I'm an independent author who lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife, three children, and delightfully curious cat, Jovie. The House That Held Her is my debut novel, and I am incredibly proud of it. After eight rewrites, four different endings, and many characters killed, saved, and killed again, I think The House That Held Her will have you turning pages faster than ever.

I'm always eager to connect with fellow book lovers. If you’d like to chat about this novel or swap reading recommendations, you can reach out via any of my official author platforms.

Short chilling stories to keep you awake at night

OMG, I can't remember the last time I got so many goosebumps page after page. ‘As told under the moon’ was one absolutely tasty frightening dish. Perfect for the spooky season. Going straight to my horror collection with a well deserved 5 stars rating.

It came as no surprise to me that many stories I loved were written by Ellis Hart. There's something about his writing and the topics he tackles that just crawls up under my skin and lives in there for a while.

I must admit, my favorite stories were:

- ‘Potato Head’
- ‘Wishing box’
- ‘One for Sorrow’
- ‘Dead Line’
- ‘La Dame Blanche’
- ‘Kindred’ (I’m going to be honest, this one left me craving for more, it was the absolute favorite; there’s something insanely terrifying about the level of control a machine can have over us, but also alluring in a twisted way)

Perhaps it was the amount of twists and the creepy, constant uneasy atmosphere that offered no merciful breathing breaks, perhaps some personal preferences there, but these stories gave me the chills in the most delicious way. And when some simple lines can literally touch my skin and make my hair stand on end, now that’s the real definition of a great horror story.

I read it in one go. Perhaps amongst the very few anthologies of horror stories that kept me invested in all of them. All stories are great, they're so well written, creepy, oozing an eerie atmosphere. We got ghosts, urban legends, stalkers, killers, vampires, AI technology, everything.

Many, many thanks to Ellis Hart, Dusk and Dagger Publishing, and NetGalley for the ARC. This is a voluntary review, reflecting solely my opinion.

You're never too old to stay up late reading scary stories under the covers. This was a refreshing collection of short stories by indie authors, led by author Ellis Hart. Honestly, I could read a whole book of just his short stories. My favorite was "Dead Air", I needed more! Some stories felt a bit too short to pack a punch, but it was fun to get a preview into the writing of other authors to see who to add to my future TBR.

I have always been a sucker for a horror anthology, so when I came across As Told Under the Moon, it found an IMMEDIATE spot on my TBR. This anthology does NOT disappoint, and if you're looking for more spooky little morsels to add to your own TBR, stop reading now and GO ADD THIS BOOK. Don't worry, I'll wait. ((Okay, is it added? Good! Let's continue!))

I love stumbling onto new voices in the horror space, and this group of authors deserves to be KNOWN. As much as I want to support new horror authors in the indie space, I don't always know the best ways to find them, making this collection such a gift. I know I've already made it clear that this book is for the horror lovers, and it is, but I also think it's great for those looking to get more into the horror space. This anthology is essentially the older sibling who lets you stay up past your bedtime and tells you dark stories that warp your every fear into something even more twisted; it's a patchwork quilt of terror that wraps around your legs when you're kicking awake from a nightmare afterwards.

I loved this 21-tale collection in its entirety, but two stories stood out to me as favorites: Dead Air by Ellis Hart and The Portrait by H.H. Mika. I encourage you to go into these stories blind, so I won't say anything more to avoid spoilers, but please understand that I will not be shutting up about these stories in particular for at least 3-5 business months. ((That aside, please check warnings at the beginning of the book if you need to be content conscious to look out for yourself.))

This book is set to release on 10/1/25 and you deserve to let it worm its wriggling, dark way into your October TBR, so don't forget to add it ASAP!

((While the viewpoints shared are my own, I want to thank NetGalley & Dusk and Dagger Publishing/Ellis Hart for this complimentary copy.))

🔥 As Told Under The Moon presented by Ellis Hart 🔥

If you’re looking for an anthology of creepy stories with some taking place around Halloween, you should definitely check out this book! These stories were so well done. Some of them genuinely gave me the creeps 👀

I cannot thank author @ellis_hart_author enough for sending me a #giftedcopy of this collection. The different chapter artwork at the beginning of each chapter really brought this collection to life!

This book is available for purchase and is also available on Kindle Unlimited! Be sure to check this one out! It’s definitely worth your time!

There was not one bad story in this collection. Every single one was brilliant and captivating, not to mention wonderfully written and edited.

I can't even pick a favourite because each one was so good! Hugely entertaining and some proper creepy and disturbing stories included. Horror, thriller and pure psychological trauma are included. Tread carefully! But highly recommended to fans of the genre.

This is such an easy 5 stars for me. Im forever a thriller fan. This is my first time reading shorter stories, and it might be a game changer for me. The unease i felt whilst reading this was impeccable. The way an author can make me feel in just a few pages?! Incredible. Some of the cliffhangers had me begging for more, and that just adds to the thrill. I honestly couldn't pick a favourite story from this book, each one is just *chef's kiss*.
I also love how this has introduced me to some brilliant authors (new to me), I can't wait to get my hands on a trophy copy!

After Ellis' live reading on his socials, of one of these short stories, I knew i would absolutely love it. I'm incredibly grateful to have been accepted for this ARC! Big thanks to netgalley (and Ellis!) for the opportunity to read and review

There's something about October nights that makes a book like As Told Under The Moon hit just right. Ellis Hart's anthology feels like a midnight campfire where every story carries a chill, ghosts that won't rest, folklore that bites back, and the kind of quiet horror that creeps up on you when the house goes still. These aren't loud, jump scare stories, they're soft eerie ones that crawl under your skin and stay there. If you love moody, poetic horror that feels both beautiful and unsettling, this collection is a perfect companion for a long haunted night.

There's a special kind of magic in a book that can scare you and move you at the same time, and As Told Under The Moon does exactly that. This isn't a collection built on gore and shock value. Instead, Ellis curated a hauntingly beautiful anthology of some of today's most talented in indie horror/thriller novels that thrives on quiet terror and emotional depth. Each story feels like it was plucked straight from a dream (or nightmare) where folklore meets grief, memory, and the strange things that live in the space between. What I love most is how varied the voices are. Some stories ache with loss and longing, others make your skin crawl with slow, creeping dread. But all of them share that same sense of stillness, like the hush of the world just before something unexplainable happens. You can tell this collection was created with genuine love for the genre, and respect for the art of subtle horror. It's dark, yes, but also deeply human, about what lingers after love, loss, and fear fade Into the night. Grab a blanket, a warm drink, and settle in because As Told Under The Moon absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR for spooky season!

Thank you to NetGalley, Ellis Hart, and Dusk and Dagger for this eARC! Publication date was October 1st, 2025.

I requested this book because i read and loved Ellis Hart's novel earlier this year, so i knew i should give this book a go.
Now, i am a wimp when it comes to horror. Loved it when i was younger but as i've gotten older i am just not as tough as i used to be, so i was aware that i was taking a huge leap out of my comfort zone with this book. I saw the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book and the vast number of them had me skipping that page lest it put me off taking the leap.

I read a few of the stories each day so that i spread the book out and i loved the variety of styles and themes in here. Because of the variety i never knew what direction each story would be taking which really created so much tension. There were monsters, AI technology, stalkers, killers and ghosts among other things. This book was intense, at some points i was so far outside my comfort zone i couldn't even see it anymore, but each story is great in its own right. So much tension, so much unease and so many points where you wanted to shout out to the characters to tell them to stop or to run or to just get the hell out of there!

This was 4.5 stars for me, if i was less squeamish then it would have been a full 5, so that's purely a personal thing and no reflection on the authors.

If I averaged out all the ratings properly, this would come out to a 3.75. But I’m rounding up for Goodreads purposes and because I thought this was a FANTASTIC collection of horror stories. This collection is perfect for all year round spooks but would elevate the scaries of spooky season. You got your classic, campfire-esque scary stories with their own unique spins; to modernized reality based horrors to make you second guess your own mentality; and of course, the campy, vampire/creature-features to amp up the fantastical horrors the mind conjures up in the dark of the late hours. I had such a great time reading this collection and highly recommend for anyone looking for some short spooks to end their nights with.
My favorites of the collections were:
• The Portrait by H.H. Mika (I knew I would love his story seeing as I loved his novel, Something in the Blood)
• Night Shift by Cailin Cecchini
• Kindred and The Fear by Ellis Hart
• Dead Line by Alessandra Benini
A special thank you to H.H. Mika for gifting me a copy of this collection! Appreciation all around for you!

A collection of twenty-one short stories of haunting horror - perfect for the spooky season! There's probably something for everyone here, but be warned that there is an extensive list of trigger warnings at the start. This is not for the faint-hearted.

Usually I find that short story collections vary widely in quality, but this one was really good with some very eerie stories indeed. All of the stories had merit, although one or two really grossed me out, but for me the standout stories were:

4) Dead Air by Ellis Hart (like a very twisted episode of 'Midnight Caller')

8) Dead Line by Alessandra Benini (an old style telephone brings misery to whoever owns it)

11) Kindred by Ellis Hart (The ultimate in online dating)

Very good overall & recommended for horror fans.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Dusk and Dagger Publishing, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

4.5✨

A hauntingly beautifully collection of stories to read in the dark, but maybe sleep with a light on if you’re prone to nightmares, like I am.

The authors’ voices in this collection shines through with a mixture of chills and heart, and pure imagination. I’ve found plenty of new indie authors to dote on.

This anthology really said “let’s try every flavor of horror” and then committed to the bit.

As Told Under the Moon is a mixed bag in the way most horror anthologies are, but in a surprisingly fun, slightly chaotic way. You get everything here. Psychological horror, folklore, ghost stories, unsettling slow-burns, and the occasional “what did I just read” moment. The quality definitely varies, but that’s part of the experience.

There are a handful of standouts that make the whole collection worth it. One For Sorrow by A.D. Jones is one of those stories where you think you know exactly where it’s going… and then it keeps going. I was fully in “okay I get it” mode and then suddenly it was “wait, WHAT?” all the way through the ending and honestly even after.

Dead Air by Ellis Hart could have easily been just another podcast horror story, but it actually does something interesting by blending that modern setup with classic ghost story elements. It feels familiar in a good way, not a tired one.

The Woman in White by Aurelie Duncanson is peak claustrophobic horror. It has that suffocating feeling of being slowly hunted while your world keeps shrinking around you. Uncomfortable in the way horror should be.

Then there’s Night Shift by Caitlin Cecchini, which leans into this nostalgic, almost cozy setup with video rentals… and then absolutely pulls the rug out from under you. The less you know going in, the better.

Some stories hit on a more emotional level. Kindred balances touching, sad, and creepy in a way that actually lingers, and Her Skin by Amy Tackett is just straight-up haunting in that quiet, unsettling way.

A few left me wanting more in a good way. The World’s Greatest Dad by Ellis Hart feels like it opens a door and then just… walks away. I need to know what happens next because that situation is not resolved in my brain. At all.

Others stand out for pure tension or weirdness. The Portrait by H.H. Mika is very much an edge-of-your-seat kind of read, while Cold as Ice by Alex Franklyn is just… strangely compelling. Weird, but in a way that works.

Overall, this is a strong anthology that doesn’t always land every story but absolutely delivers enough memorable ones to make up for it. If you like your horror varied, a little unpredictable, and occasionally unhinged, this is a solid pick.

Y’all listen up! I got a review to share.

So I snagged this bad boy off of NetGalley because short stories are my jam. I went in and looked at the TOC and didn’t see any names I recognized so I went in a little apprehensive (I don’t like new things). When I tell you these stories shook me to my very core I am not saying it lightly.

These were some of the best short stories I’ve read in years! Ellis Hart’s stories were especially noteworthy in this collection. I really hope these authors keep pushing out ideas for the world over to enjoy.

As in my typical fashion I won’t go into detail over ever single story but I will talk about a few that got my attention.

The Wishing Box: I really enjoyed the character and the way the story developed

Dead Air: had me rooted to my screen the entire time. Amazing premise and execution

Dead Line: the suspense!!!!!

Night Shift: this made the 90’s kid in me so happy and giddy

La Dame Blanche: felt like an old campfire tale on steroids.

Here is a list of contributors in case you want to check them out.

Alessandra Benini, Shawn Brooks, Cailin Cecchini, Aurelie Duncanson, Alex Franklyn, Julia Jackson, A.D. Jones, Victoria M. Sorenson, Amy Tackett, David Washburn, SJ King, H.H. Mika, and Ellis Hart (editor and contributor).

The book was published back in October of this year so if you’re looking for an outstanding read, this is the one.

As Told Under the Moon feels like someone binge-watched Tales from the Crypt, got way too inspired, and said, “You know what the world needs? More reasons to never sleep peacefully again.” And honestly, I’m not mad about it.

This little collection serves up bite-sized horror like it’s running a spooky tapas bar. Most of the stories swoop in, spook you just enough to make you rethink checking the basement, and then vanish before your attention span has time to wander. A couple of them… well, let’s just say I had to crawl through them like I was wading through haunted molasses. But the good ones? Yeah, they smack hard.

The vibe stays nicely eerie, the twists actually twist, and the writing doesn’t collapse into nonsense like so many horror shorts love to do. Highlights for me were The White Lady (basically a cursed Bloody Mary with bonus creep factor) and Hide and Seek, a compact little terror nugget that proves short stories can still be rude to your nervous system.

If you want fast, creepy reads that won’t eat your entire weekend but will make you suspicious of your own hallway, this book delivers. Four stars, because being mildly traumatized in snackable chapters is apparently my thing now.

As Told Under the Moon is a collection of horror stories written by various indie authors, and omg I absolutely devoured this whole book!

Growing up, I always loved Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and this was kind of like a more scary and dark adult version of that. I read these stories on my kindle at night and they definitely spooked me and had me looking over my shoulder.

Ellis Hart is one of the authors who I have had the pleasure of reading his debut novel, The House That Held Her, and I just knew I would love his short stories in this one. He is a fantastic writer and his spooky stories will have you on the edge of your seat.

I loved being introduced to so many new indie authors as well throughout this collection! Each story had its own unique voice, and I can’t wait to check out more of their work in the future.

I can’t even choose a favorite story, they were all amazing and so creepy. If you’re looking for something chilling to curl up with this spooky season, this collection is the perfect pick. 🎃

This is my favorite kind of book. One that you keep by your bed and read every night before you fall asleep. One that sends you off into dreamland with thoughts of monsters, demons, and the unknown dancing in your head. At any point in time, I have at least one of these books close at hand, so I have read MANY of them.

This book is a little different. Unlike most of the collections I have read, there was not a story in this book that I did not enjoy. Of course, there were some that I liked more/less than others, but all in all, I liked all of these stories. However, since it is a book of short stories, I cannot give this a five-star rating. I will say that this is the highest I have ever rated a collection of short stories.

Thanks to the author and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I can say that as I went to bed at night, my feet never strayed out from under the covers. My favorite kind of nights.

I’m not usually a fan of short story collections, but As Told the Moon completely won me over. This haunting anthology gathers new and emerging authors new to me along with short, creepy and chilling stories by Ellis himself.

My personal favourites? ‘Kindred’ with Kat longing for love and the stories eerie tenderness with my most favourite line in the book……’You want me to fall in love with a Tamagotchi?’ 🤣😂. ‘Dead Air’ a chilling slow-burn that had me on edge; and ‘Hide and Seek’ - which feels like it might be a teaser for something bigger 👀 If that’s a glimpse of a new novel, I’m very intrigued. I also enjoyed ‘One for Sorrow’ by A.D.Jones which is the perfect Halloweens Night read.

Each story carries that perfect October atmosphere: campfire smoke, ghostly echoes, and the thrill of the unknown.

🔥🌲 Even if, like me, you don’t usually reach for short story collections, this one is absolutely worth it. Perfect for a moody autumn night.

This was a solid little collection of short stories, with a few standouts. The connective tissue between stories wasn’t as strong as I would have liked, which made for a bit of a muddled reading experience, and the prose was not consistently polished, but I generally had a good time.

These were my 5/5 standouts:
The World’s Greatest Dad - appealed to me in every way.
The Portrait - body horror, psychological horror, a pathetic man. What more could one ask for?

Honorable mention:
Kindred - I was not a fan of the MC, but it was a nice twist on what I thought we were doing. Psychosis, gaslighting, a concept that I thought could have been taken further, but left me with something to chew on.

All opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in return for my honest review.

I loved dipping in and out of these short stories. Perfect for when you need a spooky fix!

This book was published just in time for Halloween season and I’m so grateful for that.

I really enjoyed reading new authors and having a little snippet of their writing style. I’ve now found some great new authors I want to read.

I loved getting my Ellis Hart fix in a number of the stories and loved that he revisited Mount Dora.
Some of these stories were really quite scary, especially when you’re reading alone in the dark.
You know a book is going to be good when it has FOUR pages of trigger warnings!

“Knock, knock, knock - the white lady calls,
Her shadow creeps along the walls.
Beware if you don’t open the door,
She’ll leave her mark forevermore.” - Aurelie Duncanson - Le Dame Blanche

What a delightfully dark and fun collection this was.

As Told Under the Moon is a wonderful anthology that reminded me of the old Point Horror and Goosebumps series to a certain extent. The collection features a putrid parade of vampires, cursed objects, ghastly ghosts, and crazed killers.

While short story collections are always hit and miss, even the slightly weaker entries were solid and at no point was I not entertained. In all honesty, the only disappointment I had was finishing it.

Now if Ellis Hart (ahem) could get the band back together for a second outing, that would be great.

I had a lovely time reading this book, so I did.

As Told Under the Moon by Ellis Hart is a horror anthology featuring a collection of unsettling tales filled with ghosts, eerie creatures, and cursed objects. While not every story leaves a lasting impression, the majority are engaging enough to satisfy fans of short-form horror. Hart creates atmospheric settings and intriguing concepts, though several stories feel as if they end too quickly, leaving the reader wanting deeper exploration and stronger conclusions. A few narratives have the potential to be expanded into full-length novels with richer detail and development. Overall, it’s an enjoyable seasonal read, especially for those who appreciate indie horror and Halloween-themed storytelling. I would give the book 4 stars.

Anthologies are always tricky little beasts. Some stories hit and some politely wander off. But this one mostly hits hard. Honestly, it's a collection of bangers.

As Told Under the Moon is packed with stories that range from eerie to straight up brilliant. It has a bit of everything. We have haunted phones, vampire hunting and face peeling serial killers. I am all about supporting indie authors and so glad that this book introduced me to a bunch that easily get me to buy a full length novel without a second thought.

Standout favourites - Dead Air, Dead Line, The Portrait (!!!) and Kindred.

Incredible collection of creepy short stories written by multiple authors just in time for spooky season. The stories range from mild Halloween thrillers to gory horror stories. This book was well put-together--there wasn't one story that I didn't enjoy. Some had me on the edge of my seat, some gave me anxiety, and some had me afraid to turn the page.

My favorites: The Wishing Box, Dead Line, and Kindred.
Goriest: The Portrait
One That Stuck With Me: Kindred (this one is about AI which really gets inside your brain and makes you think)

This horror anthology holds the perfect terrifying tales to make sure you tuck your toes in under your blanky (and there is even a blanky story too!!!!) I immediately went to follow all the seperate authors on Instagrm after finishing this book, the tales are that good that I wanted so, so, so much more from them! I know I am late to the party since this book released on October 1, 2025, but trust me, it'll hold solid any time you want to get your fear bubbled to the surface and jump-start your heart to pound against your ribcage. Solid gold stars.Thank-you, Ellis Hart Books, for this complimentary copy. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

This anthology of short, indie horror stories is dark, unsettling, and exactly my kind of read! Most of the 21 stories are really good and I was eager to see what level of horror each new story would bring. I'd happily add a physical copy to my shelf and also look for other stories from the authors of my favorites.

My top picks:
Potato Head Shawn Brooks
The Wishing Box Ellis Hart
Hide and Seek Ellis Hart
Dead Line Alessandra Benini
Night Shift Cailin Cecchini
It's Tradition Julia Jackson
The Portrait H.H. Mika
