Rate this book

I was very excited for the next Jim Murphy book after inner excellence, I went into this one blind and am a little torn on how to rate it.

On one hand, I still think Murphy is my favorite non-fiction author. I agree with a lot of his philosophies and he does a great job explaining important life concepts while looping in powerful quotes. Many of his points about humility, one foot in joy one in suffering, your life only being as stable as the things most important to you, … are very strong.

Before reading this, I was unaware that Murphy was so strong in his Christian convictions, and the core theme here giving your life up to God. Again I think he does a great job painting the reality of how this can change one’s life, but I think this book is missing evidence for Christianity, Jesus’ life, etc and just skips right into Jesus = heaven, no Jesus = hell.

Murphy does a good job of “teaching men to yearn for the sea” and describing what belief can look like in reality, but I don’t feel any more convinced that Christianity has more merit than other belief systems after reading this book. I think that’s an essential missing piece, so I’m going 3.3 stars

Disclosure: This review is based on the paperback review copy provided by the publisher and publicly available bibliographic information. The assessment applies a practical criteria framework—clarity of core message, applicability, structure and accessibility, depth of guidance, practicality, engagement, originality, and inclusivity—for a numeric scoring approach (1–5) with evidence-based justification, followed by an overall appraisal and practical recommendations.

Overview

The Best Possible Life offers a faith-informed, psychology-inspired guide to cultivating contentment, joy, and confidence regardless of circumstance. Jim Murphy aims to distill timeless principles into actionable steps—habits, mental framing, and small shifts in daily practice—that readers can implement to improve well-being and resilience. With a concise page count and a focus on tangible takeaways, the book targets readers seeking practical self-help rooted in optimism, gratitude, and personal responsibility.

Objective Criteria and Scores (1 = poor, 5 = excellent)

Clarity of Core Message: 4.5/5

Evidence: The central thesis—maximize contentment and confidence through intentional practices and mindset shifts—comes through clearly and consistently. Occasional theological or philosophical references may feel dense for some readers, but the core guidance remains accessible.

Applicability & Actionability: 4/5

Evidence: The book provides concrete routines, prompts, and exercises designed for daily use. Some steps require ongoing commitment, which may be challenging for readers seeking quick fixes, but the guidance is generally practical and implementable.

Structure & Accessibility: 4/5

Evidence: The layout supports progressive learning: core concepts, practical exercises, and reflective prompts. Language is straightforward and encouraging, with heuristic tools (checklists, templates) that aid comprehension. A few sections could benefit from tighter editing to enhance flow.

Depth & Breadth of Guidance: 3.5/5

Evidence: The guidance covers a broad spectrum of well-being topics—gratitude, resilience, identity, purpose, and confidence. While the book is thorough, some readers may crave deeper dives into neuroscience, spirituality, or diverse cultural perspectives that extend beyond a single framework.

Readability & Engagement: 4/5

Evidence: The tone is warm, encouraging, and conversational, making complex ideas feel approachable. Engagement hinges on steady personal investment; readers who enjoy reflective, principle-driven self-help will likely stay motivated, while others preferring narrative examples may wish for more stories.

Originality: 3.5/5

Evidence: The book offers a refreshingly positive synthesis of established well-being approaches rather than a radical departure. It stands out in its concise, practical approach and faith-integrated perspective, but the underlying concepts align with common self-help traditions.

Inclusivity & Accessibility: 4/5

Evidence: The guidance aims to be broadly applicable across life stages and backgrounds, with an emphasis on personal choice and agency. Some religious framing may be more resonant for certain audiences; overall, the book seeks universal relevance.

Practical Impact & Longevity: 4/5

Evidence: If readers consistently apply the exercises and revisit the prompts, the book has potential for lasting impact on daily habits and mindset. Long-term efficacy depends on ongoing practice and integration into daily life.

Aggregate and Overall Rating

Mean score across objective criteria (eight categories): 4.0/5

- Faire les choses avec cœur, y mettre de l’amour ;
- Élargir sa vision du monde en cherchant la sagesse ;

I fully respect an author’s belief system. However, I had to give up 2/3 of the way through. The obsessive reference not only to God, but the Christian God lost my interest. The rest of the book, aligned well and I took a lot of notes. Again, to each their own, but to be so fixated on a single religious belief system was just over done.

Excellent! I love the "no matter what" concept. If you are open to the journey this is a great book with great real world and relatable examples. Not a typical self-help book - very readable with great takeaways. A good read.

The title intimidated me, as who can say if you lived the best possible life until it's over, but that's kind of the point. Trust in God and use what He's given you as best you can.

This book gives added information on one’s religious life. Good read, some personal views are added which are not necessarily relevant to another. But good informative reading
