Falling For The Dragons of Firth City #2

Falling for the Goalie Next Door

Rate this book
I told the entire PTA that my grumpy next-door neighbor was my secret fiancé–before I found out who he really was.

My neighbor in apartment 4B hates small talk, sunshine, and probably me.
But when I blurt out that we’re engaged—right in front of the entire school fundraiser—he plays along.

One awkward kiss later, we’re fake-engaged.

But it turns out the grumpy next-door neighbor is full of secrets.
Like being a famous hockey goalie.

He picks me out a gorgeous ring.
Gives me a puck during the game.
And his shy smiles make my heart flutter.

My dad warns me to stay away.
But it’s too late–I’m already in, heart-first.

Then I find out he’s been lying to me for months.

He’s the anonymous artist I’ve been writing to—the one I trusted with all my secrets.

Now I haven’t just lost my fake fiancé, my artist penpal and my dignity.
I’ve lost my heart.

Sweet enough to make you sigh, and clean enough to share with your grandma--no steamy scenes, no salty language, just sweet romance.

Harper and Theo . . . (Awesome Story)

Preparing for the Fall Fest, Harper Lane, an elementary school teacher, told the PTA that she was inviting a mystery guest, referring to T.R. who was her favorite artist. Since his P.O. box was at her post office, she had assumed he lived nearby. She had seen a mural he painted on a brick wall that captured her attention and admiration. She began to write to him and he wrote back to her. She has no idea why she mailed a flyer to his P.O. box inviting him to this school event, but she keeps looking around for him, not sure how she will even know him since half the people are in Fall costumes. When a man admiring the cupcake she had made, decorated with a frosting paintbrush in case T.R. came, she ran toward him in excitement. But when he turned toward her, it was one of the tenants, Theo, whose apartment was next door to hers. He was a quiet man who rarely communicates except with grunts and nods, definitely not her exciting mystery penpal. All the teachers gathered around to find out who this man was. When Ms. Peterson asked if he was her fiance, she loudly repeated "Fiance???" and the damage was done. Theo steps up beside her and they begin to congratulate them! After a shocked moment, he moves closer and puts his arm around her and she felt herself melt against him! Theo is surprised that no one has recognized him as Theo Russo, the Dragons' hocky team goalie, although he does try to disappear after the games. Then someone yells, "KISS HER!" and their audience starts to clap. He feels like he is at a pep rally, but Harper's eyes plead with him and it then it's just the two of them as they kiss. The cheers and whistles bring them back to reality and he quickly escapes out the gym door. How is he going to escape from this lie? And how will he tell her he is her mystery anonymous penpal she shares all of her thoughts, dreams, and secrets with? She will never trust him again.

Harper is also going crazy. She meets Lexi for coffee and tells her what happened, confessing she sort of liked the kiss. But she went home and needed to write to T.R. who would help her figure it out... he may have even been there at her invitation, but he always had good advice for her. But she decided not to. As for Theo, his hockey buddy Captain Logan was semi-teasing him about his fiancee. Actually, the whole team had heard about it, one of them claiming their "little Teddy Bear has found true love... our boy is growing up". And of course, he blushed. He hadn't realized one of the teachers captured it all on her phone and posted it. Logan suggested that if he loves her, buy her a ring.

But when Harper discovers her grumpy next-door neighbor has been dishonest with her, will she be able to give up her artist penpal T.R. who listens and gives her good advice, the Dragons' hockey team goalie, and the neighbor next door she has fallen in love with?

Harper, “…a tornado in a cardigan that lives next door,”. Theo AKA Teddy AKA TR, “Every part of my life is shades of gray.” Their lives intersect as neighbors that acknowledge each other until a public school fundraiser and suddenly they are much more, or are they? This may have one of my top 10 main male characters. I was completely invested in this story. World go away, I’m reading.

Falling for the Goalie Next Door is a great sweet read about a Harper (an elementary school teacher) and Theo (goalie for the Firth City Dragons). This is the second book in the Firth City Dragons series. However, it can be read as a standalone book.

The story begins with Harper organizing the school's autumn wonderland fundraiser. She is trying to keep herself busy while wait to see who shows up to support her, she has invited all of her neighbors from her apartment building and her pen pal, T.R., an artist that she has never but has been writing to for some time. While she is stressing out in walks Theo, goalie, neighbor, and secret artist T.R. Theo is the standard brooding hockey player who hides behind his dark hoodies and hunched shoulders. Theo and Harper have been friends for some time, but they end in a fake engagement through a series of misunderstands, but quickly realize individually that they would like more. But Theo is hiding some big secrets in his past and present and the longer he holds onto them, the longer and bigger they become. He is digging himself a dipper hole.

As Theo and Harper start to move forward with the possibility of a real relationship, they must deal with meddling co-workers, secrets from the past, secret identities, meddling family members, and more emotions that imaginable. There are a lot of highs and lows in this story that will hold your attention wondering what will happen to next.

I would recommend this story; it held my interest and kept me rooting for Theo. I will admit I struggled with following the storyline for Harper’s father. I felt it was a little hard to follow and some of it was unnecessary and not a very supportive parent. But I would read it again and I will watch for any further books in the series.

I received an ARC copy of this book and I am leaving an honest voluntary review.

Harper has a crush on an artist named T.R., who puts murals on walls in the middle of the night. She also kind of has a thing for her next door neighbor, Theo, who hardly speaks to her. Though she doesn’t know it yet, T.R. and Theo are one in the same, but there’s a third facet of himself she hasn’t met yet—he’s the goalie for the Dragons hockey team.

While at a fundraiser for her school (to which she invited her whole apartment building), Theo/Teddy/T.R. shows up, and when she’s seen talking to him, somehow all her busybody colleagues are assuming they’re dating and engaged to be married.

It’s crazy how fast a rumor can spread, until no one believes it’s a rumor, but fact.

Teddy goes along with the assumption that he and Harper are engaged, and even bows to peer pressure to kiss her. Problem is, it’s real for him, but he hasn’t told Harper the truth about his artwork.

I loved watching these two stumble into a relationship. It’s clear to me that Teddy has social anxiety, and boy, do I know how that feels. In fact, I could strongly identify with Teddy and his thoughts throughout the book. It’s not easy to navigate a world that’s build by extroverts, for extroverts. But somehow, we always seem to carve out places for ourselves.

Of course you know that all of the facets of Teddy are going to collide, and it’s not going to be pretty. Good thing this book has a happy ending. I really enjoy this series, and I’m looking forward to the next book, which I think will be Harper’s friend Lexi? And hockey player Nico? That’s what it looks like. And I will be right here waiting.

I received an ARC from the author and though I wasn’t required to post a review I wanted to because I really liked this book!

Susie has written a book that read like real life to me! I could actually picture Harper and Theo’s interactions in this book which is rare in my experience in reading!

Both Harper and Theo have hidden fears as most of us do but Harper is a bubbling spontaneous person who seems to speak before she thinks, while Theo is reserved. However, her next door neighbor Theo has liked her for a long time and when he is at a PTA fundraiser she invites him to, she blurts out that Theo is her fiancé! He is shocked but goes along with it and later they try to figure out what to do about it now.

Follow the ups and downs of a fake relationship that turns out to be anything but until Theo’s past confronts him and then a secret he has wanted to tell Harper but hasn’t is uncovered and leads to a real breakup. Now Theo needs to decide how he can get Harper back without her thinking it’s nothing but another elaborate lie!

I loved this book and wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend it to romcom lovers everywhere as one I know you’ll love! As I mentioned the situations are real life to me as I and I’m sure you will agree are very realistic to real life! Ah fear and lack of communication the two prong destroyer of most relationships before adultery rears its ugly head!

If you love romcoms you’ll love this book believe me!Like me you’ll think it was a real life story and who knows somewhere out there it just may be!

Is a sweet opposites attract, fake engagement, secret identity, hockey romance with no cliffhanger.
Some of the lines I really like --- "I'm gonna have to move. To the moon. Mars, maybe. Somewhere without cell service or nosy coworkers or—" --- Real things rarely start clean. They begin with accidents, tangled timing, and words we don’t know how to say. What matters is what comes next. --- “You’re lucky. You get to just be a dog. No secrets. No fake relationships.” --- she’s braver than she gives herself credit for. That she doesn’t have to apologize for the things that make her flinch in the dark. --- “That was brutal. But you did agree to a fake relationship and didn't treat it like a real one. In a real relationship, communication is very important. And maybe honesty is what you both need right now.” --- "The longer a secret lives, the harder it dies." --- you're letting things end without a fight." --- "Because sometimes the truth just looks messy—until you explain it." --- I've been a coward. Letting my fear of rejection, of not being enough, overshadow everything else. ---
What's Lexi up to? What's Theo's teammates up to? What's Josie up to? These and other questions will all be answered.
I loved Harper and Theo's story and I'm sure you will too. This is the first book of her's that I've read and it definitely won't be the last. I can't wait to read her next book.

I was completely invested and engaged in this ged in the romantic tension of this clean hockey themed mistaken (🤔) identity storyline. Theo was an adorably broody, introverted gentle soul. Understanding his history I was heartbroken for what he endured, rose above. Less is shared about Haroer's background, but she didn't have an easy go either. I was rooting for them from the beginning. Despite fully engaging from the start, the climax and ending left me deeply unsatisfied. (Sorry🤷‍♀️). It was the character favoritism displayed when it came to accepting culpability for their choices and actions. The lack of appropriate balance left me irritated and one and hurting and empathetic with the other. Ugh, sharing inner thoughts with the reader doesn't communicate them between characters in the book. My rating (a 5⭐️ up to that point) took a nose-dive when I closed the book with the lingering feeling of frusteration.

I did receive a gift copy of this book and voluntarily provided this review.

Clean, funny, sweet and mysterious. She is a teacher, he a professional goalie. Neither one were in a rush for marriage. But he became her neighbor, and she always gave and helped her neighbors. He basically was a recluse and dressed down, hiding his face. She did not realize she had bought one of his paintings. The signature was only initials. Being kind, she invited him to the schools fall carnival. She didn’t expect him to come, but he did. Before you know it, her whole school thought they were a couple. He didn’t want to embarrass her so he went along with it. Before the night was over, her friends bumped them up to engaged and then began the schools teachers and principal planning their wedding in details. Who would do each task. But that’s only scratching the surface. There is so many funny parts and great conversations to be told

A sweet (like cookies), heartfelt story with adorable characters.
Surprisingly, in this story there are a lot of romantic people who are so invested in the MCs' engagement. Those who know it's fake expect them to develop real feelings sooner or later.
Inspiring, cheerful, stress-baker Harper doesn't know her neighbor well, and she gets four personalities in one person.
Not clearing misunderstandings right away makes everything more complicated, and it's harder to resolve them.
For me, not a swoon-worthy first kiss under pressure and in public.
At least quiet loner Theo (sweet Teddy) is honest with himself about his feelings and understands the consequences of lies. He's scared and behaves cowardly.
They torture me with an inevitable breakup.
Part of their thoughts have valid points.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

This book had my heart all wrapped up from page one! Harper and Theo's story was sweet, vulnerable, hilarious, and full of pretense that really wasn't! I LOVED that art played such a big part of this story, right alongside hockey and teaching! Theo was the perfect mix of smooshie, doubt, and love all wrapped in a tough, shy shell. Harper was pure joy wrapped in an awkward, shy, loveable shell. Her students made me laugh and go awwwwww. Here is an example:
“Jamie told me, ‘He must be magic. He can see hearts and draw them.’”
How sweet is that!! Then another quote that shows Theo's wonderful heart:
"He stops walking, turning to face me with those serious eyes that always see straight through me. 'I'm still falling,' he says simply. 'Every day.'"
This book was so wonderful. Read it today!!

The comfy fake dating story you didn’t know you needed!

Falling for the Goalie Next Door by Susie Heart is put now! This was such a sweet, fun read! Theo and Harper are adorable together, with effortless chemistry. Their story is just right for a cozy, fall day, curled up with a blanket and your favorite hot beverage. Looking for fake dating? Yep…Or is it really fake? 🤔 Secret pining? You bet! Secret identity and pen pals? Yes, that too! Throw in a shy hockey player and a sweet teacher who grew up with a hockey coach father who turned her off the game, a crushing third act break, charcter growth and a sweet grand gesture, and this story will hit you in all the feels.

I was given a complimentary copy if this book. Thoughts and opinions are my own.

I was pulled into the story from the beginning. Harper finds herself fake engaged to her quiet neighbor by accident during a charity event. She doesn't know that he's the hockey team's goalie or her secret pen pal. She finds out about his hockey career quickly, but the tension leading up to her discovering his other identity creates the suspense that propels the plotline as Teddy reveals his vulnerabilities and insecurities as he considers how to tell Harper. Add that he has a past that her father maliciously reveals to Harper, you silently root for Harper to see past the omissons to the heart of the man before her.

The story is full of emotional moments that brought tears to my eyes and kept me turning pages to find out what happened next. A great second book in this series.

MC: Harper Lane, teacher and Theo Russo, Dragons' goalie - First person dual POV

Theo captured me with his quiet steadiness. I enjoyed seeing Harper fall in love with Theo. There were typical story arcs that you could see from a mile away but the story flowed so easily I couldn't stop reading. This is definitely going in my go-to book shelf. Definitely recommend it.

I read an ARC copy of the book and this is my honest review.

Oh, my, is it a purposeful lie, a lie of omission, or just a mistake by a shy misunderstood young man? Okay, it is hard to think of a hockey goalie as being shy and retiring, but Theo really is. Also, he’s not just Theo, the shy neighbor, but he is also Theo Russo, the goalie for the Firth City Dragons, and T. R., the street art artist. Has he waited too long to let his next-door neighbor and accidental fiancée, Harper, know all those identities? The author gave us a good story and keeps you involved.

Making It Real

Harper and Theo are so sweet together. There are so many layers to this story and the star goalie. Harper is the perfect third grade teacher and neighbor. Lexi is the hysterically funny best friend. Theo has a whole locker room filled with his best friends. All of these people make a memorable romance with an ending that makes one smile and ready to read the next book in the series.

A wonderful story, mesmerizing, heartfelt, and intensely romantic. I loved Theo and Harper, Theo’s proposal was just perfect, but my favourite character was Lexi, her comments were delightful: “That man looks at you like you’re the Stanley Cup”. Highly recommended.

A simple love story.

Theo and Harper's story was a simple romance and love story. Seems her dad tried to break them up but it didn't work. She's a teacher and he is a hockey star goalie and and artist in secret! A lovely story no hot love scenes. Just a kiss or two and holding hands. I enjoyed their story.

Loved it

I like following their story and how it came about. The surprise was that Theo had already spotted her out and liked her before they became engaged and started their media relationship. But you will have to read if he makes things worse or better. It is never good to keep secrets even when you find yourself in a tough spot. Read to find out what happens.

So swoon worthy!

Harper and Theo are so good together! I love their chemistry! Theo, quiet and intense, wanting to be worthy.
Harper, a chaos bomb waiting to happen. She is sweet and kind, a teacher, and generous.
They make such a sweet couple.
I really love the writing style, and keep going to the next book when I'm done.

This was a good read. This is a slow burn that is sweet and clean (kisses only). The beginning is a bit rushed, but the pacing evens out . Tropes: pen pals, hidden identity, he falls first, fake dating

Sweet, cute, funny, and surprisingly deep the story of Theo and Harper has you rooting for both characters to get out of their own way to find happiness. Supporting cast is funny as heck and you can’t help falling in love with these genuine characters.

I really enjoyed this simple yet captivating tale of romance and fake to real love. The untouchable meets the sweet teacher. It was a refreshing breath of air with laughter built in. It was exactly what this tired gal needed to get some life pumped back into her.

I enjoyed this story about Harper and Theo each with doubts and insecurities except when doing their jobs of teacher and goalie. Both aware of how well they fit together but unsure how to take that leap from fake engagement to real or when things go wrong taking a stand and fighting for it.

Vague interactions

There is very little interaction between the two main characters on the page. Most of the relationship is referred through vague terms. Good concept but needs work.
