In the Unbreaking

Rate this book
CHAOS IS SPREADING.

Gabriel and the rest of Squad 36 have struggled to defend the abandoned civilians of Region 520 from the remnants of a murderous gang. After months of bloodshed, the fighting becomes a deadly stalemate, and everyone is feeling the strain-particularly Gabriel, whose power is kept in constant demand.

Between sleepless nights, harried days, and devastating revelations, the team is stretched thin. When new adversaries threaten the valley, Squad 36 must settle their differences with the gang or face enemies on two fronts. If they fail, something worse than the xeno occupation will be unleashed on the world and leave no one safe.

Not even those who swore to defend it.

Brigitte Cromey has been known to daydream so heavily that a gong must be rung to retrieve her. (This annoys her family, who can never be sure if she’s actually heard what they’ve just said to her.)

When not submerged in worlds of her own making, she can be found cooking with bizarre ingredients, reading entire books in a single sitting, dressing her children up as fairies and knights, and occasionally responding to the world with kindness tainted by cynicism.

Brigitte lives in Southern Arizona with her husband and children. Should you encounter her, the kettle will always be on.

I never know what to say when it's time to review my own books. (And you'd better believe I'm reviewing them...I read them enough times!) It's even trickier when I've had mixed feelings about this book for so many years.

See, this is the one that sat in stasis while I grappled with loss after loss, hard season after harder season. It was stamped early in its life with grief, and that invisible imprint remains even after things changed. Like a echoed memory, the shadows of the past cling to the present.

But for all the hard times this story represents, it's also the one that shines so bright to me. Because this book...this is the one where we pick ourselves up, wipe the blood from still-bleeding wounds, and press on. This is the one where we fall into the arms of those who love us, unashamed of the messy tears. This is the one claimed by darkness but redeemed by hope. This is the lifeline, thrown to the past and guiding into the future.

Oh yes, and it's also scrappy family, a fight to defend a broken but beautiful city, redemption for enemies, enough action to stop your heart, and gentle moments that might heal it.

I'll leave you with the dedication. To those who’ve found themselves in hard season after hard season, but continue to fight hard and hold fast... May dawn break soon.

*Takes a deep breath*

I AM NOT OKAY. THERE WAS SOMETHING CALLED SLEEP I NEEDED, AND INSTEAD I WAS PANICKING OVER THESE PRECIOUS CHARACTERS.

This book was a wild ride. There were some parts I could barely contain my happiness (The river scene, anyone?? The Rapunzel movie night? The sassy Grandma whacking one of the Blood Angels with a sandal? MAWWIAGE???) but there were also parts I. Needed. To. Scream.

So.

Plot wise, it definitely ramped up. Book one was a lot of calm parts mixed with action, which I enjoyed a ton, and this was a lot of action mixed with calm. Still awesome though.

The characters, once again, were amazing. Bandit and Josephine were so fun to watch together. Tara and Caleb… agh I love those two so much. I LOVED we got more time with them this book. And how they and Gabriel boost each other’s power??? #Ilovethesecharacterstoomuch. We got to see another layer of Deadeye’s engineering side, though sometimes she felt a little too into her project, and I didn’t enjoy her swearing more.

Getting this out now, my biggest problem with the book was the swearing was more. I wasn’t expecting it and it just threw me off. I would love having a littleeee less.

Anyway, now that that’s aside…

Gaberiel has grown and gone through so much. He’s so tired. And Judge’s death still hurts. I almost cried when he was wearing the duck tshirt. But he keeps getting back up to fight. He’s not helpless anymore, and definitely not worthless. Gabe, when are you going to realize you’re a part of their family? Those crazy people are never going to stop fighting for you.

And he still cares so deeply for others, even those against him. (And I love how that affects lightning girl. Her arc was lovely to see.) I love him… he needs those hugs… and a nap…

Worldbuilding wise, it was fascinating to see more how Shattered powers work and what happened more with the xenos. I like how we’re slowly getting these details

But the cherry on top guys… the theme. I’m a sucker for theme in storytelling. I will admit, it took me a moment to truly see it. I was seeing bits throughout the story—as Gabe felt the weight of death on both sides, as the effort it took to protect others felt spat back in their faces, as everything seemed hopeless and death almost seemed better than living to fight—but it wasn’t until I read the acknowledgments and she said Apollo LTD’s song “Soul Worth Saving” was an inspiration for this book that it truly clicked.

There is pain in this world. There is darkness. It feels useless, hopeless, and too overwhelming to fight sometimes. It preys on your life, inside and out.

But there is light too, shining brighter than all of that. No matter what the darkness says, you are a soul worth saving. There is a second chance for the lost. There is beauty in the brokenness.

Life is oh so precious, and so worth fighting for.

“There’s more to your story than the pain it caused you… May the Lord be a refuge for you when the world grows too loud.”

Ok well this was simply EPIC 🔥

I enjoyed book 1 in The Aftermath, but this one REALLY took everything to the next level: the stakes, the relationships, the powers, the action, the EMOTIONAL DAMAGE. I was on the edge of my seat every single page and couldn't be more satisfied. As a writer myself, I know this sequel wasn't easy to pull off, but, Brigitte, every bit of work and worry and heart you poured into this was worth it. THIS is a 🤌perfect🤌sequel.

I just loved how much deeper some of the characters got this time around. In book one, I was still getting acquainted with everyone, but now they're my family. The depth of their loyalty and love and sacrifice truly sweetens what would otherwise be a very bitter and heartbreaking story.

And that's what I love about Brigitte's writing: the hope laced into the tragedy. There's no doubt that things got worse for this little team of rogue EDF soldiers, but they pulled together, dug deeper, and came out even stronger. I can't wait to see what happens next!

If you're reading this review, you've probably already read book 1, but if not, just know that the super powers and the post-alien invasion world are SICK. It's one of my favorite elements. But despite how cool the Shattereds, and how high intensity the plot and action, the biggest reason to give this series a shot (and then give it your whole heart) is the characters. Seriously, if scrappy found family is your jam, then this book will be a whole jam jar. 💃🫙

So honored and grateful to be on the ARC team for this incredible story and leave my honest opinion to help it find the readers who will fall in love with it. 💛

The approximate range of emotions I went through reading this book: 😊🥹😅😌😱😇🥳🥰😱😱😱🫣☹️😣😖😫😤😭🥺
Twas a taxing experience- *flashbacks to writhing on the floor and screaming*- but well worth it. *repeatedly presses five star button in an effort to give this book 1000 stars*
Anyone who knows me knows how much I loved book one at this point, but I don't think they're ready for how much I loved book two. I adored book one with all my heart, but despite how much agony it caused me... I think book two is even better. The found family is family-ing even harder. The beans are beanier than ever before. The angst... um, the angst is also angsting and IT REALLY HURTS. As a reader, I'm destroyed. As a writer... uh... yeah, I get it. 🙃 I love absolutely EVERYTHING about In The Unbreaking and, as with book one... please read it please read it please read it. And then come find me and tell me allllll about it. :D

I’d give this book more stars if they’d let me. Honestly, it’s probably unwise to write a review fresh off the tail of a mentally and emotionally engrossing story, since it usually results in frantic rants and stilted phrases (like how my review of book 1, The Shattered Ones, turned out to be. . .) But I couldn’t let slide this absolute heart-aching rush that proves, to me, anyway, that a story hit home. If I’m a target, my bull’s eye has been punched clean through.

On the technical side, the action and pace of this book ramped up even from book 1, which already set a high bar, without feeling rushed. It’s gripping in an emotionally throttling kind of way that pulls you in alongside these characters in their battle of attrition and, eventually, a great evil. Was there internal screaming involved from the peanut gallery? You bet there was.

Because technical execution enhances stories, but it’s not what makes them great. Great stories capture your heart, and this one snagged mine utterly. There were a lot of hard things in this book, visceral battles with dark pasts and trauma, hopelessness and helplessness. Those depths, though acknowledged, were not the point. They’re there to prove that the light—the courage, determination, redemption, reconciliation, second chances, unmitigated loyalty, unconditional love—is always, always stronger and that our pain doesn’t have to define us.

There is heart in these words, undeniably so. Beating, bleeding, and loving in every line, page, and chapter from first to last, and I, for one, feel more encouraged for it.

Does that mean I’m not equal parts excited and terrified (terri-cited I think I once called this feeling) about what’ll go down in book 3? Nope. But I’m here for it. Undomesticated equine couldn’t keep me away.

Being a reader is funny because I can be dealing with literally anything from friendship drama to burnout to stress to sleep deprivation, and at any point during all that, I can flip open a book, find the main character going trough it with we-might-all-die stuff. Because of the skill of this author, I can feel the character's emotion and conflict immediately upon glancing at the page, and as he descends into an existential crisis, I whisper "Same."

I mean, I'm a college student. I may be stressed, but my experience is NOTHING LIKE what he's going through, AND YET, I so so SO relate.

That's the power of a book written by a good author.

And to be honest, even with the skill Brigitte Cromey possesses, I didn't think I would get through this before finals were over because of time limitations. I stuck with just a few pages at a time until... well... until that midpoint "Ohhhhh no" happened.

I could see and hear it all. I was so gripped by this book that I even began to get cold when one of the characters did.

Needless to say, I did not go to bed on time that night.

The book is now finished. Theories have been discussed among my friends. Fangirling did ensue.

-----------------------------------
-----Now about content
-----------------------------------

This was super clean.

Just like the last book, there was some blood, some violence.... maybe a little bit MORE violence... more trauma too, but that's what readers like to see, yeah?

There may have been some light cussing, but I don't remember for sure. I was too busy watching what happened.

-----------------------------------
-----How is this in comparison to the last book?
-----------------------------------

AWESOME

It's not a rehash of the same stuff, but it doesn't ignore anything from the first book either. In the Unbreaking builds on The Shattered Ones like two episodes in a TV show.
I don't like when characters magically cope with traumatic stuff within a tiny period of time as if the bad stuff didn't affect them long-term, but this book somehow built not only on the character arcs from book 1, but the trauma, too.

I definitely feel that the author is going somewhere specific with this, and I am excited/terrified to find out what the ending will be, because at this point, I have NO IDEA what's gonna happen.

-----------------------------------
-----Suspension of Disbelief-----
-----------------------------------

So, there was a time or two when I paused to glance back and make sure I read correctly just because I never expected *certain things* in this book to be so very realistic. I could believe that what happens in this book could very much happen in real life if the Xeno invasion happened first.

Unfortunately for our beloved characters, this isn't a Disney type world. The Aftermath is as realistic a series as the author could make it (while including aliens and superpowers, I mean), and I do NOT want any of my poor little characters to get hurt anymore. They need sleep and hugs.... a solid week of world peace would be nice, too...

But I guess we'll have to see what happens.
So what say ye? Will you join us on the second installment of our adventure?

------------------
I was honored to have been given an early copy of this book, but all opinions, rants, and fangirling contained within this review are my own honest opinion.

Warning: the reading of this book may cause the following symptoms. Symptoms may be exacerbated if you are a writer: high-pitched screeching, reader rage, worried pacing, bookish anxiety for characters' lives, and the .

AHJSKLGFHKDGSDHHDSGHKFGKLAJKLS WHY
WHY DO... WHO GAVE THESE CHARACTERS THE RIGHT TO HAVE A HOLD OVER MY EMOTIONAL STATE.
MY BABIES ARE NOT OKAY AND I'M NOT OKAY BECAUSE OF IT WHYYYYY.
As soon as I got the email that the e-arc was available I started reading and voraciously consumed the book in an evening. And there were a lot of people in the room, talking. I didn't hear any of it. I was too concerned.
It was everything I hoped for in the sequel and more *happy sigh*.
I mean we got
-- character experiments
-- NEW characters
-- can I just say I love the name somewhere station
-- they all need naps
-- Gabe is so heartwrenching in thisssss
-- TACO RECIPES
-- Gabe and Bandit and Caleb. The river. You know what I'm talking about. Those three are basically a surrogate dad and two brothers.
-- ]
-- More gangs!
-- sassy grandma ladies
-- more lovely portrayal of PTSD a la Caleb
-- BECAUSE YOU'RE LIGHTNINNGGGGG
-- evil scientist (and not the good kind like Dr. Doofenshmirtz)
-- tRaUmA
-- MoRE trAUmA
-- AND EVEN MORE TRAUMA WHYYYYYY
-- these characters need therapy so badly

So yes, I very very very much enjoyed it (it was a little more episodic and had more language than the last book which slightlyyyy dampened my enjoyment. and I need.... I NEEEDDDD.... I need a paperback. I need my set to be completed.

I also need the finale because MPMMMMHHHHHHH.

(but I mean, it wasn't duology-cliffhanger bad, so props to Brigitte for that).

CONTENT WARNINGS: potentially gross medical descriptions, there IS more swearing in this (like why Gabe, wash your mouth young man), about 7 uses of h*ll, 2 son of a b***h (which I really wasn't expecting, kinda threw me for a loop there, Deadeye), I'm pretty sure there was a use of b*st*rd in there... and at like 5 ot 6 d*mm*t (or other uses of the word). Also the normal gang violence and such.
(I'm actually a tiny disappointed with the swearing in this, last time it felt like very well-placed swearing, as appropriate as you can get for the situations that they're in and considering that they're military, so I, normally a swearing-sensitive person, could sort of justify it in my head? And there's not a LOT of swearing, all things considering, in this book, but I think it felt like a lot more because sometimes it felt very unnecessary and after getting hit with the b-word TWICE I read a lot more tentatively... I trust the author not to get any more intense than that, but I also didn't think she'd use something like SOAB, so.)
Still love this book, and it's still very readable! I'll just probably take a sharpie and edit out the worse swears when I get my paperback.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I need book three.
That’s all.
That’s all the words in the whole universe.
(Okay, maybe I’ll edit this to something more coherent after I have more than three seconds to process. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA)
(It’s good screaming, by the way. I think.)

Aaaaaaaah okay I loved it. Did not disappoint in the slightest. Gabe needs to chill and rest, poor thing. I liked seeing how his power continued to develop… and the things he deduced about Judge’s power were also really cool.
The Thing With Caleb™️ at the end was also really cool. Caleb is so good for Gabe and I love seeing their dynamic and the way they support each other.
I also really enjoyed the addition of Sierra, Santana, and Tía Gloria. It felt like the team had found their place a bit more and were more connected with the community.
And I liked the techy aspects—I feel like I don’t see that in a lot of books I read, but as someone with basic coding and IT knowledge it was fun to see some of that in the book (except when it was used for evil ends. The tech was certainly still cool but sToP tOrTuRiNg ThEm).

Also, I need moreeeeeeeee

[I’m not sure this is how normal people are supposed to write goodreads reviews, but y’know. It’s fine. Everything’s fine. Except that book three isn’t out. So everything is not fine, although I appreciated not being left on a life-or-death cliffhanger.]

Out of all the books I've ever read and all the characters who graced their pages, Gabriel Mendoza might be the character I've related to most. If you're an HSP, Gabe will make you feel seen. If you have a soft heart, thin skin, and the emotions of others bleed into your own, yet you still dare to fight for all things good and true despite what it'll COST you, this book is for you.

But also, it might take you a while to recover from reading this! Book 2 in The Aftermath Trilogy is a lot darker than Book 1. There are intense scenes, including torture, and if you have latent medical fears, it will probably bring them to the surface. And you might not be able to breathe for the second half of the book...and develop a heart condition...

That being said, I adore these characters, their relationships, and their commitment to do what's right no matter the cost. As before, the worldbuilding is immersive, vivid, and feels like home, and the ending is so, so satisfying. (Brigitte, THANK YOU SO MUCH for not ending on a cliffhanger!!)

My favorite quote: "May the Lord be a refuge for you when the world grows too loud.”

In the Unbreaking by Brigitte Cromey (ARC Review)

I read this book in two days. It would’ve taken less time if life hadn’t interrupted, but so it goes. In the Unbreaking is the kind of fast-paced, heartfelt, immersive read that sucks you in and doesn’t let you go, even after you run out of pages.

It’s a high-octane ride, well researched, and deeply human. Moments of peril are cushioned by cozy found family moments, with a leading cast that’s memorable, complex, and delightful. The relationship between Gabriel and Caleb takes a lot of the “screen time” in this installment, and their brotherly bond is deeply moving.

Cromey is clearly in her element, having crafted a wonderful middle book in the Aftermath Trilogy, with strong human connections, fun tech lingo, gripping action, and lush desert settings. I was lucky enough to read the beta version first, and it was enjoyable, but now it’s excellent. That climax though! *chef’s kiss*

Highly recommended for readers who are hungry for a hopeful dystopian/science-fantasy/action series that deals with human scars in the aftermath of an alien invasion. Don’t miss this one!

Content: Peril, action/gang violence, trauma/PTSD, and brief strong language sprinkled throughout.

Disclaimer: I was given an e-arc of this book as a part of the author's street team, but all opinions and reactions are my own.

Aaahhh, Brigitte has done it again! In this second installment of the Aftermath series, we return to Squad 36 and their struggle to protect the land the EDF has written off. I loved the mix of high action and thoughtful character interactions!
Gabe’s growth in this sequel was particularly inspiring to me; I enjoyed watching him grow into his responsibilities and learn to lean on the other members of the squad. That’s perhaps one of my favorite things about this series; the tight community of the squad serves as a wonderful example of what it looks like to love one another. Despite the darkness all around them, together, they’re a light that won’t grow dim.

I can’t wait for book three!

Well DANG
I don't think Brigitte Cromey has ever written a bad book, and this one certainly didn't break that streak
I am. Emotional. This book was gut punches and the brightest possible spots of light, even in dark times. I already want to reread it, even though I just finished it.
Gabriel's arc in this book was just. Wow. Words fail me. In the first book, he goes through a LOT, but he also has a lot of hope. In this book he's worn out—but that hope doesn't go away. Not even after devastating reveals, death and betrayal, and some truly rough last few chapters. The scene in the church was one of my favorites. It just WAS.
Obviously, I adored the little fictional references, and the character moments, and the ROMANCE. The scene where Caleb, Bandit, and Gabriel just took a break to go swim? Incredible.
There were some tough moments in this book but OH the hope woven through it. I basically cried on and off from Stage 17 onward, and there was a moment. In Stage 23. Tears were shed, panic happened, but oh my stars was it beautifully written.
I can't say enough about how much I love these characters—it's impossible to choose a favorite—both new and old. There's just. Redemption and hope and this team NEVER gives up. I adore them, and cannot wait to see what happens next in this series. Also I want to give Gabriel a hug. Minor detail.

Like with The Shattered Ones I really don't think I have the words for this book. It's amazing, and I absolutely loved it!

The characters need hugs, but they have the best dynamics. The way Gabe stayed strong even while wrestling with his feelings was awesome. (And finally, a character who feels guilty when people die! I get so frustrated when character deaths are breezed over as necessary. Life doesn't work that way.)

Also Yes, I could keep ranting about the characters, but really, you just have to read the book! (Especially since I joined a fanclub so I can rant more later XD)

I absolutely loved this book, and I'll be waiting for Hearts Invincible!

I didn't have very high expectations going into Unbreaking. Book 2 of a series/trilogy is notoriously weak, and the best I could hope for was the Further Adventures of Gabriel and Co. But this book surprised me by being GOOD. Gabriel and the team are fighting to save Tucson from the Blood Angels, and both sides are wearing out. Gabriel is so tired that his control is slipping. But the Blood Angels are slipping, too. So when the real bad guys show up (evil scientists are always more evil than regular evil people), both sides form an uneasy truce.

And there's a girl. Like, a Shattered girl who is Gabriel’s age. And she's a bad guy and stuff. I shipped it from the second she hit the page. Book 3, maybe??

I can't spoil the third act, but it's a wild ride. And … just … Caleb. Can I say that much? He doesn't die. But just. CALEB. I've been bleeding inside since I finished the book. And that final scene with Bandit. WHY AM I CRYING.

This book could have been twice as long and I would have been happy. Maybe not that third act but the rest. There weren't as many cozy moments as in the first book and I missed them.

With book 1, I complained that the author was not hard enough on these characters. In book 2, I no longer have that complaint. Gabriel really gets put through the emotional wringer, everything from joy to grief to terror. But what's nice is that he's not a wimp. He never quits fighting, although sometimes he wants to. There's a lovely part where he acquires a rosary and the prayers carry him through dark times. I was glad, because the lack of religion in a Catholic-dominant area was beginning to strike me as odd and phoney. There's another author who has chosen to omit all religion from her world (even for funerals and weddings!) and it feels so empty. Thankfully this author was more courageous.

Someday I would like to meet the author and thank her for hurting me this much.

It's times like this I really wish I could somehow rate a book higher than five stars

I was REALLY excited for In The Unbreaking, and it did not disappoint. Watching Gabriel and the rest of the team protect their region, despite how HARD it is for them, was so beautiful. The team dynamics honestly make me SO happy, especially Tara and Caleb, and Gabriel and, well, everyone. (I do not latch onto main characters often. Gabriel is a DEFINITE exception)

Another thing I love that Brigitte Cromey's really good at is giving characters breaks from the intensity, and letting them be happy for a while!! And I treasured all of the sweet team bonding scenes. Especially the fictional references

Anyways, I cried multiple times, which is almost as rare as me latching onto main characters, so clearly this book is insanely good. This review does NOT do it justice. It's so good, I don't even know how to express it!! Read it, and prepare to be devastated, but also really really enjoy it

So, this is the wrong book to read an hour before bed. If you want any sleep at all, or if you want a sweet, peaceful read that doesn't get your adrenaline pumping..... Maybe find a more calming bedtime story.
That said, I regret nothing. This book was a blast from start to finish and I need the next one so badly!
Also, I may or may not have come close to tears, and/or screaming at the author. This story is one for the ages. 10/10 recommended!

Some books just have a way of digging into your soul and laying it bare.

This is one of those books.

I think this would have completely broken me, had I read it at the height of my own struggles last year. At the same time, I think it could’ve been a lifeline. Even now, the way some of it hit the heart of how I felt brought me to tears, and brought me comfort.

All that in the midst of anxiety inducing peril, mind you, that just kept ramping up!

Brigitte makes characters so relatable, and yet still so inspiring. You feel their hurts, and you can aspire to grow the way they grow. This team is just incredible, fighting for their home, in a struggle that just gets more desperate, yet never hopeless, not to them. The action and peril is continuing on the trajectory started in the first book, and increasing at an alarming rate. Book three is gonna be a stress fest, no doubt! But a comforting one…

Because it’s a book about saving the world (hopefully…), yes, but when it comes down to it, it’s about personal struggles, personal growth, family, and hope. 💙

The dedication to this book says it all:
''...to those who've found themselves in hard season after hard season, but continue to fight hard and hold fast. May dawn break soon.'

This one has all the pain. And yet all the battle ready fight and hope.

My favourite part (taken out the possible spoilers)
''They got you out. You're not powerless now. Breathe.''
''It's alweys there, Gabe. Ican't get rid of it.''
''I know. But there's more to life than this, remember? There's more to life than what's locked inside your head.''

Coarse language: none, if i remember well
Violence & gore: moderate violence, very mild gore if any
Sexual content: none

Y’know how there’s some books that really gut punch you and leave you for dead on the side of the road?
Yeah this is that book, and it does it in the best of ways. I’ve loved seeing Gabriel and the rest of Squad 36 as they grow into a little family, and it hurt to see how tired they are. Tired of fighting a losing war that has no clear winner, and with no support. Tired of taking lives pointlessly and constantly hurting.
There was a moment where Gabe just wanted to lie down and stop feeling anything at all, and man I felt that. Life can get really heavy at times, and make a person want to just give up and wither away.
But Brigitte reminds us (and them) that life is always worth fighting for, even when it feels hopeless. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. God always has good in mind for His children, even if we don’t see how the pain right now fits into His plan.

Okay so I (vainly) prayed Judge would miraculously rise from the dead because he was one of my favourites from the first book (listen, it’d been a bit since I read the book and the details got a little fuzzy). Hopes were dashed, day was ruined, my boi did not arise from the grave. *sad noises*
Caleb remains my favourite along with Gabriel. *pats both their heads* These poor boys have gone through so much, and I love seeing their brotherly bond grow stronger. Can’t wait to see what shenanigans they get into in the next book. I’m sure Brigitte won’t let anything bad happen to them ever again, RIGHT?
Also speaking of the next book, I NEEEEED it immediately. Faster than that actually would be amazing.

If you like stories of dusty heroes who’re sore and tired but still fighting for good because it’s the right thing to do, this is your book. Read it, please.

I was (internally) screaming throughout the entire thing because it’s just THAT AWESOME.

Not only does ITU bring in new plot threads that really up the stakes and elevate the story, but it also really leans into the found family the squad has found with each other—I absolutely ADORED the wholesome brother bonding between Gabe and Caleb. Even if this book had no plot whatsoever I would read it anyway SOLELY FOR THESE CHARACTER DYNAMICS. They’re like my favorite thing. Plus, I need Sierra’s backstory—she’s so interesting!

And how could I not mention Tía Gloria. I was absolutely CACKLING at that, by the way.

Another thing I loved was the setting—the author’s love for the Sonoran Desert really comes through, and I enjoyed the way the culture of the area is seamlessly weaved into the story. It really makes the book stand out, in my opinion. (And it hit a little close to home, as I live near a desert as well. :P)

So, despite the fact that I was about to sue Ms. Brigitte for emotional damages because of everything the poor characters went through, I would 1000% recommend it to fans of hopeful dystopia, found family, sensitively depicted trauma, and post-apoc sci-fi. Easily earned five stars.

Ahhhh, I need book 3! Can’t wait!

I received an ARC from the author, but all opinions are my own.

At last I can post my review that has been sitting in my Bookmory app. XD

I nearly cried at least three times. I have so much appreciation for Brigitte letting her characters go through hell and struggle and breakdown...but still keeping sweet, funny, and even cozy moments, and for preserving such a core of hope, love, and fierce determination. That feeling of weariness and wanting to give up but saying "no, I still believe this world, that people, that my friends, that even myself, are worth fighting for." As I read this book I definitely fell more in love with these characters and the themes of courage, selflessness, found family, hope, humanity, and connection, with a bit of faith, too. Really good handling of trauma/PTSD, anxiety, and grief. Excellent worldbuilding. Definitely recommend this series if you like gritty (PG-13, but at times heavy, but not overpoweringly so) stories full of hope, super-powered characters, squad-of-soldiers-found-family, dystopian, and/or sort of post-apocalyptic (and western US desert) settings.

(I read an ARC, but a review or positive review/rating was not required, and all opinions are my genuine obsession. XD)

Like I said about book one, there's something deep about the setting to a story when it means almost as much as the characters. We fight for many things, but fighting for a place, a place that's home, a place that's changed from all the wars and hurts and all the battles that left their scars? That's where this book hits home. Right in the heart. Right there, where life hits us.

Will this book make you wish you were part of a team like Squad 36? Maybe. But I don't think it's meant to. More than anything, I think it's meant to show us that in our lives right now, right here, wherever we are, we can join or build a team and find a place to defend. Even as we wait for book three (um, author, as soon as possible please) that's the message that sticks with me. Yeah, they'll fight whatever comes next. Yes, it's been hard and will be hard and it's not over yet. But also, don't give up. Not yet.

After reading The Shattered Ones, I knew book 2 was going to be epic, while wondering how on earth it was going to live up to book 1.

And honestly? It blew me away. My heart MELTED on several distinct occasions, and it was the perfect way to continue on the characters' stories. It took me a few chapters to be riveted, but man, once this book had me, it HAD me. It's been a long time since I was so sucked into a story world, totally forgetting everything happening around me as I was surrounded by the characters' emotions.

Just. AHHHHHHH the feels. I might need to make fanart. (Copious amounts.)
