Jude and Kate fight foreign invaders who kidnapped the Rebel president. But the foreign forces occupying the West Coast are elite naval infantry and don't make it easy. Rebel casualties mount, Jude's friend among them. Jude is asked to come to the rescue. He has bloodied the Provos and the Militia on the East Coast. And now the killing machine brings his deadly wrath upon the elite Chinese Marines around Denver, Pueblo and Durango, Colorado. Medal of Honor winner USMC Gunny Teeb Alvarez joins the former US Army Ranger. The Chinese Marines holding Baker have NO idea of what's about to hit them! Jude is enraged when he hears that Kate may have been kidnapped or killed. His heart rejects the thought that another woman could replace Angie; but the fiery redhead disturbs his every consciousness. Meanwhile, Ed Sumter's Appalachian Command has the dictator and his cronies between a rock and a hard place. Greco's Provos kill someone really important to Jude. The fast breaking, heart-stopping action continues!!
Excellent! The series continues to be thought-provoking. It will stay with you long after you are done. The United States is still split in a modern civil war, with China holding the West Coast after an unprovoked attack taking advantage of the country suffering a loss of all civilian control due to an overwhelming terrorist attack on the government.
Texas has tried to stay neutral in the civil war but is drawn into taking sides by the Chinese.
The book is full of action, combat missions, trying to save the new president and with traitors stirring the pot. I can see the turmoil many professional military people would have, you want to fight and defend your country and constitution. But first, each solider must make a personal decision of what the legitimate government is.
In some ways, it reminds me of the movie/book Crimson Tide. All patriots, all professional military men, willing to possibly kill each other because of unclear orders to follow. Each feeling they are right.
Great job Dan, can't wait to start book three in the series. Strongly recommend.
Review by Mike Slavin author of award-winning Kill Crime (action-packed thriller on Amazon to buy or KU)
Who better to write a novel about a military and diplomatic catastrophe than Dan Santos, a man who has "been there and done that." He's a former American diplomat and US Army infantry officer who, no doubt, writes military novels with the skill and familiarity of one who has served and seen the worst of human tendencies. I thoroughly enjoyed his first novel, "Appalachian Command," and was blown away by this second novel, which takes place around Denver, Colorado. I won't go into the plot, other than to say the U.S. has become a military dictatorship and a Rebel Interim President is appointed. When you mix Al Qaeda, Chinese Marines, elite Israeli forces, and rebel American freedom fighters in a novel, the situation is explosive. Aside from being an apocalyptically plausible novel, I must say the action scenes in "Insurrection: Mile-High Blood" are among the very best I've ever read. Dan Santos may very well write some of the best military (exquisitely detailed) action scenes on the planet. The book is un-put-downable, and I was up and wide-awake until three in the morning, refusing to go to bed until I finished it. If you're the kind of person who must get to bed early and need a full eight hours of sleep, don't begin this novel anytime in the evening. Your sleep schedule will be impaired by the adrenaline-juiced action and non-stop tension with which this novel brims. All I can say is Dan Santos brings his military expertise to this novel in a way that makes for heart-thumping reading and novelistic realism that matches and often exceeds that of the best military novels ever written: whether it's Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead" or Tim O'Brian's "Lake in the Woods" it doesn't get any better than this. A must-read for anyone who follows the world's news or for the reader who enjoys military detail, action, and the foibles of the human condition. Five incredibly well-deserved stars. Kudos, kudos, kudos.
After reading the three books of the “Insurrection” series by Dan Santos, I have arrived at a personal decision. If and when, our nation is ever overrun by a foreign power, or falls from an internal conspiracy, whereby democracy is threatened, I want to be standing beside Dan. This review is mostly about book two, or “Mile High Blood”. As Dan, so intelligently place out nation's interim capitol at the foot of the Rockies, near Denver, Colorado, in its eastern suburb of Aurora, I thought, good idea. I lived in Colorado from 1976 to 1992 and spent my summers there from about 1996 to 2013. I have had the pleasure of seeing almost every square foot of it from the “mile High” itself, to the windblown high valleys of 10,000 feet to the tops of the continental divide. It would be a place more easily defended, as well as one heavy on resources. “Mile High Blood” is a story filled with dedicated servicemen and women, willing to go that extra mile and give their all, and in this story, many of them made that ultimate sacrifice. The story is full of the realism of military minds, of tough as nails old-timers, who speak softly and carry a big stick to hot-blooded youngsters anxious to get in harm's way. It has special ops, and spooks and ghosts. It has “seat of the pants” pilots willing to fly into the depths of hell to save lives or see that a mission is completed. Many of those same servicemen and women had been touched by a traitor's greed and lust for power, by losing families and loved ones, so they would step aside from their rolls for a brief moment, and piece their broken hearts together and tape it in place and don their gear, fill their clips, sharpen their knives, and go forward with a heart full of memories and a head full of vengeance. I was extremely impressed with the strategy displayed in planning tactical maneuvers. I was amazed at the knowledge displayed of techniques of hand-to-hand combat. I marveled at the knowledge of weaponry, and military equipment. But I wasn’t shocked by the hearts and souls of our nation's heroes, their stories echo in the words written by Dan. This book is one of those that gets away from you, in time allowed to read, minutes stretch into hours, and when you read as I do, in the late hours of the evening, you find that evening becoming morning. That is Ok too, for your mind is full of concern that one of your heroes, might stand in harm's way, you don’t want to leave he or she behind. Dan thanks for placing this particular mission in my old stomping grounds, I recognized every rock and tree and street corner, it was invigorating. I hope youngsters who might be consider making the military career would consider reading this and both other books of the Insurrection series, “Appalachian command”, got my attention, and whetted my appetite, “Mile High Blood” made me fear for my country, and for democracy, “Tiger Legion” made me aware of what the costs of sleeping our way into a situation, such as this insurrection could be. We don’t ever want to allow ourselves in that position. Thank you, Dan Santos,
Dan Santos continues his thrilling and imaginative story of American defeat and resurgence in a gripping tale of betrayal and determination in the face of overwhelming odds. His own personal military background brings total credibility to his characters’ military exploits as rebel American patriots fight the American dictatorship that has taken over Washington and the Chinese invaders who control the West coast of the U.S. A can’t miss edge of your seat thriller. Can’t wait for the movie!
