What would you do if you fell in love with the daughter of your family’s worst enemy? Jarrett Ross, son of John Ross whose story is told in the Trail of Tears, the Story of John Ross, lives during one of the most turbulent times of America’s history. Caught in the middle of a fifty-year feud, Jarrett Ross and Delight Flint attempt to conquer the odds of star-crossed love.
Jarrett’s faith and strength mature as he survives a hazardous buffalo hunt and Indian initiation rite, a deadly blizzard, the excitement of riding for the Pony Express on its most risky route, and as a pacifist inducted into the Union Army during the worst battles of the Civil War fought in the West.
His home destroyed. His loved one missing. His courage tested. Will love win over hate?
I loved this book. The first couple of chapters were hard for me to get invested in. The trials the Cherokees went thru were many. As an Oklahoman who was born less than 2 hours south of Tahlequah, I have been to the places mentioned in the book. I did not know prior to reading the book just how much the Civil War affected the Cherokee nation. Another great book by Anne. I received an ARC paperback copy of this book but chose to borrow thru Kindle Unlimited and read it in the Kindle version. I would have read this book anyway and I am so glad I did.
This was another wonderfully told story of real history, with part fiction in between. Jarrett Ross lived a very full life and did much in a short span of time. Being a small part Indian, he had friends in the Cherokee Nation. His friend Runninghorse took him on a buffalo hunt that lasted a little over a week. He learned much and physically pushed himself. Lost in a blizzard afterwards, he was rescued by Delight, a daughter of his family’s enemy. Telling her to wait for him, he joined the Pony Express. Another adventure full of danger and death. Then he was forced to join the army during the Civil War. He came close to death several times during these adventures but remembering Delight kept him pushing through to survive. He had a strong faith that kept him from killing and he also respected women. As his love for Delight kept him going, would they ever be united or had he lost her forever? I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author but was not required to write a review.
FOR SUCH A TIME by Anne Greene is the outstanding historical fiction story of Jarrett Rose and his life in Indian Territory. When division puts two star-crossed lovers on opposite sides in the Civil War, Jarrett must stay strong in his faith, do what he feels is right in his heart, and work hard through extremely difficult times, to get back to the one he loves.
Jarrett, the son of John Ross, feels he has big shoes to fill. Once, disoriented in a snow storm he arrived at a farm in need of help. Unbeknownst to Jarrett, he had shown up at the property owned by the Flints, a family his family had feuded with for years. Delight Flint, home alone and who instantly enveloped his heart, had offered his shelter. Surviving a buffalo hunt alongside his friend Runninghorse and an Indian initiation rite proved to himself he was strong enough to go out on his own. He ached for adventure. The desire to do more than farm has him leaving, with his fathers blessing, to join the pony express. It was there he acquired the nickname Ghost Rider. With faster ways of spreading the word, he no longer had a job. Heading home, he was forced to join the Union forces. Being one who won’t kill another, he became a scout. Can he survive and get home to his family and the woman he loves?
Delight feels she’s more than the woman she expected to be. She has opinions of her own. The one thing she knows is that she has very strong, growing feelings for a man she’s forbidden to see just because of something that happened years ago. She determined to get word to him during these trying times in hopes he gets them and returns the gesture. What will become of this man on the opposite side of the war? Will he come back to her?
Will two brothers, each on opposite sides, be forced to come face to face on the battlefield? Will Jarrett’s need for excitement and adventure be satisfied? Will maturity and common sense have him realizing that all he needs is right back where he started from? Can love survive distance, hardship and a fifty-year feud? Having both matured since their last meeting, will the love still be as strong between them?
FOR SUCH A TIME is a story where fact meets fiction and captivates the reading’s attention making the book impossible to put down. Anne Greene gives us a book laced with historical facts yet grabs the reader’s attention with action, danger, loyalty, friendship, humanity, hardships, and weaves within the pages a strong thread of faith. FOR SUCH A TIME is without a doubt FIVE STAR reading that I recommend to EVERYONE!
I receive a copy of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own. #ForSuchaTime #TheStoryofJarrettRose #AnneGreene #ChristianHistoricalRomance #HistoricalRomance #mustread
For Such a Time, the Story of Jarrett Ross by Anne Greene is a spell-bound historical fiction during the Civil war period. The story follows the Ross family in Oklahoma in the 1850's.
Jarret Ross, is the son of John Ross whose story was told in The Trail of Tears. With the desire to leave home to seek adventure, he joins the Pony Express and then the Union forces as a scout.
Jarrett, disorientated in a snow storm, found himself on the doorstep of the Flints, whose family has been feuding with his for years. Delight Flint was home alone, and offered him shelter. His heart was captured. "When she smiled, his thoughts scattered."
Anne Greene has such a distinct writing style that draws you into the story. You feel like you are riding along with the characters. There are so many historical facts which keep the interest high. This is a clean believable romance that has danger, friendship, loyalty and faith. "The story of ordinary people who do extraordinary things." A very compelling story.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
This is my first book by Anne Greene. I wasn't sure how I would like it since I don't usually read historical fiction, but this was so good! Anne did her homework in writing this book. She covers the hardship of the Civil War and the illegal Treaty of New Echota in 1835 that removed the Cherokee people from their land. This book is about Jarrett Ross, a young man of 20 living with his family in the Indian Territory. His family has a farm, his dad is a doctor and his older brother, Jordan, has left for college. This leaves Jarrett with the task of doing a good part of the work on the farm. Farming was not in Jarrett's heart. He had adventure in his heart, and the only way to fulfill that was to leave his family. The Pony Express was what excited Jarrett Ross! He wanted no part of the war and had strong Christian convictions regarding having to kill someone in war. Yet he had no choice when he was forced into serving. The story covers the many hardships, his love for a young woman on the opposite side of the war, and the suffering of those that fought. I will admit that some of it was hard to read, yet Christian ethics were written throughout the story. If you enjoy historical fiction, this story is for you! I received a copy of this book from the author. This review is my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book! I've read quite a few books related to John Ross, though this is the first about another member of his family. The story was fascinating, especially since I have an ancestor who fought in the Civil War. My ancestor fought not because he believed in slavery, he didn't own slaves, but because he knew the war would be fought on southern soil, he fought for his home. In this book, Jarrett didn't want to fight, he wasn't sure either side was right. He was forced into the war, the way I think a lot of others were. This book gives insight into both sides, and the choices we're all forced to make every day. I also love how the book shows "enemies" can become friends. There are some typographical errors in the book, and while they take me out of the story and are distracting, I didn't give fewer stars for this.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.
I recently finished reading For Such a Time and wow! Set during the Civil War, it reminded me of the YA novel My Brother Sam is Dead. Both books explore the brutal impact war has on families and friends, the struggles it causes with conflicting ideologies and moral dilemmas, and the harsh realities of conflict. In this book, we see the way Jarrett Ross' life is disrupted and the emotional toll it has on him and his family. He survives harsh weather conditions, being away from his family for long periods of time, riding for the Pony Express, and then finding himself unwittingly having a part in the Civil War. His courage and perseverance combined with his faith in God, carry him into adulthood. I think the author did a great job of making the reader feel what Jarrett was going through. I couldn't help rooting that Jarrett would some day return home to the young woman he loved. This is a powerful book and I give it five stars.
This is a history-themed love story that took place during the Pony Express and Civil War times about Jarrett Ross and Delight Flint. I did not read the first book in this series, but this book held my attention and kept me interested to the point that I now want to read the first book. I felt that it was more focused on the historical aspect rather than the love story, but maybe that is because I find history boring. It was my least favorite class in school. Jarrett was forced to fight in the war and I found some of the things he went through cringe-worthy when it came to his physical suffering and the hardships he and others in the book faced. That is what makes a good author though. Otherwise, it was a well-written book. If you like history and romance, you will definitely enjoy this book.
I received a copy of this book from the author. This review is my honest opinion.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The opinions expressed here are strictly my own. While reading this book it was like I had been transported back in time to the Civil War. This author has such a way with her words! I absolutely love her style of writing. Jarrett Ross and Delight Flint can be compared to Romeo and Juliet in that their two families are mortal enemies. The question is whether love will conquer all, you can read the book to get the answer! The buffalo hunt was so well portrayed that I could see myself as the Indian looking to down a buffalo for my family’s survival and as the Indian girl who took care of carving the buffalo for my family’s use of the entire buffalo. I was able to visualize all scenes of the war from a Christian Cherokee’s perspective and the difficult decisions to be made in the situations they found themselves. This was a good read and I highly recommend this book!
Excellent Book! I did not want to put it down. This is the story of Jarrett Ross, the son of John Ross, from Anne's book, "Trail of Tears". He has overwhelming obstacles to work through in some very hard times in America's history. Anne writes the story so vividly that you feel like you are right there beside him. She doesn't skip the hard parts that people more than likely did experience in those days. Anne writes thought-provoking details that keep you thinking about the story long after you're done. For me, the Pony Express experiences that Jarrett had were so lonely and heart-racing at times, but I was glad when he finally went back home. A favorite quote was: "Sometimes I have to take a stand for the values I believe in. What I am and what I do are what I take with me into eternity." I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
Historical Fiction fans, especially those who love stories about the old American West, will enjoy For Such a Time: The Story of Jarrett Ross, by Anne Greene. This sequel to The Trail of Tears: The Story of John Ross can be read as a standalone novel. For Such a Time takes place during the lead up to and the difficult time of the American Civil War and, with insight and moving language and scenes, the author presents the confusion of those events and the soul searching her characters needed to find what they truly believe and what their hearts desire. Strong yet vulnerable characters thrust into agonizing decisions, actions, and losses in an old west setting that is yet unique, a compelling love story, and a plot full of unexpected adventures and poignant turns, all together bring history alive. Readers will want to read all of Anne Greene's historical novels.
Jarrett is a young man who doesn't enjoy farming, so when the opportunity comes to go on a buffalo hunt he jumps at the chance. The hunt is successful, but on the way home he encounters a blizzard and looses his way. He takes refuge in the home of his families sworn enemy and falls in love with Delight. He learns about a job with the Pony Express and takes the opportunity to join them and leave the family farm. When he returns home he finds so much changed with the Civil War beginning, but Delight still feels the same as he does and he hopes when the war ends they can find a way to be together. He is conscripted into the Union Army, but as a pacifist he gets a position as a scout. With the help of God, he finds a way to try to hold on to his convictions. A very well written book with a lot of historical information written in.
For Such a Time by Anne Greene is a well-written, outstanding, mesmerizing historical fiction that centers around the life of Christian Jarrett Ross, who is a pacifist and the son of John Ross. Jarrett is inducted into the Union Army during the Civil War and is determined to stay true to his faith. Jarrett falls in love with the daughter of his family’s worse enemy which complicates his life. Jarrett’s faith and strength are put to the ultimate test as he is lost and finds himself in the middle of a dangerous buffalo hunt, a life-threatening blizzard and being a rider for the Pony Express. This is a story about love, faith, devotion and strength. It was a captivating story that made me want continue reading and brought tears to my eyes and I found myself smiling a few times. I received a copy of this book from the author and these opinions are strictly my own. I rated it a five.
For Such a Time is a riveting historical fiction book based on true events in the life of Jarrett Ross. He suffered much through hazardous weather, as a Pony Express rider & as an unwilling Union soldier. Through it all, he stayed true to his Christian faith. During a deadly blizzard, he stumbles into the home of Delight Flint. Their families have feuded for 50 years, but that does not prevent Jarrett & Delight from falling in love. Throughout the turbulent years of the Civil War, the two stay committed to each other.
This is an eye opening look at the little known tribulations of the Cherokee nation during the war. The story combines strong Christian faith, accurate historical events, adventure & romance; a sensational read.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
I like historical fiction and loved this book. I enjoyed reading about the conflicts in Indian Territory in Oklahoma during the Civil War. Life was hard for both the settlers and the Native Americans. The story is about Jarrett Ross and the hardships he encounters. There is so much detail that I could feel all of Jarrett's emotions and pain. He participates in a buffalo hunt, encounters a blizzard, and falls for young woman Delight whose family aligns with the Confederacy and he doesn't. Jarrett became an expert pony express rider. He became involved in the war. Would things work out for him and Delight? This is an excellent story. I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion. I can't wait to read more Anne Greene books!
Once again Anne Greene knocks it out of the proverbial park with another great novel. A must read for all Christian and non Christian romance lovers out there. If you don't think you like Christian romance books this novel will change your mind. For Such a Time: The Story of Jarrett Ross brings the reader to a tumultuous time in history. I felt as though I was going through everything that Jarrett and his love interest were going through when I read the book. The research that went into this book had to taken Anne Greene years to complete. I absolutely love all the historical detail. The Christian elements that are in this book speaks to my heart. I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
This is an amazing book that touched my heart in many ways. The love story is sweet and complicated. The timeline is during the Civil War.
Jarrett reminds me of the song whose lyrics are; I get knocked down but I get up again. He faces trial after trial; hardship after hardship but in the end he finds happiness, joy, love and completeness. Delight is a delight! She's compassionate, caring and loyal.
The saddest parts for me were reading about what happened to the Cherokee Nation during the war. I cannot imagine losing your family and land over and over. I need to read the first book in this series because it sounds very interesting.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
This book was wonderful. I had read the first one about the Trail of Tears when the Cherokee were forced from Georgia to Oklahoma. This one follows the Ross family in Oklahoma. The book gives great insight into how the Civil War affected the Cherokees. Jarrett Ross is one of the brothers that is pulled into the war, but on different sides. Jarrett also falls in love with the daughter of his family's worst enemy. The story is so compelling and makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens. And, the fact that it is based on history makes it even better. I do highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this book a lot. As I read the story, the descriptive phrases made me feel like I was there, experiencing the excitement and tragedy of the times. I liked the characters. I liked that their lives were guided by their beliefs. I applauded their steadfast love, in spite of everything which separated them. I appreciated the information which related to the events happening in the west during the Civil War time period and the historical setting. This story warmed my heart. I was gifted a copy of the book. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this book.
This is a stirring and descriptive historical novel. It encompasses the "Indian Territory" and hits on many events which occurred during the mid 1800's in The West. It is the companion book to "Trail of Tears, The John Ross Story." This book follows John Ross's son, Jarret, as he grows from teenager to adult during a very tumultuous time period. For me, Jarret appeared to be an accident waiting to happen. So many things occur around him, to him and through him. I enjoyed the letter writing the most although I found the language used to be a little too modern for the time period. I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
I started out thinking I was going to be bored out of my mind, but once I figured out the characters and time period, I truly got into the story and the history. I knew nothing of the Cherokee and especially knew nothing about their connection to the Civil War. I learned so much I can’t believe it! I guess I always pictured the “savages” on TV, rather than good Christian people. Additionally, the actual writing is excellent. The author sent me this book, but the review is my honest opinion. It was so nice to read something different from my usual.
A moving work of historical christian fiction that follows the coming of age for Jarrett Ross. A Cherokee descendant living in Oklahoma territory. Although there’s a bit of romance between a girl from a feuding family it truly is more of a focus on his life and what he wants from it without falling away from his beliefs. This book is a great reminder of life’s difficulties and the challenges that shape us. As an added bonus I learned some facts about how the Cherokee nation was affected by the civil war. Thank you for my gifted copy! These are my own opinions.
For all you history, buffs out there this book should tickle your fancy. It’s the next installment after a trail of tears. It’s set in the 1860s in the south. I can’t even imagine living during those times and all the conflict. This story follows Jarrett Ross and his fierce determination to make things right. Will he succeed and get the girl of his dreams? I was given a complementary copy of this book and the opinions are my own.
A very interesting historically true book. A western Romeo and Juliet. The stories of the Pony Express were very enlightening ....lots of details I never knew. The details of the lives of people, both white and Native American , were very difficult. People had a lot more strength and grit than people nowadays. I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
For Such a Time: the Story of Jarrett Ross was a fascinating glimpse into American history that I had very little knowledge of. Historically accurate but not dry with insight into the Pony Express, the Trail of Tears, and the Civil War among other things. Enjoyable Romeo and Juliet type romance that has its own happily-ever-after in spite of the horrors of war.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
I received a copy of this book from Author Anne Greene. This review is my own & is based from my own personal opinion. Stars Jarrett Ross, the son of John Ross from Trail of Tears & the love of his life Delight Flint, daughter of his family’s biggest enemy Claremont Flint. Their family has been enemies for 50 years. Do they learn to get along or do they carry on the feud? That’s for you to find out. This was a fabulous read! There is a lot of history written here of things I’ve heard about but never really knew the in depth backgrounds. Historical data about the Civil War. Pony express, Native American tribes participation throughout. A very hard working generation. Very well written story as all of Anne Greenes books I have read. Enjoy & take it all in. Feel it as if you were there.
This book was an adventure into history, with sprinkles of romance, tragedy turned to triumph, learning to fully trust in the God of it all and more, so much more. Entertaining with depth, inspiring with courage, a treasure to be shared generation to generation!
FOR SUCH A TIME - The Story of Jarrett Rose will take you on a nonstop intense, courageous , adventurous , heartache, historical, spiritual and romance ! It was absolutely amazing!
I really enjoyed reading this book. There was excitement, adventure, danger, and romance. There was also a lot of history, which I liked. I have some Cherokee in my ancestry and I loved learning more about that. I really liked the characters and the story.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
