This popular presentation of the spirituality and essential writings of Saint Francis of Assisi, one of the most revered of the spiritual masters, is part of the Crossroads Spiritual Legacy Series.
armstrong presents this as an introduction to st. francis rather than a true intellectual excavation or analysis, and in that way he is true to his project. many of his notes are interesting enough, even if they state the obvious, and i like the inclusion of and emphasis on biographical context. that said, armstrong glosses over (or simply doesn't comment on) some of the more challenging aspects of Francis' writing (for example, modern applications of his words on deprivation, self-annihilation, poverty, corporeal vileness), which is disappointing. anyway, overall the editorial work here is just fine (no more no less) and presents its generally amazing contents (the writings of francis himself) more or less effectively.
