Flow: Keeping Your Heart Alive When Life Hurts

Rate this book
When the unimaginable invades your life, it can leave your heart gridlocked—trapped in a tangle of loss, betrayal, disappointment, and grief. In those moments, God’s promises feel distant, and His goodness seems hidden.

But God... He has never stopped writing a glorious, abundant story for you. He has designed a way for your heart to be restored—no matter what you have endured. You can flow again with peace, purpose, and hope.

In FLOW, Joy Scott unveils an ageless pathway carved in the Psalms by King David himself on how you can process your heart pain.

Simultaneously, Joy shares her own life's journey of rejection and betrayal through an abusive divorce, the loss of her firstborn son, the battle through a deep years-long depression, delayed dreams, and disappointments.

Joy teaches you how to process your pain by guiding you with biblical insight and specific journaling questions using David's tried and true way of processing through painful circumstances including the topics of rejection, disappointment, injustice, loss and grief, resentment, and betrayal.

Through every valley in life, you’ll discover that no matter what you’ve faced, your heart can flow again.

I thought I was reading this book for a friend but quickly realized I was reading it for myself. Surprisingly, I was captivated quickly by the author's story and saw the parallels to my own life. After her story, then the relation to my own, combined with relevant scripture I could see how my heart was opening up to a new level of healing. Her "FLOW" acronym is catchy, it sticks, and it breaks down steps to leave the past behind, learn, heal, and step into a thriving new season of life where freedom lives. Thank you, Joy, for writing this book. I now have a few friends (and family) I believe will really benefit from reading this as well.

Flow is a tender, truth-filled guide for anyone walking through the valleys of grief, betrayal, or disappointment. Joy Scott doesn’t just write about pain—she walks with you through it, offering biblical wisdom and personal vulnerability that feel like a warm hand on your shoulder.

Drawing from the Psalms and her own story of loss and healing, Joy gently shows us how to process heartache without losing hope. Her journaling prompts and reflections invite readers to engage deeply, not just read passively. This isn’t a book you skim—it’s one you sit with.

Whether you’re in the middle of a storm or helping someone else through theirs, Flow reminds you that your heart still has a rhythm—and God is faithful to restore it.

“God doesn’t ask us to pretend we’re not hurting. He asks us to bring the pain to Him—and trust that healing will come.”

Highly recommended for anyone seeking emotional healing, spiritual renewal, or simply a deeper understanding of how to walk with God through suffering.

This book has life-changing power.
I've had the privilege of reading through it several times, and it has already changed my thinking about forgiveness and resentment.
It's an insightful look at how to apply Psalm 139 to your life, especially if you are recovering from trauma or deep hurts.
Joy writes with compassion and honesty, sharing transparently from her own experiences of an abusive marriage and the death of one of her children.
I highly recommend this book as a resource for trauma recovery or a companion to your counseling journey.

Joy has done an incredible job of sharing raw moments while coupling them with the hope that Jesus has brought her. She shared the lessons she has learned through living through brutal circumstances and points readers to the healer of our souls. There are reflection questions at the end of each chapter that lead to a very conducive book study. I have really enjoyed reading “Flow” and look forward to sharing it with others.

Almost finished reading the book, but I had to put in my two cents. Very thought provoking and I’ve taken several breaks to reflect on my own traumas and how it has affected my relationships and my life. I enjoy the scriptures presented and the workbook type questions.
