Where there’s a witch…

Formerly wicked witch Milla never thought she could practice her magick publicly, much less work as an Enforcer of C.R.O.W. — the Coven for the Regulation and Oversight of Witches. Yet here she is, hunting local cryptids and solving witchy crimes at the behest of their coven leader, Lou.

Yet with every passing day, Lou tightens her hold on Milla’s leash. If she steps too far out of line, Lou binds her Way tighter, cutting Milla off from her magick.

Not that any witch could blame Lou. The last time she was unsupervised, Milla stole the magick from Beltane and used it to stop a terrifying entity from threatening the region and possessing her not-boyfriend, Darkly.

There’s always a Way.

But as Darkly struggles with the aftermath of Beltane, and his part in the fallout, Milla must choose between doing as she’s told, or standing up to his sister — the one witch who can make or break her. Milla is desperate to help Darkly, at her wit’s end with a pile of glamoured leggings, and worse, the billionaire she rescued at Beltane is wooing her with coffee, flowers, and occult items last seen at the scene of the crime.

The stakes are higher than ever as Milla is pulled between her demesne, her strained not-relationship, and her duties to C.R.O.W. while unknown ritualists threaten their world-ending summons again.

B.L. Brown is a writer of paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy. She loves a good slow burn but recognizes that sometimes two characters collide with explosive chemistry that must be acknowledged. And boy, is it fun to read.

Ritual Tools picks up right after the events of Ritual Dues, with Milla and Darkly dealing with the aftermath of Beltane. One of those bits of fallout is the billionaire they saved on Beltane (and who happens to be Milla's landlord) becoming obsessed with Milla. Another part is Darkly's sister Lou becoming even more insufferably controlling of him and Milla and their magic.

When the billionaire reveals that he found an old book in the woods after Beltane, Lou orders Milla and Darkly to do whatever the billionaire wants in order to study the book and figure out if it holds clues to the ritual they interrupted.

Milla and Darkly are still their usual hot bi/pan disaster selves in Ritual Tools. They're both obviously deeply in love with each other, but won't admit it, which causes strain on their undefined relationship. Lou being Lou (like I seriously didn't think the author could make me hate her more than I did in the last book, but here we are) also adds unnecessary strain on both.

Diego is still a delight, Tobias is becoming slightly more likable (though no less mysterious), and Dies-Well is the vampire BFF every girl needs. And the billionaire? That guy is the worst. 🤮

Thank you B.L. Brown for the opportunity to advance read for you again. 💚

[I RECEIVED A FREE COPY OF THIS BOOK AS AN ARC]

[CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS]

A rag-tag coven of witches are left reeling after thwarting a ritual that almost claimed the life of one of their own. A death witch and her not-boyfriend continue to figure out where they stand as a couple. A billionaire sets his sights on said death witch and wants to… what does he want exactly?

B.L. Brown likes to weave these artfully constructed, intricate, borderline convoluted tapestries that take us on a wild goose chase until we finally reach the cathartic release of the book’s climax. The problem? Much like Darkly and Milla’s relationship arc, it feels like I’m reading the same story over and over with minor changes and little development for our main characters. Every book feels like we’re starting over with Milla and Darkly in the exact same place. I want to root for them, but I’m getting tired of it.

Barring our two main characters, I felt a clear evolution in the rest of our characters' arcs and stories and honestly, I’m far more interested in reading about them. Toby and Milla’s relationship progresses in a way that seems way more healing for Milla than her relationship with Darkly. Diego and Milla’s relationship is also healing, and we finally get to see more of Rai, which I love.

From the jump I didn’t particularly care for Stefan, and I was right, but at least it gave us an interesting new story line.

Lou????

I am hoping for a palette cleanser novella before the next book so I can continue to read more about these characters and this world but without the constant, continuous turmoil of Milla and Darkly. And don’t get me wrong, I am very excited to see where this story takes us, especially as it pertains to Lou and her role in all this but I also hope that the next installation comes with some very necessary development for Milla and Darkly’s relationship. Either that or just make them break up already.
