Never Alone: Aura Cove Temporal Traveler

Neon nights. Simmering sabotage. Midlife is one spicy meatball.

When a sinister force crashes her mother’s custody hearing and Neve realizes she’s being watched, she does what any self-respecting midlife mystic would clutches her geode, whispers a plea to Mercury retrograde, and jumps.

She lands in 1984, inside Carmen, a single mom waiting tables at an Aura Cove fine-dining hotspot where sabotage simmers and danger is disguised by charm. A slick predator controls the restaurant, and a brilliant, neurodivergent chef is trapped under his thumb.

To set things right, Neve must topple a toxic power structure, protect the one who’s stolen her heart, and help Chef Enzo Bellini reclaim his voice. But meddling with the past has a price, and Neve’s clock is ticking.

Wow! This third installment in the Aura Cove Temporal Traveler series begins with Nevermore LaRue questioning everything she thought she knew about her life and her family. It's hard to write a review that discusses with the plot without spoilers for the first books, but it's safe to say that here we see a newly-resolute Neve determined to solve the mystery of what happened to her parents all those years ago. Accompanied by Peregrine, formerly a con man but now somehow an African Gray parrot, something wise-cracking Perry is still coming to terms with, Neve is willing to do anything to find the truth, no matter the cost. Jumping into the past takes a huge toll on her and she has little control over exactly where and when she lands, plus it seems as though one of the requirements for her travel is that she and Perry help right a karmic wrong while they pursue their investigation. In this case, Neve finds herself inhabiting the life of a single mother who supports her family as a waitress, working at the side of a brilliant but erratic chef in 1984 coastal Florida. Carmen's little boy has asthma but his medicine and treatments are so expensive; they desperately need for the restaurant to succeed, but Chef Enzo just can't seem to get out of his own way. Can Neve's own experience as a neurodivergent help Enzo bring his talents to the table?

Bryan has done a deft job of interleaving the present with the past. Subtle elements -- car models, entertainment devices, TV shows and period music are all worked into the story without being shoved into the reader's face. Character development is terrific with fully-fleshed personalities and histories for the new players in the story, and nice touches back to those we've met in the first two books, or even in the Midlife in Aura Cove series. Time-travel plots can be hard to hold together, but Bryan does a lovely job with that, as well.

Can't wait to see what happens in the series finale!

Time travel to find who you are!

I’m truly enjoying this series. Time travel has always been a fun mental escape. Searching for others, and finding one’s self is a marvelous interweaving of concepts. Growing through the eyes of others is also a wonderful layers. Redemption through acts of selflessness, and righting wrongs hits all the right buttons. Looking forward to the grand finale.
