Years ago, he left his life as an assassin behind. He took a vow. Never again. Until they tried to kill the woman he’s always loved.
Dean “Bullseye” Reynolds wears a single rifle bullet on a cord around his neck. But not many people know why.
It's a reminder of a sniper mission gone wrong. The last shot he swore he would never take. After leaving that life behind, he's happy being a wanderer. Summers as a sympathetic ear behind the bar, winters teaching on the slopes.
There's only one woman who ever tempted him to stay in one place.
Then he hears what happened. Deputy Keira Marsh was almost killed, and those masked thugs think they got away with it.
Now, Dean’s going back to Hart County to make things right. He'll keep Keira safe with his life, even if she's too pure for his damaged heart. And he'll hunt them down. Even if it means breaking his vow.
For her, he’ll seek vengeance. But her love could be his redemption.
I write suspenseful romance with pulse-pounding danger, fun & flirty banter, and tons of heart (plus spice!). Both a Californian and a Texan in my past, I now live in the Colorado mountains with my family.
This was Dean and Kiera's story and I loved it! The characters so real, I felt their emotions, their love for each other and their family and friends, their pain.
A great story, so good that the pages seem to turn themselves and interesting enough to read more than one.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I’ve read other books by Hannah Shield so when I had an opportunity to read an ARC of this book, I jumped at the chance. It’s quite unusual to begin a series by reading the last book first, but it didn’t matter. The book could definitely stand alone and be thoroughly enjoyable. I loved both the characters and the storylines and I can’t wait to start reading this series from the beginning!
One Last Shot is the 6th and last book in the Last Refuge Protectors series. I actually didn’t know that going in. All the books in the series are interconnected standalone books and each one is about a different couple. The few characters of the first five books are featured as side characters in this one. This book is about Dean and Keira. He is a former assassin and she is the sheriffs deputy. They have been friends for years, not knowing how each one feels about the other. The story takes place in a small town Hart County and in the first few pages you already get a sense of the small town vibes which I love. Also the characters are relatable and you really feel for them. Dean has a dark past which he doesn’t share with anyone and it affects the way he lives his life. Keira feels like his only light, but circumstances and timing makes it hard for them to be together. I was definitely rooting for them from beginning till the end. With everything going on and the things they go through, they are well deserving of a HEA. I give this book 5 stars. I loved the plot, characters and overall vibe of the book. I couldn’t put it down, because I wanted to know how the story would unfold. It got me emotional at times and tugged at my heart strings. The story of Dean and Keira is just so sweet and beautiful. Even though this is the first book I read of this author, it made me curious to other books she has written and can’t wait to read more of her books.

One Last Shot is the sixth and final book in Last Refuge Protectors series. I'm not ready to let go of these characters and this world. Delivers a potent blend of high-stakes action and deeply resonant emotional conflict. It's not a simple revenge story but a meticulously crafted exploration of love's redemptive power against a backdrop of haunting pasts and present dangers. One Last Shot weaves (self-) forgiveness and the courage required to accept love, even when one feels irreparably broken and undeserving of any kind of affection. Its compelling narrative proves that sometimes the most dangerous shot isn’t the one fired from a rifle, but the one taken on love, vulnerability, and the possibility of a future forged from the ashes of a painful past.
Dean is a tortured hero and a former assassin haunted by his past and the heavy burden of a vow he carries as if it were a physical weight. His self-imposed exile—as a wanderer, bartender, or ski instructor—is a direct consequence of his belief that his past renders him unworthy of stable, pure love. Keira, the steadfast and fiercely independent deputy sheriff, represents the very light he feels he doesn't deserve. Their history is steeped in quiet, unacknowledged longing, mutual pining, and a friendship simmering with unspoken desire—only to be broken by Dean’s retreat from Hart County and from Keira herself. When Dean learns that Keira has been attacked, his carefully constructed isolation shatters. His return to Hart County, ostensibly masked by a desire for revenge, is actually an act of deeper devotion—a realization of the depth of his love and a strong urge to protect the woman he has always loved, even if it means breaking his vow and confronting the very demons he sought to escape. Dean’s internal battle between his violent past and his yearning for a future with Keira forms the central conflict of their love story and evolving dynamic. The grim memento he carries around his neck serves as a constant reminder of his self-recrimination and the reasons he keeps them apart. The tension arising from their shared history and Dean’s self-perceived unworthiness is expertly woven throughout the narrative. Keira is a force to be reckoned with—strong, determined, capable, and unapologetically direct. She remains true to herself, even through hurt and her initial resistance to Dean’s reentry into her life, demanding explanations. Dean’s groveling is not a simple apology but a painful, vulnerable breaking down of the walls and defenses he has built over the years, along with his unwavering belief that he is not “good enough”. This allows Keira to see the man beneath the hardened exterior. Their romance is built on raw intimacy, palpable longing, undeniable chemistry, a slow burn, deep affection, and mutual respect. What I loved most is Keira’s unwavering belief in Dean’s goodness—her capacity to see through his layers and beyond his scars, challenging and pushing him toward the redemption he so desperately needs.
I absolutely loved this book and the conclusion to Last Refuge Protectors. It's very enjoyable, well-written, emotion charged, and developed. With harrowing twists and turns, romantic moments, and a character-driven storyline, this book offers everything a military romantic suspense reader could hope for.
“One Last Shot” is the sixth and last book in the “Last Refuge Protectors Series.” Dean "Bullseye" Reynolds is a former marine assassin, now a bartender during summer months and ski instructor during the winter months. Dean is haunted by his past and does not believe that he deserves to be happy. As a reminder of the shot he could not take, he wears a bullet on a pendant. “A reminder that always calmed me when I thought about those days.”
Keira Marsh is a deputy with the local Hart County Police Force. Keira’s ultimate goal is to join and become a Last Refuge Protector. Working hard towards achieving her goal, Kiera is strong and capable, but also a soft side that people can relate to. “Keira might not have been very large in size, but she had a personality that took up space. Not because she was loud or boisterous. But because of her constant regard for other people. The light she brought to any room she was in.”Her and Dean are best friends, but secretly she is in love with him. Dean is aware of how she feels but refuses to acknowledge her feelings towards him. Then he rips her heart out by advising her that “I’m leaving Colorado. I got an instructor job for the winter at a resort in Canada. Banff….As if wanting someone badly enough could make them want you back.”
Two years latter he is back after Owen, Hart County Sheriff, good friend and fellow marine, advises him that Kiera has been attacked and in hospital recovering. He finds the first flight that takes him back to Colorado, back to Kiera. She looks up from the hospital bed….he is standing there. “Two years. Two years, and he’d just walked in like it was normal. Like it was nothing. Like he was still my friend.” She is angry at him and kicks him out! “Get out of here. Go. That’s what you’re good at.” She breaks down…. even though all she ever wanted was to have him close. To have him want her.
“She wasn’t the same after you left. If you show up like this when she’s already been through it and then take off again, how do you think that’s going to go?” Could he wash away the sins of the past enough to deserve Kiera’s love or can he only offer her vengeance….When he admits that he misses her and is sorry, she lets him in! The stone wall around her heart starts to crumble….he opens up to her, to explain why he is the way that he is. How he was recruited to do ghost ops, the reason why he does not touch guns anymore. It’s his penance in life!
Dean agrees to let Kiera help him to find the people that tried to kill her. Investigating. Tracking them down. Punishing them. Between them nearly being run off the road and her house being broken into, they make the decision for her to move into Dean’s house as very few people know about it. “My lips brushed against Keira’s the way I’d imagined so many times. She made a tiny sound, a whimper, tilting her head. Which just made me press closer. My hand cupped her cheek as the bow of her upper lip fit perfectly against my lower one. I knew exactly what I was doing. Knew she couldn’t shove me away, in case someone was watching.” The cover to everyone is that they are dating….”Our excuse for you moving in with me. I’m worried about your safety, so I’m insisting, as your boyfriend, that you live with me.”
A thoroughly enjoyable read from one chapter to the next - at times you are metaphorical “on the edge of your chair” wondering what will happen next. You will fall in love with Dean and Kiera, hoping that everything with work out for them and if they have a future together. The more time they spend together, the sexual tension between them only gets stronger - it is HOT! Dean is an ex Marine sniper that is use to controlling his emotions, but around Kiera…. Will he finally let the barriers down, let go of the past and realise that he is worthy of being loved and have a future! To be quite honest, you will not be able to put this book down. Overall, I would highly recommend this book and you will not be disappointed 😊
Finally! After several-book hiatus that took us to the neighboring town of Silver Ridge, we finally get Dean and Keira's story. One thing to know about Hannah Shield's books is that they all are interconnected in some way, even if they can each be read as a standalone. For this story, I felt the need to go back and reread the first five books in the Last Refuge Protectors series before cracking the [digital] cover on this one. Fortunately, I'm a speedy reader
So what did I think? I truly wanted a five-star experience, but it didn't quite reach those lofty heights for me. I'm not entirely sure why? It was written as beautifully as I've come to expect from Ms. Shield, but I struggled to find the intense amount of chemistry present in most of her other novels. Maybe too many tropes at play? Friends-to-lovers, second chances, romantic suspense, redemption, vengeance, not-good enough are some that come to mind.
Overall, I think the outcomes expected, aside from an HEA, were Dean being at peace with his gritty past and Keira earning a spot as a Protector. I'm not into writing spoilers, but if you know a Shield story, you can pretty much guess. And that's okay! As for me though, to be okay with Dean's gritty past, I had to suspend my disbelief and just make myself be okay with it (i.e., not think about it through the lens of real life). And that's possibly unfair since all of Shield's heroes and several of her heroines had gritty moments of their own, and I was okay with it.
Could I be more oblique? Sorry. Avoiding spoilers is challenging.
As for Keira, I'm glad she got another two years of seasoning before we got to her story because I think it was necessary. She's a great heroine, both tough and gentle. But while I liked her and Dean together, the chemistry wasn't fully developed for me. It wasn't absent, but it wasn't fully up to snuff. And while she's definitely a great deputy and pretty good at the rogue stuff, I don't fully see her as a Protector. I think she needed to lead the charge a little bit more than she did in this book.
But even my least favorite of Shield's books is head and shoulders above my favorites of other writers. I'm glad we had the opportunity to get this couple's story even if it took a while for it to come to fruition. It's worth a read. The whole series is worth a read.
I received an ARC of this book for free from the author and BookSirens. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion.
“I wish I could’ve had everything with you. Every single thing. If I could’ve stayed forever for anyone, it would’ve been you.”
Former Marine Dean "Bullseye" Reynolds lived his life as a wanderer, a bartender during summer and ski instructor in winter. Haunted by his past as a highly skilled sniper and assassin, he never stayed anywhere too long. Two years after leaving Hart County, he returned, coming for vengeance against the men who hurt deputy sheriff Keira Marsh, his friend and the woman he had always loved. If you want to visualize Dean's character, I cannot imagine a better cover model.
Dean couldn't accept his past, the mission that had gone wrong, the one that made him leave that life behind and a reminder of which he wore a rifle round pendant. He had always loved Keira but never felt like he deserved her so he kept her at a distance. It broke my heart to see how unworthy he felt, how he doubted being a good man. But I loved seeing him find his redemption, earning back Keira's friendship, plus the groveling was top notch. Their mutual longing was so palpable and I wanted nothing more than to see them find their way to each other through all the obstacles they encountered.
Keira wanted to join the Last Refuge Protectors but always felt the need to prove herself. I loved how independent and determined she was, never giving up on what she wanted, both the Protectors and Dean. I also loved how she wasn't afraid to speak her mind and how she stood up for herself unapologetically.
Dean and Keira's romance was perfectly imperfect with a connection that was raw and intimate and had so much depth of emotion. More than a story of revenge, it was a story of love and forgiveness, of loving someone completely, all the broken parts, all the scars and imperfections. It was about facing the monsters inside ourselves, accepting and letting go of the past to move on to a future of possibilities.
One Last Shot is the sixth and final book of the Last Refuge Protectors but it's the first I've read of this series. After becoming familiar with the characters, I'm now interested in reading their stories as well. And I loved how this book had tie-ins to the Hart County series too.

*Special thanks to author Hannah Shield for the ARC!
One Last Shot is the last book in this super series and while it can be read as a standalone, you'd miss out if not reading the previous books. Here we finally get Dean and Keira's story.
Dean's a former sniper with a haunted, mysterious past. He's a wanderer, never wanting to stay too long in one place, earning his living as a ski instructor during Winter and as a bartender in the summertime. For the last two years he's been staying in Hart County which is longer than he's used too already and one of the reasons is his friendship with Keira, the town's sheriff deputy. In fact his feelings for her run a lot deeper than friendship but because of his past he feels he's not worthy enough to deserve her love so he leaves after he finds out she feels the same.
Fast forward two years... When Dean finds out Keira's been seriously injured in an attack, he drops everything and returns to protect her and find out who's been targeting her. Needless to say he's also got some groveling to do.
Keira's a strong character, she's set her mind on joining the Protectors and will do anything to achieve her goal. I loved how she wasn't just simply going to let Dean back into her life without explanation but still respected he needed time. There's a lot of push and pull between them, but when they finally do open up completely to each other, they were a perfect match.
One Last Shot was a great story but it wasn't my favorite of the series. While the action was top notch, I couldn't really connect with the main characters. I can't really explain why but that doesn't mean I didn't like the book. It's personnal preference methinks.
All in all I'll be sad to see the men and woman of Hart County go, but I'm sure Hannah's already got another book lined up for us.
*ARC kindly received from the author via Booksirens. I'm leaving a voluntary honest review.*
This book is hands down the best in the series and a very deserving conclusion. Usually, the final book in a series relies heavily on the buildup from earlier installments, with the chemistry between the two main characters developed little by little over time. Surprisingly, this book doesn’t depend on that. The chemistry between the leads seems to come out of nowhere, yet it still makes perfect sense and feels completely earned.
We have Dean, whom we know from previous books as a former military man turned bartender. He’s always been restless, never staying in one place for long. On the other side, we have a true heroine: Keira, a young, honest, and reliable cop. The previous books have shown just how trustworthy and strong she is. The two have had chemistry for years—Keira even made the first move once—but Dean rejected her. She believed it was because he didn’t feel the same way, but she couldn’t have been more wrong. It wasn’t about her; it was about him.
Afraid of his feelings and overwhelmed by the possibilities, Dean ran—just as he always does—for two years, moving from place to place. But when Keira is shot, he drops everything to be by her side.
What I truly loved about Keira is that she doesn’t fall easily for Dean’s charm. She’s angry, rightfully so, and she pushes him away. It was refreshing to see a heroine with a backbone. Even when Dean makes a grand gesture—awkward but genuinely sweet because he’s trying his best—Keira doesn’t go easy on him. It takes a long time before they even end up in bed, and as a bonus, the book isn’t overloaded with sex scenes.
Overall, this was a deeply satisfying and well-earned ending to the series.
If you love an action-packed romance with heart, tension, and undeniable chemistry, One Last Shot absolutely delivers. This book gave me everything I could want and more.
Keira and Dean start as longtime friends, but layered beneath that friendship is a love they’ve both been quietly carrying for years. I really appreciated that Keira takes the first step early on and admits her feelings—there was something so refreshing and brave about that. Dean, on the other hand, is wrestling with the heavy weight of his past military service and the belief that he doesn’t deserve the kind of love Keira offers.
When circumstances force Dean back home, Keira puts her foot down and tells him to stay away, which only heightens the tension. From there, the story slides perfectly into a fake dating scenario that brings them back into close proximity—layered with suspense, action, and plenty of high-stakes moments. And let’s talk about the female badassery, because Keira as a sheriff’s deputy was everything. She’s strong, capable, and fearless, but she also has a softness that makes her feel incredibly real and relatable. I loved watching Dean slowly come to terms with the idea that he deserves more—that he deserves her!
Keira and Dean together are absolute perfection, and One Last Shot is a fantastic blend of romance, action, and heartfelt character development. Hannah Shields nailed it, and I’ll absolutely be picking up more from her in the future!!
Once again this author has given her readers a story that intrigues as well as touches the heart. Dean and Kiera are fascinating, strong and multi-layered characters that you just want to know more about. Both have feelings for the other that go well beyond friendship, but are hesitant to act on them. Dean’s past as a sniper weighs heavily on him and he believes he is not worthy of love, especially Kiera’s, a deputy who serves her community with honour. His wandering lifestyle since leaving the military has been a way for him to avoid making emotional connections to others. Still, he cannot force himself to sever his connection with Kiera, a woman his heart says is soulmate, even when his head and conscience are telling him to leave her alone. When she is hurt, Dean can’t hold himself back from finding the culprit and seeking vengeance.
Kiera is strong, goal oriented person with a fiercely loyal heart and desire to serve and protect others. She is not afraid to put her heart on the line and Dean’s mysterious and darker past doesn’t shake her belief that he is worthy of her love. It takes a bit for her to get him to believe it too. He helps her find the person behind her shooting and they find a way forward together, with a great bunch of friends and family close by to support them.
This book is a great addition to the series. I am happy to recommend it and the series.
Whew! This book was so good. Hannah Shield has become a favorite author of mine, and her latest, “One Last Shot,” just proves how brilliant she is at romantic suspense.
Dean and Kiera have known one another for years, but Dean has a past that keeps him from a future. His time in the military as a sniper has given him many emotional scars, and he’s convinced himself he’s not worthy of someone like Kiera. Keira, meanwhile, has been harboring a secret love for the guy who comes and goes in her life.
The two of them have a lot to deal with, but Dean’s protective instincts kicking in over Keira’s safety really push him to start re-rethinking his beliefs. He is such a great guy, and it breaks your heart to see him living such a solitary life. Watching him realize what Keira really means to him is so rewarding.
And I loved Keira. She’s a woman in a man’s world, but she never lets that compromise who she is. And the way she loves Dean and gives him the strength he needs to move forward is everything.
This book had everything I love: romance, suspense, action. And it was all tied together with multi-dimensional characters and a story that kept me turning the pages. I highly recommend this one. And I recommend checking out more from this very talented author, too.

An absolutely thrilling romantic suspense from the first page to the thrilling end. Deputy Keira Marsh is hoping for a chance to not only assist the Last Refuge Protectors, as she has in the past, but to become a participating member. When her love for Dean Reynolds was not returned, and after he left town, she blocked his messages. It was time to move on. When she is attacked in her home, she finds herself on leave until her wounds heal. Dean had left Keira as he believed that the missions he performed in the military made him unacceptable as someone she could love. His nickname “Bullseye” said it all. He had served on missions, doing what was ordered until he no longer could justify what was asked of him. Returning to town when he learns that Keira had been injured, he needs to step in and protect her, if only she will let him. Keira has other plans that involve her helping him find the ones who attacked her. Could the wealthy man, who she had warned earlier that day, taken revenge against her? Dean will not rest until he finds those involved. As danger follows their search, will they ever find the masked men who broke into her home? Is there now a chance for a future for them? This was my favorite title in this series. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
This small-town friends-to-lovers romance blends a revenge story with themes of friendship, self-worth, and second chances. The male main character believes he’s not good enough for the woman he loves, which leads him to live as a wanderer for years. When he’s nearly killed, he returns home—not just to recover, but also to confront the past and seek revenge. The core idea of the plot is interesting and a bit different, especially the mix of long-standing friendship, unresolved feelings, and a revenge arc. The book is marketed as an action-romance, and while there is action, it sometimes feels muted and doesn’t always deliver the intensity you might expect from that label. Although the story is meant to work as a standalone, there are frequent references to events and relationships from earlier books in the series. It’s still possible to follow the plot without having read them, but those callbacks can make you feel a bit like an outsider stepping into an already established friend group. Overall, this is a solid story about revenge, loyalty, and enduring friendship, with a slow-burn romantic element. It’s an enjoyable read, even if some aspects—especially the action and series connections—don’t fully land.

Two years since he'd left. Yet here she was still struggling to move past him. What's she doing even thinking that they were never anything more than friends. Being a deputy was a distraction to help keep her mind busy. It wasn't working. Kiera was still hoping that the Last Refuge Protectors would add her to their ranks. Dean was reaching the time to move on again, leaving for who knows where. The one place and person he longed for were not on the cards. Until he found out she'd been shot. Now he's on a flight back, he do whatever he could to get revenge for her. Then he'd leave again. He had too. This is the last in the series and WOW what a gripping story. The chemistry and dynamic between the pair is so obvious to everybody except them. Can Dean really protect her. Will they even find out why someone was targeting her. Is it to late for romance. Will hidden secrets be the thing that finally finishes not only their friendship but any hopes of romance. I couldn't put this book down and must say I haven't read the previous books (which I will be reading now), so this can be read as a standalone. This is a definite for any tbr list. I will say the spicy is perfect to get you a little hot under the collar.
The end of this series is finally here! Then he hears Deputy Keira Marsh was almost killed, and those masked thugs think they got away with it. Now, Dean’s going back to Hart County to make things right. He'll keep Keira safe with his life, even if she's too pure for his damaged heart. And he'll hunt them down. Even if it means breaking his vow. In this Friends to lover’s romance, we can find everything we love: Small town vibes, fake relationship, a bit of action & suspense, slow-burn spice and a heartfelt HEA. I think that it’s my least favorite from the series because I couldn’t really connect with the main characters, but I’ve read all this author’s books and I highly recommend all of them. They are well written and totally addictive. Dean is HOT and Keira waited long enough for him. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
What a way to end a series! All the steam, passion, and intrigue a reader could want I have read all the books in the “Last Refuge Protectors” series and the newer series of Hart County. If you like your male leads manly and alpha plus a strong woman they desire, you will want to read any book of either series. Sadly, this is the last book but Ms. Shield is sending this series off with a bang, quite literally. Keira Marsh is a 28yo Deputy in the Sheriff’s Department of Hartley, Colorado. But two years ago, her best friend and love interest left; Dean Reynolds broke her heart. Present day and someone tried to kill Keira; 36yo Dean is back to make sure she is well and kill the SOB who did this to her. You see, Dean harbors affection for Keira but because of his past as a clandestine assassin for the government, he does not feel worthy of her. Can Dean and Keira figure out why Keira was targeted in time? Will this event show Dean that a relationship with Keira is possible and worthwhile? I loved these characters. I read this book in little more than a day which is fast for me. I could not or should I say would not put it down until I was finished. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through BookSirens.
Never been happier to be home and ill with the flu. Spent all day reading this book and it did not disappoint.
Having read all of Hannah’s books, this is one that I have been waiting for. Reading bits of their relationship in other books has been tempting. I was stunned to read that Hannah almost didn’t write this one, and relieved to see she did. A great story, and one that I needed to read.
Dean and Kiera’s chemistry is obvious from the snippets you see in the other books. Along with Deans obvious demons.
I did not expect the book to start with Kiera almost getting killed but then that set the tone for the rest of the book.
The plot was a little different from the previous books, but that made it great. I had a feeling Garrett had something to do with Hadley when it was mentioned earlier in the book. But seeing where the story went was great.
The hotness was just perfect, and Kiera getting just what she needed from Dean in the end was perfect 🤩
Glad to see that Kiera became a Protector eventually. And that she and Dean got their happy ending.
Thank you Hannah for allowing me to read this story early. Forever grateful. Can’t wait for the next book 😍

Action and spine-tingling suspense make this a definite read.
Dean has never been the staying type — yet after two years away from Hart County, he still can’t get Kiera out of his mind. When he left, he knew things between them were getting too serious, and he convinced himself he shouldn’t stay. But when Kiera, now a sheriff’s deputy, is injured, Dean comes racing back to protect her and uncover who’s targeting her.
Hannah Shield created a story that is nonstop action… thrilling, suspenseful, and deeply emotional. Her characters are relatable and easy to root for. Dean, with his military background and the nickname “Bullseye,” wears a single rifle round around his neck, adding to his quiet mystery. He’s determined not to leave until he finds the truth and keeps Kiera safe.
Kiera is a tough, bad@ss heroine who refuses to sit back and let anyone rescue her. I loved the push-and-pull between her and Dean — they challenge each other, complement each other, and feel like the perfect match. And when they finally open up and share their truths, I absolutely melted. Their vulnerability made the romance hit even harder. I love Hart County, and I’m sad this is the final book in the series — but what an exciting and emotional way to wrap it up.
I loved this book so much! I’m familiar with Hannah Shield’s writing, but I had never read any of the books in the Last Refuge series. Now I want to go back and read them all. If you haven’t read the series either, no worries—you can absolutely enjoy One Last Shot as a standalone. I really loved Dean and Keira’s characters. He’s an ex–military man who works as a bartender in the summers and a ski instructor in the winters. He doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long or form lasting attachments because he feels undeserving. Keira has loved Dean for a long time, and when he left town two years ago, she was heartbroken. Now Dean is back and wants to help Keira find the people who hurt her.
The way these two characters grow, support one another, build trust, and eventually realize they are deserving of each other is so beautiful. I particularly enjoyed that they didn’t jump into bed right away; instead, some time passed before they became intimate— and when it finally happened… fireworks!
The plot is really interesting, and it kept me guessing until the end. I truly enjoyed this book.
A gripping storyline to finish this entertaining series.
I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series. While there is always a couple central to the story – this time Dean and Keira – there’s a strong thriller plot line and in this case, Keira gets shot by masked intruders early in the book kicking off a series of events that make this a gripping read that will keep you entertained right up until you think it’s drifting slowly to its conclusion, only for a major twist that’ll shock you, and ramp up the action another notch! While all this is happening, Ms. Shield weaves Dean and Keira’s love story into the action. He has a past he hasn’t reconciled with believing he’s not worthy of Kiera’s love, so he up and leaves at the start of this book only for her shooting to bring him back seeking vengeance. Coming to terms with who he used to be, while their love grows, is a great story arc. I thought this was a fabulous read, a fitting end to the series, and I highly recommend it. 5th January 2026
Reynolds is a broken lost soul. He's like a ghost flitting from one temporary job to another all over the world, but never settles and never really engages with anyone more than doing his job, due to his traumatic past. He continued in his nomadic ways even when meeting and forming a strong bond with Kiera at Last Refuge. They are like Twin Souls but only Keira wants to take their friendship further. Reynold's thinks Keira will have a better life without him and leaves her behind, fully knowing that his heart will always be with her. When Keira almost loses her life due to a sinister assassination attempt, he puts his PTSD aside and falls back on his Military training to take revenge. But Kiera won't let him return back to the cold hearted killer he once was.
Reynolds nearly lost Keira forever. Now that she's back in his life, he has to face the fact that as broken as he is, he never wants to leave her ever again.

I was really excited to see that Keira was getting a book and that she would be paired up with Dean. Yes! Yes! Yes!
Starting it, I immediately got leary. Our couple go on a hiatus for 2 years while Dean has to sort himself out. I really dislike the 'for your own good' motivation, but a tortured man inching forward is better than nothing.
Keira is an amazingly strong character. She gets the short end of the stick a few times from Owen, Dean and the Protectors at Last Refuge. But she doesn't give up, even when I would have washed my hands in frustration.
When Dean finally returns after an off-duty incident injures Keira, I was very very pleased with how she made him work for it. She showed a lot of self-respect not folding immediately. Once things truely heat up, I was happy with the pacing. I am sad to see this couple go, but look forward to other series by this author.

I love all of Hannah Shield's books, they are romantic suspense but the suspense elements could be the book all by itself. The characters of this book, Keira and Dean, we have met before in the Last Refuge Protectors series.
Keira has wanted Dean for years but after he walked away 2 years ago, without bothering to keep in touch, she's done with him.
Dean fell into the trap of thinking he 'knows what's best', and upon his return he is reminded exactly how Keira feels about that.
Keira is a kick ass character, was so glad that she didn't just jump into his arms. Dean was a little irritating with his whole 'deserving better' stance, but he eventually gets out of his own way.
Can they figure out who is after Keira, keep themselves safe and protect their hearts?
4⭐ - just because I wanted to shake Dean at times.
Can't wait to read what Ms Shields produces next.

One Last Shot The Last Refuge Protectors Book 6 Hannah Shield
Dean and Keira Dean and Keira have been friends for years, good friends. But Dean never stays in one place too long. It crushed Keira when Dean left. Well, something most don’t know, is how much Keira loved Dean. He’s been gone for years and she still hasn’t gotten over him. She knows she needs to move on but she just can’t.
Dean’s winter job is ending and he needs to decide where to go next. He always thinks about Keira but he can’t go back. It’s torture. But then he receives a phone call from his friend Owen that will change everything. Looks like he's going back after all.
The Last Refuge Protectors series have all been great reads!! I don’t like that it has come to an end but all six books have been loads of fun to read. Filled with action, some suspense, protective men, and romance, all have been thrilling. Great book. Great series!
Dean, a former Marine sniper, had not touched a gun since leaving the off-grid work that hadn’t gone well, and felt that deep down he was just not good enough for Keira. Despite this his character did come across as honourable and steady with a determination to protect Keira. Two years ago he left the town and Keira behind and practically ghosted her only returning when he heard she’d been shot. Dean carried a lot of baggage with him and though he explained some of his issues there was definitely more to come which was explained as their story unfolded. The suspense behind who was wanting Keira dead, added to the emotional relationship that she and Dean were working through kept the story interesting from start to finish. With strong, admirable characters in both Dean and Keira it was a relief to get their HEA. I can definitely recommend this book.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy. Returning to Hart County for the final book brings us to Deputy Keira Marsh and Dean “Bullseye” Reynolds. These two have been best friends for years, quietly carrying feelings they’ve never dared to voice. When Dean left town, he took Keira’s heart with him—though he’s convinced his military past means he doesn’t deserve happiness.
After Keira is injured on the job, Dean rushes home to protect the only woman he’s ever loved. Keira, however, wants nothing to do with his sudden need to play guardian. Both are strong, stubborn, and clearly in love, but fear keeps them circling each other instead of taking the leap.
The tension, the loyalty, the history—they all build toward one question: will Dean and Keira finally admit what they mean to each other, or will they walk away once the danger has passed?.

Wandering ex-Marine sniper Dean "Bullseye" Reynolds returns to Hart County after two years, driven by vengeance against the men who hurt deputy sheriff Keira Marsh—the woman he's always loved but never felt worthy of. Haunted by a failed mission (symbolized by his rifle round pendant), he keeps people at arm's length, doubting he's a good man. Keira is fiercely independent, determined to prove herself for the Last Refuge Protectors while never giving up on Dean. Their raw, deep connection shines through mutual longing, top-tier groveling, redemption, and unapologetic honesty. More than revenge, this is a beautiful story of love, forgiveness, accepting scars, and facing inner monsters to build a future together. Emotional, imperfect, and intensely romantic—loved every page! It's the series finale but my first read; now I'm hooked and want the rest (plus Hart County ties).

I was given the chance to read this book early as an ARC! Thank you to Hannah Shields and team for the opportunity.
This book was an absolute delight to read! The characters were well thought out and very relatable. I loved the mystery thrown in, and it had turns I definitely didn’t see coming.
I really love that it’s an interconnected standalone. You don’t need to read the rest of the series to keep up, but I can attest to the fact that I WANT to know the rest of the players after reading this one!
The love between Kiera and Dean was a testament to longevity. The feelings they both struggled with was something everyone can relate to. I loved the internal struggles they both fought with when it came to feeling inadequate and coming out stronger together.
Overall definitely something I’d recommend for the girls who love action packed into a love story.
