Ralph could be described as a rogue on a good day.
A bad day involved a lot of cursing, calling him a pirate, or sometimes even having a shoot-out.
It wasn’t really his fault of course, or so he would have you believe.
It was the fault of those who wanted to get in his way of making as much money as possible as a smuggler.
His family had been gifted with a letter of marque for the Terran Confed, one that is inherited and has been passed down to him.
Essentially it gives him a lot of loop-holes and ways through regulations to be a fantastic smuggler.
Or as a legal pirate, a Privateer.
The Confed and it’s neighbors are about to be plunged into a world of war that spans across the entirety of their universe.
From the citizens of the Blood to the Scrap-Worlds on the outer edges of the Confed, the life of everyone is going to change.
And Ralph?
Well, Ralph is about to get a brand new letter of marque to add to his others, along with a new hand. Thankfully it isn't a hook, though he's keeping his options open.
Ralph Turlan will go from Privateer with a commission to a Privateer Governor and permission to expand even as he plunders from fleets and ships alike.
It’s time to go collect Turlan’s Toll from anyone who crosses his path.
Let’s just hope the crew of cast-offs better fit for the isle of misfit toys can come together quickly.
I’m tough on harem books, the whole concept of several women living together and sharing a single man with no drama is just too alien for me to conceive. Plus, it’s always; once a gorgeous woman initially sees the main character she falls hopelessly in lust with him. But I knew all this going in, after all I read the first book in this series. However, I didn’t remember as much juvenile flirting and sexual banter in the first book as this one had. Really it was too much, it took away from the storyline. In addition, one of the supporting characters was an attractive vice-admiral (naturally) who didn’t freak out when the main character openly flirts with her in front of her junior officers (really!). Look, if you’re into all this, and I’m sure a lot of readers are, it’s a nonissue. The last 25% of the book actually was pretty good, so there’s potential here. I think the story premise and character all can be really good if the unprofessional sexual banter is dialed back. I don’t see book 3 in my future.
I've read quite a few of this author's works and the dialogue in this story felt very disjointed and weird. It was like everyone was hesitating while they were speaking.
The story itself is very entertaining and I like where everything is going but two out of three times when characters spoke, there was a lot of hesitation and double speak rather than just what they had to say.
I would expect to see that when characters were hesitating, or nervous, or were on edge, but when they were speaking in general? It felt a little off.
This isn't first series by this author. The storyline and characters are the priority. Relationships occur differently as characters are developed. There is plenty of action, humor and an appropriate amount of sexual activity which emphasizes romance rather than explicit details. The storyline is exciting, the characters are varied with individual personalities, and all are well developed.
Loving this new series and can't wait to see where the author goes with it! My only regret so far is very little interaction between Ralf and Lord Hesh. However, it didn't detract from the story at all. Very well thought out battles, very plausible explanations to actions, and very enjoyable to read.
I want more, like right now. And I hope to god the author doesn't stop at three damn books again, because im getting really tired of reading a series and just not getting a damn conclusion. Love this series, love that the MC isn't a "good guy" and I would recommend this book to people.
Outstanding story and exciting tales of Daring Do! Another amazing outing in the world of The Cavalier and The Privateer. Great world building, characters who grow and the odd Easter Eggs 🐰 to add some spice. I highly recommend this and look forward to seeing where it leads.
You will be hard pressed to find a better science fiction story/series in any genre then this one!!! I have laughed so hard I cried at the antics of the MC and the crew!!! Cheered their wins and worried about the danger!!! Thus an absolute blast of a series and in my humble opinion some of this authors best writings!!!!
Well written as are all of Randy Darren's works. Space battles, intrigue and sheet wrestling.
Especialy enjoyed the intersection with the Cavalier series. A refresher of the characters at the beginning would have been helpful as I couldnt remember all of the characters and it took awhile for me to realize that Rio was a pet name for Marionette.
Book 2 continues the story of the first. Ralph and his band of merry women stealing from the... well anyone and giving to his crew.
It was a fun story with a few twists and turns. I still don't know what the deal with Janey was and wonder if she just didn't vibe with the story so the author did what he did.
If you’re already reading his stuff, you know exactly what I mean. If you haven’t, you should really pick up a copy. Check out his other pen name, William D. Arand.
Loved the characters, the twists and turns, but the mesh of stories for the individual characters was whashined most for me and I loved it! Looking very forward to more!!
As always these stories are exceptionally entertaining. This one gives it a switch up on the genre. Though it does bring an uneasy tone to that one scene. Oddly wholesome at times too.
I liked this one even more than the first book since the characters got to actually grow more. I like Ralph as a character even if he's not as cool as Wayne.
I‘ve read a couple of books by Darren and Privateers Commission is my favorite series among them. The characters are unique and amazing, the story is fast paced and exciting and - different from the sovereign-verse, this isn’t about the fight against some omnipotent evil entity but just a fun adventure with a roguish pirate like protagonist.
The cast im book 2 got bigger and the harem officially started (in book 1 it was just Rio), but its still relatively small compared to the authors other books, which im quite thankful for. Already looking forward to book 3 and to Ralph becoming a proper pirate lord!
