A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro: A Southern Novel

Rate this book
A small dose of kindness can go a long way.

Andy Clark has always been different. But it isn't just the tumorous mass covering half his face that sets him apart—it's his quiet kindness. As an anonymous do-gooder in Flatsboro, North Carolina, Andy lives out what his mama taught him, even though she's no longer there.

Della Rose Miller, a well-known former beauty queen, escapes her crumbling marriage to arrogant Wade Miller and moves back to her hometown in hopes of finding reprieve. She and her daughter settle into a little Flatsboro apartment and quickly learn that they’re in the same complex as a childhood classmate whose heart Della Rose broke in third grade.

With her life turned upside down, Della Rose is uneasy about starting fresh, but when unassuming Andy turns his generosity toward her daughter, an unlikely friendship rekindles. When a heroic act suddenly pushes Andy into the spotlight, he risks his anonymity and quiet day-to-day habits to stand up for what's right.

As Della Rose navigates the end of her marriage and Andy continues his secret philanthropy, they navigate grief and trusting God. Heather Norman Smith weaves a charming and heartwarming Southern story to remind you of the power of simple kindness.

Book Review: A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro by Heather Norman Smith

Blog Post: https://bookloveramanda.blogspot.com/...

This book completely blew me away. As a special needs mama, this book touched my heart and didn't let go y'all. It's one of those that truly will stick with me. It's about friendship, second chances, forgiveness, being kind to one another...especially when no one is watching. This book shares the Gospel of Jesus Christ in such a beautiful way. Our characters navigate grief, life's hardships, and how to trust the Lord in those moments. A favorite book of 2025 for me for sure.

Andy Clark has always been different. That's how the synopsis starts this book off. He's always had a tumorous mass covering half of his face but he's also the anonymous do-gooder, in quiet kindness....in Flatsboro, North Carolina. Andy is living his life exactly how his mother taught him. She left so many notes on cards for him that he reads after her passing over and over to continue to get her advice. He is a believer in Christ and wants to always do what is right. He was the caretaker for his best friend with down syndrome and when he passes away, Andy is devastated. How will he get through this?

Then we have Della Rose who is a former beauty queen with a crumbling marriage to Wade Miller. He cheated on her and from the first chapter, we see Della leaving Wade with their daughter as she goes back to her hometown of Flatsboro with an unknown start and hopeful second chances. Della and Andy used to be best friends back in third grade but things happened where they were forcefully separated years ago. The Lord puts Della on Andy's heart and their friendship helps her navigate the grief of her ending marriage and Andy's continued grief over the loss of his best friend.

Just writing this review I am in tears again and it's been a week since I finished the book you guys. I was just so moved by this friendship story between Andy and Della Rose. Della's little girl also added so much to the story as well.

We saw the beauty of being kind.
We saw redemption in Christ.
We saw small town kindness on display, even in the hard times of people who may be unkind sometimes.
We saw honoring those that are different that you.
We saw the ability to have a second chance after your marriage ends.
We saw a beautiful southern, small town story and so much more.

Thank you Heather for such a beautiful story. I won't forget it. A special thank you to Kregel Publications for a complimentary copy of this book to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fans of General Fiction don't miss this one! I'm so glad to have discovered this novel.

Andy Clark was born with a physical abnormality on his face. This has impacted so many areas of his life and generally, not in a positive way. Despite that, he stays positive and gives so much to others.

Della Rose Miller is newly separated from her cheating husband and returns to her hometown of Flatsboro. She and her elementary age daughter are starting over. It's a tough season for Della Rose as she struggles financially and emotionally.

I love the characters in this novel including secondary characters Tyler and Mrs. Garcia. The epigraphs primarily written by Andy's deceased mother in a journal are great additions to the novel.

My gratitude to publisher Kregel for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

I usually read romance novels, but I picked up this book because the description caught my attention. I just had to find out how the story would go.

Andy has always known he is different. Because of a tumor that changed half of his face, people notice him right away. But his strong confidence, shaped by his faith and the lessons his mother gave him, has always made him stand out in a good way. When Della, his childhood friend, comes back home, it feels like perfect timing for Andy.

Della has lived a fancy life, full of parties, money, and friends who were not real. But when she discovers her husband has been unfaithful, she returns home, unsure of everything she once believed. Her old life is gone, and now she is focused on what really matters, her daughter Harper. Worst yet, her husband still tries to control her, making things harder. When Harper connects with Andy, it brings Della and Andy back together as friends. Both of them are hurting in different ways. Andy is sad over the loss of a close friend, while Della is sad about losing the life she thought she had. Andy finds peace in his faith, but Della is not ready to believe the same way. The question is, can they both find healing and hope together with God’s help?

This was such a sweet book. The town of Flatboro felt so warm, kind, and welcoming. And Andy was the best part of the story. He is the kind of man everyone should look up to. His strong faith and his heart for helping others made him such a special character. I truly enjoyed reading about him!

I gave this story 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

I received a complimentary copy of the book, and this review is my honest opinion.

Okay… all of my hopes for this book came true, so kudos to the author for knowing exactly what I needed.

I always have a hard time with divorced characters falling in love for the second time. It’s not that I want to be judgmental… but Jesus said it’s adultery. I would never condemn someone for it, by any means, but it makes it a hard plot for me to fully appreciate. Thus, I was a little leery when I realized Della Rose was a divorced main character. Most of the time, our two POV characters end up falling in love, non?

A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro indeed did not follow that trend, and I am SO glad for it. The book has such a sweet, pure plot, and it genuinely made my heart happy.

Andy is one of my favorite male MCs ever. He’s so sweet, and does so much for the community around him, even when so many of them reject him due to tumors on his face that he was born with, and they so easily turn on him when lies are told. The rekindling of his childhood friendship with Della Rose is beautiful, and his relationship with Della’s daughter, Harper, is DARLING.

I love Pastor Phillip, and Mrs. Garcia, and Joyce, and man, I wish we got to meet Wendell, Andy’s roommate who passes away very early in the book. He sounded like such a sweetie! GREAT cast of side characters here.

The faith journeys, especially Andy’s, were very poignant, and I loved Della Rose’s journey to independence and freedom from her jerk of a husband. The quotes from Andy’s mom at the beginning of each chapter were wonderful as well!

I really have nothing bad to say. Mind you, there is a bit of content, since Della Rose’s husband has been cheating on her, and Della encounters his mistress and has some less than gracious thoughts. However, it’s very light, and the book overall is so beautiful.

If you’re a sucker for romance-free but touching fiction, give this one a try!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro is the first book I have read written by Heather Norman Smith. This was such a cute southern story.

The setting was great. Set in Flatsboro, North Carolina, it was the perfect southern town for this story. The storyline was great. Della Rose is shattered when her husband cheats on her. The best thing she could do was to separate and try to create a better environment for her daughter. Through all the struggle and pain, Della Rose overcomes a lot.

The character development was good. I loved seeing Della Rose as she is rebuilding her life. Mending her past hurts and learning to lean into God and forgive and ask forgiveness. Andy had such a touching life aspect. Through his grief and pain, he is learning that he has to rely on others, not just himself. I loved pulling back the layers of these two and seeing them overcome their hardships and lean into God.

Heather Norman Smith did a great job of intertwining faith throughout the book.

As I began reading this book, I was immediately drawn to Andy and his neighborhood in Flatsboro, where the tea is sweet and a sense of community is palpable and strong. I especially enjoyed the intergenerational friendships that formed and grew into chosen family.

I loved the ways that Andy’s mom had taught and influenced him during their time together here on earth. She taught by words and by example. From her, he learned to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. He was taught to use all of his senses to notice and appreciate the many beautiful gifts all around him. She installed in her son a deep sense of gratitude and an amazing capacity for kindness.

I love second chance stories and this heartwarming novel was filled with more than one. These second chances were made possible by intentional acts of kindness, forgiveness and much extending of grace. Such beautiful examples of how we should live our lives. The characters in this book took loving their neighbors to a whole new level. Loving loyal friendships were formed, faith was restored and hope was renewed.

The carefully chosen words and gentle storytelling in this book were a comforting balm for me. Read it and be blessed, I know I was.

As in Flatsboro, may we learn to count our blessings more than our troubles, just like Andy did. I encourage you to read this book, spread kindness and love others well.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel Publications and NetGalley. All thoughts expressed in this review are mine.

Completed: Oct. 10/25

Format: borrowed audiobook (Everand)
Narrator: Melissa Redmond (excellent)
Challenge Prompt: CNL’s #6 of 50 - “by a new-to-you author”

Book #129 of 2025: new-to-me author

I read a review where this book came highly recommended. The cover, the title, the summary, and the accolades by the reviewer got me searching for it right away. The world needs a lot more KINDNESS these days....

I always love a small community feel with all sorts of people and this delivered in spades. I appreciate the everyday things like chatting at the grocery store, neighbours checking in, a church reaching out, etc. The characters were a beautiful array of folks:
-- a woman (Della Rose - MFC) fleeing a narcissistic and cheating husband with her little girl, Harper
-- a man (Andy - MMC) with a facial anomaly with a HUGE heart and a secret
-- a joyful man with Down's Syndrome
-- a caring pastor
-- a kind grocery clerk
-- a loving neighbour
-- a homeless man looking to build a new and better life
-- and more!

God has created us all uniquely and gives us others to learn from and stretch us. Sometimes we don't always realize it until we open ourselves up to the possibilities before us. We all have a mask or two. It may be physical or mental. Della Rose has always had beauty and lived an affluent lifestyle without feeling she needed God. But is she fulfilled and truly happy? Did her husband just replace her overbearing and controlling father? In contrast, Andy was born with a facial disfigurement that covers half his face. He loves Jesus with his kindness and serving others. However, both have some things to work through and learn. God provides them a second chance to have a friendship again. They both learn that family can come from other sources. The inter-weaving between them all is so touching and so illustrative of God's hand always providing and working.

I have to highlight the character that affected me the most -- Andy's late Mom. We get to know her through his memories but also through the beautiful index cards she left him. They're filled with stories and reminders of their life together, encouragement, and sharing the goodness of God. I found myself feeling inspired and completely wow'd by her incredible love and belief in her sweet son as well as her absolute worship and trust in God.

This novel does include a death, the betrayal of adultery, verbal and mental abuse, a near tragedy, homelessness, gossip, and other big things. Yet there is also healing and so much goodness. This novel is like a delicious, well-balanced meal.

I respect that this novel stays focused on friendship, community, growth, and especially trusting in God to guide. Anything else, like romance, would have felt out of place and forced. Not everything was wrapped up in a perfect, red bow either. Just like life! Selfishly, though, I feel that a sequel could be done.... Or maybe a series?? (Wink, wink - nudge, nudge)

Not surprisingly, my two favourite highlights from this book come from Gloria, Andy's late Mom:
(1) "I know it's hard but we have to count it all joy. If we never knew bad, how would we know to be thankful for the good?"
(2) " We see the ugly side, all the stitchin' that looks like a jumbled mess. But on the flip side, God has woven a masterpiece."

About the book:
In the small town of Flatsboro, North Carolina, Andy Clark stands out—not just for the tumorous mass that covers half his face, but for the quiet kindness that seems to radiate from him.

When Della Rose flees from a crumbling marriage, she finds herself in Flatsboro with her young daughter, seeking solace and a fresh start. When their paths intersect with Andy’s, his generosity towards Della Rose's daughter is the beginning of a heartwarming friendship. As Della grapples with the heartbreak of her past and Andy faces his own pain, they both turn to God, discovering that peace and redemption are possible even in the darkest of times.

My thoughts:
This sweet and poignant tale beautifully illustrates how simple acts of kindness can spark not only friendships, but also lead to healing and second chances for those burdened by both physical and emotional scars. This story handles difficult topics such as a broken marriage, the loss of loved ones, and grief in a way that is filled with hope.

One of my favorite elements of this novel was Andy's incredible character. His gentle kindness, particularly toward Della Rose's daughter, brought tears to my eyes several times. Heather's ability to capture the charm of small Southern towns and the warmth of their communities is simply delightful! At its heart, this story beautifully weaves together themes of kindness and God’s redemptive love.

4.5 ⭐️s | Andy Clark lost his best friend the same day he saw his former childhood best friend crying in a church in his small town of Flatsboro, NC. While he’s beloved by many, the mass of tumors covering half his face have made it difficult for him to fit in since his youth. With his friend and roommate gone, he’s not sure how he’ll deal with the grief.

Della Rose Miller hasn’t been in Flatsboro in years—she’d married, gotten wealthy, and lived a charmed life a few hours from town. But her husband’s infidelity led her to move back to the town she grew up in with her young daughter. Little did she know she’d be moving into the same apartment complex as her childhood friend—the one she’d hurt so deeply in the third grade when she walked away from their friendship.

Even in the same building, Andy and Della Rose keep their distance—until a split moment circumstance weaves their lives back together.

This is a story of second-chances—at friendship, life, and faith! There was so much for both Andy and Della Rose to work through—grief, anger, disillusionment, fear—and they both grew so much throughout the book. I loved Della Rose’s daughter Harper and her sweet friendship with Andy.

One of my favorite elements was the author’s choice to emphasize friendship over romance. It would have been a very different book if she’d tried to pair Della Rose and Andy romantically and I’m really grateful that she didn’t. If you’re a sucker for redemptive stories with strong faith threads and found family, this is a great book to check out!

If you are looking for a heartwarming book that takes place in a small town and teaches a thing or two about being kind to others then this is the book for you. This contemporary novel is truly a very enjoyable read and gives off some of the vibes of Forrest Gump. The characters are truly wonderful and applaud the main protagonist Andy managing to be so kind to those who have ridiculed him for something that is out of his control.

As mentioned before we are introduced to Andy who has always been different due to his disability. His mother before her death taught him that kindness was the most important thing a person could have. In preserving her legacy Andy does anonymous random acts of kindness around town. Meanwhile former beauty queen Della Rose Miller returns back to Flatsboro after a failed marriage.

As it turns out Della and Andy have history together as Della broke his heart in elementary school. However, they must learn to coexist as they live in the same building complex. However, a developing friendship between her daughter Harper and Andy could be the answers to Della learning the beauty of kindness.

An amazing work of Christian fiction. Andy, disfigured since birth is a loner in town. Often the source of ridicule and stares, Andy remembers the words of his
Mother, who raised him in the church. Although his Christian Faith is strong, Andy dedicates his time to do good projects to make the town better. He is a care taker for Wendell, a young Down syndrome man. One day, Andy spots a new neighbor, a past classmate Della Rose and her daughter Harper. Della Rose has recently left her husband, after discovering his infidelity. A former beauty queen, Della Rose’s life has dramatically changed.

Andy is truly concerned with doing good and following God’s will. His dedication to his church leads him to continue he to invite Della Rose to attend.

The town of Flatsboro is truly a home to Andy. After a heroic act, Andy realizes how lucky he is to be surrounded by friends

This was my first time reading a book by Heather Smith and I’m excited to read more. A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro was refreshing and hopeful. It navigated deep topics with grace and the prevailing message was the redemption of Christ on the cross. Repairing relationships is not easy and the author did a fabulous job at making those scenes relatable and realistic. I will read it again!

Physical anomalies. Special needs. Marital indiscretions. The do-good fund. Trying to do it all under your own power instead of God's.

A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro is so good. I'm not sure how to even write a review on it.

One of my favorite parts is that it didn't become a romance.

Now hear me out, because I'm sure if you know me at all, you're chuckling.

It would have been so easy for the author to make the MCs a couple-a little tweak here and there-but it wouldn't have felt natural. It would have felt rather forced and unrealistic. I think she did a beautiful job with these characters.

I'm not sure what else to write. This is different than pretty much any other book I can think of. Heather Norman Smith handled grief wonderfully, including where we sometimes go wrong with it. She showed rekindled childhood friendships. There was forgiveness, grace, and so much more.

This was just a really good book.

And I also really liked Joyce. 😉

There was one storyline that didn't quite get wrapped up, which kind of niggles at me, but not enough to lower my rating.

A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro by Heather Norman Smith is one of those gentle, soul-nourishing stories that sneaks up on you with its quiet power. Heather Norman Smith paints a tender portrait of small-town life in North Carolina, where kindness and faith ripple out farther than anyone realizes.

At the heart of it all is Andy Clark. Marked physically by the tumorous mass on his face, Andy could have been written as a tragic figure but instead, he shines. His humility, compassion, and the anonymous good deeds he carries out around Flatsboro embody the lessons his mama instilled in him. Andy’s character is a reminder that true beauty lies in how we treat others.

Enter Della Rose Miller, a former beauty queen with a life that looks much shinier on the outside than it feels inside. Freshly separated from her husband, she returns to Flatsboro with her daughter, hoping to start over. What she doesn’t expect is to find herself living next door to Andy, the childhood classmate she once hurt. Watching their unlikely friendship and tentative second chance at connection grow is deeply moving.

What really stands out is how the story balances grief, faith, and the bravery of starting again with a wholesome Southern warmth. There’s small-town charm, there’s heartbreak, and there’s a steady undercurrent of hope. When Andy’s generosity can no longer stay hidden, the way the community and Della Rose respond feels like a beautiful payoff for all the quiet moments of kindness along the way.

If you love novels that celebrate faith, redemption, and the extraordinary power of everyday goodness, this book will leave you with a full heart and maybe even a tear or two.

✨A touching Southern story that reminds us all: even the smallest kindness can change a life.

As I began to read A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro I tumbled into the midst of this tender and inspiring story. In any small town, everyone knows everyone else’s business. Mostly that is true, but sometimes an individual’s kindness is overlooked. Smith’s hero, Andy, is humble and kind, but often pushed aside because of a physical disfigurement. But Andy shows how one person’s selfless kindness can change others. Loved this book!

This was such a beautiful, touching story about the difference kindness can make in a person's life. Andy was such a sweet guy, always sincere and caring about others. He's had a hard life because of the tumorous mass that covers half his face, with some people scared or disgusted. His own father left so his single mother raised him alone. She was an incredible woman and taught him about faith and how to treat others. We really get to know her even though she's passed because of letters she wrote as he grew up that he'd take out and read. His grief over losing his best friend and roommate that he took care of was incredibly touching; he had Down syndrome and was always happy and full of joy. Andy went through a lot of changes in the story. Not only did he lose his best friend but a woman he knew when they were little kids moved in to the apartment building and he could tell she really needed a friend. He also wanted to tackle a bigger philanthropy project and met a man down on his luck who could assist him. We also get Della Rose's side of the story as she's dealing with being on her own for the first time in her life and needing to support her daughter. Her husband becomes threatening and that creates an element of suspense in the story as I kept waiting for something to happen with him. She also wondered if there could be something to faith after knowing Andy again and seeing the love of Jesus shine through him. This was set in a small Southern town and that was another character in itself. I laughed, I cried. I highly recommend!

A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro is uplifting general fiction, and I enjoyed my time in this fictional small Southern town.

Motivated by his Christian faith and the values instilled by his mother, Andy Clark is kind and optimistic as he leads a quiet life, partially due to the tumorous mass covering half his face. It's his mission to anonymously perform acts of kindness to benefit others, especially children in the community.

One day he discovers Della Rose Miller, his former friend and classmate, crying in the church sanctuary. Why is she back in town? Why is she so upset? What can he do to help? After Andy talks with her, his life begins to change and expand.

This is a sweet friendship story filled with memorable characters, many of whom experience meaningful growth. The ways Andy helps others is admirable, especially given his limited resources. The plot is fairly predictable, but I appreciated that the author surprised me a few times along the way. The concept of Andy's mother's journal in the form of index cards in a recipe box was unique, and I liked the inspirational quotes attributed to her that begin each chapter.

While I enjoyed this, I wish it had a more descriptive title and I didn't like the term "home wrecker" used several times to describe a character. Also, some of Della Rose's decisions at the end felt unrealistic.

Readers looking for a cozy, inspirational story without romance or mystery will likely enjoy a visit to Flatsboro.

I love this book! From beginning to end, the story drew me in. Its endearing characters — and even the unlikable ones — maintained a reality that mirrors true experience. At times I was moved to tears, and I was impacted by the biblical wisdom woven throughout. Uplifting, touching, and sweetly entertaining, this novel settled softly in my heart, enriching me with truths that flow from God's heart. An excellent read.

I have never read anything by this author before so she is a new-to-me author and I’m so glad! I don’t typically go out of my way to read general fiction, but this one was so good. I found myself getting immersed in the community of Flatsboro and the people there. This story was unique as well as the leading male character Andy was born with a large tumor on half of his face, so right away it’s different from other books where the leading male character is what society would consider “perfect” in his looks. Andy’s heart however makes him the most perfect leading male character. I teared up with him as he faces grief and cheered him on as he stands up for his friends and protects them. His giving heart is truly tender and something you want to strive for.

The leading female character Della Rose is coming out of a broken somewhat abusive marriage and her journey of faith was very realistic and great to see her growth throughout the story. I loved that her friendship with Andy was restored and they could protect each other like they promised when they were little.

Overall this was a great story full of friendship, faith and heart! Oh and the side characters were great too! We can’t forget about them and hopefully one day we can return to Flatsboro once again!

I usually like to read Christian romance/romance suspense so this was a little different for my normal but I was very pleased with this book. I’ve never read anything but this author before, I’ll definitely pick up another book her soon.

About the book, it’s a southern town called Flatsboror, NC (fictional, but could be real with the way the name goes). Andy is a man who was born a deformity on his face. Della Rose and her daughter fled their home after Della Rose’s husband has an affair and refuses to leave his mistress. She comes across Andy, her childhood friend and now neighbor. Her daughter befriends Andy as she does not see anything wrong by him.

I loved this book so so much. I was very sad at the beginning just disclaimer bur the rest of the book is so good.

From the opening sentence I was entranced at the skill and beautiful word weaving of this "new-to-me" author as she pened this story. I was interested initially in the book because it is set in a small North Carolina town. A town that is surely fictional, but none-the-less should capture the essence of life in the South and specifically life in a small North Carolina town. The author, Heather Norman Smith, is a life time dweller in our fair state. And, yes, I am a life time dweller in North Carolina. So I thought this should be an interesting read.

A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro speaks well to what I have, at times, seen lived out in North Carolina. And that is small things done inconspicuously bringing a bit of joy, comfort, or kindness to a neighbor or passer-by. Just a kindness that speaks well to humanity and speaks well to what it is like to be a North Carolinian. But I digress from the book's actual story.

The main character, Andy Clark, was born, unfortunately, with a major tumor growing on the side of his face and it got worse as he grew. His loving mother had a way of instilling love and acceptance in Andy, and she "gentled" him through the roughness of a life of being different from his peers. In school there were difficulties and few friends; but one of Andy's friends was our other main character, Della Rose. And at some point in their school years, even Della Rose turned against Andy. That's the background and the story actually begins when they are in mid-life.

Andy has a way of doing unseen kindnesses and Della Rose (and her sweet little girl) have just left a marriage of 17 years because of a cheating husband and some abuse. Sadly, Della Rose's story is not limited to just Della Rose and North Carolina. It is an often occurring situation where shattered marriages, with wives and children in situations desperate for housing and support, can be seen throughout the world. But again, I digress from the story of Flatsboro.

As Della Rose works through the tense, sometimes frightful life she now experiences as a divorcee and single mother, she encounters kindness - A simple kindness - from a generator of kindness in Flatsboro. And the act of kindness is even more amazing in that it comes from a source so bereft of kindness itself.

I like and appreciated the skill of the author and the story of kindness and overcoming difficulties. I don't particularly care to read about broken families since they leave me with such sadness. But this is a well-done story and one I can recommend.

A SIMPLE KINDNESS IN FLASTSBORO is a story set in a small town about a man who has tried to live undefined by his his birth defect and full of care and kindness for others. It's also about his childhood friend who comes back into his life due to some difficult circumstances. It's ideal for those who enjoy strong Christian fiction with a devotional passage at the start of each chapter as well as a journal segment in each chapter from the main character's mother.

I liked the characters overall in this story and the story itself was sweet. There were different community members who were part of Andy's life and then his own relationship with Della Rose and her daughter. The main focus was basically Andy and his service to the community and Della Rose's situation and her regaining her faith and figuring out a new stage in her life.

I also realized that this story wasn't really my type of read. I rarely pick up a strong Christian fiction novel and this one definitely was that, but I also wanted a more compelling, genuine story. There were several things that didn't feel realistic or accurate. Andy wasn't intellectually challenged (he only had a physical birth trait) and yet he came across that way in how he was portrayed and his dialogue sometimes, so that bothered me. Della Rose also came across as not as intelligent as I thought she should have been as well, especially having been on the pageant circuit and being around her rich friends. There were some really dramatic things that happened and then some resolutions that felt forced. Della Rose's daughter was seven years old, which would put her in at least second grade, but she acted much younger. Maybe two years younger? There was a bit of a doctrinal thing that rubbed me wrong in how it was handled and how it was worked into the story. I also maybe wanted more from this book overall, instead of it basically being a snapshot of these characters lives that didn't necessarily lead anywhere. It just didn't resonate with me, but others may enjoy it.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a sweet Christian fiction story about friendship, community and kindness for readers who enjoy similar stories.

Took me two days to finish, with about 4 or 5 hours per day, audio book i suppose. The cover art drew me in and the title seemed to sit right with me. read the description once, and pressed play. I wanted something to listen to anyways, and better than watching Christian tiktok compelations on youtube.

at first, the writing style turned me off. a book that focused on describing everything. from the ant hill on the ground, to the bleeding paint on a sign, you're greeted with an almost overwhelming descriptive narritive, that you later go on to get used to and realize that you're reading/listening to the story how Andy would have told it, how he saw things in town. I usually would've quit, but it was an audio book and i was in the other room from my pc where it was playing from, so i figured i'd go on ahead and use the 'one chapter' rule, don't rule the book out until at least one chapter lol. glad i didnt.

Found family, lighthearted, faith filled, Jesus loving, people serving, spring/summer setting, loss and grief, found faith, dissbility representation with a non ableist narritive/view/ (yay!), wholesome, clean, and doused in southern hospitality and love!

TW for this book: Mentions of cursing (no written words), stalking, physical and mental abuse from partners and family, friends and family passing, spouse cheating, and at first glance (until you see the ending) bad theology. (EX. One of the main characters thinking that his mother, who passed, was speaking to him from heaven until he later on realized it was God revealing it to him)

overall, I'm reccomending this to my mom (who doesn't like heavy reads, and loves a good clean novel) and my aunt, who's recently been listening to a bunch of audio books and who shares a similar taste in books as i do!
May God bless yall, and lead any of yall to Him who are reading this and don't know Him! Jesus is King, forever and ever! Amen<3
(Ps. After reading this, I'm really in the mood for a Pb&J😭🫶

If you’re in the mood for a truly touching and heartwarming fiction with incredible characters in a small-town setting, then look no further than A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro. There is a sweetness yet sadness that permeates this novel from the beginning. I felt a calmness wash over me as I read, feeling a sort of kinship to each character that’s introduced as we delve into the narrative.

Andy was born with a physical abnormality, but thanks to his upbringing, he has managed to stay positive and build a life for himself. He has such a big heart that his caring attitude towards others is felt through the pages. He quickly became one of my favorite characters to date with this helpful spirit and calming presence.

Della Rose is a childhood friend that is back in town and both her and Andy are experiencing loss in their own unique ways. Their friendship shows that they can be a strength for one another during trying times, and watching their journeys unfold was a beautiful portrait of perseverance despite adversity.

The journal entries that Andy’s mother left for him to read were some of the sweetest moments in the story and don’t even get me started on the disgust I felt every moment that Wade was in a scene. That man is vile with a capital V and how much he mirrored my own ex was sickening.

This is general fiction at its finest. I enjoyed the fact that there was no romance but true friendship, lifting one another up, and showing what it truly looks like to carry one another’s burdens. It just goes to show that you never know what a simple act of kindness, and putting others first, can do.

This book surprised me in all the best ways. First of all, I thought it was going to have romance, but it really didn't. I thought maybe there was a hint of something to come right near the end, but it was so subtle, I'm not sure if I was just hoping to see it or not. But either way, while I love a sweet romance, this book surprised me in how sweet and encouraging and lovely it was without being a romance.

Secondly, Andy. Andy was the best. I loved his kindness, his determination, humility, and just everything about him. I love that he wasn't the perfect, handsome male lead which made him so much more relatable.

Della Rose felt real as well with her struggles. Sometimes she annoyed me with her obsession with self appearance, etc. but I had to remember that she wasn't a Christian (for at least most of the story), and her obsession was taught to her from her dad and then husband so she kind of had a lot to unlearn. Divorce stories are not usually something I am drawn to; however, I did understand the situation and that her husband had been unfaithful. I was also glad she didn't jump right into another relationship.

Harper was adorable and a delightful fun little girl character. I could have been fine with less of the watching YouTube and stuff, but once again, it would be accurate for the times we are in. It just annoys me that that is how we entertain kids these days.

I loved how much we got to know Wendell and Andy's mom. They were both such precious characters.

Then there was the pastor, and the hairdresser, and the cashier at the market and TJ and so many other delightful side characters. It made me fall in love with the town and want to visit the town again. And with that being said, I loved the southern small-town feel. Being a southern girl myself and from NC, it was fun to read a book set in that state.

The Christian themes were also surprisingly strong. There were a couple things I wasn't sure how it would go but it turned out fairly solid after all.

"There are a million ways to show kindness, but you only have to worry about finding one way at a time.. - Gloria Campbell Clark"

Andy Clark lives a simple life in Flatsboro, North Carolina. His days are measured by routine, walking to the grocery store, ensuring that the town's public food pantry stays filled, and enjoying time with the occasional neighbor and pastor. Most of what Andy does is accomplished behind the scenes, being that his physical appearance is marred by the presence of a large facial tumor down one side of his face, making him somewhat of a town oddity, at least that is what Andy assumes is true.

Della Rose Miller never thought that she would be back in Flatsboro with her seven year old daughter, living out of suitcases and struggling to regain purpose. Her husband's infidelity put a swift end to their storybook marriag convincing Della Rose that it was time for Harmony and her to start over. Imagine her surprise when she sees that her childhood friend, Andy Clark, rents space in the same apartment complex, and not only remembers her, but reaches out with the sort of unfettered kindness that Della Rose hadn't even realized that she needed.

With graceful depth and ingenuity, this story comes alive with the type of authenticity that forms from exceptional discernment written into the lives of characters who every reader will immediately love and adore.

I liked Andy’s attitude about living with a large birthmarkon his face he couldn’t hide and or fix. He tells a friend; some people believe that my life is difficult because I look so different. I suppose it might be challenging at times. Life can be hard. All of us face difficulties, regardless of who we are or how we look. But if you search for the good in life, you'll find that there are so many more blessings than troubles. Amen, Amen! “If we never knew bad, how would we know to be thankful for the good?” (good reminder)

I like how the author illustrates how beautiful kindness can be on so many levels. The enticing qualities of being polite and genuinely caring are seen in this small-town sensitivity, in which people respect others who differ from them. Andy's determination to show love, kindness, and compassion regardless of the circumstances touched me. The result is a refreshing and heartwarming story you won't want to miss.

Contempory Christian Fiction is a genre that I really enjoy! A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro by Heather Norman Smith is the latest in this genre that I have read.

I was reeled into the storyline from the very beginning. The main characters are Andy Clark and Della Rose Miller and the setting is Flatsboro, North Carolina. The characters really have a story together from the past. Andy is the town's "do gooder" and likes to help others anonymously and doesn't consider his physical abnormality to be "an issue". He looks at his inner beauty and gives to others. Andy does so because he knows he mom would have wanted him continue to live a life of doing for others. Della has come back home after leaving a marriage and in the process of a divorce. I really LOVE how Andy knows that Della is back in town, but doesn't want to add to the pressure she is already in. His acts of kindness toward Della's daughter are so heartwarming. I really LOVE that Andy helps Della and her daughter get settled into life in Flatsboro and there is a new start to their old friendship and relationship. The book is about moving forward, forgiveness, friendship, helping others without expecting back. My heart was truly warmed while reading this book. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction. GREAT BOOK!
