This is amongst the worst books about sailing I’ve read and am still unclear who the book is aimed at. It isn’t particularly suitable for experienced sailors as it lacks any depth or detail regarding sailing experience. It’s not helpful to novice sailors or those thinking about getting in to sailing given the author’s general incompetence and potentially dangerous approach to sailing (grounding the boat at least 3 times). The author spends 300 pages largely complaining about things breaking, delays and his efforts to fix things while omitting any meaningful family dynamics or explanation of the journey his family undertook.
I too have always been a Jimmy Buffet fan. As such, you can’t help but dreaming about sailing away on a boat and living the island life for awhile. This book clearly depicts the harsh reality vs the dream. So many things you could never imagine, but told in a lighthearted, humorous way. I enjoyed it, but must admit I don’t think I would even go on a week long sailing charter after reading this. 🤭
This is a 1.7/5 🌟, at best. Redundant and tedious would be my heading for this review. If you have a dream of sailing for a year with your family and don't want to be talked out of it, don't read this book. I'm not sure why I kept listening and almost stopped at hour 5 but thought wth I only have 1.5 hrs to go.
