The story starts in the town of Abeja, where Luc Alden is the chief of police, investigating the murder of a mysterious woman. The case leads Luc down a deep, dark world of powerful magic and a shadowy, dark, and perilous monster that searches for souls to consume. All of which are linked to Luc's 8-year-old daughter, Lucy. She has supernatural abilities, which not only the shadowrunner wants but a secretive government agency also wants to possess. To protect his family and find a way to stop the Shadowrunner, Luc must put everyone on the line.

I want to say thank you to the author for allowing me to read his book and share my thoughts! I thought it was a pretty interesting story and a great beginning to a series (hopefully)! The story unravels from multiple POVs, so we can understand the family dynamic more and see the deep connection they have to one another.
They have to come together to defeat this shadow creature/dragon that has entered their world and understand these new twists in their reality.
I did appreciate the cultural inclusion in this book and the way the characters' backgrounds tied into the setting, which added a sense of authenticity. It made the world feel more real and believable.
I felt the book was very fast-paced, so the events were happening quickly and kept me intrigued till the end.
Though there were parts within the chapters where it would transition to a new pov, and I felt those weren't as smooth, and I would end up getting lost. But that could have been a mishap with the format of the eARC I was given, so it might be completely different in the final edition.
Overall, this story had great suspense and horrifying revelations when it came to the victims of the shadowrunner. It's a great indie read to add to your TBR, and the good news is..... It's available now!!!!

While this is not my normal genre of book, I figured it could be fun to try out something different. It felt very fitting for an October read--starting as a murder mystery and turning into a scary monster story. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of the novel--it was fun finding out new pieces of information along with the main characters. As for the scary aspect of things, I think I've read a few too many fantasy novels in my time. Instead of being (rightfully) freaked out by the existence of magic and monsters like most of the characters, I spent most of the story being intrigued and trying to figure out how the magic system worked.

I rated this book 3/5 stars because a) I don't generally love dark or scary stories, so I didn't enjoy it as much as the books I tend to give 5 stars and b) some pacing didn't match with my personal tastes. However, I did enjoy the story as a whole, and would be interested in getting another glimpse into this world or the lives of the main characters if the author ever decided to add to the story. Twas a good time.

Some mild swearing and mild to moderate gore/violence. (More than Harry Potter, less than Hunger Games)

The Shadowrunner is about a small town cop that encounters something that he cannot explain when investigating the murder of a young woman and the disappearance of a boy. Chief Alden is forced to confront the supernatural while protecting his family and the town that he swore to protect. One thing that I enjoyed about The Shadowrunner is that we don’t just see Chief Alden’s POV, but also his wife, his daughter (who has a big part to play), and other various characters. Each character feels real, which makes the story that much more enticing, especially Lucy. I also liked the fantasy element in the book and the organization in charge of managing these things loosely reminded me of the Men in Black. Overall, I would recommend The Shadowrunner if you like modern-day thrillers with fantastical elements mixed in.

An eerie, captivating read about a small-town cop, a girl with magic powers, and the evil force that wants to destroy them all.
