i think im stopping here. it bums me out cause i love Green Lantern and I had high hopes for this story. the world building feels like the writer wrote down common words and names in GL lore and put them in a hat and pulled them out. its not compelling and im just not interested anymore. :/

Just finished, and I think this series has finally lost me. The whole “colors” thread never really clicked for me in the last issue, and this one doubled down — adding even more lore and references that didn’t land. Instead of building tension or payoff, it felt like pieces of a puzzle I didn’t have the picture for.

Maybe if you’re steeped in Green Lantern history — all the Corps, the spectrum, the legacy characters — this might be rewarding. But without that depth of knowledge, it just left me detached. I found myself skimming instead of sinking in, which is never a good sign.

It’s clear a lot of thought went into expanding the “Absolute” corner of the DCU here, but the execution left me cold. Right now, it feels less like a story I’m engaged with and more like a mythology lesson that I can’t quite follow. This is my last of this run, which is sad because I really enjoyed the first several….

I wasn’t crazy about this issue either. I felt like the same issues of lacking meaningful, earned characterization or adding to the intrigue of the mystery of the story wasn’t here. I’m not sure if I want to continue the story. It’s just feels very minimal in terms of what’s working and lots of stuff isn’t really working. It’s been okay when it’s just the main green lanterns, which sucks since the beginning was great.

After a slow burn of a first arc, this issue starts a new story with a bang…or many bangs, squelches, and smashes. We get a much wider view of the Absolute cosmos, and it’s not great! I love how Ewing squeezes a century of philosophical thought into a four-panel page, too.

Oh this absolutely rocked. I can understand perfectly why this issue would be confusing, hell parts of it are still confusing to me, but there is a descriptor in this book for the way they two about the Oan and controller understandings of light: scripture. It’s all scripture, it’s how they perceive the universe and attempt to over complicate it to hell to work with it. And this issue we are fully engrossed in the scripture of the controllers, the antithesis to Oa. The controllers in fact sees Oa as a cult, with their perception of light going the opposite direction. Starting with Aur/Gold which they see as useless philosophy. Then it goes to Sur/green, which they see as action chained by notions of right and wrong coupled with inexperience to know their is no such thing. Then there is Rao/Red, which is seen as a way to hold peolle back and see the truth as dangerous, it’s a red flag. And then there is the one they hold above all else, Qard/the black star, which brings with it full understanding and pure will, if you allow it to.

Remember last issue we were introduced to Mogo as an agent of the controllers and user of Qard, this issue we get to see it in full action, as the group descends upon a planet full of plant based life forms where they have detected the influence of Oa in three beings. Unfortunately this world is made up of billions of beings, so finding three of them is a hard task. But Mogo and the ships filled with blackstars play into the philosophy that of their law is ignored, the sin of one becomes the sin of all. In a way they are now all facing judgement from Qard, and it’s not as nice as the Oan judgment. As the ships of the blackstars get closer they start scanning the world for signs of the gateway (which is the giant green lantern which goes down to recruit beings), they were unable to find that but they did detect the three green lanterns of the world coming up to face them. It’s interesting seeing seasoned lanterns with understanding go into a fight. They talk as if they are spouting scripture, how they need to remain without fear and dead is only an end state. But then we see how merciless the darkstars are as they deploy a black hand…especially when that black hand is Kilowog! One of the lanterns rushes in to fight, only for their mantra to “be without fear” to immediately fail as their head is smashed on kilowog’s hand. The two remaining lanterns believe they can use their corrective action to beat his chaotic actions. They move into a flanking position, but Kilowog sends out one of his attacks anyway. One of the lanterns tells the other to be without fear as he has already changed to an intangible state…but suddenly he feels his arm ripped off. Chaotic action, the power the universe runs on, seems to have beaten and ripped through any logic they have. The other lantern does not backdown, instead she yells out that judgement is in progress and sends off a powerful green beam of light that completely decapitates Kilowog. She believed the fight was over and could now take the other lantern back to safety in the hopes of repairing him. But suddenly a voice comes out from kilowog’s body…”There’s no hope. Hope is dead. There. Is only. WILL.” That wasn’t enough to kill Kilowog and his black hand energy was able to heal all the way from that much damage. The beings on the planet try and call back out to the blackstars to have mercy…until the wader of the planet finds out that a gateway has been discovered among their planet. The green lanterns were recruiting under their noses and have now doomed the entire planet: when the law of Qard is broken it must be corrected…which includes Mogo turning into a living Death Star and blowing up the entire planet with billions of lives without another thought. Even some of the other blackstars thought Mogo can be quite cold at times. But that doesn’t stop their mission, there was a gateway here and more than likely it got away. This has been a terrible introduction to a situation Earth and Jo will more than likely be dealing with quite soon. And if green lanterns with knowledge and experience are taken down this easily, how can Jo, who has no enlightenment, fair at all? WELL ACTUALLY, there may be a glimmer of hope after all. In the rubble of the planet Kilowog found a piece of the gateway, he indeed asked to go back inside his spacecraft he didn’t see the reason to rush…and then he witnessed his spacecraft filled with other blackstars explode in front of him with one red burst. Kilowog is looking pretty scared now as a red orb circles him and bashes him into a piece of space debris, and Tomar Re appears before him../seems he is a bit late and is not taking any crap from Kilowog. Tomar are is of the red level of light, when taught through the teachings of OA it becomes defensive in nature. You fain the power through displays of restraint, so it is never taught as a means to attack. EXCEPT, the “Re” in Tomar are stands for anomaly. He did not receive the red powers through OA…he stole it, and shows no restraint. In only mere seconds Kilowog is begging for his life as Tomar forms a giant box around him, then turns it into a small box and turns Kilowog into a cube, far beyond the ability to repair himself. Tomar then sends the box back to Mogo to send a message to the “face of steel.” And this is where the glimmer of hope comes in, Jo is just like Tomar…an anomaly. If the blackstars believes the green light level is held back by the concepts of right and wrong and the experience to know there is no such thing…then Jo is ahead of the curve!

As the issues comes to an end we see Mogo freak out for a second se the flash of red from boxed up kilowog goes onto his planets surface. We see the surface covered in bones as the narrator at the start of the issue preaching the scripture of the darkstars starts back up again. In a world where darkseid and anti life energy reign supreme, literally changing the moral fundamental curve of the universe, will still remains a to of those at the top of the food chain of power. The black stars still understand and use will (aka Mu), that is how Kilowog was able to will himself back to strength, which is why hope will have to be used by our heroes. We see the red box make its way on the planets surface until it reaches a tower and a throne room at the top with the creature with a “face of steel” ready to receive it. The being takes it well as they see it for what it is, one anomaly trying to het them to look on another direction. The blackstars have already noticed Jo, and an anomaly of the green level is more dangerous than Tomar could ever be…if it were allowed to grow. Suddenly the strange starfish creature on the beings chest piped up and asked if any of this should still be recorded. Apparently it is an organic recording device, but as it didn’t know the difference between scripture and confidential information…the controller crushed it rather than leave it as a liability. The controller decides to record the last bit of scripture themselves, and while I don’t full understand this last part, it seems they go into the very nature of the universe. How the world is bloody and terrible, and how what they WILL is correct compared to all the other understandings in the different levels of light. With this understanding, this is why those who reach gold can only rise to initiate, one cannot believe the Oan way is right and rise any higher, which is why there must only be one Abin of gold power and that is why sinestro determines that they must be the only one with that. That’s right! The metal controller (really more cyborg as he has an organic face) is sinestro and is seeking to be the only gold lantern in the world, the only one with true understanding, the only Abin.

Seeing other reviewers saying that this series was just a throw away of characters of GL lore and it’s just random puzzle pieces that don’t fit together bums me out.

This is finally clicking for me because everyone was so 1 dimensional but this isn’t just about the characters but really is world building. It’s very exciting for me at least because it twists the lore and I _hope_ it will payoff in the end.

Meh. I understand that this is a slow burn and lots of people are loving this series which is awesome! I just think it’s the weakest of the absolute universe and is losing me. I will say I love the art.

Unlike the other Absolute Universe titles that can pretty much work as "else world" without knowing much of the normal version, here you would need an encyclopedia to understand. And unfortunately I am not very familiar with the Green Lantern lore...

I am sorry but this issue just didn't do it for me. I don't think I'll read the issue that comes after #8 in case this trend continues.

I had liked the previous issues but this felt really out there and difficult to follow. I'm hopeful this is setting things up before returning to the familiar cast.

Realmente não sei o que pensar de toda essa trajetória do GL Absoluto, as vezes parece rumar para algo genial e muitas vezes soa apenas pretensioso.

Seven issues in and this title feels like a whole lot of world building and lore, but no actual story. What exactly is this book supposed to be about?
