow but somehow I liked it a lot. The build up of the romance is slow, a kiss lingering eye contact here, a kiss there... But it was sweet and lovely.

I loved how there was no third act break up. Mel and Sean are so strongly together even though there are some obstacles.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Pov: dual, 1st person
Heat: closed doors
Pacing: slowburn
Communication: mostly healthy communication
Third act:
Ending:

Main characters:
* Age gap
* Cinnamon roll hero

What?
* Fake dating
* Forced proximity
* Sports romance: hockey

Where?
* Traveling together
* Workplace romance

Drama?
* Difficult past
* Family drama

"Playmaker or Heartbreaker" by Lila Marlow is a charming read that really dives deep into the slow-burn romance between a head coach and a player development assistant. From the first chapter, I was drawn into their world, where the tension and chemistry between the characters simmer subtly beneath the surface.

Marlow crafts the characters with great care, portraying their professional dilemmas and personal struggles in a way that's relatable and engaging. The closed-door aspect of the romance is handled beautifully, allowing the story to focus on the emotional connection rather than the physical. I found myself rooting for them, eagerly turning pages to see how their relationship would develop.

The pacing feels just right. While it takes time to build up to the pivotal moments between the characters, it doesn’t drag on, which kept my interest alive throughout. The dialogue flows naturally, and the interactions between the coach and assistant highlight their chemistry in a sweet yet compelling way.

Overall, “Playmaker or Heartbreaker” offers a wonderful blend of sports, ambition, and romance. Marlow’s writing is engaging, making it easy to connect with the characters and their journey. If you're looking for a heartfelt and wholesome romance that unfolds gradually, this book is definitely worth your time!

This was a 3.25 star read for me.

This was a short cozy sports romance set in the world of professional hockey, the story follows a fake dating setup between a head coach and his assistant with an age gap trope. The chemistry between Mel and Sean feels natural, and their slow intimate connection is realistic.

Both, Mel and Sean are older and more self-aware and they don’t rush into intimacy, and that slower progression made their relationship feel more realistic. It’s refreshing to see a romance that isn’t all about instant passion. There was obvious attraction but even the first kiss was well over the 50% mark.

The book also touches on more serious topics, such as family trauma and personal healing, without ever becoming too heavy. Mel is dealing with the fallout of her parents’ financial collapse and a difficult, emotionally draining relationship with her mother. Sean, on the other hand, is learning to stop projecting the pain from his past, particularly from his father’s issues. Their journeys are not dramatic in the usual over the top romance way. Despite the deeper themes, the tone of the book remains cozy, romantic, and hopeful. The pacing is quick and the characters are engaging.

I wanted to thank NetGalley for this ARC.

This book was such a fun and cute read! It took me longer to get through than I was anticipating. This hockey romance is different than most you will find, since the mmc is the COACH not a player.

WARNING! This is a SLOOOOOOOWW burn. It's also a closed door romance- just to let y'all know.

The plot progresses at a decent pace, and I do feel that characters pretty well thought out. I think that I would have been inclined to rate it higher if the burn wasn't quite so slow. The pace was also interesting in that it felt super fast and super slow at the same time. Oh and the whole book you are building up to if they will make it to the Stanley cup finals, and then it just kind of fizzles out? All these combined knocked it down two stars for me.

That being said - I really enjoyed Mel and Sean's story and how they are both able to help each other grow. They help each other overcome family and societal obstacles and we see that support in a way that really should be more common IRL.

In conclusion, if you love a slow burn, closed door romance, character development, sports, family drama, this is for you. It's a sweet age gap romance!

This book was an absolute joy to read—one of those rare stories that had me grinning from ear to ear, so much so that by the end, my cheeks genuinely ached from smiling. It’s a feel-good, heartwarming tale that wraps you up in a cozy embrace and doesn’t let go until the final page.

The characters were instantly lovable, the humor was charming without trying too hard, and the emotional moments landed beautifully. There’s a genuine warmth that radiates from the story, making it one of those books you don’t just read, but feel.

The only downside—and it’s worth mentioning—is that the editing could use some tightening. There are noticeable inconsistencies, particularly in the early chapters, that momentarily pulled me out of the experience. Whether it’s character details that don’t quite line up or minor plot hiccups, a careful revision would make a world of difference in polishing an already wonderful story.

That said, once the narrative finds its footing, it becomes an absolute gem. If you’re looking for a story that lifts your spirits and leaves you glowing with happiness, this one is definitely worth picking up.

This is a sweet hockey romance set in California (Sacramento area). Definitely has some Hallmark like vibes but with a bit more.
Mel is dealing with life the best way she can. She is the oldest daughter who takes on the responsibility of just about everything, and when she loses her job due to a merger, she doesn't what to do. By chance, she gets a position that follows her interest, but would be working with a NHL team (though she never was interested in hockey before). She has a few run ins with the handsome coach who may help her more than they both realize.
Sean is still early on in his NHL coaching career with a chance to the Stanley Cup. He doesn't have time for distractions, especially from the new Player Development Assistant with the most intriguing eyes. But there is something there that can't be ignored.
To get her nagging mom at bay (or hopefully so), Mel ropes in Sean to be her fake boyfriend, but with some perks. But when the two get closer together, the sparks fly on and off the ice.
This does deal with discussions of rehab (alcoholism), familial manipulation and divorce. Still a fun little read that I could not put down.

Thank you BookSirens and Lila Marlow for this eARC! Lila and Sean were a sweet romance to swoon over!

There’s such a gentle, easy teasing back and forth between them. It lights them up and can’t stay away from one another. Without overthinking, they live in the moment and call or see each other about any little thing. While they are tentative to really try things beyond fake dating because of his job, they go at a pace that works really well for them, and it’s a gradual trust and bond they share. I really liked that between them!

Sean is older but still light hearted and fun. He wants things to be as open and honest as possible, so he’s an MMC I really admire. He clearly is in it for keeps with her, and I liked how quickly he let her know he wanted things for real with her, regardless of family ridicule or public scorn! My only thing I will say is I was surprised how quickly things happened at the end! But their HEA was so sweet and made me so happy to see them both win big in love and happiness 🥰

Refreshing! This is the first book I’ve read by Lila Marlow, and now I can honestly say I’m a fan. I really enjoyed how the romance was sweet and slow, without being all about sex. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but this felt like such a nice change of pace. I’m a big fan of hockey romances, and I loved that this one focused on the coach instead of the players—it gave the story a fresh take on the hockey romances. I could also relate to Mel, which made the story draw me in even more. The story flows so smoothly and wasn't slow, I didn't want to stop reading to do my normal life. I can't wait to read her next book. That said, I'm not sure the author is 100% up on the world of hockey. For example, I noted in a few of the scenes the coach was in full gear as it showed him leaving the ice to remove his gear and shower. That didn't make sense.

I had the privilege of reading this ARC prior to release and am voluntarily writing this review. Thank you @NetGalley and @Florthier Press

Mel is a rookie development assistant stepping into the chaotic world of NHL playoffs, and Sean is the grumpy, broody coach everyone fears but can’t help but notice. Their fake relationship started as a strategic move, but it quickly turned into something neither of them expected. The banter between them had me grinning like crazy and the slow burn moments made my heart skip.
I absolutely loved how the story balanced hockey season intensity with lighthearted, swoony romance. The family and friend dynamics were super cute and added so much warmth to the story. Sean’s grumpiness melting around Mel was everything, and the way Mel held her own while being sweet was so refreshing. Honestly, this book is a perfect mix of laughs, tension, and heart-melting moments. It kept me hooked from start to finish and I couldn’t stop smiling.
Thank you so much hayling bookstorm for the free ARC!

Set in the world of professional hockey, this short, cozy romance explores a fake dating trope between a head coach and his assistant. The age gap dynamic is present, but the story truly shines through the natural chemistry and slow-building intimacy between Mel and Sean. Their maturity and self-awareness allow for a refreshing relationship progression that feels authentic. It's a welcome departure from insta-love romances, with their first kiss occurring well into the story. Beyond the romance, the book delves into serious topics such as family trauma and personal healing without becoming overly heavy. Mel navigates the fallout of her parents' financial struggles and a difficult relationship with her mother, while Sean works to overcome the pain from his past with his father. These journeys are handled with sensitivity, maintaining the book's overall cozy, romantic, and hopeful atmosphere. The pacing is brisk, and the characters are captivating.
Thank you to the author, the publishers and NetGalley, for providing this ARC.

This is a cutesy romance between the head coach and a team analyst of a hockey team. The story started off strong with the fmc and mmc having a meet cute moment before she was employed with the team and before they even knew who the other person was.
The issues for me are the dialogue between the Sean and Mel can get very clunky and confusing at times. It feels like you are only getting bits and pieces and the author forgot the other part of the conversation. Important scenes were missed completely for example Sean proposing felt very rushed. They never said I love you to each other on the page. Mel said she was in love with him during an emotionally charged moment where she was ranting about her mother. Mel told her dad she loved Sean but never was there a Sean I love you or Mel I love you.

Overall it was a cute story but needs some dialogue changed to help smooth the story out so it flows better.

I enjoyed Lila Marlow’s PLAYMAKER or HEARTBREAKER!
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an advanced copy.

According to The Writing Gals, this book is considered Clean & Wholesome content, with a heat level of 3, an actual “Closed-Door” to what’s happening on the other side, dual POV, with no third-act break up, and mild language.

It is a captivating story about:
🏒Really being seen and heard
❣️Emotional healing
🏒Serious Sisterhood
❣️No one deserving free rent in your head!
🏒The best moments in life weren’t the big ones,
❣️but the small ones…you’d do over and over again.
🏒The fluttering in my chest kicked into a full-blown butterfly disco. 🦋🕺
❣️Forget butterflies 🦋🦋- a whole colony of mockingbirds flapped in my stomach. 🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛
🏒Terminal infatuation
❣️”Kiss me dizzy under the moonlight” 😘 🌛
🏒Hot, stormy, motorcycle-hockey guys 🏍️ 🏒
❣️Totally, head-over-heels smitten 😍
🏒Heart-melting 💗
❣️And so much more!❣️

I’m so impressed with Lila Marlow’s writing…again!! ❣️❣️

Playmaker or Heartbreaker is a cute closed-door, age gap, fake dating hockey romance.
To be honest, I had a hard time coming up with something to say in this review. The book was not bad at all, but it just fell flat for me. I thought Mel and Sean were sweet, but there was not as much emotional depth as I was hoping for, and it was very insta-lust with no real tension between them. A lot of reviews say this is a slow-burn but I thought it was the complete opposite: I found things moved very fast. From their insta-lust meetcute to fake dating to real dating, etc. I did think it had some well thought out hockey aspects, though some things were a bit confusing. For example, why was the coach showering after practice? Why was the inujured player watching the games at a bar? Also, I’m surprised she named the hockey teams the same as ones in real life (ie Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, etc).
Overall, this was a good book but not my favourite hockey romance.

Thank you to Netgalley and Florthier Press for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This book was such a fun surprise. I went in expecting a typical sports romance and ended up with a story that had way more heart and emotional depth than I anticipated. Sean is the perfect mix of charming disaster and quietly vulnerable, and Mel is the kind of female lead I always hope for—ambitious, sharp, and unwilling to shrink herself for anyone. Their chemistry is instant but the slow build of trust is what really hooked me.

Marlow balances the hockey world and the romance so well. The sports details feel real without being overwhelming, and the supporting cast actually adds to the story instead of distracting from it (I’m already hoping half of them get their own books). What I loved most was how the book handled vulnerability—both characters are trying so hard to outrun who people think they are, and their relationship forces them to confront those insecurities in a really satisfying way.

It’s swoony, emotional, funny in all the right places, and honestly just a great comfort read. If you like sharp banter and characters who actually grow, this one is worth picking up.

This was a sweet sports romance with a couple of the usual tropes: age-gap, cinnamon roll MMC, found family.

It's a clean closed door romance with some super light spice and mild language.

The relationship felt a little insta-love, I really liked the characters as a couple but their relationship felt super rushed from 'we're boyfriend/girlfriend' to 'I'm going to ask her to marry me to solve a media issue' - they weren't even living together, and they'd had barely any intimacy (and I don't mean sex but cuddling, getting to know each other, dates, etc.) before they were getting engaged, a quick marriage and then an epilogue that felt like a diary entry of we did this, then this, now this, the end.

I wanted to see more of the relationship development, like how Sean encouraged Mel to overcome her mother's jealousy, I wanted to see Mel grow into a confident and comfortable woman.

This aside, and taking the book how it is, it's sweet and wholesome.

This hockey romance was fun and an easy read! While the story has plenty of laugh-out-loud banter and swoony chemistry, it’s also layered with deeper themes—family tension, financial struggles, and the emotional weight of past trauma. Personally, I love storylines like that as they are more relatable to me. The female lead’s complicated relationship with her mother added a surprising amount of heart and reality.

The romance itself felt genuine—intimate without being overdone—and I liked that the physical side of their relationship developed naturally instead of being rushed. The spice level lands somewhere in the middle. There’s some adult language in this as well, so definitely be cautious on age-appropriateness for reading it.

Overall, this was a cozy, heartfelt, and relatable read with sharp wit, emotional depth, and just the right amount of heat. Perfect for anyone who loves a sports romance that goes beyond the bedroom and dives into real-life challenges and second chances.

One of my Top Three Romances Read in 2025

Lila brilliantly crafts a romantic storyline amidst the difficulties of life experiences that draws on work, familial meddling, the unexpected, and heartbreaks. Skillfully nuanced, I kept asking myself who is the playmaker and who is the heartbreaker here. Which, of course means I couldn’t put the book down. Sean, the head hockey coach for Tahoe West Panthers and Melanie (Mel), a new administrative hire, work for the same hockey team on its way to hopefully win The Cup. Against this exciting backdrop, they encounter struggles against old wounds that complicate their romantic journey. The question becomes will they or won’t they be available for each other when it counts?

Thus, Playmaker or Heartbreaker ranks as one of my top 3 books read for 2025. Highly recommend this great read. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
