100 Cupboards: The Graphic Novel

Rate this book
Now a graphic novel! The bestselling and highly acclaimed 100 Cupboards series starts here.

What dangers lurk locked behind the cupboard doors?

Henry isn’t brave, but when he hears an odd thumping and scratching on the other side of his bedroom wall, he simply can’t ignore it. He scrapes off the wallpaper and peels back the plaster and discovers 100 mysterious mini doors—cupboards, really—of all different shapes and sizes. Through one he sees a glowing room and a man strolling back and forth. Through another he sees only darkness and feels the cold sense that something isn’t right. When his cousin Henrietta boldly travels into the worlds beyond the cupboards, it’s up to Henry to follow her to help her get back home. But now that he’s opened the doors, can he keep the evil inside from coming through?

Re-explore the world of 100 Cupboards in this brand-new graphic novel adaptation of the fantasy-adventure middle school favorite, from beloved author N. D. Wilson and award-winning illustrator Forrest Dickison.

“I was lost once. But I’m found now. I’m under the bed. I’m in the same culvert you are. Only, I don’t think you’re done tumblin’.”

Marvelous. Perfectly captures the art of the story in brand-new artwork.

🚪 heads-up for mildly creepy imagery, a bit of blood, vomit, and magic 🚪

NO ONE TALK TO ME IM LOSING MY MIND
i've literally only ever preordered two books in my life. the first one was The Door Before in 2017 and the second one was this one i maayyy have a track record. i'm SO normal about these books nearly ten years later when i am a full grown adult and not 12 years old and yet here i am still.
the art is actually PERFECT for the story. everytime someone showed up i was going YES OK THAT IS THEM FOR REAL the style just lent itself straight to how i've been imagining everything LOL. my kids!! frank and dotty!! it captures the charm and dry humor (and wonder) of the novel so well & also i think is succeeding at fleshing out the characters b/c that's the thing abt expressions yk. i love how endor is depicted, and i especially love the cats. . again i think what was left in & what was cut was pretty much perfect, but i am far too familiar with the novel so idk how this'll read to a new reader LOL.
literally having the worst time ever now because I want dandelion fire so bad it's not even funny. pipe dream of all time is getting my favorites in graphic novel/animated show form and holy MOLYYYY dandelion fire and chestnut king would go so so hard for real. like honestly 100C is really an extended prologue in some ways--setting up the cupboards & Nimiane & Henry, Kansas & the entire mystery of the story--and i am tantalized so badly by this adaptation because it's SO good. ok lol my singular quibble is why did they take "everyone likes Zeke" out :( my favorite conversation of the series fr WHY did it become like hey! NOT nearly as funny that way tbh but maybe it's nostalgia from me LOL. flip side is AWESOME additions like yes!! that's the upside of adapting this to artform!! go crazy!!!
someone come knock me out I have a polisci quiz to study for (girl i don't even do polisci what am i doing here) and work to finish and i'm now instead re-obsessed with 100C. myyyy kids man. baseball!!

I've been a fan of the 100 Cupboards series for about decade now, so you better believe I was ecstatic when I learned there would be a graphic novel adaptation.

And this did not disappoint in the least. At first, I was a little on the fence about the character designs, but then I remembered that this is technically a Middle Grade series (and meant for that age range and not people in their 20s like me), and the style choice was therefore perfect. I ended up falling in love with the style, both characters and settings, the more I saw of it. Personally, I think Forrest Dickison really caught the vision of the original book and brought it to life. And I wouldn't trust any kind of film adaptation of this series, so I am perfectly content with this visual option, lol.

Overall, as an avid fan, I'm giving this 5 stars. I would be curious to see what someone who's never seen read the original series would think, but I really doubt they'd hate it.

Now just tell me where to throw my money, and I will happily purchase the rest of the series as graphic novels. (Because that's the plan, right? Right??)

In a world full of magic and mayhem, young Henry is shipped off to his cousins in the middle of nowhere, Kansas. Until one night, he hears thumping within the walls, and after peeling off the wallpaper, does Henry find a hundred cupboards of all shapes and sizes. When his cousin Henrietta ventures into one of the cupboards, Henry realizes they’re portals to other worlds. Now, he must begin a new adventure to find Henrietta before the encroaching darkness encompasses not only his room but the world he now calls home.
Deep into a folklore setting, this graphic novel tells a story of one young boy and the many cupboards that act like portals to other dimensions. Hauntingly eerie and definitely spooky at times, readers will wonder what’s behind each cupboard. With an art style like Hayao Miyazaki's animated films, the swaying browns of the fields and the small moments of baby blues, the darker colors of this book bring forth a magical yet chaotic feeling to Henry’s story. However, the question remains: who really is boy Henry?

The 100 Cupboards graphic novel did not disappoint. I have read the entire series countless times and loved it every time. It has the same qualities that a classic would have, as well as mixing in adventure and Bible and mythological references.
Forrest Dickison's art captures well the world of Henry, Kansas, and of all the characters, from Uncle Frank to Eli Fitzfaeren. The style of his work keeps the hard edges that are to be desired in quality illustrating and he takes the time to make every frame capture the story as it was in the book.
In many adaptions to books, whether that be TV shows or graphic novels, the adaption can miss the point of the tale. This is not the case in the 100 Cupboards graphic novel. I recommend reading this especially if you've read the series, or if you're not a huge reader, this story will thrill you. Note: I am not getting paid for my input, nor is anyone asking for this review.

Forrest Dickison couldn't have captured the feel of this book more perfectly if he had reached into my head and pulled out everything that's been swimming around in there for the last 10 years. I honestly cannot believe this exists and I'm still going to be depressed if they just leave it here Please I'll do anything for dandelion fire I'm writing this with Speech to text while I walk through Aldi but for my three followers that will read this please buy this book and buy it for your friends so that ND is forced to make the rest of them

As a teen and preteen, the books that I read and reread the most were, without a doubt, N. D. Wilson's. His stories helped me process the hard things in life without compromising a sense of imagination and wonder. When I heard that 100 Cupboards was getting a graphic novel edition, I said "yes" and preordered without a second thought. XD And honestly, this was a really fun adaptation. The art style isn't my favorite and it took some definite getting used to, but it was a lot of fun to experience this childhood favorite in a new format.

While this did not hold me as well as the OG book did (which has and will forever hold my heart and love), I think this makes an interesting fantasy world way more accessible to reluctant readers/dyslexic readers. I also appreciated the depiction of the cousins and how the graphic novel made them more diverse than you could understand from the OG book. Overall, I'm excited for this new offering and want to reread the whole series again, which is always a good idea.

A great adaptation of the original novel! Many of the illustrations in the graphic novel are the exact images that popped into my head when reading the original book, I think partly because Wilson wrote the original book with such great imagery and detail, but also because Dickison took the time and effort to accurately illustrate. I read the original book aloud to my students last year and they loved it, now I’m excited to add this graphic novel to my classroom library for next year!

Amazing adaptation of the novel. The illustrations were great, the colors felt real, and each frame perfectly aligned with the original story. I definitely recommend this graphic novel to any young reader. To everyone that I passed the novel onto, they fell in love with the story. I honestly loved this representation. Enjoy it!

This graphic adaptation of the much loved 2007 fantasy is a bit abbreviated, but the art helps move the story along.
