A small town, opposite side of the tracks, secret identity romance from NY Times Best Selling Author Samantha Chase
Maisie Quinn is on the run. Sort of.
Desperate to escape her overbearing family and an arranged marriage to the absolute worst man, Maisie only has one month to prove to everyone she can make it on her own. When she finds out the Lakeview Harbor Resort is looking for an interior designer, she jumps at the chance. Not only has interior design always been her dream, but it’ll give her the freedom she desperately wants. She just can’t let on just how desperate she is…or who her family is. And it would all be fine if not for a rogue turtle and a storm completely derailing her plans—what’s a little breaking and entering to seek shelter when it already feels like your life is falling apart?
Axel Hayes is living his best life. Finally.
After years spent forced to be on his own, Axel is finally a part of something big and has found purpose helping his best friends bring the Lakeview Harbor Resort back to life. He might not have the same kind of money as his friends, but he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty and do a little manual labor. When he’s tasked with hiring an interior designer, he’s determined not to let anyone down. But when the last applicant shows up late and he catches her trying to break into the resort, he’s torn. Her designs are perfect, but can he trust someone who was trying to break and enter?
When the storm leaves Maisie and Axel stranded at the resort, falling into bed together feels like the best way to pass the time—who doesn’t love a weekend fling? But when the storm clears and Axel discovers who Maisie really is, he’ll have to decide what matters more—that she lied or that she could be his chance at the future he never thought he could have.
Samantha Chase is a New York Times and USA Today bestseller of contemporary romance that’s hotter than sweet, sweeter than hot. She released her debut novel in 2011 and currently has more than seventy titles under her belt – including THE CHRISTMAS COTTAGE which was a Hallmark Christmas movie in 2017! She’s a Disney enthusiast who still happily listens to 80’s rock. When she’s not working on a new story, she spends her time reading romances, playing way too many games of Solitaire on Facebook, wearing a tiara while playing with her sassy pug Maylene…oh, and spending time with her husband of 30 years and their two sons in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
resort fling is a good story but it just didn’t resonate with me like i hoped it would. i didn’t feel connected to any of characters and it felt like the only thing connecting maisie and axel was their loneliness and low self worth.
axel seemed immature and his childhood trauma came out in these weird mean outbursts. he gets some points for how well he took care of maisie but he def needs more therapy.
rebecca gibel was a great narrator for the audiobook. thank you netgalley for the arc!
Maisie and Axel were cute! They had an instant connection as soon as they met they made me melt a little. ☺️
For me, I found the storyline to be a little basic and there was nothing really exciting that kept me engaged. It was also a closed-door romance and the spice is literally the best part of a book! 🤣 (That’s a me problem though)
#Resort Fling by Samantha Chase (2025) Lakeview Harbor #2 8h 11m narrated by Rebecca Gibel, 295 pages

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½🖌💅🏻🏡🗽
My thoughts: ⏯️ - When I tried to add this book to my book apps I noticed it was book 2 in a series so naturally I'm going to stop and go read the rest of the series before I get to this one. ▶️ - I am so glad I decided to read the first 2 books of the series before starting this one. The novella is not a prequel but a setup for the series and book one continues with the novella leaves off and the characters multiply with each book. So if I had started this book without reading the 2 previous books I would have been starting in the middle of the story with little background information. I'm so grateful it was listed as book 2 in a series. 📱54% 3h 46m left [Chapter] 9 - It seems the original couple, who had the investment idea, Jayce and Kelsey, have been written out of the partnership even though they were a huge part of Books 0.5 and 1. Jayce's occupation has been given to Connor. I don’t like it when there are continuity issues. Something about this story reminds me of Lady and the Tramp. 📱92% 41m left [Chapter] 14 - I hate to stop here as the story has reached the climax, but I need to get ready for the day.
This story was good but there were some issues for me. Primarily continuity issues which is a huge pet peeve of mine. Jayce and Kelsey were eliminated from the list of investors, so they went from 7 investors down to 5, all guys. This was unnecessary and disappointing for me but then Jayce and Kelsey were mentioned in the epilogue which contradicted the new background story, and seemed like an afterthought, like maybe an alpha reader complained about it and they found the laziest way to try to fix it. Then there was the character that was introduced as someone's fiancée and then later was not engaged, these little things may not matter to some readers but they are huge for an emphatic immersive reader like myself. It takes everything I have not to become hyper-focused on the little details that are incorrect for this world. My other issue with this story was that there was a lot of sex, It was surprising because 90% of it was closed door but I was like, Is there more to the story than this? I would say for the first half of the story it seemed like they spent more time hooking up than moving the plot along and it started to get old. It almost got 3 stars because of that. Essentially they were just kissing, getting naked, and waking up tangled in different places for several chapters. It became very repetitive and I didn't see much designing going on which I was looking forward to. I have to say the second half of the book saved this story for me. It seems as if Connor is going to be next and I am looking forward to it his character sounds great but I do feel like he kind of replaced Jayce. This is my second and a ⅕ series by Samantha Chase and she can definitely create a world you want to visit. I loved Silver Bell Falls, I still need to get back to Enchanted Bridal, and I'm going to see Lakeview Harbor to the end. Thank you to NetGalley for this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Recommend to others: Yes! Even with the continuity issues this is a pretty good series.
✨ Review ✨ *** #Resort Fling was so good!! I loved Axel and Maisie. Their relationship was so good! Axel was a sweetheart and so kind. I loved his personality and his story. Maisie was perfect for him. The writing was so good and easy to read. I enjoyed seeing all the characters and cannot wait for the next book! *** Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Romance: 🩷🩷🩷 Spice: .5 ***
I do love a found family, and instalove story. Short, cute, and fun. Great for when you need a palette cleanser from some heavier reads. This hits on some heavier topics like foster care, drug addiction, and arranged marriages, I think it is handled well and important to the story, not just thrown in for the drama. I will keep this series in mind for when I need something easy to get through.
Overall, this is a cute romance. It's a bit too 'insta-love' for my taste, and ya girl doesn't always love closed door LOL I think this is like a 3.25 - 3.5 ish stars for me, rounding up for Axel being so protective of our girl Maisie, even when he barely knew her.
I thought the narrator was great and the production of the audiobook was pleasant to listen to. I don't have any big issues with this other than the tropes aren't exactly my favorite. The romance between the two MC seemed like it grew from a genuine place of understanding between them. I did enjoy each of their character growth throughout the story.
If I'm being nitpicky 3rd person POV isn't it. 🙅🏻♀️
Samantha Chase has done it again! I absolutely loved #Resort Fling, the second book in her Lakeview Harbor series! #Resort Fling is an incredible love story, which filled me with a rollercoaster of emotions, I was hooked from the first few pages, and it was impossible to put it down. I loved every moment on every page. Samantha Chase continues to deliver the incredibly written love stories that I LOVE to read and is a must-read author for me. I love opposites attract love story, the Harbortown setting, and the amazing characters, they feel like family! Samantha Chase does not disappoint her readers with all the feels in #Resort Fling and has once again delivered an amazing story filled with everything that I have come to love about and expect from her books. Who does not love hot sexy men, strong, passionate females, big loving families, and caring friends, who always support each other? #Resort Fling is a love story between Maisie Quinn, interior designer and owner of MAQ Interiors and Axel Hayes, managing renovations of Lakeview Harbor Resort. Maisie comes from a wealthy family and her father has issued her an ultimatum, she has two months to prove that she can have a successful career in interior design, otherwise it is an arranged marriage to Bryce Chadsworth for her. Her parents have taken away her credit cards, access to her accounts and gave her an old truck. Maisie chooses to use Quinn as last name instead of her actual last name of Quinnland. On the way to her interview at the resort, Maisie stops to save a turtle. Her truck will not start after the rescue. She ends up being late for her interview and arrives at the resort during a storm. Initially, Axel thinks that she is trying to break into the lodge and realizes that she was the last appointment for the decorator position for the resort. Axel along with a group of his childhood friends are renovating the Lakeview Harbor resort. Axel does not have the capital to invest, instead he is managing and working on the renovations of the lodge and the cabins. Axel is impressed with the research that Maisie has put into her proposal. With the strength of the storm, they decide to hang out at the lodge during the storm. Things quickly heat up as Maisie and Axel spend time at the lodge. As Maisie and Axel spend time together with Maisie decorating the lodge, things slowly change between them. With the help of Axel’s friends, Maisie is able to get more contracts for her design company. Conversation between Maisie and Axel flow easily. I love the group chat between Axel and his friends. I love the chemistry between them. I love the heart-to-heart conversations that take place in #Resort Fling, especially when Axel shares the secrets of his childhood and growing up in the foster care system. Maisie does not share her identity with Axel. An unexpected plot twist puts their relationship in jeopardy, especially since Axel has trust and abandonment issues from his childhood. I love the strength that Maisie shows to resolve the plot twist and have the future that she wants. One of my favorite parts is how Axel takes Maisie to the same glamping resort that Harlow and Walker went to. I was so happy that Axel and Maisie finally admitted their true feelings for one another, and the changes that they make to have a life together instead of just a fling. My favorite part is the epilogue is the perfect ending of their love story and all the surprises that are revealed. I love how Axel friends make him the manager of the resort. I love all the changes that Axel and Maisie make in their lives to have a future with one another. #Resort Fling was an amazing love story; I am so glad that Axel and Maisie got the happily ever after. I loved all the plot twists and surprises that filled the pages of this love story. I love how Samantha Chase always manages to create the "perfect" heroine, who is a strong, sassy woman on her own, to balance out the sexy, swoon worthy man. Samantha Chase continues to deliver all that and so much more. I am not sure how she does it, but Samantha Chase has once again given her readers another remarkable book. #Resort Fling is filled with all the heartbreaking and heartwarming moments, plot twists, and surprises that I have come to love and expect in a Samantha Chase love story, I especially loved the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. I love that she writes her stories from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting inside their minds and knowing their thoughts and how they really feel. I love catching up with all the characters in this series. It felt like a family reunion, I enjoy all the interactions among their friends, it feels like family love and makes me laugh at their teasing. I love the descriptions of the Harbortown and the Lakeview Harbor resort in #Resort Fling. Who does not love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? I cannot wait to read the other books in the series. Highly recommend this beautifully written love story. Received an advanced copy from the author.
This is insta-love, so if that’s not your thing, this might not be the book for you. But personally? I love love in all its forms, whether it’s instant sparks or a slow burn, so this one absolutely worked for me.
The story kicks off in a slightly chaotic but fun way, with Axel literally thinking Maisie is a burglar, and somehow that misunderstanding becomes the foundation for something surprisingly emotional. What starts as a storm-stranded weekend fling quickly turns into a deeper connection filled with vulnerability, growth, and real feelings on both sides.
Axel is such a sweet, layered character. You can clearly see his insecurities, feel his self-doubt, and understand why he struggles with feeling “good enough,” especially when surrounded by people with more money and privilege. His quiet strength and willingness to show up for others made him incredibly easy to root for.
Maisie, on the other hand, completely broke my heart in the best way. From the very beginning, you can feel her desperation, fear, and need for independence dripping off the page. She’s running from an overbearing family and an arranged marriage, trying to prove she can stand on her own, and that emotional weight is always present. Her journey toward reclaiming her voice and her worth was genuinely satisfying to watch unfold.
There are heavy topics woven into this story, including feelings of not being good enough, adoption, sexual assault, and abuse, so definitely go in with that awareness. That said, they’re handled with care and add emotional depth rather than feeling gratuitous.
The pacing and timeline worked really well for me. Nothing felt rushed, even with the insta-love setup, and the emotional progression felt earned. The setting, the resort renovation, and the forced proximity from the storm all blended perfectly to create an intimate, cozy-romance vibe with real substance underneath.
I listened to this on audiobook, and while I do think there was a missed opportunity for a true dual POV, Rebecca Gibel absolutely nailed this narration. Her emotional range, her ability to differentiate voices, and the way she carried both Axel’s pain and Maisie’s vulnerability made the story even more impactful. I already love Rebecca Gibel on my worst reading days, but she truly elevated this book.
Overall, this was a heartfelt, emotional romance with strong character growth, tender moments, and just enough angst to keep things interesting. If you enjoy weekend flings that turn into something real, found family vibes, and emotionally driven romance, this one is worth the listen or read. 💕📚

#RESORT FLING is the second instalment in Samantha Chase’s contemporary, adult LAKEVIEW HARBOR romance series focusing on a tight know group of friends and investors: Axel, Connor Winslowe, Walker Bradshaw and Harlow, Milo and Slater. This is construction worker Axel Hayes, and twenty-seven year old designer Maisie Quinnland’s story line. #RESORT FLING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.
SOME BACKGROUND: Walker Bradshaw’s family owner LAKEVIEW HARBOR RESORT has sat in disrepair for years. Along with his friends Axel, Connor, Milo, Slater, Walker has reinvested in his grandparents Lakeview Harbor Resort, in the hopes of reestablishing to its’ former glory. These are their stories.
Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Maisie and Axel) #RESORT FLING focuses on Maisie Quinn’s arrival at Lakeview Harbor Resort in Harbortown, where she is to be interviewed for a position as the interior designer but a missed appointment, a storm, and the rescue of a turtle find Maise struggling to prove she is worthy of the job. From the outset Axel Hayes is immediately attracted to the woman who is keeping secrets but several days and nights spent together ends with misunderstanding, and the revelations that Maise’s secrets send Axel into a downward spiral.
The world building follows several pathways including the building romance and relationship, Maise’s plans for the Lakeview Harbor Resort, and the dysfunctional family dynamics that found our heroine on the run.
The relationship between Maise and Axel begins acrimoniously due in part to a myriad of misunderstandings and misconceptions but Maise is keeping a secret, that if discovered, may threaten any chance with our story line hero. There are no $ex scenes, everything is implied.
Once again, we are reintroduced to several investors including Connor and Harlow, Milo, Walker and Slater using face to face and online group texts, as well as the introduction of Maise’s parents Dominique and Alexander Quinnland, and Bryce Chadsworth.
#RESORT FLING is a story of secrets and misunderstanding, family and relationships, forgiveness and love. The character driven premise is thought provoking and entertaining; the romance is passionate; the characters are determined and charismatic.
Sizzling Escape: Fun, Flirty Romance with Unforgettable Characters and Heartfelt Friendships!
What a delightful escape "Resort Fling" turned out to be! Samantha Chase has done it again with her signature style, fun, flirty, and just the right amount of spice to keep things sizzling. From the very first page, I was hooked on the vibrant characters who felt so real and relatable; their chemistry jumped off the page and had me rooting for them every step of the way. The storyline was perfectly paced, blending heartwarming moments with unexpected twists that kept me turning pages late into the night. Ms. Chase's writing is as smooth and engaging as ever, making this a must-read for anyone who loves a feel-good romance with a tropical vibe. ... and while Resort Fling is book #2 in the Lakeview Harbor series, this can be read as a standalone (but you're going to want to download Resort Love!)
I especially loved the main characters: Maisie Quinn, a 27-year-old interior designer and heiress who's fiercely independent, resourceful, and determined to escape her overbearing family and an unwanted arranged marriage by proving she can succeed on her own. Then there's Axel Hayes, the strong, reliable construction worker and handyman with a no-nonsense demeanor and a hidden soft side. He's great with his hands and even better at building emotional connections, having found new purpose after years of isolation.
Adding to the charm is the "friends" focus surrounding the resort owners, a tight-knit group of buddies and investors (including Axel, Connor, Walker, Harlow, Milo, and Slater) who band together to restore the rundown Lakeview Harbor Resort back to its former glory. This isn't just a renovation project; it's a heartfelt story of camaraderie, second chances, and community integration, as they pour their energy into the revival and gradually become woven into the fabric of the town through shared challenges and bonds with the locals. It adds such warmth and depth, making the backdrop feel alive and integral to the romance.
If you're a fan of Ms. Chase's previous books, this one will not disappoint. It's pure joy in book form! Highly recommend, 5 stars all the way! I received an ARC from the author and I'm leaving this review to help others find their way to this fabulous book.
What a way to start the second book in this series. Axel returns from the store thinking someone is breaking into the resort lodge only to find out it’s Maisie who was their third interior design interview who never showed. I loved how Maisie told Axel about why she was late and the turtle and when the weather really turned bad and she got stuck at the resort and was nervous about staying overnight, Axel zoomed one of his friends to vouch for him. Who knew that their time together would be a possibly connection between them but when they officially hire her, she takes a step back plus she’s dealing with some pretty serious issues in her personal life. I have to admit while I was reading this, I kept having an inkling that she and one of the other guys might know each other and a few chapters later, my gut feeling was confirmed. I really felt for Maise when she finally came clean to this person since he was once in a similar situation and he stepped right up and offered to help her get rid of the horrible person her parents wanted her to marry in an arrangement which would benefit their families. I never expected that person would show up at the resort and Axel found out who Maisie actually is and unfortunately took off. One of my favorite parts of this book is when Axel left to get some space and his foster mom Joanne calls him to check in and can hear something in his voice and he tells her everything and I loved how she went back to mom mode to be there for him. LOVED that part. My next favorite part was when Maisie, with Milo’s help, had pretty damning information on her own parents and decided to confront them once and for all. Axel went with her and the scene with her and her parents and her owning the situation, major high five to our wonderful Maisie. It was also telling when her mom pretty much demanded that she’s done with her and her father of all people actually stood up and defended Maisie, in his own way. When they finally got back to the lodge after their time away, there were so many announcements to be made and one of the best involved both Axel and Maisie. I’m really invested in this series and can’t wait for Connor’s book and hope he ends up with everything he’s always wanted. Great story!
If you’re looking for a getaway that feels like a warm hug wrapped in a rainy-day aesthetic, Lakeview Harbor is quickly becoming the ultimate destination. Samantha Chase has a way of creating a vibrant community that makes you want to pack your bags and move in immediately, and Axel and Maisie’s story is a standout addition to the series.
I already had a soft spot for Axel from the previous book, but seeing him take center stage was a game-changer. He’s the quintessential "diamond in the rough"—loyal, honest, and hardworking—yet he’s his own harshest critic. Because of his background in foster care, he carries this weight of feeling like he isn't "enough" for the resort or the girl, even though everyone else can see he’s the backbone of the group.
Then enters Maisie Quinn, and honestly, their "meet cute" might be one of my favorites ever. Picture this: a rogue turtle, a missed interview, and a dash of breaking and entering during a massive storm. Maisie is an heiress on the run from a forced marriage and an overbearing family, trying to prove she can make it as an interior designer without her last name doing the heavy lifting. While she’s incredibly down-to-earth, it was a bit heart-tugging to see her doubt herself just as much as Axel does.
The chemistry between them is explosive—I truly don’t know what was more intense, the literal hurricane outside or the tension building inside the resort. Being stranded together forces their guards down, turning a "weekend fling" into a deep, soul-baring connection. It’s a classic "opposite sides of the tracks" romance with a secret-identity twist that keeps the stakes high.
Watching these two navigate their past hurts while helping their friends restore the resort is incredibly satisfying. Samantha Chase perfectly balances the angst of secret-keeping with the sweetness of a new beginning. By the time the storm clears, you’re left completely enamored with Windy Harbor and the beautiful future Axel and Maisie have built. If you love a story about finding where you belong, this one is a home run.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Maisie is trying her best to make a name for herself. By herself. With absolutely no help from her family, or their name. Additionally she feels that she HAS to do this, as her parents (who are very wealthy) want her to marry a man that she has NO INTEREST in marrying). He’s mean. He’s a bully. He has a bad rep. And she’s pretty sure he’s done some horrible things to many women before her…. So, she sets off on a mission to get a job. A big job. And quickly. So she can prove to herself and her family that she is GOOD ENOUGH!
Axel is a young, handsome guy who’s been through hell and back. His Mom gave him up when he was just a boy. And he’s been through numerous foster homes through the years. Luckily his last one was terrific. And so were his foster parents. He actually still keeps in touch with them. He’s now working with a couple of friends who he’s been friends with since they were just kids. They are building a resort on a lake, and are looking for an interior designer to help them out. Guess who is there to apply for the job? Maisie!
But, she gets caught in a storm on the way there. And, she had to rescue a turtle… so she was late…
Mind you, this is all in the first few minutes of the book! 😮. Both MC’s have stuff to hide, and it seems that neither of them want to come clean… plus, there are family members, and friends, and so much more!
There’s a bit of heartache. There are some shady characters. And, there are some really good friends!
4 1/2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 for me, happily rounded up to 5!

Samantha brought the big ones with this one! I loved Maisie and Axel, two souls who have dealt with hurt from the people who were supposed to love them unconditionally. 5 hot resort stars for this one! It's a must read! Maisie is trying to prove that she doesn't need her family, who cut her loose because she doesn't want to marry the man they chose for her! Yes you read that right! So they sent her off in a beat up pickup truck to find her way with out them. She wants to be an interior designer, and when she sees the ad for the resort, she does research and knows this is the perfect place to show her worth! Unfortunately on her way there, she encounters her truck breaking down, and is way late for the interview, only to find no one there. Just her luck, its pouring rain, so she's trying to break in, when she hears someone coming up behind her and she's toppled to the floor, with a gorgeous man on top of her! When she finds out he's an owner, and he agrees to hear her pitch, she has to prove that she is the one for this job, she needs this job! Axel had a rough life in and out of foster care till he aged out. But one of the families that he lived with always took him to this resort, where he met his best friends. Now there all here rebuilding it and when the last interview doesn't show, the guys all take off except for Axel. After he runs to the store he finds someone on the porch trying to break in, and when he tackles the person, he sees it's a woman, a beautiful one at that! He's instantly attracted to her, but he agrees to let her stay due to the incoming storm, and he will also listen to her pitch. He's floored that she's captured everything they wanted when designing the inn, she's the perfect choice! Now to try not to sleep with her, well that's a different story! These two have an instant connection, but their pasts get in the way. Can they get past the hurt, and learn to trust, and experience real love for the first times in their lives? Grab this asap, if you haven't read the first, start now, I love this series so much!
YES! I love this resort and all the inhabitants and getting to know them. This time we get to know Axel who grew up without all the advantages of the other guys on this team. He was a foster kid but the friendship made as kids was strong and when these guys came together as adults to buy the resort and bring it back to life, even though Axel didn't have the funds to put in as the others did, he has the muscle and expertise as a contractor to bring the resort back to life. As the others take off for time away he is tasked to wait for the decorator who is late for her interview. With a storm coming, he gives up on her and heads into town. When he comes back in a rainstorm he finds a beat-up truck, the same one he noticed on the way into town, at lodge and when he runs through the rain to the door he ends up tackling a woman to the porch. Maisie is not all as she appears. She is all curves and sass but she really wants this job. She stopped to move a turtle out of the road and her truck wouldn't start up again and so she was late getting to the resort for her interview. Now in the midst of a thunderstorm that is taking down trees and too dangerous to try to drive back to town in, she is destined to hunker down with Axel for the night. When he gets a look at her presentation, he likes what he sees and shares it with the others and she is hired. Instant chemistry, you bet! Do they act on it right away? No, but lines are crossed but they do get to know each other first. However, Maisie has some deep secrets even though she told Axel a portion of them, just not all of them. Her parents are trying to marry her off to an awful man. I'm not going to spoil this, you have to read all ab0ut it :)
I cannot wait for the next installment. This series is great! It could be read as a standalone but I recommend reading the first books, you will enjoy them.
**Received this ARC for review in audio from the publisher via NetGalley**
This is book two of the Lakeview Harbor Resort which features Axel and Maisie’s story. Axel, one of the owners of the resort is waiting to interview Maise who is an interior decorator. She is late for the interview due to stopping to help a turtle get across the road. Maisie has now missed her interview and a severe storm has started so she tries to find entry in the main lodge. Axel, not knowing that Maisie is his later interview, tackles her to the floor. As the storm rages and the generators are running due to power being knocked out, Axel and Maisie spend the first night at the lodge and then go to his cabin after that to save the generators are running. Axel instantly likes Maisie’s vision for the rooms and hired her after her presentation. As the relationship between them grows, Axel and Maisie are both running from past hurts which plays a part in their relationship. Can Axel get over his feelings of not being enough, not needed, and useless and can Maisie get over her feelings of not being enough and being a pawn in her parents game?
The characters in this story really stole my heart. The things they were feeling of not being loved, not wanted for who they are, and not being enough are all something people go through. That their love could conquer their fears made such a great story. Axel was so protective of Maisie and so supportive of her through the trials with her family. Maisie was understanding of Axel’s past and could see through all of it to know that he loves her. Absolutely loved this found family story and especially the banter in the guys texts to one another as well as their “ interventions”. This book has it all from fun banter, found family, love, friendship, and being around people who have your back. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series
#Resort Fling is the second book in Samantha Chase's Lakeview Harbor series and I loved it!
Masie Quinn is in dire straits and needs a job like yesterday. She is trying to make a go of her decorating business to prove to her overbearing parents that she can make a living by doing what she wants. She is also trying to avoid an arranged marriage that she wants no part of. She has found a job in Lakeview Harbor that she would be a great start, but she runs into some issues on the way to her interview.
Axel Hayes had a rough childhood and was in the foster care system. He met his group of best friends when he was placed with a foster family that took him to the resort that he and his buddies were now in the process of refurbishing. While he doesn't have the same background as his friends, they came from money, he's a skilled carpenter and has no problem with manual labor. He is due to interview a woman for the decorator position, but she's late.
Once Masie arrives, it becomes obvious very quickly that she is going to be stuck at the resort with Axel. The chemistry between them is difficult to deny, but he also sees her talent as a decorator. Now he's torn about what is best for the business. Will he take a chance on her as a woman, a designer or both?
Both Masie and Axel have a lot of baggage from things that have happened in their lives, but they are a good match in terms of encouraging the other person. I enjoyed how their relationship unfolded and I enjoyed the narrator as well. I am a huge fan of Chase's books and this one is no exception!
**I voluntarily listened to an early copy of this title courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
A group of childhood friends with diverse backgrounds, skills and interests have all become owners of the resort where they once spent their summers. The renovations and upgrades are nearly complete, and now they need an interior decorator to pull everything together to make the resort shine. With most of the owners out of town, Axel, who lives and works at the resort full time has been left to decide on which decorator to hire. A turtle and a powerful storm play a role in bringing Axel and Maisie together. Riding out the storm and its messy aftermath together leads her getting the job and to some sexy and steamy interludes. When the power is on and the cleanup crew arrives, it is Maisie who puts distance between them and insists that their fling was wonderful, but their relationship should become strictly professional from then on. Hurt and regrets stand between them, but Maisie doesn’t want to involve Axel any further into her messy and chaotic life. Of course his friends who are more like family get involved and do some meddling and behind the scenes investigating, with the intent to help Axel and Maisie find their way forward together.
Axel and Maisie are meant to be together. Both suffer from self-worth and self-image issues due to their absent and neglectful parents. They make a very real, deep connection during the time alone and in very close proximity to. They make each other feel safe, seen and truly wanted, something neither has felt in the past. Putting distance between them hurt them both, but Maisie truly wanted to protect him from the machinations of her controlling parents. Thank goodness for his friends/family who step up to support them both. I love the small town setting and can’t wait to read more about all these characters in the next books.
This heartstrings-tugging and riveting book has my wholehearted recommendation.
Oh my! Loved this so much It’s like catching up with good friends when I start reading the Lakeview Harbour stories. As I start to read I’m so excited to find out how all the resort gang are going and with what’s happening in their lives. This time it’s Axel’s story and we get to meet and fall in love with the woman that he chose to be his forever person. Axel (one of the owners) oversees and is working on the building of the resort, he is a hard working gorgeous, loyal man who’s had a hard life. In comes Maisie, late for her interview for the interior decorator position that they’re hiring for. Off to a bad start she finds herself stranded at the resort with Axel as a terrible storm keeps them isolated for days. They become close but Maisie is holding back about why she is so desperate to be hired for this job. Her life is in turmoil and as she tries to take charge of it she keeps secrets, which once revealed could mean the end of her time in Lakeview Harbour and with Axel. Will all be revealed and how will Axel take the news when it is finally out in the open? I adored all the characters in this book and was in my happy place listening to this story. Listening to the audiobook narrated by Rebecca Gibel was such a delight, I enjoyed her voice which was engaging and expressive. In my opinion this series is so much better if read in order, starting with the prequel #Resort Romance. I found this to be a fantastic addition to this series and can’t wait for more stories to come. Thank you to Samantha Chase, Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.
This is a heartwarming love story between two people who have experienced very little love in their lifetime. Maisie is an heiress whose uncaring parents have always been so ashamed of her weight, they ignore her. Axle is an orphan who grew up in foster care and is now a carpenter. He is one of the men who bought the antique resort to rebuild and reopen. Since he has no money, when his group of friends buy the resort, they decide that Axle will be in charge of the carpentry.
Maisie is having a huge battle with her domineering rich parents. When her parents set her up in a marriage of convenience with a man who has a disgusting reputation, she is furious. She decides to break away from her family, live on her own, and set up her own interior design business. Her emotionless parents send her away with no money and no help with the hope she will fail.
During a snowstorm, Maisie arrives late for an interview for a decorating job at the resort. Axle happens to be the only one there at that time. When Maisie and Axle meet, they immediately experience a strong connection that they cannot ignore. As they spend more time alone together, the sparks fly, and they end up in bed.
Masie is offered the job, and the couple’s strong affection quickly grows. Axle admires Masie’s strength and creativity. Maisie respects Axles kind heart and caring personality. She does not care that he has no money or a plebian job. In fact, Masie considers Axle to be her dream man
Even though, the couple must deal with Maisie’s problems, with the help of Axle’s friends, Maisie’s strength and intelligence and their very strong love, they are able to conquer their problem.
This is book 3 of the series (including the prequel), and it's my favorite so far. Found family is one of my favorite tropes, and while it's a running theme throughout the entire series, it is a major point in this book. Maisie has a shitty family. Axel had a shitty bio-family, but his adopted mom (the only one we actually see on page) was so sweet. But they find family with not only each other but with Axel's group of friends. Maisie as a character was okay. I liked her well enough, but she kept dragging her feet with not telling Axel the truth. Every day she waited amped up my annoyance with her. And then she got mad when her secret literally came to his door and talked down to him, making him upset? Honestly, Axel apologizing to her made me mad at him. He didn't need to grovel; she did. Ugh. Axel was too good for her. He was definitely the better of the two main characters. My favorite part of the book, the series as a whole, is the friend group. The main 6 met when they were kids at the resort, and now they've all came together as adults to rebuild the place that brought them so much joy. Overall, the story was okay. I've read a decent amount of Samantha's books, and this one was not my favorite out of them all but is my favorite in this particular series. The books in this series do seem to be getting better as it goes, and I believe Connor's book is next!
Rebecca Gibel did a good job narrating this book. I do wish there had been a male narrator since the story is dual POV.
3/5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Dreamscape Media, and Samantha Chase for an ALC of this book!
#Resort Fling is the second book in Samantha Chase’s Lakeview Harbor series. A group of childhood friends, Walker, Jayce, Axel, Connor, Milo, and Slater, from varied walks of life have joined forces to restore and renew the Lakeview Harbor Resort in conjunction with Walker’s grandparents, the original owners. Each brings his own resources and skills to the project. However, Axel’s skills are his resource. He has moved to the property to oversee and do the work. One task Axel and Connor have undertaken is to interview and choose the decorator. When their third and final appointment is very late and Connor has a plane to catch, the pair gives up and Connor leaves for the airport while Axel heads to town for supplies as a storm is heading their way. When Axel returns to the main building it’s to find a woman breaking in to get out of the storm.
Maisie Quinn has just begun her design business. In fact, if she could land the Lakeview Harbor job it would be her first job working with someone other than friends and acquaintances. But first she was late to her appointment due to a truck that wouldn’t start after she stopped quickly to save a tortoise, and then she is discovered moments before she broke a glass pane to get out of the raging storm only to be met be a mountain of a man. But Axel is kind, offers shelter, warmth, food, and much more.
This is a lovely story of two people from very different walks of life who were both neglected by uncaring and verbally abusive parents. And now they find themselves in this beautiful setting surrounded by caring friends and a chance to find happiness after so much dejection. This is such a good story and I do recommend it!
I am so happy to return to the Lakeview Harbor Resort and this amazing group of friends. Axel and Maisie's workplace romance is entertaining with a good balance of sweet and spicy, and heartfelt emotion. Axel Hayes feels like he has to prove himself to his friends and partners because he didn't have the same money to invest in restoring the resort where they all met and became family. But he has the zeal, and skills to make it happen. Maisie comes from a wealthy family but wants to make it on her own and not be ruled by her controlling parents. Axel and Maisie's first meet cute during a storm is awkward and funny. They are stranded together in the resort and their attraction and chemistry is sizzling. Maisie is at the resort hoping to land the job as their decorator. Axel loves her ideas and begins falling for her as well. As they work on the resort together, and she builds friendships with the partners as well, Maisie is excited to be accepted for who she is and not her family's money. But when her secrets are revealed, will Axel feel betrayed and unworthy of her? Axel and Maisie came from completely different worlds but are so much the same with their determination to achieve their goals, and their chemistry was explosive! I really enjoyed their heart-pounding journey to find acceptance and to feel worthy of love. Rebecca Gibel continues to narrate this series and delivers all the wit, emotion, and steam beautifully. I really enjoyed listening to her performance as she brought this fun, engaging, emotional, and steamy romance to life.
Some things are best when they’re straightforward—like a straight line. People, for example. I appreciate folks who are even-keeled: never too high, never too low, just cruising comfortably down the middle. Books, though? Books should be roller coasters. They need peaks and valleys, tension and payoff. This one stayed stubbornly flat. No highs, no lows, just a long stretch of meh. Add in the fade-to-black scenes, and it ultimately reads less like a romance and more like something that wandered out of the genre entirely.
Large sections read like my daughter bursting through the door and word-vomiting her entire day at me in 5.25 seconds. Every inner monologue, text exchange, and “deep conversation” existed solely to regurgitate backstory. There was no mystery, she just lifted up her skirt and gave us the goods. A little narrative complexity could have gone a long way here, but unfortunately, it never showed up.
Then came the pièce de résistance: the narrator mumbled. Multiple times. I think she was going for brooding or moody exchanges, but no joke, I had to crank the volume just to make out what she was saying. This came back to bite me, though, because the moment she suddenly yelled, it scared the absolute crap out of me. Lesson learned: never, do this while driving.
I’m sure there’s an audience for this book, it just isn’t me. If you like your bad boys sweet, considerate, and surprisingly well-spoken despite a “really rough upbringing" and trade job, your plot heavy on sugar… and then a little more sugar, this one’s for you.
Resort Fling by Samantha Chase is a sweet, small-town romance with opposites-attract energy, a secret identity twist, and lots of closed-door spice.
Maisie is escaping an overbearing family and an unwanted arranged marriage, determined to prove she can make it on her own. A job opportunity at Lakeview Harbor Resort feels like the perfect fresh start—until a storm, a rogue turtle, and an awkward break-in land her face-to-face with Axel. Axel is finally finding his place helping his friends rebuild the resort, and when the two get stranded together, a “weekend fling” turns into so much more.
Yes, it starts out a bit insta-love, but thankfully the relationship gets some breathing room. Axel and Maisie may be opposites on paper, but emotionally they’re mirrors—both insecure and in desperate need of the found family that surrounds them (which I genuinely loved).
Axel, though… whew. Early Axel? Absolute book-boyfriend material. Late Axel? Insecure, dramatic, and overthinking everything. He’s excellent at hyping Maisie up, but definitely needs to practice what he preaches.
I’m usually an extra-spicy reader, so the closed-door romance wasn’t my go-to, but it fit the cozy, feel-good tone. Overall, Resort Fling was a fun, heartfelt read with a sweet ending. I didn’t fall madly in love—but I’d happily visit Lakeview Harbor again.
Bonus points for the audio—Rebecca Gibel was fantastic and brought so much charm to the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for providing the audio ARC. All opinions are my own. 💛
Maisie Quinn needs a job and quick. Her parents are trying to force her into an arranged marriage to a guy she wants no part of and they have cut her off financially. She has a month to prove she can make it on her own. When she sees the ad for her dream job being an interior designer for the Lakeview Harbor Resort she heads that way for an interview with the owners only to stop on the way to help a turtle and then get stuck in a storm and now the owners are gone.
Axel Hayes grew up in the foster care system which is different from his best friends. They all used to go to the resort as kids and decided they wanted to bring it back to life but instead of money like his friends, he's willing to do the manual labor and carpentry work. When all his friends leave for the weekend and he's staying at the resort working they leave him to deal with meeting the last applicant for the designer job which is fine except she's an hour late and he catches her breaking into the resort.
With the storm Maisie is stuck at the resort with Axel and the more they talk and spend time together it becomes more but now Axel is torn about hiring her. She has secrets that she hasn't told Axel about. What happens when he finds out who she really is.
4.25 stars I really enjoyed this story. Axel was kind to Maisie and understood her and wouldn't allow her to talk bad about herself. Looking forward to the next book!
*Resort Fling* is the delightful second book in the Lakeview Harbor series, and it's all about Axel and Maisie's journey to find their happily ever after! Although they come from very different backgrounds, they discover just how much they have in common—especially when it comes to their past struggles with feeling unwanted and the drive to prove themselves.
Axel is lucky to have wonderful friends who believe in him and have supported him over the years, even when he sometimes feels like he has to earn his place in their group. This really highlights the true meaning of friendship! Maisie, on the other hand, has had a different experience, growing up with fake friendships and family drama, as her family tried to set her up for an arranged marriage.
What starts as a casual fling between Axel and Maisie quickly turns into something much deeper. Their feelings and intense passion for each other just can’t be ignored! Yet Maisie is hesitant to pull Axel into her family's troubles, and she finds herself pushing him away as she tries to figure things out on her own.
Chase has crafted some fantastic characters and engaging side stories in this inviting world. I got completely swept up in their journey and loved seeing Axel and his friends work tirelessly to restore the resort, making it even better and ready to welcome guests again!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
#𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐅𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 is the second book in the Lakeview Harbor series by Samantha Chase, featuring an entertaining opposite sides of the tracks, fling to more romance for Maisie and Axel. I love a swoon-worthy blue collar hero, and watching Axel click with the runaway heiress trying to build a life for herself away from the oppressive plans of her wealthy parents was quite a treat. I wasn’t expecting them both to have such highly emotional backstories, as well as an undeniable connection and chemistry so quickly after being thrown together by a storm and a missed job interview. Maisie had an admirable strength and ambition to succeed, and Axel was just such a good man despite his rough start and his vulnerabilities that broke my heart! The thing that I love most about this series is the found family vibe of the friend group at the core of this renovation, determined to bring this resort back to life so it can continue to impact lives like it did for all of them! I’ll admit I was a bit surprised that Kelsey and Jayce completely disappeared from this book. They were in the group texts in Book 1, but nothing here, until they were thrown in during the epilogue, with the spelling changed on Jayce’s name in the ARC. It did feel odd, given the emphasis on the friend group, but it didn’t overshadow the story. I enjoyed the plot twists, the banter, the great world building, and the romance, and I’m excited to see the next man fall!
I received an ARC for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️.5
Axel might have to be my favorite of the series. He is so real. The friendship he has with Milo, Slater, Walker, and Connor is what makes his story so unique. Unlike the rest, Axel didn't come for money nor is wealthy now. He was brought up in foster care and his biological mother never wanted anything to do with him. He felt unworthy of love because of that. From the first moment he met Maisie he knew she was different. The time they spent together during the storm his feelings for her was something he never expected. Although he knew nothing of her background he still felt a connection. Maisie was trying to escape her family, not wanting anything to do with the arranged marriage her parents orchestrated. Trying to prove to herself she didn't need them and she can make it on her own. What she never thought she would find when she arrived in Harbortown was home. Axel and his friends took her in as though she was family. Axel treated her like no one ever had. He fell in love with her for the woman he saw. He got to know her (even though she hid her identity). The love they found with each other was a pure love. No outside influence. A love that she thought she would never find because of what her parents made her believe about herself. For Axel he never thought someone would love him. Together they were the missing piece to make the other whole. A happily ever after and forever love neither one saw coming.
